Vib ra t i ng Mach ineThe f inal step of road construction is leveling the ground to make the passing vehicles and pedestrians move smoothly. A vibration roller is used to make the road surface solid and smooth viathumping.
The invention of the vibration machine not only accelerates the construction pace but also greatly improves working efficiency. With the high-speed impact force generated from vibration while cont inuously working on the ground a smooth road can be realized. The principle of vibration was once applied to forging swords in ancient times. The sword maker would continuously hit the sword to enhance its strength and make it sharper. In our daily life, there are objects that are able to vibrate everywhere, such as cellphones and loudspeakers.
Some major parameters to express vibration include frequency and amplitude. The former one represents the number of vibration per unit time, namely, a higher frequency indicates a faster knocking speed; the
la t te r one means the ex tent of v ibrat ion, that is to say, a larger amplitude may produce a stronger impact force.
The simplest way to produce vibration is to use a vibrating m o to r. T h rough i ns t a l l i ng a centrifugal heavy object on the motor center, vibration may occur due to the shaking motor when it rotates rapidly.

F i t n e s s M a c h i n eSince modern people eat quite well, the rate of obesity increases as years go by, resulting in the emergence of various sports equipment. Most of these equipments are used indoors despite the weather conditions, such that people can do exercises even on a rainy or windy day. Therefore, lots of people get a fitness equipment so they can workout at home without going out.
Spor ts can help people reduce fat and strengthen muscular endurance. But do you know that if a fat person e x e r c i s e s t o g e t h e r w i t h a t h i n one, the fat ter one may burn more calories than the thin person does. For example, a 50 -kg person may burn about 235 k i localor ies whi le a 70-kg person will burn about 330 kilocalories by jogging for 30 minutes.
Quiz:During the spring holiday, Watt had indulged in extravagant eating and drinking, which gained him 2 kg of fat. Therefore, he wanted to spend one month by controlling his diet and exercising for 30-60 minutes to lose weight. According to the doctor’s instructions, the maximum calories allowable to be reduced a day is 500 Kcal, but he has a dinner party with his colleagues on Fridays, so he may gain another 250 Kcal on the party, not to mention the time of exercising. Could you come up with a diet-fitness plan for Watt?

D i g g i n g M a c h i n eWatt who was sitting near the window wa s a t t r ac te d by a s u d d e n s o u n d while he was listening to the teacher attentively. Looking outside, he realized the road near the school was under construction.
The constructors turned up the asphalt roads w i th v ib ra t i on fo rc e f rom an ear th auger, but a high-decibel noise was generated in return, which was t ransmi t ted in the a i r and reached Watt’s ears. Of course, the constructors were the f i rst to be af fected, thus i t may result in severe damage of their hearing ability and make them unable to concentrate due to their long-term exposure in such working conditions.
Generally, people can receive a sound frequency of 20-20kHz, however, the noise frequency generated by an earth auger is within 1-3kHz of which people are quite sensitive to, that’s why Watt got distracted by it; more importantly, the strength of the noise is up to 85 decibels, which may damage our hearing ability, so Watt felt
uncomfortable upon hearing it.
Wat t can’ t he lp th ink ing: “Are there any methods to prevent the workers’ hear ing ability from being damaged in such working conditions? We may create an earth auger to make people unable to perceive i t , or separate the zones to be drilled into vacuum where sound can’t be transmitted.” Watt was pulled backed into reality by the sharp sound made by the teacher when he was deeply absorbed in thinking.

Do you know how sp ide r s move on their webs?
Parts List
17 18
S p i d e r R o b o tAfter watching the movie Spider Man, Watt’s curiosity about spiders was greatly aroused. He was curious about why spider man could move and climb on walls and he was able to capture preys with the f lexible silk coming out of his wrist.
Wat t rea l ized that sp iders were not as simple as what we imagined after referring to some articles from magazines and on the internet. Spiders can be categorized into weaver spiders and wandering spiders. As specified in the literary explanation, weaver spiders are capable of weaving webs while the wandering ones won’t weave but protect themselves by moving around or utilizing the terrains. There was news that some people near ly died from being bit ten by spiders when they were eating bananas.
Although spiders seem to be terrifying for people, most of the spiders can only poison some insects or tiny animals, which won’t hurt us human beings. Therefore, we don’t need to feel scared when seeing them and spiders of ten avoid rather than attract people unless they are provoked.
We can of ten see spider webs in the room corners but seldom see spiders on them, because their targets are the small insects in the room and they wi l l in jec t poisonous sal iva f rom their mouthpar ts once insects are caught in the web to prevent them from f leeing away.

