Not much if you don't have the Moxie to go with it. But the Liverpool Set do have the Moxie and they also have Moxie Whitney, Royal York Band Leader and artist's agent look- ing after their affairs. Since the tie-in with Whitney The Liverpool set have had success after success which in- cluded starring on the largest outdoor stage in the world, the Canadian National Exhibition. From here the door is open. Coming up are tentative dates for The Sullivan Show and Hollywood Palace. The story of the Liverpool Set goes back, almost a year when their real success story began. It was actually through the per- severance of Bob Martin, National Promo- tion Director of Columbia Records of Cana- da and his right hand man Charlie Camil- leri who insisted on the potential of this new Canadian group. It was just a matter of putting out a demo and getting Colum- bia's Nashville A&R man Frank Jones to give it a listen. Jones was knocked out and the next thing the boys knew they were off to Nashville for their first recording session. The Columbia folks were so ex- cited over the groups talent and enthusiasm that they immediately booked them into the Columbia convention at Miami Florida where they shared the bill with The Byrds and other great US artists. Again we ask what's in a name? The name the boys picked, Liverpool Set caused them much trouble. Local doom beaters, newspapers and just plain jealous competitors rejoiced when it was found that the boys weren't from Liverpool, and set out to try and destroy their image. But the boys took it in their stride and they haven't looked back since. The Liverpool Set is made up of Shane Sennet from Montreal who looks after the bass guitar. Garry Nelson, rhythm, from Timmins, Ontario. Leader Dave Donnell is from London England. Kent Daubney hails from Newark England and Evan Hunt from Wales. Eve Lancing from Latvia gives the group that continental flavouring. Although they don't come from Liver- pool recent reports have it that their Columbia release of "Must I Tell You" has taken off all by itself in this famous music centre. As Canada moves ahead in her attempts to establish the Canadian music industry as a part of the world music industry its groups like The Liverpool Set who will make this identity that much quicker and lasting. So watch for this popular sixome of mopheads to clear the way for other bud- ding young Canadian artists. They are now old hands at television in Canada but have the experience of their young lives coming when they make their appearances on the big "shew" and other TVers from New York and Chicago to Los Angeles. Hot News: It has just been reported from London Ontario that a screaming crowd of over 5000 teeners broke down barricades and mobbed the Liverpool Set as they performed at the London Fair. Four of the group required first aid treatment as did many of the spectators including Bob Martin, National Promotion Director of Columbia Records. After a wild and frenzied battle with the hysterical youngsters, the police managed to get the Liverpool Set into one of the administration buildings and called for reinforcements. The crowd surrounded the building and kept the group prisoner for over two hours.

  • Toronto: The BeachBoys, Sonny and Cher,

v4 J.B. and The Playboys,The Big Town Boys andLittle Caesar and TheConsuls thrilled an esti-mated 9800 representa-tives of a portion of thebuying public who con-tribute greatly to theeconomy of our country, namely the teenager. Asalways, when it comesto teen oriented shows, our local newspapersgave their usual non-

support and in one case attempted to ridi-cule the efforts of one very popular localband and resorted to the lowest of biasedreporting by drawing attention, not to thetalents displayed by this group but rathertheir personal hygiene. The patrons atMaple Leaf Gardens didn't buy it and per-haps they will exercise some reservationwhen it comes to supporting the news mediathat reports on events only to ridicule. There is an old saying "False in onething, false in everything." and todaysteenager is bright enough to comprehendthis slight. Toronto papers in particularhave a tendency to play up to their youngreaders from a "goo goo" position, ordown to their young readers from a "nowlisten here" position.

Possibly if responsible papers wouldtake the time to send someone qualifiedto review young music, perhaps the bald-ing "tired old men" who spend their eve-nings reviewing string quartets . . . mightspend their afternoons looking into themusic of the youth of our nation, whoevenutally might be readers. The responsi-bility is with the editor, and no matter whatlevel of music may be involved, good re-porting and good taste is of the essence.

Syracuse: Carl Schmidt, prexy of Danco/Fonorama sends news that Michel and TheCanadians stopped off in Syracuse for aPA after a successful 8 week engagementin NYC. Reaction in Syracuse was as greatas that from Gotham. Says Carl "Thesekids will put Canada on the map for good."

