New Zealand faces more serious UV pollutions problems

then most other countries because we are closer to Ant-

arctic ozone hole, where the Ozone l ayer of atmosphere is

thinner. This causes increased UV level in New Zealand. The increased UV level can cause serious health problems

such as skin cancer, damage to human eye and immune

system. On the other hand, UV is not always harmful to

people, it also helps to make Vitamin D in the human body,as well it there are a range of medical applications that use

    UV light.

My proposal is a hotel building with a sun spa, restaurant,

and 60 rooms with target guests coming from the near

by hospital, university and sports faculties. The building

is located in the heart of the CCDUs proposed HealthPrecinct.

The design concept of the project is basing on mitigating

levels of UV light as it enters the interior space. Throughmy investigation a number of different surfaces, volumes

have been analyzing; each geometry is subdivided in to

8x8m units, and the UV levels for all units are recorded.Following my intial studies I choose the form that had thelowest UV levels. In the second stage I further developed

the form to incorporate the site and program, and in some

instances I allowed for high levels of UV light but in mostcases I adjusted the form to have the lowest UV exposure.

The hotel is made out of two main materials, curtain wall

with ultraviolet light absorbers coating achieving highquality natural day lighting. For the sun spa the facade is

made of radiation controlled polycarbonate. Pragmatically,

the programs of the hotel have been tted with relationship

to the UV level of each area. For example the bedroomsare all located where there is better natural lighting but

with low UV exposure, while the sun spa is over the cor-

    ners with high UV levels.

Ultraviolet (UV) light is electromagnetic radiation with a wavelength shorter than that of visible light, but longer than X-

    rays

UV light is found in sunlight and is emitted by electric arcs and specialized lights such as black lights Most ultraviolet is classied as non-ionizing radiation

My research is about ultraviolet, the relationship between Ozone and UV, the Christchurch UV levels. Also

the health-related effects of UV radiation, few equations in related to ultraviolet

Ultraviolet (UV) light is electromagnetic radiation with a wavelength shorter than that of visible light, butlonger than X-rays, that is, in the range 10 nm to 400 nm, corresponding to photon energies from 3 eV to

124 eV. It is so-named because the spectrum consists of electromagnetic waves with frequencies higherthan those that humans identify as the colour violet. These frequencies are invisible to humans, but visibleto a number of insects and birds. They are also indirectly visible, by causing uorescent materials to glowwith visible light.

The UV Index is a measure of the intensity of UV radiation. The larger the number, the more intense the UV. InNew Zealand, its maximum summer value is generally about 12, but it can exceed 13 in the far North. In winter it

reaches peak values of 1 or 2. Values of 10 or more should be considered as extreme. At high altitude tropical

sites (eg Mauna Loa Observatory, Hawaii), the UV Index can exceed 20.

    icd UV v

New Zealands location in the remote southern Pacic and Southern oceans and its low population density mean it

has an exceptionally cleanatmosphere over most of the country. For example, New Zealand has little of the par-ticulates and shorter-lived industrial gases that affect heavily industrialised countries in the northern hemisphere.

Our latitude and clarity of atmosphere mean that high levels of radiation from the sun reach the ground relatively

unhindered. This results in higher levels of UV radiation at ground level in New Zealand than in other developed

countries. Ozone depletion further exacerbates this effect, resulting in increased intensity of the UV r adiation thatcauses sunburn.

The environmental and health impacts of raised levels of UV can be severe, particularly for New Zealand where

high levels of UV are already experienced. The impacts include increases in the rates of skin cancers and eye

cataracts. Raised levels of UV also suppress human and animal immune systems. Plants can also be affected. Forexample, high UV levels reduce the growth of plankton, a critical building block of the marine food chain. Increased

exposure to UV damages some man-made materials such as paints, plastics and construction materials.

With the research, it is clear that the larger angle between UV and glass, the more amount of UV would be

reected(Fresnel equations). In the investigation, a series of studying on relationship bewteen UV levels and different types of surfaceshave been carried out. By analysis the angles between the points on surface to sun, the colours been ap-plied to surface indicate different UV level.Through my investigation a number of different surfaces, vol-

umes have been analyzing; each geometry is subdivided in to 8x8 units, and the UV levels for all units arerecorded.

and professional partners, educational and medi-hotel facilities will bewithin walking distance of the main hospital site. It willalso form a world-class facility for learning and teaching in medicinelocated at the western end of the south Frame, the precinct will be well

connected to the Metro Sports Facility and the Core.

The proposed Health Precinct would include: Allied health partnerships between industry and clinicians
