By the time you receive this issue of The Tower, 2014 will be just a couple of days away, and that means you’re almost shopped out, deco-rated out, and partied out: in other words, it’s January: when you have to come to terms with how much you ate, how much you spent, and how much it really irri-tates you that all those deco-rations never seem to fi t back into the box they came out of. Worst of all, you may have to turn the heat on.

January heralds change. The HOA offi ce will have moved to its new home at 18571 Avenida Escorial. The digital sign should be working properly, allowing the removal of those rather unsightly cardboard signs at the intersection. The HOA Board will be gearing up not only for the February elec-tions, but also the announce-ment of the new Couple and Person of the Year.

What we hope will not change is the dues for HOA membership. After much discussion of fi nances, the Board has concluded that if we can increase our mem-bership number to one thou-sand, and barring any unfore-seen major expenses, we can afford to keep 2014 dues at $12.00. The Del Tura HOA yearly membership fee is low by comparison to other com-munities’, and it hasn’t been raised in a number of years. So, you’ll be hearing re-minders at Tuesday Coffees

DEL DEL TURATURA From the President’s Desk

about the benefi ts of HOA membership, and it will be in everyone’s best interest to help recruit new members. No promises, especially for 2015, but for now, we plan to stay at $12.00—another good reason to renew your membership early.

I think you’ll also see some variations in the types of ac-tivities available. As our population’s profi le evolves, bringing in more residents who still work full or part-time, the Board is seeing a defi nite change both in the amount of time people are willing to volunteer and the types of activities they fi nd entertaining. This doesn’t mean we are suddenly going to see fl ash mobs in the Club-house or break-dancing in the streets, but it does mean some old favorites will be joined by new events.

Any HOA member inter-ested in being a candidate for the HOA Board in the

upcoming February election should contact Louise Wil-cox at [email protected] or at (239) 731-8474.

I will close fi rst with a re-minder: please, please be sure HOA has your e-mail and your summer addresses.

And fi nally, I don’t want the year to end without tak-ing the opportunity to per-sonally and publicly express my heartfelt gratitude to the offi cers and members of the HOA Board of Directors. You’ve been the best of the best, and I thank you.

Happy New Year to you all.Donna

DEL DEL TURATURA Send Well Wishes to Friends

in the Local HospitalsBy Sherry Plisch

For your information: You can send your “Well Wishes” to your friends who are in the hospital by going to the website: www.leememorial.org. Click on send a Well Wish to a Patient. Then you may choose from a list of hospitals. But you will need the room number of the person to whom you are send-ing the greeting. (Just call any of the hospitals, day or night and they will give you the room number.) They will print out your message and hand deliver them to the patient. They do this several times a day and it is free. This is such a nice program, especially when you would like to visit, but just can’t get there and you want the patient to know you are thinking of them.

Financial Resolutions for the New Year About 45% of Americans usually make New Year’s resolutions, according to a survey from the University of Scranton. But the same survey shows that only 8% of us actually keep our resolutions. Perhaps this low success rate isn’t such a tragedy when our resolutions involve things like losing a little weight or learning a foreign language. But when we make financial resolutions — resolutions that, if achieved, could sig-nificantly help us in our pursuit of our important long-term goals — it’s clearly worthwhile to make every effort to follow through.

So, what sorts of financial resolutions might you consider? Here are a few possibilities:

Boost your contributions to your retirement plans. Each year, try to put in a little more to your IRA and your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plans. These tax-advantaged accounts are good options for your retirement savings strategy.Reduce your debts. It’s not always easy to reduce your debts, but make it a goal to finish 2014 with a smaller debt load than you had going into the new year. The lower your monthly debt payments, the more money you’ll have to invest for retirement, college for your children (or grandchildren) and other important objectives.Build your emergency fund. Work on building an “emergency fund” containing six to 12 months’ worth of living expenses, with the money held in a liquid account that offers a high degree of preservation of principal. Without such a fund, you might be forced to dip into your long-term investments to pay for emergencies, such as a new furnace, a major car repair, and so on. You might not be able to finish creating your emergency fund in one year, but contribute as much as you can afford.Plan for your protection needs. If you don’t already have the proper amounts of life and disability insurance in place, put it on your “To Do” list for 2014. Also, if you haven’t taken steps to protect yourself from the considerable costs of long-term care, such as an extended nursing home stay, consult with your financial professional, who can suggest the appropriate protection or investment vehicles. You may never need such care, but that’s a chance you may not want to take — and the longer you wait, the more expensive your protection options may be-come.

