Trafalgar Park is the site of the ‘French Redoubt’, a fort with cannon built by a French garrison in 1781 to keep the English out. Nice try. Contains avenues of ancient ficus trees and an Olympic-size swimming pool, for good measure. The Altona Hotel. The Grand Old Lady of Woodstock. Erected in 1909, it originally served as a club and refreshment station for Cape Flats farmers wending their way home from the early morning market. Intricate facades abound on every street, dating back to the late 19th century. More and more are being restored to life, to be cherished once again. A gardening project that has blossomed into a beautiful way to green and smarten up the streets of Observatory. 3 Real cheese. A choice of 150 artisan cheeses, from 40 farms countrywide, and the stories of those behind them. And lovely, smiley service. 33 Delos. At 181 Albert Road. For antique chandeliers, reproduction lighting, and furniture for private homes, businesses and hotels. If you see a chandelier being trolleyed along a street, you know you’re close to the Delos showroom. And a black and white ceramic tile entrance that feels like the London Underground. 11 The Kitchen. 10 The Deli. Two popular, buzzy lunch- time eateries on Sir Lowry Road. In 2011, Michelle Obama famously visited The Kitchen and sampled the Koshieri Rice Pilaf, Aubergine Ratatouille, Beetroot, Chopped Turkish Salad, Falafel and Hummus. Ruth Prowse School of Art. Now a national monument, this building formed a part of the site of one of the first European farms in the area originally known as Rooibloem, later as Roodebloem (c.1700). Named for Ruth Prowse, art doyen, and now the alma mater of many fine fine artists. Horse and Cart. Supermarket Trolley. The old and the new way of keeping the neighbourhood clean. For artefacts, indoor and outdoor eating, a deli and a bakery. 6 The Woodstock Foundry is a recently refurbished, 100 year-old heritage building, now home to a number of designer and boutique stores, including Vogel Design and Selah. It has a working foundry, open to the public. 9 Salt Circle Arcade. A Boutique Mall just across the road from the Old Biscuit Mill. Ma Mère Maison makes licking-good sweets in the traditional way. Palm Tree, walled. Ask the average Capetonian how many palm trees there are in Woodstock. Fifteen? Forty? At last count, 672. A veritable oasis. By the way, there are also 18 parks in Woodstock, Salt River and Observatory. Believe it or not, there are more than seventy furniture-related stores in Woodstock. Design studios, custom made, junk shops, second-hand stores, and collectables, new, re-invented and revamped. 2 Deckle Edge and 1 Artsource. Two well-stocked art supply stores for your imagination and your invention. One on Sir Lowry Road, Woodstock, the other on Lower Main Road, Observatory. 33 Revolution Records. Lower Main Road, Observatory. They buy and sell CDs, DVDs and lots of vinyl LPs. Many lovely sounds here. St Phillips Street. Ingenuity: a designer basketball hoop, just hanging out, on the street in Woodstock. 7 Exposure Gallery. Artists, Art, Lomography and Photography showcase. A clever and popular little shop, packed full of contemporary crafts and gifts. Wrought iron metal filigree. It was a great way to add finesse, style, extra shading and lightness in material to verandahs on free-standing houses and buildings as well as on terraces. 5 Flexmore House. Modern crochet design, fashion, and Missibaba leather bags can all be found on the 1st floor. 12 Design Afrika. Tucked away on Hares Avenue is Design Afrika, aka Binky’s Baskets. Big or small, from all over Africa, you’ll find a basket to cherish. 20 The Fabric House. Exquisite cuts, very exquisite cuts. 7 The Old Biscuit Mill. The most popular place in the hood. Packed with craft shops, fashion and art stores, restaurants and cafes, including the superb Test Kitchen and Burrata Italiano. The Saturday Neighbourgoods Market hosts over 100 speciality food traders. Cycle there, taxi there, bus, train, walk or - if you must - drive there. 12 The Woodstock Exchange. Trafalgar Park. 1905. Trafalgar Park is the site of the ‘French
Redoubt’, a fort with cannon built by a French garrison in 1781 to keep the
English out. Nice try. Contains avenues of ancient ficus trees and an Olympic-size
swimming pool, for good measure.
