NOTHING TILLS LIKE A TIGER.The leading factor in crop-yield r eduction is soil compactionbut most points do little to alleviate it.Case IH Tiger Pointsdesigned by the engineers behind the number one disk ripper on the marketaredifferent. The 23-degree, downward- rearward- and outward-swept wingsengineered in 1985 after yearsof in-depth agronomic researchdo more than just cut a slot in the compaction layer; in both wet anddry conditions, they create a turbulent lifting and twisting action below the soil surface that aggressivelyfractures compaction for maximum air and water penetration and minimal runoff. Building is more fun thanbuying for Meyer and Zink
By CArol MoorMANSaff wi

him on a four wheeler. PHOTOS BY CAROL MOORMAN
Meire Grove ChrisMeyer and Zach Zinkdont need blueprints tobuild things. Its all intheir headsor by trial
and error.Tat is evident withthe go-cart Chris andZach, both Melrose HighSchool seniors, builtrom scratch, using itemsthey ound in the ruralMeire Grove arm woodso Chris parents, Karland Geri, in their atticand in junkyards.
Its not expensive, but its time consuming,Chris said one eveningas the two talked abouttheir go-cart, parked inthe Meyers armyardwhere the building was
done.It doesnt surprise
Chris parents that hes abuilder or Zachs parents,om and Mary, that he
helped.Growing up, Chriswas always putzingaround with something, said Geri, with Karl nod-ding his head yes.
Te project start-ed the summer o 2012,when Chris decided hewanted to build anothergo-cart. He had experi-ence to build on. Aboutve years earlier, he andhis dad built their rstgo-cart, a smaller versiono their current go-cart.Tat one was strippeddown to start the second

go-cart.Chris enlisted the
help o Zach, who guredit would be un and also alearning experience.
It was a learningexperience or both othem. Tey thoughtabout how they want-ed the go-cart to lookand built it according-ly. Tings that lookedsimple, took time andthought.
We put it together aswe went along. We knewwhat we wanted to do, sowe just tried it. I some-thing didnt work, thatswhen we had to problemsolve, said Chris.
His experience x-ing things on the armhelped. Chris learnedhow to weld rom hisdad, and Chris taughtZach.
An old traveling gunirrigator, sitting in thewoods or close to 20years and once used toirrigate crops, becametheir go-cart rame andront hood. Tey evenused the original tires. An old snowmobile en-gine, ound in a junkyardnear Blackduck, t underthe ve-oot yellow irri-gator hood.
It worked. I justhad to have someonego through the carbure-tor, said Chris, addingwith smile, I really dontknow how to do thatyet.
A gas tank rom ajunkyard car was posi-tioned under the hood, and an old boat seat inthe Meyers attic becamethe go-cart seat, sur-rounded by a roll cagerom an old hayrack.
Our only rule wasit had to have a seatbeltand roll cage, said Geri.
Even the two exhaustpipes, on the ront end othe hood, are used.
It took 20 minutesto saw the exhaust pipes
of an old Dodge, saidChris.A garage door track roma shed on the Meyer armwas used as the chainguard.
Dad said anythingthat we could nd here,we could have. Te restwe had to buy, saidChris.
He spent around$300 or tire tubes, rearaxles, bearings, a battery,a chain and other smallparts, purchased local-ly rom the GreenwaldFarm Center and TullRepair.
Karl smiles whentalking about their do-nation to the project owelding wire, gas andother shop supplies.
Tats okay, because
they are having un withit, said Karl.Parts that make their
go-cart unique are hornsrom a junkyard vehicleand an old chain romthe irrigator, which theyrolled up and positionedon the ront grill o thego-cart; a grill whichthey welded.
Challenges came upwhen building the go-cart.
With a rear axle, thehardest part was how toget the power to the back
wheels because the mo-tor is in the ront, saidChris.
At times, they stilldeal with issues, like thechain coming of, es-pecially when they aredoing doughnuts in thearmyard, but they putthe chain right back onand of they go.
Tey need to short-en the chain, said Karl.
Built solid and with
mainly used parts, Chrisand Zach said their go-cart turned out betterthan expected.
Tats what makes itours, said Chris.
Its the cheapest ed-ucation they will everget, said Karl.
Zach said there isanother plus to buildingtheir own go-cart.
You know how tox something i it breaks. You dont need a com-puter to tell you, he said.
O course, its really
Chris Meyer (sitting) and Zach Zink constructed thisgo-cart from scratch.
not done yet.Its nished un-
til you want to make itbetter. We always addand change things, saidChris.
In other words, itsnever going to be n-ished.
Since its a home-made go-cart, it doesntleave the arm much.Well, except when Chrisand Zach drove it in the
Greenwald Barley DaysParade.Tey are content to
drive it down the dirtarm road, now sur-rounded by cornstalks. All it takes is the pull oa chord to get the enginegoing and it can be heardroaring or miles; smokecoming out o the ex-haust pipes.
My dad, (Red Mey-er) and Geris dad, JoeRueter, have even drivenit, said Karl. So have aew o Chris and Zachs
riends.Chris already has his
next project almost readyto be put together. Fromthe back o the shop hecarries collected partsan engine, tires, a seatand handle barssettingup what will eventually
be a mini-bike.Its the un o doing
it; the challenge, saidChris, who will attendAlex ech next year ordiesel mechanics.
Building is moreun than buying.