Don’t overreact to market volatility. Too many people head to the investment “sidelines” during market downturns. But if you’re not invest-ed, then you miss any potential market gains— and the biggest gains are often realized at the early stages of the rally.Focus on the long term. You can probably check your investment balance online, which means you can do it every day, or even several times a day — but should you? If you’re following a strategy that’s appropriate for your needs, goals, risk tolerance and time horizon, you’re already doing what you should be doing in the long run. So there’s no need to stress yourself over the short-term movements that show up in your investment statements.

Do whatever you can to turn these New Year’s resolutions into realities. Your efforts could pay off well beyond 2014.

DEL DEL TURATURA Meet Your Neighbor

Mary MidgettBy Sue Dunigan

“Friendships are wonderful both far and near

New ones and those thru the years, so very dear

Some we seldom see, others we chat with day by day

The reward is the same, hear-ing what friends have to say.” Sue Dunigan 11/3/13

Mary is a friendly person, greeting you with a warm smile. Her kind and intelligent eyes shine brightly as she tells her story and especially when she speaks about her writing projects and love for God and His Word.

Mary and her husband, Henry Midgett were looking for a place to rent for a year or so in March of 2008 and happened to drive by Del Tura Country Club. They liked what they found and moved in a month later. Their friends and neighbors Henry and Val Moreau showed them around and introduced them to many people. She quickly adds, “What we en-joyed so much was our neighbors and how friendly people were to us. We enjoyed the pool; exer-cise room; riding in the parades;

shuffl e board and dancing at the pub and the singing---especially Fran and Dean.”

Her voice is very soft, as she says, “my husband and I shared our strong belief in God. He was a minister and we did a lot of

work together with people with special needs. He was a won-derful husband and friend.” She went on to tell of Henry’s illness and death in January 2011 and expressed how much she appre-ciated all the support and good-ness of neighbors and friends.

Mary sat up very straight in her chair and said with some pride that she was born May 13, 1938, in Massachusetts and her

family moved to Florida when she was ten years old. She re-ceived BS in Education from Barry University in Miami and a MA in Religious Education a few years later. Mary has served in several different career fi elds through the years, including be-ing a Teacher and Principal. She retired in April 2012, after four-teen years as Evaluator and then Supervisor at SW Florida Safety Counsel.

Mary eagerly talks about how in July 2012 she took out her notes from many years of jour-naling and began writing her book: “Pathway Through Life with God” under her pseudonym Elizabeth Lablond. She says, “It reveals my life story and shows how people can handle chal-lenges that we all go through with the help of God.” The book was published earlier this year by XULON PRESS. You can order a copy from 1-855-519-1660 or directly from Mary by calling 239-699-3774. Mary fi nished the interview by fi rmly stating, “I still enjoy living here in Del Tura with the quiet and friendly atmo-sphere!”

DEL DEL TURATURA Good Timers Singles News

By Susan Savitt “A happy person is one who

knows what to remember in the past, what to enjoy in the pres-ent, and what to plan for in the future.”

Arnold H. Glasow This is the time of year that

many of us make resolutions which we later break before we reach the end of January. That doesn’t mean that we should not attempt to make and keep reso-lutions we believe will make us happy. The quote above is good advice on how to go about be-coming, or remaining, a happy person. A balance between the past, the present, and the future seems to be good advice on how to become or remain a happy person. I’m resolving to keep this quote in mind as we begin 2014 and, hopefully, throughout the year.

The Past: I will remember all the wonderful Del Tura and Good Timer friends with whom I have shared some wonderful experiences. Recent memories include the Nite at the Races and the Golf Cart Parade which I chaired with my cousin Deb Winsor, and which events many Good Timers attended: The Broadway Palm Holiday Show, hosted by Louise Dodge - thank you again, Louise.

The Good Timers Holiday

Christmas Dinner at our own Fountain Grille where we cel-ebrated the birthdays of Gloria Ellis, Alice Harris, and Sera-fi na Goncalves, Linda Leeper, Nancy Skorlinski, and Brenda Blasie.

The Christmas Tree Light-ing and show, and the New Year’s Eve Celebration in the beautifully decorated Starlight Ballroom, which was also the setting of so many wonderful shows and dances.

