SCIENTIFIC INVESTIGATION• A scientific investigation : a series of steps
done systematically to study a problem or an event.
• Involves the use of one or more science process skills.– Different types of skills, including thinking &
reasoning skills need for scientific investigation.– Examples : Observing, measuring, making
inferences & controlling variables

The sequence of steps in scientific investigation
Identifying the problemWe determine what we want to find out.
Forming a hypothesisTo make a smart guess to explain the problem.
Needs to be tested.
Planning an experimentIdentifying the variables involved.
Determining the materials & apparatusDetermining the procedure to carry out, methods
of collecting & analysing data
![Page 7: 1.3 Steps in Scientific Investigation](https://reader033.fdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022061116/5465cd9fb4af9fcc138b46b2/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Carrying out the experimentControlling the variables
Collecting data through observations & measurements.
Analysing & interpreting dataExplaining the collected data
Giving an explanation.
Making a conclusionState whether the hypothesis is true.
Based on data.
Writing a report on the experimentWriting a report on the experimentPresent the aim, apparatus & procedure, any table/graph
& conclusion in the report.
