ACPS Blue & White Newsletter 4 20/08/2014 1/2W CLASS NEWS There has been great excitement in 1/2W this term while studying the HSIE ‘Wet and Dry environment’ unit. Earlier in the term the class looked at the issue of logging and students wrote a discussion outlining their views. We have also studied different animals from both wet and dry environments while learning to write information reports. Recently, the excitement has been due to students delivering their HSIE projects to the class. Week 5 saw Stage 1 students head off to Thalgarrah to explore the Gara River and the bush land surrounding it. Students were given scoops to collect a variety of living creatures from the river. Many living things were collected including shrimp, mayfly larvae and leeches. These were all closely examined under microscopes before being returned to the river. I look forward to the Book Character Parade to see what imaginative costumes the students and parents have created. Mr Commens and 1/2W 5/6R CLASS NEWS Term 3 is an exceptionally busy one for our class. We are currently involved in a film project which sees a small group working to make a short film based on the Armidale Community Garden. This film will become part of the Council's website Lifestyle 2350. It will also be entered into the Northwest Film Festival which helps highlight community projects and student involvement. David Waugh has been working with these students, demonstrating filming techniques, photography, refining interviews and editing. We have also selected our Da Vinci Decathlon teams for this year's event. We will be entering a Year 6 team and also a Year 5 team this year. This is an academic gala day where students are pitted against teams from around the north and west of New South Wales and complete challenging activities in Maths, English, Science, Art, Poetry, Philosophy, Cartography, Engineering, problem solving and code breaking, and general knowledge. One of our most exciting projects currently being undertaken is the Kidpreneur $50 Challenge. Pairs of students are responsible for starting and running a business from scratch, making their product and finally selling their goods. This is an excellent way to learn about 'real world' financial skills of budgeting, managing money and finally determining which charitable organisation to support with their profits. PRINCIPAL’S REPORT—WEEK 6

This week, I would like to focus on the fine achievements

and efforts of our students. At Assembly on Tuesday I had

the opportunity to present awards ranging from Credits and

Distinctions in the UNSW Science Competition, to Athletics

Champions from our School Athletics Carnival to school

Silver and Gold Awards. I would like to make particular

mention of our first Gold Award recipients for 2014,

Charlotte Coventry and Seb Brotherson – well done. I

would also like to mention our swimmers who competed at

the Hannah Shield, our basketballers who progressed to the

top eight in the state winning their last game against

Tacking Point Public School, our touch football team playing

the NW final against Ross Hill Public School on Thursday,

our Tournament of the Minds teams who will compete this

Sunday and our school debating teams who will compete in

the zone debating final in the near future.

Mention must also be made of two of our individual students

Mangarchot Maluach who is representing NSW PSSA at

the National Basketball Championships in Townsville this

week and Jane Spencer who will compete in the North

West final of the Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking

competition. As you can see from the list of achievements

our students and staff should be very proud of what they

do and achieve and I would like to congratulate all students

on their contributions to our great school. Congratulations,

must also go to Mrs Maria Russell – teacher of 5/6R for

being awarded a Premier’s Teaching Scholarship for 2015.

These scholarships are highly sought after and entitle the

recipient to travel overseas for research purposes in

current trends and initiatives in education. Mrs Russell will

be travelling to Parliament House in a couple of weeks to

receive her award and the Armidale City Public School

community congratulates her on her fine achievement.

We are currently working on developing our school plan for

2015 – 2017. The new approach to school planning brings

together a number of reforms to give NSW public schools

greater authority to meet the needs of their communities,

to improve the quality of teaching in schools and to improve

outcomes for all students. It is highly strategic, focussing

on 3 key areas for improvement determined by the school in

consultation with its community, to ensure a profound

difference to the ongoing growth and development of the

school. Each strategic direction will articulate the school’s

approach and identify the key improvement measures using

the new 5P methodology – Purpose, People, Processes,

Practices and Products. The product will be an individual

school plan, contextually driven to support the achievement

of the key improvement measures to address the needs of

students at the local level. In collaboration with our school

parent body and community we want to create a shared

vision for Armidale City Public School. Any parent who

wishes to have input, please email me to register your

interest.

An official Armidale City Public School Facebook page has

been set up and this page will be kept up to date with whole

school events on a regular basis. This is another way for

families to see what is going on at the school. The address is

https://www.facebook.com/armidalecitypublicschool. If you

would like to ask any questions about this page please

contact the office.

During Term 3 all classes will be taking part in child

protection lessons as part of the PDHPE curriculum for

NSW DEC. If any parent would like to discuss the content

of these lessons, please contact your child’s teacher.

I would like to remind parents and students that supervision

commences at 8.40am each day and at the end of the

school day at 3.10pm, students are required to head

directly home, to their bus stops or to collection points for

parents. We thank parents for their support with this

matter.

Thank you, to all students and staff for their efforts in

contributing to our Book Week parade this week. Your

costumes were wonderful. Next week is Literacy and

Numeracy Week and each class will be participating in a

variety of activities throughout the week to recognise the

importance of Literacy and Numeracy in our school.