Two former Del Tura resi-dents and Good Timer members recently celebrated birthdays - Helen Stormer celebrated her 90th, and Josephine Rendo, Anna Incorvaia’s mom, cel-ebrated her 107th. We send special birthday wishes to these friends.

We were pleased to wel-come Pat Clemens back at the December meeting. We are still missing Gloria Ellis at our meetings and dinners, and hope she will feel well enough to join is in the new year. Speaking of the December meeting, our vice-president, Joan Whaley, chaired the meeting since Peg McTernan, our president, was out of town. Joan did a won-derful job. Be careful, Joan, you know what happens when you do something well - you get the job! No worries, Joan, you can handle it.

We are very proud to have

a published author as a mem-ber of the Good Timers. Joan J. Johnson resides here in Del Tura and has published a num-ber of non-fi ction books and has written a book of fi ction en-titled “Salamander Crossing,” a thriller. Some of the book clubs in the community have read the book and had Joan as a guest at their meetings. Having read the book, which is available on Amazon, and being present at one of the club meetings, I can report that the book is full of suspense and well-developed characters. Hearing from Joan regarding how she developed the plot, etc., is fascinating. Eat your heart out, John Grisham!

The Future: Some of the events the Good Timers will share include meetings the sec-ond Tuesday of each month at 5:00 p.m. at the Clubhouse; Sweets Party (February 11); the Road Rally (April 10) and the Kentucky Derby (May 3). Mark your calendar and attend the monthly meetings, and/or look on the bulletin board in the lower level of the clubhouse across from the Pub for further details. As always, newcom-ers are welcome. All singles and widowed individuals are encouraged to join. Call Pat Clemens (567-0716), or Lyn Bailey (543-9020) for further membership information.

The Present: I have left the present for last because I believe that it is the most im-portant. When I refl ect on the present, I think of how fortu-nate I am to be sitting here in my home in beautiful Del Tura, at this moment surrounded by family and friends with whom I can share memories with, and plans for future good times.

Wishing you a Happy and Healthy New Year, fi lled with fond memories of the Past, hap-py Present moments, and excit-ing Future endeavors to antici-pate and enjoy.

DEL DEL TURATURA Entertainment News

By Susan Savitt Back in 1785, William Cowp-

er said, “Variety is the very spice of life that gives it all its fl avor.”

Based on the feedback we have received from Del Turians con-cerning types of entertainment preferred, that still appears to be true. Therefore, the entertainment presented this season will consist of a variety of shows and dances, and music, including oldies, jazz, country, and comedy, etc.

Our successful New Year’s Eve Show/Dance featured an in-ternationally famous jazz singer, Katt Hefner.

The next show which will be on Friday, January 17, features both music and comedy. Mary-ellen Hooper is a renowned co-median who has appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The Dennis Miller Show, and the Martin Short Show. She has had her own special on Comedy Cen-tral and has been awarded “Fe-

male Comedian of the Year” at the American Comedy Awards. Glen Johnson will also join us on January 17, and share his musical talents. Glen has opened for per-formers such as The Oak Ridge Boys, Pat Boone, Larry Gatlin, and Ray Price. If Johnny Cash, Conway Twitty, or Elvis songs are among your favorites, you will be treated to Glen’s rendi-tion of some of them at the show. Tickets for this show go on sale Monday, January 6, starting at 7:30 a.m. in the Poinciana Ball-room for HOA members only the fi rst day of sale. Tickets will be sold starting at 7:30 a.m. on both January 7 and January 14, before Tuesday coffee. Ticket sales are open to all on these two dates. This show is HOA sponsored, and there are no refunds.

Please note the new ticket pricing will be in effect for this show. Non-HOA members, the ticket price will be $18.00, while the price per ticket for HOA

members will remain at $16.00.Information regarding other

up-coming shows this season is included on a notice in this issue of the Tower so that you can plan ahead.

Note that the tickets for the Friday, February 14 Valentine Dance starring Del Tura favorite, Brylcream, will go on sale be-fore coffee on Tuesday, January 28 for HOA members only start-ing at 7:30 a.m. in the Starlight Ballroom. Tickets will also be sold to all before Tuesday Coffee starting at 7:30 a.m. on February 4 and 11. Ticket prices for HOA members for this dance are $8.00 for members and $10.00 for non-members. This is a very popular group with Del Turians, and the Valentine’s Dance is a yearly fa-vorite, so plan accordingly. This event is also HOA sponsored, and there are no refunds.