D r a w i n g R o b o t Have you ever seen a piece of action paint?
It is a painting style that appeared in New York in the mid-1940s, thus it is also called New York School o r Abst rac t Express ion, wh ich was quite popular in American or European painting circ les in the 1950s.
Free and bo ld , f u l l o f pass ion and energy, th is pa int ing s t y le represents the Amer ican stand on l iber t y and the bo ldness to
innovate. Dif ferent from traditional ar t appreciation, it focuses on the spirit of excitation and freestyle rather than realism. During the painting, it requires no objects for references and the author could draw whatever he wants. Their works are records of their actions and dynamic processes of their creation. The representative painter, J.Pollock (1912-1956), preferred to nail the canvas on the ground and walk and dance around it with stickers which were dipped in paint, to make the pigments flow randomly.
Do you want to imitate his painting sty le? Please prepare a piece of paper and water color in advance, then spray or drop dif ferent colors on the paper, by wh ich you can create your own work of art by using any method you like (paint brush, hands and feet, branches, etc.) to change the painting style and form.

I c e S k a t e rHave you ever imagined flying freely in the sky like a bird? Have you ever run together with the wind? Do you feel that you can’t experience the feeling since you have no wings or that you run too slowly? All right, here I wi l l introduce to you an amazing object named skating shoes, which enables you to move on the ground like a flying bird or a blowing wind, and even like dancing a ballet.
Skating shoes are of two types: ice skates and roller skates. The former one is mainly used for skating on ice, which has a blade attached to the bottom. When we skate on
ice, the ice surface may melt into water due to the pressure on it, thus we can skate on it easily and freely.
The other type is called roller skate which is applied on land. There are a row of rollers attached to the bottom to help us move forward; this kind of skates are frequently seen in our daily life; especially in the parks where we can see kids skate around happily on their roller skates.
Af ter we to ld you about the ska tes , dea r k i ds , a re you eager to wear it to play in the parks? Don’ t forget to wear your safety cap and protectors, by wh ich you can have fun while ensuring your safety.

M a r s R o v e r Have you ever seen the Mars probe in the movie, Mission to Mars?
Mars is one of the eight planets of our so lar system, rank ing f o u r t h f r o m t h e sun , w h i c h is a lso the p lanet c losest to the ear th other than Venus. Mars has been extraordinarily attractive to us human beings, because i t is a planet whose composition is quite similar to Earth. The inclination between Mars’ equator and ecliptic plane is in close proximity to that of the Earth, thus there are cycles of four seasons on the planet; meanwhile, its rotation period lasts 24 hours and 27 minutes, making a day’s length on Mars almost the same as that on Earth.
The scientists have established a Mars probe to explore whether we can land on Mars, and they believe the planet can be investigated in detail with the probe and they have already obtained lots of data and pictures for analysis. The research has discovered that there were once thick

R o b o V i b r oV i b r a t i o n i s a c o m m o n p h y s i c a l phenomenon. We can fee l the qu ick and slight vibration just by placing our hands on the equipment or household a p p l i a n c e s i n o p e r a t i o n . G e n e r a l l y speaking, v ibrat ion is the side -ef fect caused by the movement of mechanical objects or frictional force. We all expect t o r e d u c e t h e i m p a c t s c a u s e d b y vibration, since vibration is unpredictable and accompanied with noise. Inventors have developed lots of shock-absorbing products, such as shock absorber on vehicle wheels, and shock-absorbing air sole of sports shoes.
Nevertheless, vibration is necessary sometimes and it is often applied in daily life, for example, cellphones in mute mode, massage armchairs and e lec t r i c - dr i ven toothbrushes are a l l products that employ vibration.
Although the naked eyes can’t usually observe if an object is vibrating, it is in a state of motion which is less affected by frictional force and makes the object move. Please t r y to do the fo l lowing expe r iment : p lac e a v ib ra to r on an inc l ined plane, observe i f i t can stay steady owing to the frictional force; then turn on the vibrator and observe whether it will fall down.

