Medicine and Yoga Centre in

Ashgabat.

He also unveiled a bust of

Mahatma Gandhi. Speaking

at the occasion, after witness-

ing a Yoga demonstration, the

Prime Minister said that this

was an occasion of immense

happiness for him - where

children greeted him in Hindi,

a bhajan was sung as the

bust of the Mahatma was

unveiled, and some Yoga

asanas were demonstrated

so accurately.

The Prime Minister referred to

Berdimuhamedov earlier, and

said that the President had

said this was a small begin-

ning towards his vision of a

world class Yoga Centre,

which would demonstrate the

effects of Yoga to people.

Referring to Mahatma Gandhi,

the Prime Minister said the

solutions to two big problems

facing mankind today - terror-

ism and climate change -

could be found in the life and

thought of Mahatma Gandhi.

The Prime Minister hoped

that the Yoga Centre and the

The Themes for the Symposium includeAntarctica and Supercontinent Evolution,Antarctic Surface Processes,Landscapes, and Links with Cryosphereand Climate, Antarctic Solid EarthStructure and Interactions with theCryosphere: Antarctica, the SouthernOcean, and Evolution of Climate and theGlobal Cryosphere, amongst others. The International symposium on AntarcticEarth Sciences (ISAES) is a SCAR-initia-tive aimed at showcasing Antarctic geo-science research, taking stock of theaccomplishments of the International fra-ternity and providing guidance for futurestudies. Shri Gadkari will be present at thefinal blast ceremony when the National HighwayAuthority of India (NHAI) engineers will drill a holethrough the final section of the tunnel between Chenaniand Nashri. The state-of-the-art tunnel is simultaneously being builtfrom the two ends and the NHAI teams will meet at thecentre by drilling a hole through the final section. The9.2 km tunnel, which is part of the ambitious 286 km-long four-laning of the Jammu-Srinagar national high-way, will reduce the distance between two cities —Jammu and Srinagar — by around 30 km. The road islikely to be opened to traffic in July next year. Work onthe tunnel was started on May 23, 2011. The tunnel,connecting Chenani in Udhampur with Nashri inRamban district, is being completed at a cost of over Rs2500 crore. It will also reduce the existing road distancebetween two points on the highway from 41 km to 10.89km. The NHAI is also constructing a parallel escape tunnelalong with the main tunnel for evacuation of commutersin case of eventuality.

they began to dance.Today with the western danceforms getting popular, maledancers are getting out of theirshell and stepping into their danc-ing shoes. But do they still facecriticism and emotional lecturesfrom families before steppingonto the dance floor of a class.With my experience of teachingdancing to thousands of studentsin India, I would say ‘Yes.’Even today when a boy walksonto the dance floor first questionhe asks is ‘Will I be able todance’, ‘Is it very difficult’, ‘I amhere because my ladylove wantsme to dance.’ These questionsmake me feel that we men doubtour learning capabilities. But justthe effort that he has taken tocome to a class makes me feelthat there is HOPE.Many men feel that it’s theupbringing that makes them thinkthis way. From a very young agethey are made to stay away fromdance and dancing stuff.

Their parents tell then to go outand play various games andsports without being aware thatsome form of western dances likeLatin and Ballroom are a part ofOlympic Games. Thus,although both Buddhism,and, to a greater extent,Jainism contributed to thegrowth of ahimsa doctrine,neither seems to have devel-oped the sacred cow conceptindependently. The AtharvaVeda bans only the eating ofthe raw flesh and the humanflesh. The Yajurveda men-tions Ashvamedha or thehorse sacrifice, and evenPurushamedha or the humansacrifice (Yajurveda (VS30–31)). The Purushamedhaor human sacrifice was purelyritualistic, and there is noproof of a human ever beingsacrificed.Eating any meat is a subjectof personal preference whichcomes under theFundamental right affordedby the Constitution of India.As per the Constitution, whenit was written post India’sIndependence, the beefslaughter was written into theconstitution as a state sub-ject; that is, every state canexercise its right to ban orallow cow slaughter. I mustremind you that this ban or noban of cow slaughter is onlyfor trade. Even in a bannedstate, one can kill a cow andeat its meat and share it withothers without trading it formonetary gain. This is part ofevery citizen-of-India’sFundamental Right guaran-teed by the constitution,which cannot by banned byany legislative body like theparliament or assembly.

ISAES symposium at Goa represents truly an inter-national effort with participation from nearly 40countries of around 400 scientists nearly equallydivided between the overseas and the Indian partic-ipants. The deliberations through over thirty ses-sions in five days are expected to lead to consolida-tion of the status of scientific studies and provideguidance for future research. Of particular interest isthe nature of sub-ice rocks as 98% of Antarctica iscovered by ice with an average thickness of ~2000mand large areas of continent are not accessible todirect observation. This information is crucial to pre-dict the behaviour of melting of ice which in theeventuality of complete melting is estimated to leadto the global sea level rise of ~60m. It is only oneexample of the significance of studies on Antarcticscience. Both the atmosphere over Antarctica aswell as the ocean surrounding this southern conti-nent has strong influences on global weather pat-terns and ocean currents which directly affect themankind. has changed its level of advice to Tunisia and

now advises against all but essential travel to

the country.

The decision comes as a result of the ongoing

investigation into the events that took place in

Tunisia, with a further attack believed to be

“highly likely”.

ABTA estimates there are around 3,000 cus-

tomers currently on holiday with its members

in Tunisia, but there will also be a number of

holidaymakers who have travelled independ-

ently.

Most travel companies have been allowing

customers with holidays booked to Tunisia to

cancel or amend their booking following the

incident last month so the numbers are signif-

icantly down for

year; although

some have cho-

sen to continue

Even as the government grappled with issues including defin-

ing what constitutes wholesale and retail trade in the context of

permitting foreign investment in business-to-consumer (B2C)

e-tailing, e-commerce companies in a meeting with the indus-

try department demanded greater ease of doing business and

urged the Centre to bring out more clarity on tax issues ham-

pering their business.

Meanwhile, in the stakeholders meeting convened by industry

secretary Amitabh Kant, the Confederation of All India Traders

(CAIT) said e-commerce has become a tool for converting

India into a dumping ground, adding that dumping of cheap

goods — even below the actual price of the manufacturer —

happens when prices are artificially lowered by accessing

funds from overseas sources. “E-tailers are openly circum-

venting the norms and indulging in B2C model which is creat-

ing an uneven level playing,” CAIT said in a statement.

Among those who attended the meeting included representa-

tives from CAIT, Retailers Association of India, CII, FICCI,

eBay, Flipkart, Amazon, US-India Business Council, Walmart,

Homeshop18, Pahle India Foundation, Ikea, H&M, and the