Please join us for the shows and dances to “spice-up” 2014. Happy New Year!!!

DEL DEL TURATURA News From Hometown

By Jim Marlow, Community Manager

First and foremost I would like to thank everyone who at-tended the Del Tura Video and Hometown resident appreciation parties! It was wonderful to see everyone having a great time and man can you folks dance! I would also give a special thank you to your Assistant Commu-nity Manager Julie Rath who or-ganized the events and made sure they came off without a hitch. I would also like to thank Nick and his staff at the pub for their help as we couldn’t have done it without them. As a favor to me, please tell both Julie and Nick thank you for me the next time you see them.

Speaking of talented people, I attended the Tree Lighting Cere-mony and all I can say is WOW! I was expecting just to hear a few holiday words and then the light-

ing. Instead, I was surprised by a holiday pageant! I am impressed daily by the number of talented people we have in Del Tura. Congratulations to all who were part of the show and thank you for giving me a holiday memory I will not soon forget.

I would like to remind every-one that you have until the end of January to get your bar code for your vehicles at the reduced price. We will be making it our standard operating procedure that all residents have a bar code for their cars. This will help us reach our security and safety goals for the front gate. Your support is greatly appreciated.

You may have noticed that the HOA’s new electronic sign is up and operational at the 4 - way stop on Gran Via and Las Palmas. Keep an eye on it when you come into the community for special events and announcements. This is going to be a great tool mov-

ing forward to help keep the residents of Del Tura informed of important information they need to know.

We have had a very successful year with regard to home sales. During 2013 we not only saw an increase in homes sold but we also saw an increase in prices. Come see Betty or Jack at the sales offi ce if you would like to list your home or if you’re think-ing about purchasing another home in the community.

Finally I would be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge the great ef-forts of Jim O’Brien and the dec-orating committee. Del Tura’s entrance is the best looking com-munity entrance on 41! Great job!

I would like to wish each of you a Happy and Healthy New Year and I’m looking forward to an exciting 2014 here at Del Tura!

DEL DEL TURATURA Fruit TreesAn update of our fruit tree project

and an outlook for the future:The question of why our citrus trees

are in trouble is Florida Wide:

Here is the story:The trees are Symptomatic for green-

ing and insect damage. The latter is of no significance. Citrus greening is also known as HLB (Huanglongbing) dis-ease. The disease is caused by a bac-terium vectored by an insect known as the citrus psyllid. There are many ben-eficial insects that feed on psyllids to control their populations.

Virtually all citrus species, hybrids and cultivars are affected by the bacte-rium. Many trees become unproductive when affected. A typically citrus green-ing symptom is blotchy mottle leaves. This is a variegated chlorosis or yel-

lowing of the leaf that is not symmetri-cal on either side of the center of the leaf. The symptoms on the two halves of the leaf are not mirror images of one another.

So far, there is no cure for citrus greening once a tree is infected. You can try to prune, fertilize and water but the trees are not going to survive.

This info is not based on my infa-mous wisdom but copied and edited from one of our local newspapers and is intended for your education and in-formation only.

Let’s hope for a fruitful year for the needy!

Your FISH fruit pickers committee chairs.

Rick Rudzik and Sherry Plish

DEL DEL TURATURA Movember Cancer Support Event

By Bart De Graaf

MOVEMBER is an interna-tional movement with its roots in Australia some 15 years ago.

Del Tura residents were once more generous to a fault. The MOVEMBER fund raiser for men’s health awareness raised $1,340 during the weekly Cof-fee Hours in November. They were also collected on line.

Fifty seven percent of all men over age 50 with be diag-nosed with prostate cancer.

The donations will be used

for research in detection, pre-vention and cures for prostate and testicular cancers and for other men’s health concerns.

Our Del Tura fund raising activities included providing temporary “stick on” mus-taches for anyone who wanted be included but could not grow a “stache”. This included the women who also wanted to of-fer their support.

During the last Tuesday Cof-fee of November, the group

came forward and posed for the pictures. Please note EVERY-ONE is sporting a “stache”. The pictures were sent to the NBC TODAY Show with hope that they would share it dur-ing their No Shave November promotion in support of MO-VEMBER.

We estimate that more than 150 Del Turians participated in the campaign, once again proving ,(to quote the Direc-

tor of the Florida Rep.) that Del Tura residents are the most concerned, most generous, best looking and smartest people in all of South West Florida.

