Get Smart Old-style tailoring meets whiz-bang technology in the world of suits.
S TO RY BY A K A S H A RO R A PH OTO GR A PH Y BY DA M I A N B E N N E T T
THERE are three things you need to know
about wearing a suit this season:
1. If you like a traditional look, the double-
breasted three-piece suit is back and
ideal for when you want to dress up.
2. Don’t underestimate the power of an
unstructured suit. “It’s perfect to wear
over a T-shirt or with a pair of trainers,”
says GQ Australia’s fashion editor, Barnaby
Ash. “Men who don’t have to wear suits
to work can wear this one to the ofce,
dinner or even to a bar.”
3. The classic suit is getting a technology
kick. Case in point? Paul Smith’s “A Suit
to Travel In”. Made entirely of wool
using an innovative weaving technique,
it claims to be crease-resistant. We tested
that theory and put the suit through its
paces, wearing it for a day – in the car,
on public transport and at work. We even
folded it in half and stored it overnight
on a rack – just like you would in the
overhead locker of an aircraft. Hallelujah,
gents. There was not a crease in sight.

① Don’t even think about
cramming that suit into
your suitcase. You’ll crush it.
② Hold it upright and pop one
of its shoulders inside-out.
③ Insert the un-popped
shoulder into the popped one.
④ Make sure the shoulders
are aligned with one another
and there are no creases.
⑤ Hold the jacket at the top
and fold it vertically in half.
⑥ Fold the jacket horizontally
in half so its top is lined up
with its hem. Place it in your
suitcase and you’re done.

Jewellery
On the eve of the Diamond Guild Australia Jewellery Awards 2015, we reveal the newest trends in diamonds – from bold designs to spectacular experiments with colour.
S TO RY BY A K A S H A RO R A
Shine Bright
IF YOUR wardrobe is dominated by black,
you’ll be pleased to know that the trend is
extending to diamonds. “A few years ago
small black diamonds were just being used
as a design feature,” says David Fardon, the
consulting director at fne jewellers Linneys,
which has stores in Perth and Sydney.
“But now you see a lot of pieces where the
central stone is a large black diamond.”
Legend has it that the frst diamond
engagement ring was commissioned by
Archduke Maximilian of Austria for his
betrothed, Mary of Burgundy, in 1477.
While diamond rings back then looked
more like delicate fowers, the designs are
bold and dramatic now. “The concept of fne,
delicate jewellery with fligree is passing,”
says Olivar Musson, creative director of
Sydney’s Musson Jewellers. “Rings are
getting bolder with more metal and volume.”
While most women will choose a white
diamond when it comes to a certain special
occasion, coloured diamonds are having
a moment. “Argyle pink and blue diamonds,
and Australian Ellendale yellow ones are
hugely popular these days,” says Musson.
If you buy into the coloured-diamond
trend, you’ll need to decide what metal
the jewel is to be set in, says Musson. Pink
diamonds work best with rose gold, yellow
with yellow gold and blue diamonds look
“edgy” with white gold.
And black diamonds? “Black gems look
classic in all metals.” Knew it.
Awards season
The Qantas magazine is partnering
with Diamond Guild Australia
(diamondguild.com.au) to present
the Diamond Guild Australia
Jewellery Awards 2015.
Held every two years, the awards
offer our leading jewellers the chance
to showcase innovative design and
Australia’s extraordinary diamonds.
The finalists across seven categories
– including Emerging Talent, Red Carpet,
Diamond Solitaire and Fancy Colour
– will be announced in the October
issue of the Qantas magazine before
winners are unveiled at a gala dinner
in Sydney in October.
We’ll profile the winners in the
December issue, which happens
to be just in time for Christmas…

Beauty
YOUR best friend when travelling? An eye
palette that can also work on cheeks and
brows. “It’s easy to create diferent looks
with one palette,” says MAC Cosmetics
senior make-up artist Carol Mackie.
“Use shimmery shades as a highlighter
or bronzer, apply lighter shades to the
inner corner of the eye to give it sparkle
and fll in brows with darker colours.”