The Altona Hotel. The Grand Old Lady of Woodstock. Erected in 1909, it originally served as a club and refreshment station for Cape Flats farmers wending their way home from the early morning market.
Intricate facades abound on every street, dating back to
the late 19th century. More and more are being restored to life, to be cherished once again.
A gardening project that has blossomedinto a beautifulway to greenand smarten up the streets of Observatory.
3 Real cheese. A choice of 150
artisan cheeses, from 40 farms countrywide,
and the stories of those behind
them. And lovely, smiley service.
33 Delos. At 181 Albert Road. For antique chandeliers, reproduction lighting, and furniture for private homes, businesses and hotels. If you see a chandelier being trolleyed along a street, you know you’re close to the Delos showroom. Restoring and recycling relics from around the globe is what they do, brilliantly.
5 Crespella Café Creperie. Intimate and simple, with a mouth-watering array of crepes, and good coffee, beautifully executed.
12 Superette. The most famous meet-and-eatery in Woodstock. Try the excellent All Day Breakfast Sandwich, the Pork Belly, salads, the cakes. Great service, too. And a black and white ceramic tile entrance that feels like the London Underground.
11 The Kitchen. 10 The Deli. Two popular, buzzy lunch-time eateries on Sir Lowry Road. In 2011, Michelle Obama famously visited The Kitchen and sampled the Koshieri Rice Pilaf, Aubergine Ratatouille, Beetroot, Chopped Turkish Salad, Falafel and Hummus.
Ruth Prowse School of Art. Now a national monument, this building formed a part of the site of one of the first European farms in the area originally known as Rooibloem, later as Roodebloem (c.1700). Named for Ruth Prowse, art doyen, and now the alma mater of many fine fine artists.
Horse and Cart. Supermarket Trolley. The old and the new way of keeping the neighbourhood clean. Trolleys are everywhere and nothing of value is ever left behind.
Trafalgar Buildings. In 1937 Gerhardt Van Kalker began a career which established him as Cape Town’s pre-eminent family and portrait photographer. His studio was in the Trafalgar Buildings, at 47, Victoria Road.
’54 Chevrolet. Hidden behind walls, here and there, a car museum lingers. Keep your eyes peeled. (Ladas, this one’s for you.)
The official Woodstock Windsocks are the colour-draped washing lines that adorn the terraces. Typically on the front porch, baring all. Adding even more colour to the district.
6 Ravenscraig Mews was built in the 50’s. It contains the workshop of Mark Hilltout, a metal designer who upcycles old rusted, unwanted corrugated iron. And Luna, a manufacturer of wooden picture frames. And Flash Meat, where you can buy the meat the best restaurants buy, at wholesale prices.
Your one-stop specialist tyre shop. Drop it off and pick up later. Tubeless puncture, R25. With tube, R35.
Spencer Street Studio. Comprehensive figure drawing and painting classes.
Windy Woodstock. Where the Cape
Doctor blows hard. Windswept trees,
windswept people, wind-scrubbed
streets.
An authentic Woodstock telephone pole, supporting overhead power lines, cables and related equipment such as transformers and street lights. Never forget to look up from time to time.
Telkom Exchange Boxes. Metal boxes made beautiful in Observatory. Table Mountain, the Twelve Apostles and other iconic Cape Town vistas.
9 The Bromwell. Built in 1927, newly renovated by its current owner as a Boutique Mall. A top hat-and-tailed gentleman will greet you at the door. For artefacts, indoor and outdoor eating, a deli and a bakery.
6 The Woodstock Foundry is a recently refurbished, 100 year-old heritage building, now home to a number of designer and boutique stores, including Vogel Design and Selah. It has a working foundry, open to the public.9 Salt Circle Arcade. A Boutique Mall just across the road from the Old Biscuit Mill. Ma Mère Maison makes licking-good sweets in the traditional way.
Palm Tree, walled. Ask the average Capetonian how many palm trees there are in Woodstock. Fifteen?
Forty? At last count, 672. A veritable oasis. By the way, there
are also 18 parks in Woodstock, Salt River and Observatory.
Believe it or not, there are more than seventy furniture-related stores in Woodstock. Design studios, custom made, junk shops, second-hand stores, and collectables, new, re-invented and revamped.