From the organizers, “Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!”

DEL DEL TURATURA ATTENTION

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH & SAFETY PATROL MEMBERS

As of July 2013, the Del Tura Safety Patrol Pro-gram was discontinued. Please remove your Safety Patrol sign from your golf carts. They are no longer needed.

I would like to thank all of you who participated in our Safety Patrol Program. I would not have been able to do it without your help. I want to especially thank Linda Storma who started the Neighborhood Watch and Safety Patrol program over six years ago, also

Eddy Highfi ll who took over for two years while I served on the Board of Directors. I then took it over after Eddy became ill. With the help of Linda Storma taking care of my computerized member ros-ters, my job was made eas-ier. Thank you for helping to keep Del Tura a safe place for us to live in.

There is still a Neighbor-hood Watch Program. It’s just a matter of all of us looking out for each other homes and neighbors.

If you see something that is not quite what it should be, call Sheriff’s Offi ce at 477-1000. If it is a matter of life or death, call 911.

Again, it has been an honor and a privilege to have served as your Neigh-borhood Watch and Safety Patrol chairperson. Thank you all.

Henry Moreau

DEL DEL TURATURA Del Tura Walkers Honored

for the Fourth YearBy Linda Schoonmaker

The American Cancer Society held the Mak-ing Strides Against Breast Cancer Wrap-Up Party on November 18, 2013. Our Del Tura Walkers were honored with awards for our participation in the 2013 Walk.

November 19, 2013 was a day of celebration for our community as we en-joyed sharing our Del Tura Walkers’ history with ev-eryone at coffee hour.

Louise Dodge held up our framed Top Team cer-tifi cate for 2010. Anna

Wilson held up our framed Top Team certifi cate for 2011. Valentina Moreau held up our framed 2012 Top Team certifi cate. Sue Symes held up our brand new Top Team certifi cate for 2013, which will be framed very shortly. Our Del Tura Walkers have not only made history with the American Cancer Society but in Lee County as well.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer has been a pretty big part of our com-munity for the past eight years and hopefully will continue to be in the fu-ture. Our very own Sue

Symes was awarded the Top Fundraisers award for 2013. Sue also received a lovely gift from the Ameri-can Cancer Society.

I have had the privilege of being our team captain since we started our team and I would like to tell ev-eryone that I could not be prouder of this communi-ty and this team. Our Del Tura Walkers have made a differance and we will con-tinue to make a differance for the multitude of people who are still in need of help in this on-going fi ght.

Way to go Del Tura!

DEL DEL TURATURA Del Tura Bingo

By Erv Storma

Our Bingo season has been going well. The jackpots have been over $100 in payouts for each of the four special games. Our regular games are paying out $25.00 now, how-ever, as attendance rises that will go higher.

The food donations have been great! Keep it up! You can get an extra bonus game card when you bring in a non-perishable food item. Bring in two items or more and you can get two bonus cards. This is a great help for the Senior Hunger Initiative. Thank you.

Game packs are $5.00 and Spe-cials are $4.00 for all four games with those higher payouts. We also

have “Hot Balls” now...up to three! It’s great fun and the jackpot rolls over if no one wins... so even more can be won.

Come join us on Thursday nights in the Starlight ballroom. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. with sales ending at 6:45 p.m. The games start at 7:00 p.m. Coffee and cookies are avail-able or bring your own drinks and snacks if you wish.

Now all we need is you! Enjoy Del Tura Bingo and B.Y.O.D (Dauber)

P.S. If you don’t have your own dauber...we sell them for $1.00!

SPORTS PAGEDEL DEL

TURATURA Friday Shuffleboard LeagueBy Jack Blevons

By the time you read this, the holidays are over for another year and we are into 2014. Janet and I both hope that everyone had a wonderful Christmas and will have a good New Year. We hope that a lot of you got to see and enjoy our decorations that we had up in our yard again. Now we can spend a week taking them all down and storing them in our garage for an-other year. A lot of work but know-ing it was enjoyed by so many, that makes all the work worth it. We do it for all of you.

Anyhow, after today’s play, December 6, the standings are as follows: The A-fl ight leaders are Jack/Janet Blevons in 1st place at 12/3 followed by Bob Crawford/Ben Hargraves and Fred and Car-

olyn Brueggemann tied for 2nd place at 11/4. The B-fl ight lead-ers are Dave and Nancy Denny in 1st place at 11/4, followed by Chuck and Marcella Carothers in 2nd place at 10/5, and the teams of Lynne Sabel/Barb Jones and Joe Vigilante/John Eck are tied for 3rd place at 8/7.