Parts List

S p i n n i n g To pThe spinning top is a toy that has an inverse cone shape and can rotate continuously around the center axial. The balance of a top is based on the working principle of a gyroscope, namely, when the top is rotating under force, the sum of the centrifugal forces from all directions achieve the balance, that’s why it can stand on its tip; whereas it will fall down when the driving force disappears.
Consequently, the key to play with a spinning top is to utilize various techniques to produce the driving force for its rotation, including the simplest way of pressing the tip with the hand to advanced ones of throwing the top via a rope or whipping it after it has already rotated. In which the most classical type is the whipping top. First twine the strings around the center axial; then throw it strongly and hold it to produce the rotating force rapidly, by which the top can rotate on the ground.
A traditional top is made of wood, but now plastic or metal have taken its place. Sometimes people often add colorful decorations or sound effects to make it more interesting. But no matter how it evolves, the most enjoyable part of playing with a spinning top lies in the high-speed balance and exciting crash among them.
Next let’s make a top turn round and round with the toy blocks and gyroscope.

B a l a n c e G a m eThe centroid is the center of mass of an object. Due to the different shapes, structure, texture and density of different objects, the centroid is not always in the central point of an object, or not even inside the object, for instance, objects with a shape of a doughnut have their centroid in the center area which is empty.
To locate the centroid, we can string the object above, by which we can get a line vertical to the ground; then hang the object on another

flywheel. Different toy blocks attached on the robot in operation may change its centroid; accordingly, the original balance will be af fected as the centroid changes. More, it can’t remain standing if the displacement of the centroid is too large.
Compete with your fr iend to at tach blocks on it as many as you can, see whose robot won’t fall down with the most blocks attached.

How relaxed and comfor table i t wi l l be to enjoy the beautiful scene and breathe fresh air when you and your family drive along a mountain road; however, it also makes people feel dizzy due to the bumpy road condition, and people may of ten be unable to walk steadily.
It seems to be quite easy for people to walk and we have learned to do so since we were kids. As a matter of fact, it requires many organs in our body to work closely. Human beings keep balance by utilizing the visual sense from the eyes, touch sense from the nerves of the body, sense to accelerate from the vestibule of the inner ear and information integration by the cerebellum to control the action of our muscles to maintain the balance. Taking a walk as an example, to avoid the
unbalance of our body leaning forward, we keep balance through the continuous steps based on the close cooperation of our eyes, nervous system, ears, cerebellum and muscle actions.
As technologies develop constant ly, engineers have real ized the complicated balance system in many types of machinery. Segway is an assistant transportation means for individuals, and people can control the direction and speed through swaying the body when standing on it.
Segway is actually the implementation of the human balance system. The gyro on it helps us sense the leaning direction and angles, just like our eyes, nervous system and vestibule of the inner ear, and its motor works like our muscles, which keeps the Segway balanced based on the correct rotation direction and speed. What’s more, the electric CPU works like our cerebellum does, which processes the data for balance from the gyro, and controls the motor to rotate after precise computation.