2 Deckle Edge and 1 Artsource. Two well-stocked art supply stores for your imagination and your invention. One on Sir Lowry Road, Woodstock, the other on Lower Main Road, Observatory.
33 Revolution Records. Lower Main Road, Observatory. They buy and sell CDs, DVDs and lots of vinyl LPs. Many lovely sounds here.
St Phillips Street.Ingenuity: a designer
basketball hoop, just hanging out, on the street in Woodstock.
7 Exposure Gallery. Artists, Art, Lomography and Photography showcase. A clever and popular little shop, packed full of contemporary crafts and gifts.
Wrought iron metal filigree. It was a great way to add finesse, style, extra shading and lightness in material to verandahs on free-standing houses and buildings as well as on terraces.
5 Flexmore House. Modern crochet design, fashion, and Missibaba leather bags can all be found on the 1st floor.
12 Design Afrika. Tucked away on Hares Avenue is Design Afrika, aka Binky’s Baskets. Big or small, from all over Africa, you’ll find a basket to cherish.
20 The Fabric House. Exquisite cuts, very exquisite cuts.
7 The Old Biscuit Mill. The most popular place in the hood. Packed with craft shops, fashion and art stores, restaurants and cafes, including the superb Test Kitchen and Burrata Italiano. The Saturday Neighbourgoods Market hosts over 100 speciality food traders. Cycle there, taxi there, bus, train, walk or - if you must - drive there.
12 The Woodstock Exchange. The newest refurbished property development in Woodstock, with 11,000 square meters of studio, retail and small business space, including Google HQ. A place to work, play, interact, exhibit and flourish. An incubator for young fledging businesses. With Superette at the main entrance.
12 Fish4Africa. Their slogan is ‘Anything fresher is still swimming’. With eight other fish shops dotting Woodstock, it’s why many Capetonians do their fishing here.
13 The Old Castle Brewery. Designed by New York architect H. Steinmann in 1901, it was saved from demolition and restored to usefulness and its former glory over a period of twenty years. In Beach Road, which serves as a reminder of where the shoreline once ran.
31 Obs Books. Readers! Over five thou-sand 2nd hand books, specialising in
Africana and SA biographies. For more try 30 Blank Books, opposite
the Old Biscuit Mill. And 12 Bibliophilia, near The Woodstock Exchange.
16 Kwaai Lappies. Every fashion designer from every corner of the country
knows this goldmine of fabrics and trimmings.
14 Cafe Ganesh. Well established, well frequented African bistro with an earthy ambience and a spicy atmosphere. The lemon meringue pie is exquisitely decadent.
No 9. Barron Street, Woodstock. This rather unassuming old warehouse is now home to The Alex Hamilton Studio Gallery, The Scan Shop, and E. T. and H. Canvasses.
8 The Palms. Originally the site of one of Cape Town’s earliest bakeries, where Baumann’s Biscuits and Duens Bread were
made. it’s now a well-established shopping centre for a variety of famous decor and lifestyle stores.
And there’s the food, art, fashion and furniture. Lock Stock Market on
Saturday mornings, too.
3 Cape Bag Depot. 1935. 177 Albert Rd. It’s an institution, like an old favourite restaurant, full of colour and history. For bags, canvas, mats, rope, tarpaulin and twines, at extremely competitive prices. And the palm tree squashed against the front wall shades nothing.

23 Fargo Trading. A nice spicy spice shop. Tasty. Anything and everything, just where lower Main Road and Albert Road meet in Salt River.
A local icon is a mosquito bug belonging to designer 12 Charlie H. And a pair of the mapmaker’s beloved 12 Grandt Mason Original footwear, dating back to 2008. Both have fashion ateliers in the new Woodstock Exchange, on 66 Albert Road.
28 Woodstock Brewery. Albert Road. Under construction, a microbrewery which will brew European, American and South African craft beer. Will be uncorked in 2013, along with a restaurant and bar.
Penryn Street. Tucked away in Penryn Street, at the back of a small park, are a group of artists and designers who work in wood, metal and stone. The park contains many re-homed trees, transplanted from the Green Point Stadium site.
Some roads in Salt River and Observatory are named for the great old poets - Coleridge, Burns, Dryden, Kipling, Pope, Tennyson and Arnold, among others.