I would like to welcome some new players into our league this year. Leon and Mary Lou Buss are a new team this year that were subs last year. John Eck, who is playing with Joe Vigilante, and his wife Marlene Eck, who is playing as a sub. We are also glad to have Jo Ann Liddle back again and she is partnered with Bob Lawson who also is new this year. Dave Denny, who also was a sub, is now partnered with his wife Nancy as a new team and

Judy Lessard, who also subbed last year now plays regular on a team with Gail Hargraves. Last but not least, Cindy Forrest who was a sub last year and now is partnered with Mary Pimental. Welcome aboard to all. I don’t think I missed any.

Now that we are into January we have a lot of renters back and also it’s the season for visitors and family so I would just want to remind everyone who comes to play on the courts to PLEASE respect the rules by NOT walk-ing on the courts and also to treat the equipment that you use to play as though it were your own. Equipment gets expensive to re-place and Hometown has been great in maintaining our courts and providing us with parts to repair the pushers when they get broken and also provides us with chalk for our scoreboards. Janet and I will try to repair broken pushers and keep chalk avail-able as needed. As the renters arrive you will notice that Home-town replaced our worn benches which were getting in bad shape, with all new benches. We are very appreciative of that so lets keep them looking as nice as they look now. In closing, please be sure all the lights are off and the shack door and window are both closed when you are done play-ing. Thanks for your cooperation.

DEL DEL TURATURA Del Tura Men’s

Golf AssociationBy Jay Flanagan

The January activities that are to be sponsored by the Men’s Golf Association include a Part-ner Match Play tourney that will take place on four consecutive Wednesdays starting on Janu-ary 8, and continuing on January 15, 22 and 29. The event will be fl ighted and teams will move on with a win. The Nine-Holers will also compete in the same format.

The second activity to be scheduled is the annual Ryder Cup. Although the format will be changed, teams that have been drafted will compete in best ball, alternate shot and singles play on January 31, February 1 and Feb-ruary 2.

The 2013 President’s Cup competition, that was completed after last month’s Tower print deadline, and the fi nal results include Randy Gottsacker over Dan Haag in the 1st Flight; Don Mick besting Desi Pedersen in Flight 2; Don Vadeboncoeur de-feating Barry Wade in Flight 3; Flight 4 champ was Terry Kinzel over Roger Stavely and Chuck Reese getting by Larry Brown in 20 holes for the fl ight 5 champi-onship.

The Annual MGA Awards Dinner was held on December 6 and the following were rec-ognized for their achievements: the fore mentioned President’s Cup champs received plaques and shirts for their accomplish-ments. Member-Member 1st Flight champions were Jack Berling and Rich Cordeiro and John Brennan and Steve Marra cornered the awards for Flight 2. The Jack and Jill champions were Judy Greenstreet and Larry Brown. The award winners in the Club Championships were Robert Smith (5 Flight), Bob Ga-rabedian (Flight 4), Tom Ziegler (3rd Flight), Dan Haag in Flight 2 and receiving the green jacket emblematic of the overall Club Champion was Jerry Beiermann. Tom Leydon was crowned the Gold Flight Club Champion and the President’s Cup winner.

The Men’s Golf Association also announced the new elected offi cers for 2014 season. Those named were Jay Flanagan as the new President and Roger Stavely the new Vice President. Randy Gottsacker the seated Treasurer and Bill Weddleton the incum-bent Secretary were reelected to their positions.

The Del Tura softball team is readying themselves for compe-tition in their new league, The Mark and Mary Ford League, based in Punta Gorda. Though the league and playing site is new, there will be a familiarity with the teams. The league is composed of eight teams from seven North Fort Myers’ com-munities.

The new fi elds are located at Charlotte County’s Carmelita Sport’s Park off Florida Road in Punta Gorda. All of the games will be played at 5:30 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays starting January 6 through March 26, 2014.

For those fans looking to fol-low the Amigos, there are a num-ber of ways to get to the fi elds that are located just north of Edison State College on the west side of I-75.

The easiest way to fi nd the complex is to go north on 41 to Taylor Road (there is an Edison State College sign before the road) on which you turn right. Follow Taylor all the way to Air-port Road (2nd stop light) where you take a right. Then follow Airport, take a left on Florida just before the overpass over I-75. The complex is off Florida on the left, approximately one mile north.

