*LITANY Karl Dietrich One: Let us gather to praise the One on whom God’s Spirit came to rest. All: We gather in the name of Jesus, God’s anointed one. One: Good news! The days of anticipation have passed and prophets’ visions are revealed. All: We celebrate the realization of ancient dreams. We rejoice that ancient hopes are

accomplished. One: We stand amazed that the scriptures’ words of promise are not empty, but have been fulfilled in our

hearing. Let us pray. *UNISON PRAYER

Eternal God, give us the perspective to live with faithfulness in our day. Let us neither dwell in the past nor in the future but in the present, where we may see your continuous gifts of grace. Keep us ever faithful to the teaching and the person of Jesus, the one you anointed to release, restore, proclaim, and free. Let us hear his words to us and respond today. Amen.

ATTENDING TO GOD’S WORD

ANTIPHONAL READING FROM THE PSALTER Clergy, Cantor, and Congregation

Antiphon: Congregation may join the cantor in singing the antiphon.

Psalm 138 GARY ALAN SMITH

Cantor and Congregation

One: 1 I give you thanks, O LORD, with my whole heart; before the gods I sing your praise; 2 I bow down towards your holy temple and give thanks to your name for your steadfast love and your faithfulness; for you have exalted your name and your word above everything. 3 On the day I called, you answered me, you increased my strength of soul.

Cantor and Congregation

One: 4 All the kings of the earth shall praise you, O LORD, for they have heard the words of your mouth. 5 They shall sing of the ways of the LORD, for great is the glory of the LORD. 6 For though the LORD is high, he regards the lowly; but the haughty he perceives from far away.

Cantor and Congregation

One: 7 Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve me against the wrath of my enemies; you stretch out your hand, and your right hand delivers me. 8 The LORD will fulfill his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O LORD, endures forever. Do not forsake the work of your hands.

RESPONSE

One: May God who commanded light to shine out of darkness enlighten our way today. All: Amen.

READING FROM THE HEBREW SCRIPTURES Rev. David W. Johnson

One: God’s message finds utterance in our midst. All: We wait and listen for God’s word to us today.

Isaiah 61:1-4

1The spirit of the LORD God is upon me, because the LORD has anointed me; he has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed, to bind up the broken-hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and release to the prisoners; 2 to proclaim the year of the LORD’S favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn; 3 to provide for those who mourn in Zion—to give them a garland instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the mantle of praise instead of a faint spirit. They will be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, to display his glory. 4 They shall build up the ancient ruins, they shall raise up the former devastations; they shall repair the ruined cities, the devastations of many generations.

RESPONSE One: Hear the proclamation of good news! All: God’s message of sustaining hope is spoken to those in need.

CALL TO THE GOSPEL LESSON Dr. Casey G. Baggott

One: Silence in us, O God, any voice but your own. All: May your Word be proclaimed and received here today.

Luke 4:14-21

14 Then Jesus, filled with the power of the Spirit, returned to Galilee, and a report about him spread through all the surrounding country. 15 He began to teach in their synagogues and was praised by everyone. 16 When he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he went to the synagogue on the sabbath day, as was his custom. He stood up to read, 17and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written: 18 ‘The Spirit of the LORD is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, 19 to proclaim the year of the LORD’S favor.’ 20And he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. 21Then he began to say to them, ‘Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.’

RESPONSE

One: Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church. All: Thanks be to God!

ANTHEM “The Heavens are Telling” from The Creation Mary Murphy, soprano Franz Josef Haydn Kent Ahern, tenor

Josh Pinnock, bass and the Chancel Choir

The heavens are telling the glory of God, the wonder of his work displays the firmament.

To-day that is coming, speaks it the day, the night that is gone, to following night. The heavens are telling the glory of God,

the wonder of his work displays the firmament. In all the lands resounds the word,

never unperceived, ever understood. The heavens are telling the glory of God,

the wonder of his work displays the firmament.

SERMON “Cliff Notes” Dr. Robert T. Baggott

ANNOUNCEMENTS...

MISSION MINISTRY MISSION WATCH: GIFFORD YOUTH ACHIEVEMENT CENTER: This week we recognize the wonderful work being done by Gifford Youth Achievement Center. Their mission, with God’s guidance, is to offer quality programs for children of all ages that will develop self-esteem, teach character, and encourage each individual to reach his or her ultimate potential; and nurture partnerships with various community entities in Gifford and the surrounding municipalities of Indian River County. Community Church is one of those entities that has partnered with GYAC since its inception back in 1998. Your missions giving allows them to continue their mentoring programs, vocational job training, and general operations. We are proud to partner with Gifford Youth Achievement Center.

GLOBAL PRAYER PARTNER: GERMANY. Rosalind Gnatt serves with the Evangelical Church of Hesse-Nassau, Germany. The State of Hessen is among the most prosperous in Germany. Yet, just a 7-minute walk from the center of Wiesbaden, the state capital, brings one to the Bergkirche quarter, where some 40% of the children live below the poverty line. Over the last decade, Germany’s quality of life has gone from number 4 to number 14 in the world, and the people of Bergkirche feel it. The Bergkirche daycare/kindergarten (KITA) serves 120+ children from 19 nations. Every Monday morning, a number of children arrive hungry, sometimes without shoes, or with shoes too small and worn out to do anything but hurt their young feet. Our little congregation has agreed to use our worship collection to help the KITA supply shoes and other necessities for these children. Prayer: Lord, Seventy-four years ago, you called Germany, decimated by the moral atrocity of the Holocaust, back into life. Clear-headed leaders came together to create a democracy with a socially just mandate. Help us to be sisters and brothers together in the work of creating a just world for all; help us to be servants in building up the kingdom of heaven on earth. Amen.

“LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR” MISSION FAIR: The Fair will be held on Saturday, February 9th at Community Church of Vero Beach from 10:00 a.m. - noon. Mark your calendar to come volunteer to make no-sew fleece blankets for The Source, hygiene kits for the homeless, and meal kits for the Food Pantry of Indian River. Our brothers and sisters from Temple Beth Shalom and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are joining us in these efforts. We hope to see you there!

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY: Join us on Saturady, February 2nd for the build at 2065 Waterside Way SW in Vero
