Fr. Carl’s Little Reservoir: August 31, 2014
On my office desk sits an old photo (c. 1960) of my father sitting at a typewriter at his office desk, smoking a pipe and wearing
his “newspaper man’s” hat. He was the editor of two weekly, small town newspapers, The Gallatin Democrat and The Ridgway News, and took great pride in covering all the local news with accuracy and objectivity. He put his heart and soul into his work, and I don’t think he could ever have imagined himself doing anything else. As a young boy, I enjoyed the occasional times my father would take me to work with him, especially when he would be covering the games of the local sports teams. I especially enjoyed when we’d go back to the newspaper office after a game, and he’d let me go with him into the “dark room” and watch him develop all the photos he’d taken, explaining to me how this “magical” chemical process worked. Through the years, I’ve grown to appreciate more and more how talented people are at the work they do, and how hard they work, whether they’re a teacher, nurse, carpenter, mechanic, secretary, physician, pilot, chef, musician, police officer, photographer, florist, or whatever. As the old joke goes, “I can stand for hours and watch other people work!” As we observe another Labor Day weekend, please know how much I admire and appreciate the work that you do. Whatever it may be, and whether you do it for pay or as a volunteer, take pride in the work that you do, and know that by the work you do, you are making yourself a better person, and our world a better place. Remember, the work we do is the rent we pay for the space we occupy. Happy Labor Day!--Fr. Carl