What’s in your in-flight
beauty bag?
SK-II masks for hydration,
a non-sticky rosewater
spray, ArmaForce immune-
boosting tablets and Sante
FX Neo Mint Eye Drops
from Japan. The drops
burn initially but then you
get this fresh sensation
in your eyes. It makes you
feel really, really awake.
What’s one product
you can’t live without?
Biologique Recherche
Lotion P50. It’s an
exfoliating toner that
balances and renews the
skin and helps with spots.
Is there a budget beauty
buy that’s best in class?
The Himalaya Herbals Lip
Balm is hydrating, not too
shiny and works perfectly
under a matte lip.
Is there a make-up trick
every woman should know?
Use a highlighter on the
cheekbones. I recommend
Kryolan’s Illusion cream in
Cashmere. Apply it with
your pinky finger and
literally press it along on
the top edge of your bone
so it catches the light. It
also brightens the eyes
and softens dark circles.
What multi-tasker
should we take on a trip?
Coconut oil, because you
can use it to hydrate your
body, face and hair. It’s
great for beach holidays.

▴ WHAT The Langham
WHERE 89-113 Kent Street, Sydney
langhamhotels.com
Only a hill stands between the
chaos of The Rocks Markets and
the calm of The Langham but
it’s enough to lend this hotel –
located at the leafy, quiet end
of Kent Street – a far-from-the-
madding-crowd feel. After
a $30-million makeover, The
Langham reopened late last
year, unveiling a grand lobby
lit by the sun and beautifully
appointed rooms. Check in frst
and then take the lift down to
the hotel’s underground Day Spa
by Chuan. For total relaxation,
try the 90-minute Urban
Release Package – it comprises
a full-body exfoliation using
a handmade red mandarin,
lime and cranberry mix, and
an invigorating massage. The
spa also ofers a Gentleman’s
Menu with treatments ranging
from a 60-minute facial to the
seriously indulgent Rescue
Package, which includes
a facial, massage and scalp
treatment – the perfect way
to switch of and revive.

▾ WHAT Sofitel Brisbane Hotel
WHERE 249 Turbot Street, Brisbane
sofitelbrisbane.com.au
The Opal Rasul Steam Temple
might be located directly above
Brisbane’s Central station
but the cavernous room lined
with turquoise tiles could be
straight out of The Arabian
Nights. Part of Stephanie’s Spa
Retreat at the Softel hotel, it
ofers a Moroccan-inspired
DIY body-brushing treatment.
Three diferent muds are
provided – for legs, upper body
and face – and the idea is to get
seriously messy before steam
pumps into the room (like
smoke from Aladdin’s lamp)
until nothing is visible but the
star-like lights in the ceiling.
The body-cleansing treatment
lasts an hour and you can follow
it with a massage to round of
the experience. The best bit?
When it’s time for bed, your
room is just metres away.
The Softel ofers a great range
of accommodation but ask
for a suite ending with “01”
– on any foor – if you want
a corner spot with city and
Anzac Square views.
▴▴ WHAT Crown Towers, Melbourne
WHERE 8 Whiteman Street,
Southbank
crownhotels.com.au
There are 17 treatment rooms
at the Crown Towers’s Crown
Spa, including two exclusively
for couples. Spend some time in
the hammam-style steam room
then follow it with a full-body
mud wrap to open pores and
purge toxins. When it comes
to the spa menu, our pick is
the White Caviar Illuminating
Treatment – a rejuvenating
90-minute facial. Oh, and the
spa also has a hair and beauty
studio. If you really want to
turn the luxe factor up a notch,
check into one of the villas on
the hotel’s 30th or 31st foors
– 130 square metres of real
estate with a high-ceilinged
living room, a spacious bedroom
and an all-marble bathroom
with Salvatore Ferragamo
toiletries. Yes, the view out the
windows is of the CBD but there’s
something calming about city
views minus the sound.
▴▾ WHAT Hotel Realm, Canberra
WHERE 18 National Circuit, Barton
hotelrealm.com.au
When it comes to cutting-edge
wellness treatments, it’s hard
to beat Hotel Realm’s Mudd
the Spa. The centrepiece here
is the Vichy shower – a slatted
wooden massage bed with seven
overhead jets (below). The
process begins with a full-body
exfoliation using lemongrass
salt glow or crushed lime-sugar
sea salt crystals, which is
followed by a gentle shower
and a mineral-balm application.
The hydrotherapeutic treatment
is believed to cleanse, relax
and rejuvenate your body in
one go. The spa also ofers the
Body Cocoon experience, which
starts of with a pistachio-scrub
exfoliation, after which your
body is covered in a cleansing
mask before you take a seat in
a Body Cocoon “capsule” and
allow it to steam and gently
water-massage you. Of course,
there’s plenty to choose from
if all you’re after is a traditional
massage and there’s a good
selection of male-specifc
treatments. Check into one
of the rooms on the hotel’s
Executive (fourth) foor
for uninterrupted views of
Parliament House. It’s a gentle
reminder that, while you
may feel a world away, you’re
still only a Hansard’s throw
from home.