Montreal: Pierre Lalonde has just re-turned home after a triumphant engagementat the Wildwood's Rainbow Club in AtlanticCity, N.J. He received rave reviews fromthe local dailies. Sonny Schwartz wrote"don't be surprised if Pierre Lalondedoesn't soon become Canada's hottestexport since Mr. Goulet and Seagrams V.0."

Hal Stanley of Ben Kaye Associatesnotes that two of their hottest groups, LesClassels and Les Baronets are now makingCanadian history. Les Baronets with theirVee-Jay outing of "That's The Way LoveHappens" which was given the nod by theUS trades and Les Classels are makinggood local noise with their Trans Canadahit "Please Wait For Me". Watch for thesegroups to make the major US TV networkshows by late Fall.

Regina: Barry Dreger notes that Thenew Loreen Church outing of "Put Down"is gaining in popularity in the Queen City. It's a long way off but apparently Barrycaught C -FUN in Regina and coincidentally

    HERE

    THERE

heard the DJ mention RPM. Also big inRegina is the Big Town Boys' Coke com-mercial.

Loreen Church dropped a note advisingthat she will be off to Winnipeg Sept. 30to tape a show with The Guess Who groupfor the new TV series known as "CanadianTalent Showcase". "Put Down" and "IDon't Want Your Love" were discovered byLoreen on her recent tour with the DickClark Caravan. Starring with Loreen onthis package were Del Shannon The Zom-bies, Shangri-Las and Mel Carter.

Tennessee Ernie Ford headlined this yearsOttawa Exhibition drawing rave reviews. Capi-tol Records hosted a dealer -radio station recep-tion in honour of this great artist. (L to r)Frank Henry, Paul White, Jackie Lapointe, ErnieDick Reindeau, Pete La Pierre and PierreDu bard.

Ottawa: If Ottawans didn't know whoDave Britten was last week they sure donow. The Ottawa Journal went all out tofeature the story of this newest Canadiantalent. His first release "Falling Tears"and "But Then" (Capitol) will establishDave as a national find. With this first re-cord Dave also holds the distinction ofbeing the first Canadian to wax with theSupreme musicians at Tamla-Motown. TheBeach Boys didn't seem to draw muchenthusiasm this trip to By -Town. Perhapsthe wounds haven't healed from their lastvisit. From Sandy Gardiner comes newsthat "Hang On Sloopy" by the McCoys hasbeen released in the UK on the new AndrewOldham label.

One of Upper Canada's fastest rising groups,The Fiends seen being welcomed aboard theCHUM CNE Bandwagon by Bob McAdorey.

Thebig item from RCA isElvis Presley with hisnew EP "Tickle Me"and his latest album

"Elvis For Everyone" Gale Garnett getsset for the charts as review after reviewwelcome her back. It's different but sowas her first hit. "Why Am I Standing AtThe Window" has that quality about itthat could make it a chart -topper. "Skate-board Craze" by Willie and The Wheels isa borrowed sound, but what isn't thesedays, and it's just strong enough to cap-ture the imagination of the sidewalksurfers. The John Gary LPs will no doubtget more sales action in Upper Canadawhen John appears at The Royal YorkHotel in Toronto Nov. 1 to 13. He willalso appear on the Juliette TVer Nov. 6.

Paul White arrived back from his tripto Los Angeles and Disneyland just intime to get the surprise of his life. "ActNaturally" by Ringo Starr is making it bigat the country stations. This could changethe whole concept of the country sound. But really ... country music is basicallyfolk and this type of entertainment startedback a few centuries in ... England. TheBig Town Boys get off to a good start withtheir latest "It was I" being given the"Pick" treatment across the country.Apparently Sonny and Cher were soknocked out with the musical backing theBTBoys gave them during their recentToronto visit that they took back an arm-ful of this new release. "Love's Made AFool Of You" the big smash by TheEsquires is to be released in the US byCapitol. In keeping with the trend of to-day (like, man tomorrows bomb day) GlenCampbell releases "Universal Soldier" areal protest mover. The Yardbirds debutwith their first Capitol LP' "Heart Fullof Soul"

The Quality folks must be very happywith the support they have been gettinglately from CFAC, Calgary. First it was

  • Richard Chamberlain now it Herman'sHermits. CFAC flipped the "Henry TheEighth" single and have come up withwhat could be the next big Canadian hitfor this group called "End Of The World""Everything's Wrong" by Chubby Checkershows good chart action across the coun-try.