G y r o C o m p a s sEver since the ancient times, due to the increased population, climate change and exhaustion of resources, people had to leave their places of residence and journey outside to seek for new habitats full of natural resources and suitable for immigration. With human civilization and curiosity to seek new knowledge, many explorers have stepped boldly to explore the unknown under a condition of insufficient information.
The thing we should concern ourselves most is getting lost in a journey of unknown destinations. Generally, it is not hard to judge the direction since there are many objects on land that can be used as references. For example, heading to a hill in the distance, we can arrive successfully as long as we can see the target although the journey may be tough and difficult. However, in areas such as a desert, ocean, sky or even outer space, it becomes the top priority to be aware of the direction we are heading to.
A compass is designed to solve the problem. Generally, there are two types, one type determines the direction based on the interaction between a magnetic field sensor and the earth magnetic field; the other type works by depending on an exquisite mechanical structure and physical principles. Representatives of the first type of compass include the compass used in ancient times, and the electric compass built in smart phones in modern times. The second type includes the ancient southward pointing cart, as well as the gyro compass model which w i l l be discussed in this lesson. Gyro compass is often applied in large-scale ships. It has the advantages of not being disturbed by the ship’s own magnetic field. Moreover, the direction it points at is the magnetic north pole but not the true north.

G y r o r e c t o rWhen a pilot flies a plane, he should be always quite aware of his direction; taking off or landing and even moving the aircraft leftward or rightward are of great importance. If he lost his sense of direct ion, i t m a y r e s u l t i n r i s k s o f d i so r ienta t i on in f l i gh t , o r eve n c a u s e s eve r e f l i g h t safety crisis once he makes mistakes in taking off or landing.
However, flying in air is different from driving on land where one can determine one’s position and direction using various reference points, for example, landmarks, size of hills in the distance can all help us determine the direction easily. However, when the plane rises up to a certain degree, it is all white outside the cockpit, so it is not easy to find reference points.
A gyro horizon is a device designed for solving the problem. Usually, its round display board is divided into two parts, with the upper part colored in blue to represent the sky and the bottom part in deep color to indicate the horizon line. There are two horizontal lines referring to the aerofoil in the middle part of the display board; a small point between the two lines represents the plane nose.
Based on the inertia of a gyro, the small point in blue part indicates that the plane is rising; conversely, i t means the plane is landing i f the point is below the horizon line. Moreover, the clockwise and counterclockwise rotation indicates i f the plane is f ly ing lef tward and rightward respectively.

F l i g h t S i m u l a t o rThe Wright brothers f inished their f irst controlled powered f l ight by ut i l iz ing the f ixed-wing aircraf t, making a great step for aircraf t engineering, thus they are regarded as the inventors of the modern plane. At that time, they believed that the key i tems to be so lved included designs for the motors and the wings, as well as how to control the plane.
To maintain the plane’s balance, they observed how birds f lew, and found birds to change the angle of the ends of their wings to make their bodies roll right or left. Therefore, they designed the plane wing to be able to tilt toward the inside of the turning directions just like the birds did.
According to the initial concept, a pilot shall lay on the wings of the lower layer to reduce the air resistance during the f lying. Once the landing process is completed, a pilot has to hold the plane body tightly and suspend himself in the air at the opening preserved at the bottom
wing so as to land. Af ter numerous experiments, the pilots improved their landing into position with the head of the plane forward.
Therefore, does i t sound that the trial flights are quite d a n g e r o u s a n d c a n ’ t b e fallible?

R o b o G y r oThe bas ic s t ruc ture o f a gy ro cons is ts o f a f lywheel of high-speed revolution. According to the principle of momentum conservation, a strong inertia may emerge in the gyro when the fly wheel rotates at a high speed to prevent the external force from changing its direction of the gyro.
The inertia varies with the following variables: - A larger mass of flywheel leads to larger inertia;- A larger rotation diameter of the flywheel leads to larger inertia;- A larger rotating speed of the flywheel leads to larger inertia.
To make the iner t ia large enough, we have to supply ex t remely high rotat ing speed for the f lywheel under the premise of the f ixed shape and mass of a flywheel. In the gyro motor in this teaching material, we utilized a battery to supply
enough rotation speed to achieve the purpose. This works in the same principle like when we twined the top with long string and pull forcefully, in order to provide a higher initial rotation speed to maintain the inertia, by which we can prolong the time of balance.
In the gyro robot we designed, when it is going to lean toward one direct ion due to gravity, the iner tia generated by high-speed rotating flywheel will make it lean to the opposite direction to realize balance. Therefore, the designed robot can not only walk steadily on the plane but also keep balance on a t ight str ing without fal l ing down.
