Who are we, that You would be mindful of us?What do You see, that's worth looking our way?We are free, in ways that we never should be.Sweet release, from the grip of these chains.Like hinges straining from the weight, my heart no longer can keep from singing.

Page 3: 13.1.27 listening and asking

All that is within me cries. For You alone be glorified Emmanuel, God with us.My heart sings a brand new song. The debt is paid these chains are gone.Emmanuel, God with us.

Page 4: 13.1.27 listening and asking

Lord You know, our hearts don't deserve Your glory.Still You show, a love we cannot afford.Like hinges straining from the weight, my heart no longer can keep from singing.

All that is within me cries. For You alone be glorified Emmanuel, God with us.My heart sings a brand new song. The debt is paid these chains are gone.Emmanuel, God with us.

Such a tiny offering, compared to Calvary, nevertheless we lay it at your feet.Such a tiny offering, compared to Calvary, nevertheless we lay this at your feet.

All that is within me cries. For You alone be glorified Emmanuel, God with us.My heart sings a brand new song.My debt is paid these chains are gone.Emmanuel, God with us. (opening prayer)

Listening and Doing

19 My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry.

Page 9: 13.1.27 listening and asking

Oh what I would do to haveThe kind of faith it takes to climb out of this boat I'm inOnto the crashing waves

To step out of my comfort zoneTo the realm of the unknown where Jesus isAnd He's holding out his hand

Page 10: 13.1.27 listening and asking

But the waves are calling out my name and they laugh at meReminding me of all the times I've tried before and failedThe waves they keep on telling meTime and time again. 'Boy, you'll never win!'"You'll never win"

But the voice of truth tells me a different storyAnd the voice of truth says "Do not be afraid!"And the voice of truth says "This is for My glory"Out of all the voices calling out to meI will choose to listen and believe the voice of truth

Page 11: 13.1.27 listening and asking

Oh what I would do to haveThe kind of strength it takes to stand before a giantWith just a Sling and a stoneSurrounded by the sound of a thousand warriorsShaking in their armorWishing they'd have had the strength to stand

Page 12: 13.1.27 listening and asking

But the giant's calling out my name and he laughs at meReminding me of all the times I've tried before and failedThe giant keeps on telling meTime and time again "boy, you'll never win!"You'll never win"

Page 13: 13.1.27 listening and asking

But the stone was just the right sizeTo put the giant on the groundAnd the waves they don't seem so highFrom on top of them looking downI will soar with the wings of eaglesWhen I stop and listen to the sound of JesusSinging over me

I will choose to listen and believe the voice of truth.

18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.

The Boy Jesus at the Temple

41 Every year Jesus’ parents went to Jerusalem for the Festival of the Passover. 42 When he was twelve years old, they went up to the festival, according to the custom. 43 After the festival was over, while his parents were returning home, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but they were unaware of it.

Page 16: 13.1.27 listening and asking

44 Thinking he was in their company, they traveled on for a day. Then they began looking for him among their relatives and friends. 45 When they did not find him, they went back to Jerusalem to look for him.

Page 17: 13.1.27 listening and asking

46 After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions.

47 Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers. 48 When his parents saw him, they were astonished. His mother said to him, “Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you.”

Page 18: 13.1.27 listening and asking

49 “Why were you searching for me?” he asked. “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?” 50 But they did not understand what he was saying to them.

51 Then he went down to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. But his mother treasured all these things in her heart. 52 And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.

Began in the 12th century by a French monk called Guigo.

“Divine reading"

Gradually let go of our own agenda and open ourselves to what God wants to say to us.

There are various ways of practicing Lectio Divina.

Page 25: 13.1.27 listening and asking

First stage: Lectio (Reading)

read the Word of God, slowly and reflectively so that it sinks into us.

The second stage is meditatio (reflection) where we think about the text we have chosen and ruminate upon it so that we take from it what God wants to give us.

The third stage is oratio (response) where we leave our thinking aside and simply let our hearts speak to God. This response is inspired by our reflection on the Word of God.

Page 26: 13.1.27 listening and asking

The final stage of is contemplatio (rest) We simply rest in the Word of God. We listen at the deepest level of our being to God who speaks within us with a still small voice.

These stages are not fixed rules of procedures, but guidelines.

Less talking, more listening.

Page 27: 13.1.27 listening and asking

At the end of the Lectio Divina, we are going to take a moment to write questions.

Questions about anything—God, people, life…

Write a question you’d like the group to discuss on an index card and place it in the vase.

We will discuss them next week. .