Stan Klees Productions announcesthat negotiations have just been completedfor Larry Uttal of Amy -Mal to release "ItWas I" by The Big Town Boys and thefollow-up of Little Caesar and The Con-suls, in the US.

    There's no doubt about

Guy Pastor could not hide his en-thusiasm when he told me about his firstAudio Fidelity release, "Weep" b/wMiracle". Bob Halley produced Guy'ssession for Ulsyra Productions ... Eigh-teen year old, Wendy Muber, took no timeat all to land a recording contract. Sheinformed me that she would be producedfor Mercury by Bob (Halley) and TedCooper of Shapiro -Bernstein ... LouChristie called to tell me about his firstMGM recording session, which was pro-duced by Charlie Calello. All four songsthat were recorded on the date werewritten by Lou. How 'about that?

Tin Pan Alley is talking about TheSupremes upcoming appearance at Lin-coln Center's Philharmonic Hall onOctover 15th. This could mean other"pop record acts" appearing at LincolnCenter in the future ... also Phil Spect-or's ABC special to take place on October22nd.

Waiting to break big on the charts are"Come Back To Me My Love" by RobertGoulet, "Cara-lin" by The Strangelovesand "Say Something Funny To Me" byPatty Duke ... Starting to happen big, after a slow start, is "1, 2, 3" by LenBarry ... The Palace Guard are gettinglots "All Night Long"record ... (They don't aim forsmall goals. They're from The Bigland)

The Beachboys and Sonny andCher performed at Toronto and OttawaSept. 4th and 5th. They were accom-panied by Little Caesar and The Con-suls, J.B. and The Playboys and TheBig Town Boys. Toronto's crowd of10,000 were the most enthusiastic ofthe Canadian tour.

The Mostoway Management firm hasplaced David Clayton Thomas with anew band and is featuring The Shayson their own. The Shays have backedDCT for over two years. Both newbands will issue new record releasessoon.

Fred White of Fred White Promo-tions will accompany Tommy Grahamof The Big Town Boys on a packedschedule tour of the US west coast toset up a booking and record promotioncircuit. This trip is part of Biglandsplanned expansion to the US during1966.

Possibly your teen listen-ers are interested in this club and my disc -jockey readers might mention the addresson the air. The president is Linda Fink, and her address is 4795 Joyce Road, Van-couver 16, B.C. Good luck boys with yournext single.

Watch for . . . a top name top stationdisc jockey to exit for greener pasturesSouth. This could break up the Big Six.Also . . . good luck to J.P. Finnigan whorecently left CKEY in Toronto for pointssouth and west.

Recording studios in Toronto have ex-perienced a great deal of business fromrecord sessions. Only a few months ago,the advertising agencies dominated theirfacilities. Hallmark, RCA Victor, and Arc'snew studios are all working to turn outCanadian hits. Rumour had it that anotherstudio was to expand and make furtherfacilities available, but last reports indi-cate that this has been shelved. Many ofthe artists that chose Nashville as a jump-ing-off point, have stayed behind to cuttheir sides in Canada.

Rumour has it . .. that a New Canadiancontent label is about to spring onto themarket. Initial release has already provenitself to be a SMASH in a remote "testarea". There is talk that . . . three newproducers will appear on the scene soon.Could their initials be TG, WC and JaysonKing. I've already had reports that Jayson'stracks are a Gas!!! Hope Jay isn't takingthis new bag in lieu of singing. He's stillone of the top R&B sounds around.

Improve your English . . . Boondocks isthe slum side of town. "Bag" is what youdo for a living. (like my "bag" is reportingthe news accurately).(Ed: That's a prime example of an in-accuracy . . . if I ever heard one)

As I write . . . speculation is high thatthe Fowler Committee's report will makesweeping changes in Canadian contentprogramming in Canadian radio. The re-ports are from people . . . in the know. Injust a few days . . . we'll all know.

I understand that Canadian groups arebecoming extremely "original material"minded. You'll see more and more Cana-dian singles coming out with Canadiansongs, published in Canada. HURRAH!!!!!!

Our promotion to bring the East and Westcloser together has had great results withstations defending their actions with action. . . and this is Canada . . . Where theaction is . . . Beginning.
