In my article in our previous newsletter I provided a comparison of the current system with the new system starting with Year 11 students in 2019 You can access the information contained in my prior article through this link httpwwwindoorooshseqeduauwp-contentuploads20160811-Edition-21-July-2017-1pdf Below I have included some further information relating to Tertiary Entrance changes
Current System New System
Tertiary Entrance Statements and OPs
OP-eligible students receive a Tertiary Entrance Statement in addition to the Senior Statement and Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) This shows the Overall Position (OP) and Field Positions (FPs) The OP is a rank from 1 to 25 calculated by the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) The calculation of OPs and FPs uses studentsrsquo achievements in 20 semester units of Authority subjects (the equivalent of five subjects) including at least three subjects for four semesters each scaled against group results in the Queens-land Core Skills (QCS) Test
Tertiary Entrance Statements will no longer be issued by the QCAA The Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) will replace the OP An ATAR is a number between 000 and 9995 in increments of 005 It will be derived from achievement across a broad range of learning achievements using a process of inter-subject scaling An ATAR will be calculated from an eligible studentrsquos best five subject results one of which may be an Applied subject that does not include an external assessment or a competency-based vocational education and training certificate at a level III or above Students must satisfactorily complete a QCAA English subject (C or better) to be eligible for an ATAR However a studentrsquos result in English will only contribute to their ATAR if it is one of their five best subject results
Tertiary Entrance and QTAC
The QCAA is responsible for tertiary entrance including the calculation of OPs QTAC manages entrance to most tertiary institutions in Queensland For OP-eligible students the OP is used for tertiary entrance in Queensland For OP-ineligible students QTAC calculates a tertiary selection rank using schedules that consider results in the best 20 semester units of Authority Authority-registered subjects andor VET modules recorded on the Senior Statement
QTAC will be responsible for tertiary entrance in Queensland The ATAR calculated by QTAC will be the primary mechanism used for school leavers seeking entrance to tertiary study in Queensland QTAC will no longer operate schedules for ranking students who are ineligible for an ATAR
BAGS IN CLASSROOM POLICY UPDATE
Unfortunately this year we have experienced an unacceptable level of theft in our school that despite our best efforts has seen staff unable to identify the thief or thieves This has occurred across various areas of the school Consequently the installation of video cameras has not been practicable and such a surveillance mechanism would not I believe be in keeping with our schoolrsquos value of Each personrsquos dignity As a consequence our Indooroopilly Leadership Team has taken the decision to allow students to carry their bags with them into classrooms This will be a trial throughout term 3 and students have been advised of our expectations that bags are stored safely under their chairs or in designated classroom areas to ensure workplace health and safety practices are implemented and the chance of students or teachers tripping over bags and injuring themselves is minimised It will be an individual choice as to whether or not bags are taken into classrooms but parents may wish to discuss this new policy with your student or students in terms of safeguarding property

It is the time of year again when the Department of Education and Training (DET) undertakes a survey of parentscaregivers students and staff members to gauge their satisfaction with important aspects of schooling
Sixty students in each of Years 8 and 11 are randomly selected to participate in the survey All staff members can choose to complete surveys and all parents are also able to participate
The results of the survey help us to evaluate and to reflect on how well the school is functioning and identify areas for future development In addition your responses can provide validation of those aspects with which you are satisfied The survey results are also an important part of the schools Annual Report For these reasons I hope that you will complete the questionnaire and help make the school a better place for your students
The survey is to be completed online and will remain open until 25 August A letter which provides the online access details for the ParentCaregiver Survey will be distributed to students on Monday The surveys are not linked to individuals and you cannot be identified in the survey results that will be reported back to the school or by the department
Years 8 and 11 students will be completing the survey next week

