Real Numbers & word problems
A scuba diver who is 88 ft. below sea level beginsto ascend to the surface.Write an expression to represent the diver's depth below sea level after rising any number of feet.
Relate: 88 ft. below sea level plus feet the diver rises
Define: r = feet the diver rises
Write: 88 + r
Find the new depth of the scuba diver after rising 37 ft.
88 + r 88 + 37 = 51
51 feet below sea level
A matrix is a rectangular arrangement of numbers.
The size of a matrix is identified by the of rows and columns.
2 3 84 1 3
This matrix has two rows and three columns so it is called a 2 x 3 matrix.
Each item in a matrix is called an element.
Matrices is the plural of matrix.
Matrices can be added if they are the same size (the same number of rows and columns).
The answer is a matrix of the same dimension.

Subtracting Real Numbers
Subtracting = Adding the Opposite.
Example:4 (2) 4 + 2 = 6
5 45 + 4 9
Check Understanding 3 p. 33