DEL DEL TURATURA 18-Hole Women’s Golf Association

By Carol Marra

In early December we were the warmest place in the Unit-ed States while our friends in Michigan, New York and New England had highs in the 20’s. Anyone who watched Pittsburg play Miami wondered how the players could even see the lines. So, when friends ask you if you miss the “white stuff” around your Christmas tree to get that real feel of the season, just smile!

December is also the month of our Awards Banquet with the Women’s and Men’s 9 and 18-Hole Golf Associations gathering for dinner and to cele-brate. In the prayer before dinner Barry Wade thanked the many losers for, without losers, there can be no winners. Winners, you are welcome!!

This year our President’s Cup was played over 3 days in March. The following ladies won:A: 1st: Kay Rolader

2nd: Ruth Ann Blevins.B: 1st: Moa Shearer

2nd: Bonnie EvangelistC: 1st: Carm Tyler

2nd: Carrie LeclercD: 1st: Joan Gervase

2nd: Micki SullivanOn November 14, 20 and 21

the Club Championship took place. The winners for 2013 are:Flight 1: 1st: Paula LaFreniere

2nd: Brenda Sharp3rd: Debbi Overholser

Flight 2: 1st: Kay Rolader 2nd: Louise Bowers 3rd: Lynne Miller

Flight 3: 1st: Bonnie Evangelist 2nd: Linda Beiermann 3rd: Joan Whaley

Flight 4: 1st: Connie Ashcroft 2nd: Elaine Deraney 3rd: Pat Bedard

A special congratulations to Paula, who won the Club Cham-pionshp for the 4th time. We held the Member-Member for the 2013 golf season on December 11 and 12. Our Christmas lun-cheon was December 19. Birdie Pins and Low Gross and Low Net awards were given out as well as a trophy for Most Improved Golfer in 2013. This year’s Most Improved Golfer winner was Joyce Alaqa.

New Offi cers were elected on December 5 for 2014. They are:

President: Lynne MillerVice-President: Jan PedersenSecretary: Carol MarraTreasurer: Michelle Reese

December also included an A/B/C/D Welcome Back Scram-ble on December 14 and Glow Ball on December 28. And, of course, the annual Bloody Mary Scramble is on January 1, 2014.

Ryan continues to give clinics. They are usually on Wednesday. Check in the Pro Shop for time and lesson topic.

It will be interesting to see what the New Year brings. I don’t think it will be sleet or wind chills at minus 20! It could be the story of the one that almost went in for that elusive hole-in-one, the bad luck of the tree that got in the way and, of course, the putt that lipped out. (Just ask Tiger!!) But, mostly, may the New Year bring you joy and happiness and good times with friends on and off the Golf Course.

DEL DEL TURATURA Nine-Hole

Women’s GolfBy Rita Immoor

Wow! What a busy, busy month! November 7 was a scramble with a two-team tie. On November 14, it was drop your worst score . Flight 1 had a tie between Molly Brown and Mary Ann Wuerdeman, Flight 2 Mary Kay Tointon and Flight 3 Trudy Olds. On November 18, the couples’ challenge resulted in a tie between Mary Ann and Dick Wuerdeman and Molly Brown and Gary Perkins. The challenge was followed by our cocktail party with hor’dourves at Pat Al-ley’s and a delicious dinner in the Starlight Ballroom -- as a result of which was we all went home bigger than we started! On No-vember 21, the game was low net on the North and A fl ight winner was Molly Brown, B fl ight win-ner was Carol Durfer and C fl ight

winner was Nancy Skorlinski. November 28 was Thanksgiv-ing and we all spent it in our own special way but not in club golf. On December 5, our A team win-ner was Joan Leydon, B fl ight Justine Fitzgibbons and C fl ight Louisa Vaillancourt. December 6 was the Annual Awards Ban-quet, which was well attended and many prizes were awarded to the various winners in our club.

In addition to regular an-nouncements at the weekly tournament play, members are reminded to regularly review published announcements on our Bulletin Board to obtain specif-ics for all planned events. New members are always welcome to join the Nine-Hole Women’s Golf Association at any time dur-ing the year. Don’t hesitate to contact Marlene DeGraaf at 599-4404 for more information.