The Creative Generation Visual Art Award is an annual event initiated by the Queensland government for excellence in Art A state-wide competition and travelling exhibition showcasing the work of senior secondary school students from across Queensland enables young artists the opportunity to exhibit their work to a geographically broader audience This year the work of four Year 12 Indooroopilly State High School students has been selected for regional display the first stage of a state-wide competition which will culminate next year in an exhibition of the finalistsrsquo work at Brisbanersquos Gallery of Modern Art
Ally Ayscough Natalia Gallardo Sophie Galvin and Annabelle Goonasekera are all painters and their contributions here are noteworthy not only in the technical skill evidenced in each workrsquos application but also in terms of the theoretical knowledge that led to their development The works are all portraits utilising the traditional technique of oil painting but it is in the impetus of their conception the application of the paint and the theoretical underpinnings of each unique narrative that each piece stands alone
In terms of technique Allyrsquos painting Sweet Water is perhaps the most lsquotraditionalrsquo of the four in that it is painted lsquoala primarsquo in oils and on canvas Painted from a rsquoselfiersquo however it differs from the others in its spontaneity and in the self-imposed discipline of her strict creative process Inspired by culturally embedded notions of femininity her aim is to create an image which combines a lsquofemininersquo (pastel) palette with an expressive gesturally heroic painterly surface and in so doing to debunk traditional constructs pertaining to ideals of the feminine
Nataliarsquos painting Abuelito with its dynamic crusted coagulated surface deals with deeply embedded memories of dread and fear Instigated by recurring dreams its very creation and her use of brooms knives and other decidedly lsquoartlessrsquo tools was a deliberate ploy utilised in order to spontaneously unleash both painterly gesture and her pent-up emotion
Sophiersquos self-portrait Can you see me yet is inspired in part by the painters Odd Nerdrum and Sandro Chia Nerdrum for his surfaces and Chia for his agitated brushwork and electric colour palette With this work she has explored the connections between her personality and her physical appearance by combining an allusion to physical movement within the context of a traditional oil self-portrait
Annabellersquos work Christabelle on first viewing appears to be a slick reproduction of a painterly portrait study by an extremely skilled academic painter Closer examination reveals however that the allusion to reproduction is in fact the result of her painstaking application of the paint onto the reverse side of an acrylic sheet Painting the details first Annabelle has lsquopainted backwardsrsquo covering the image as she has progressed to eventually create a work to be viewed from the other side of its support The outcome is a painting which combines the lsquoslicknessrsquo of a photographic reproduction with the painterly gesture of traditional portraiture bringing to mind questions pertaining to the authenticity of an image the relevance of craft in contemporary culture and the aura or lsquocult valuersquo of a hand-made work of art
The studentsrsquo work will be on display at the Brisbane Institute of Art Wilston from September 4th
to the 9th
At the regional exhibition award ceremony on Saturday the 9
th students will be presented with certificates of
excellence commendation regional encouragement and participation Noel Herberg Senior Visual Art Teacher

AVIATION STUDIES
The skyrsquos the limitrsquo
New Recreational Pilot Licence half the price of
Private Pilot Licence
Aviation Studies is a subject for students who are looking forward to either a career in aviation or flying for pleasure
Students are able to enrol in Aviation Studies Years 10 11 and 12
Students go to a flying school at Archerfield Airport each week during the year Initially students work towards
performing their first solo and must be 15 years of age to do so Students work towards a Recreational Pilot Licence
(RPL) and then after successfully completing navigation flights gain a Private Pilot Licence
Students will be required to pay their chosen flying school each week for their lesson This is a pay-as-you-go
arrangement with the hire rate of an aircraft and instructor plus landing fees meaning that each flying week costs
between $300 and $400 The total cost to attain solo flight is estimated to be $6000 with a further $5000 to
Recreational Pilot Licence with the total cost of a Private Pilot Licence being roughly $21000
The theory comprising Flight Radio Operatorrsquos Licence (FROL) Basic Aeronautical Knowledge (BAK) and Private
Pilot Licence Theory (PPL) is studied during weekly class time and study at home Topics include aircraft
familiarisation aviation terminology communications aircraft general knowledge and control rules and procedures of flight theory of flight
meteorology and navigation Students also practise flights in the schoolrsquos flight simulator during these lessons It is preferable for students to
complete the aviation medical and apply for an Aviation Security Identification Card (ASIC) and student pilot license before commencing flight
training as the first solo flight is not permitted until the documentation has been processed by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA)

This term the Year 10 English Communication class watched two movies The Sapphires and Rabbit Proof Fence After watching the movies we worked on a magazine project All students came up with their own ideas and designed and wrote a magazine The magazines were about travel horror pets and famous stars
For my magazine I wrote on travel and I interviewed the Australian actress Deborah Mailman My questions were about travel and life I emailed the questions to Deb Mailman and she got back to me by sending a video where she talked to us and told us how everything was going in Sydney She told us how grateful she was that we sent her an email As a class we were star-struck that she took the time to get back to us
