ORGAN VOLUNTARY: Prelude in E flat "St Anne" BWV 552 - J.S. Bach PRAYER: The Congregation will be invited to stand for our ‘gathering prayer’ INTROIT: The Call – R Vaughan Williams

WELCOME & CALL TO WORSHIP

HYMN: CH3 352

1. Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty! Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee; Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty, God in Three Persons, blessèd Trinity! 2. Holy, holy, holy! all the saints adore thee, Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea, Cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee, Which wert, and art, and evermore shalt be. 3. Holy, holy, holy! though the darkness hide thee, Though the eye of sinful man thy glory may not see, Only thou art holy; there is none beside thee, Perfect in power, in love, and purity. Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! All thy works shall praise thy Name in earth and sky and sea; Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty, God in Three Persons, blessed Trinity! Amen CALL TO PRAYER & LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Lessons are read by Ian Black & Brandon Williams

FIRST READING: Isaiah 50:4 - 9

PSALM:19

SECOND READING: Mark 8:27 - end

THE APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth: and in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

HYMN: CH3 478

1. Soldiers of the cross, arise! Gird you with your armour bright; Mighty are your enemies, Hard the battle ye must fight. 2. O’er a faithless fallen world Raise your banner in the sky; Let it float there wide unfurled; Bear it onward; lift it high. 3. ‘Mid the homes of want and woe, Strangers to the living word, Let the Saviour’s herald go, Let the voice of hope be heard.

4. Where the shadows deepest lie, Carry truth’s unsullied ray; Where are crimes of blackest dye, There the saving sign display. 5. To the weary and the worn Tell of realms where sorrows cease; To the outcast and forlorn Speak of mercy and of peace. 6. Guard the helpless; seek the

strayed; Comfort troubles; banish grief; In the might of God arrayed, Scatter sin and unbelief.

7. Be the banner still unfurled, Still unsheathed the Spirit's sword, Till the kingdoms of the world Are the Kingdom of the Lord.

PRAYER OF GRATITUDE AND CONCERN ANTHEM: Gerne will ich mich bequemen (Matthew Passion) – J S Bach HYMN: CH3 577

1. Let all mortal flesh keep silence, And with fear and trembling stand; Ponder nothing earthly-minded, For with blessing in his hand, Christ our God to earth descendeth, Our full homage to demand. 2. King of kings, yet born of Mary, As of old on earth he stood, Lord of lords, in human vesture - In the body and the blood - He will give to all the faithful His own self for heavenly food.

3. Rank on rank the host of heaven Spreads its vanguard on the way, As the Light of light descendeth From the realms of endless day, That the powers of hell may vanish As the darkness clears away. 4. At his feet the six-winged Seraph, Cherubim, with sleepless eye, Veil their faces to the Presence, As with ceaseless voice they cry: ‘Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Lord Most High!’

SERMON OFFERTORY DOXOLOGY, DEDICATION OF THE OFFERING & CHORAL AMEN

Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise him, all creatures here below; Praise him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost.

HYMN: CH4 458 (Tune Camberwell)

1. At the name of Jesus every knee shall bow, every tongue confess him King of glory now; 'tis the Father's pleasure we should call him Lord, who from the beginning was the mighty Word: 2. Brothers, sisters, name him, with love strong as death, but with awe and wonder and with bated breath! He is God the Saviour, he is Christ the Lord, ever to be worshipped, trusted, and adored.

3. In your hearts enthrone him; there let him subdue all that is not holy, all that is not true: let his grace support you in temptation's hour; and his will enfold you in its light and power. 4. In his Father’s glory Christ shall come again, angel hosts proclaiming his return to reign. For all wreaths of empire meet upon his brow, and our hearts confess him King of glory now.

EDINBURGH QUARTET& ROSS MONTGOMERYAutumn is a time of mixed emotions: the fierybeauty of red and ochre trees belies thefading life in their branches, while bountifulharvests give way to the bleakness of winter. In the wake of the pandemic, our first GCFconcert in two years echoes this duality—bothin timing, and in emotion. Reflecting on theseopposing sentiments, Scottish clarinettist RossMontgomery joins the world-renowned EdinburghQuartet for this poignant yet uplifting performance.

Prayer for Being Grateful

Father, I am so sorry for the way I complain about my circumstances. Please forgive me for my bad attitude when things don't go my way. I want to see Your hand in every part of everyday - good or bad. Help me learn how to face every storm with confidence, knowing that You really are in control even though I cannot hear Your voice or see Your hand at work. In Jesus Name, Amen. ~ Mary Southerland
