− Minimum total capacity for the main fire pumps ;
QF = 4/3 × QBP, QBP - bilge pump capacity
− Capacity of each fire pump ;
N - Number of required fire pumps.− Capacity of emergency fire pump ;
QEFP ≥ 4/3 × QBP × 0.4QEFP ≥ 25 m³/h
For cargo ships QF need not exceed 180 m³/h, but in no case less than 25m³/h.

2. Opening the master valve for the space.
− Two separate controls should be provided.
 CO2 HP fire extinguishing sys. for machinery spaces.
− The fixed piping system shall be such that 85% of the required CO2 can be discharged into the E/R within 2 minutes.
− Required quantity of CO2 : the larger of the following:
1. 35% of the gross volume of the engine room including the casing.
2. 40% of the gross volume of the engine room, excluding:
The casing above the level at which the horizontal area of the casing is 40% or less or the horizontal area of the E/R taken midway between the tank top and the lowest part of the casing.

 High expansion foam systems:
 Only hot foam systems, using inside air to generate form, is used for machinery spaces today.
 The system must have been successfully tested according to IMO MSC/Circ. 668, Part B.
 Design requirements such as:
- Foam in-mix concentration & foam type
- Filling rate
- Foam generator capacity/design/arrangement
To be according to test documentation/certificate.The foam generator and foam concentrate must be of approved (i.e. certified) type.

Fire Fighting System - E/R
− The generators should be evenly distributed.
Where the engine room is divided into separate spaces (e.g. workshop, purifier room, ECR, etc.) each space must be provided with foam generator(s).
 High expansion foam systems:
− The Arrangement in the engine room is to be such that possible overpressure generated by the fire and application of foam can be relieved.
E.g. by keeping exhaust ventilation louvres in the casing open during foam application.
− The quantity of foam concentrate available shall be sufficient to produce a volume of foam equal to five times the volume of the space protected.

Fire Fighting System - E/R
− The expansion ratio of the foam shall not exceed 1,000 to 1.
 High expansion foam systems:
− The capacity of the system is to be sufficient to fill the whole space to the level of the main deck in course of maximum 10 minutes.
− The emergency fire pump capacity :
Supply foam generators with sufficient water for maximum production
+Water for 2 hydrants(min.25m3/h)
For the type approved hot foam systems the expansion ratio is 620-660 : 1.
Easier flow-out/distribution.