DEL DEL TURATURA FISH - Friends in Service Here

By Dianne Conlon, President

As I refl ect on our past 12 months of volunteering for FISH, I fi nd that there are many of our FISH volunteers giving much of their time to make life better for all of us here in Del Tura.

FISH services are for both homeowners and renters. We are looking forward to see-ing our residents who are back. As we resume our ac-tivity for the season let’s not forget our neighbors who are in need in our community. Those in need often will not come to FISH for help. So if you know or hear of someone in need of our service please contact the FISH phone line

997-3474 and leave your name, phone number and what your needs are so we can be of help.

We have provided over 373 pieces of medical equip-ment and put in over 186 hours of service thanks to Richard Symes, Neil Miller and Richard Rudzik. Many Meals were delivered to residents just home from the hospital. Head of the Meals Committee is Sherri Plisch and Joann Nitka and their fi ve helpers, Ben Duff, Ellie Haug, Chris Raynor, Bonnie Sharpless and Joan Whaley. Ruth Anten is in charge of cards to residents wishing them well. Ruth sent out over 262 cards this year. Sue

Symes and her committee delivered over 50 gift bas-kets at Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas to anyone in need of some cheer. We also have a group of twelve vol-unteers, headed by Charlene Osborn who has a pleasant job of calling you on your birthday, and we can’t forget Rich Keen who updates the FISH Bulletin Board which is located at the Clubhouse downstairs hallway near the exit to the pool. Stop by sometime and check it out.

Did you know there is a great group of FISH volun-teers that have been gather-ing unwanted fruit from resi-

Our Transportation Com-mittee headed by Chris Raynor gets many thanks to her and her Bookies (people who call the volunteer driv-ers.) If you want to see what Bookies look like see sepa-rate article in The Tower un-der Bookies Luncheon. We want to thank all the drivers who provided over 177 rides this past year. They are be-hind the scenes volunteers and they are the best. Thanks

to Ruth Donges heading up and making all arrangements for the Flu Clinic and her helpers. Thanks to our Ad-ministrator Betty Scheetz, whose job is to keep all the hours and all the paper work organized. She’s a genius and much appreciated.

FISH wants to thank all the volunteers who help make Del Tura a better place to live,

I apologize if I have missed anyone. All our vol-unteers are appreciated. This will be my last year on the FISH Board. I want to say thank you to the Board Com-mittees and the Volunteers, all one hundred eight of you, for making FISH what it is today. I want to give a spe-cial thanks to Marge Lord

for her ten years of service. She helped me immensely and was always there with a smile and kind word. This is also Marge Lord’s last year on the Board. Job well done and thanks.

Much appreciation to ev-eryone who donated funds for the Medical Trailer and to those who gave of their ser-vices free to repair the trailer. The money came in waves and every time we received more funds we fi xed some-thing else. We even received free paint. FISH will have an open House on February 11 after Coffee for two hours. Come and see and hear what got accomplished.

Respectfully,FISH President, Dianne Conlon

By Mary White

HAPPY, HEALTHY NEW YEAR.

January is fi nally here and so is our 2014 Health and Wellness Expo on January 22, 2014. Doors open at 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Please come out and enjoy over 35 partici-pants. Don’t forget the Medi Waggin for your four legged family member. We will be offering valuable informa-tion on a number of health issues. The Bloodmobile will be here again this year. There is always a need of blood do-nations here in Lee County. Have your eyes and hearing checked. How about a relax-ing neck message? There will be something for everyone. MARK YOUR CALEN-DARS!

January’s after Coffee speakers are:

1/14 Cathy Brady RN - Clinical Manager - Life-line and Telehealth Program Manager will be demonstrat-ing and speaking about the use of Telehealth (Remote Patient Monitoring) and Per-sonal Emergency Response Systems as tools used to avoid unnecessary ER visits or hos-pitalizations. The goal of the Telehealth Program is to teach patients how to care for them-selves and maintain their inde-pendence as long as possible.

1/21 Trish Bissler - Crime Prevention Specialist from the Lee County Sheriffs Dept. will offer a 1 1/2 to 2 hour - Seniors Driving Safely semi-nar, 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. This program is sponsored and supported by the Florida

I would like to set up a CPR/AED certifi cation, re-certi-fi cation class. I will have a signup sheet available at Cof-fee on January 7, 2014. There have been changes making CPR much easier. EVERY-ONE should know basic CPR and yes, it can and does save lives.
