    III. READING COMPREHENSION (25p)

A esop was a Greek story teller. He probably lived in Phrygia - now part of Turkey - in the sixthcentury before Christ. Aesops fables are very popular worldwide. Most of the characters in hisfables are animals. Each fable has a moral.

Now read the following fable:The Lion and the Mouse

O nce , when a Lion was sleeping, a little Mouse began running up anddown upon him. Soon the Lion woke up, placed his huge paw upon theMouse and opened his big jaws to swallow him. Pardon, pardon me!

Forgive me this time! I will never forget it, I promise! Who knows, but Ihope I will have the chance to help you back one of these days!, cried thelittle Mouse.

The Lion found this promise quite funny. Smiling at his little prisoner, helifted up his paw and generously let him go.

Some time after, some hunters caught the Lion in a trap. They desired to carryhim alive to the King. So, they tied the Lion to a tree while they went in search ofa waggon to carry him on.

Just then the little Mouse happened to pass by, and seeing the sad situation inwhich the Lion was, went up to him and soon began chewing up the ropes thatbound the noble beast. In a short time he freed the Lion. Was I not right?, saidthe little Mouse.
