12/2/2014 Evaluating Algebraic Expressions VOCABULARY
VARIABLE – A variable is a letter or symbol used in place of unknown numbers or quantities in expressions and equations. For example, in the expression x + 5, x is the variable.
COEFFICIENT – A coefficient is a number that multiplies a variable. For example, 5 is the coefficient of 5x

ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSION – An algebraic expression is a mathematical phase that uses numbers, variables, or both with operations. For example x + 5 or 5x.
TERM – A term is part of an expression containing a number, a variable, or both. Terms are separated in an expression by addition and subtraction symbols.
In the expression 2a + 3, there are two termsThe terms are 2a and 3
12/2/2014 Evaluating Algebraic Expressions MATH TIP
You cannot solve an expression. You evaluate it for a specific value by substituting that value for the variable and simplifying.
When evaluating an expression, use the order of operations. First, do the operations inside grouping symbols. Then evaluate expressions with exponents, Next, do multiplication and division from left to right. Finally, do addition and subtraction from left to right.
