With less than three months left in the service year, now is the time to peddle through all of
your school work, your other activites, but most importantly your Key Club work. As Key
Club Presidents and Vice Presidents, this time of year is where your duties as club CEOs
really swing into action. Of course, youre still required to perform all that is asked of you
(check out your signed service agreement from the beginning of the service year), but now is
really the time to publicize and to get your clubs energized and motivated for this years Dis-
trict Convention: Walk the Boardwalk of Service.
As Im sure youve heard, District Convention, or DCON, is at a new location this year heck, its in an entire-
ly different state! Moving all the way from Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, New Jersey Key Clubs Convention this
year will be held at the Ocean Place Resort & Spa on the beautiful shore of Long Branch, New Jersey from
March 30th-April 1st. You must work with your advisor(s) to prepare for what will be what were expecting is
one of the craziest conventions yet. Convention registration materials including the Registration Packet, the
Elections Packet, the Contests Packet, the Scholarships Packet, and more, has been released and can be simply
found online at dcon.njkeyclub.org, or as always, contact your Lieutenant Governor for more information.
In addition to District Convention registration, dont forget about club elections! Even
though our school year runs September-June, our Key Club year runs from April-April!
Begin to hold club elections before District Convention, that way your newly elected
officers will be ready and prepared to take on their new Key Club positions after attend-
ing their respective officer workshops and meeting their counterparts from all over the
district.
Please continue to check all the content the New Jersey District Board sends to you in your emails and frequent-
ly visit njkeyclub.org for possible updates. I am always available to those who ask for help, so please dont feel
shy in contacting me!
Yours in Caring, Service, and Friendship,

In case you haven't noticed, the days are getting longer (at least the weeks feel longer). Well,
think of it as mother nature telling us to sleep a little less and live a little more. For Secretaries, this means really bringing the entire Service Year together. To help you out with this seemingly
lofty task, here are some general tips.

Club Monthly Report Forms Distinguished Secretary Award
Club Annual Achievement RFs Club Member Hours
Its a final push for club monthly report forms! There are
only a few months left, which in turn, means a few
months of reporting left! Remember to submit your ClubMonthly Report Forms (CMRFs) by the tenth of every
month. Your CMRFs should be sent to your lieutenant
governor, your zone administrator, your Kiwanis advisor,
your faculty advisor, and your District Secretary (me!). In
filling out these report forms, please make sure you are as
detailed and accurate as possible. That way, the District
may highlight the successes of a club or lieutenant gover-
nor and set an example for the District to follow. For
your convenience, you may use the e-CMRF generator at
njkeyclub.org.
As the Service Year is drawing to a close and the prepara-
tion for the biggest celebration of the year gets underway
(DCON!) it is also time to recognize those of you how havegone above and beyond what has been required of you. As
Secretaries, some of your duties included the following:
Attendance at officer and club meetings
Submit minutes and Club Monthly Report Forms on a
timely basis
Record the hours or points of every Key Club member
Organize Service Projects and collect sign-in sheets
from committee heads
These Secretaries will be honored at the 66th annual
DCON by the NJ District Board and by their fellow Key
Clubbers. Ask your LTG for more information!
As the year winds down and your clubs finishes up
your big projects, remember to start working with your
President and advisor on the Annual Achievement RF
which can be found at http://tinyurl.com/annual-
achievement. This form is mandatory for all Key
Clubs. Make sure to collect all your CMRFs from every
month of the Service Year to help you out with Part 2
which calls for a list of the top 50 Service Projects your
club has done this past year.
Be sure to regularly update the club member hours. As
the school year nears and end, Key Clubbers may want
to know how many hours or points they have accumu-
lated throughout the year. So, be sure to keep your
spreadsheet neat and your sign-ins in one binder so
you can cross reference the original copies if you have
made a mistake in recording. At the end of the year,
send a copy of the Key Club members who have ful-
filled the service requirements to the Guidance Office.

To the treasurers that have successfully collected all club dues, congratulations! I am in-credibly excited that we are joining our efforts to move this district forward. As a paid
club, your members are eligible to attend District Convention, vote in elections, and apply
for divisional as well as international awards and scholarships. The service year is fast ap-
proaching an end, and as it does so, it is important to keep in mind a few crucial things.
If your club has yet to pay dues, you are currently marked under
delinquent status. What does that mean? Dues are absolutely necessary in order for the
club to not lose the charter, and when it assumes a delinquent status, it means that it cannot
participate in any of the activities stipulated above. The Dues Process is very simple. If you oryour advisor is struggling with using an H-number, a password, or general directions please
contact me or your clubs Lieutenant Governor. Not only are directions in newsletters and
district publications, but we are also here as tools to guide you through this vital portion of
existing as a club.
Switching gears, I am sure many of you are just as excited as I am for District Convention. It is a terrific celebra-
tion of not only your clubs accomplishments, but also one that marks the progress of the district as a whole.
This year, we are bringing convention back to New Jersey, which means that district pride should be at an all
time high! I must admit that this amazing experience comes with a high cost. This year, convention costs $260
for Key Clubbers and $285 for chaperones. This cost includes meals, rooming, and admittance to the conven-
tion. If your club is looking to subsidize the cost for your members, here are a few ideas on how to fundraise or
lower that price tag.
Can shake. This idea, although simple, is a big earner. Contact a local grocery store or heavy traffic coffee
shop and gain permission to hold a can shake for the cost of convention. You will more than likely need a
letter from your advisor with your intentions clearly outlined!
Sell candy/chocolate. Self-explanatory. You can buy candy in bulk from places like Costco and sell them to
others.
Contact your sponsoring Kiwanis Club. Take the initiative and contact your Kiwanis Club. They want tohelp you learn more and expand your Key Club experience. One way they may be able to help is complete
or partial sponsorship for convention.

KEY CLUB CONTESTSBy Chairperson Jiayun Fang
My favorite part of any boardwalk is always the gamesthe wacky, seemingly-easy-but-really-hard games.
Well, at the Boardwalk of Service at DCON 2012, the games are much more different. Labeled contests, they
serve to honor and celebrate the wonderful Service Year we have finished and move us toward the next one.
First and foremost, even if your club is not entering any contests this year or not going to DCON, you arestill required to fill out the Annual Achievement Report Form. It is mandatory for every existing club to fill out.
Every club who is entering at least one contest must hand it in or all other entries for contests will be voided.
Now onto the contests: some contests are judged well in ad-
vance and do not require any submission forms. These include Trick
or Treat for UNICEF, District Project, Distinguished Officers, Big 10
Award, and the Early Bird Dues award. On the other hand, some con-
tests such as Club Website Award, Single Service Award, Club Bulletin
Award, Kiwanis Family Relations Award, Major Emphasis Project, and
Annual Achievement (see above) are all decided before hand. Awards
of appreciation such as Dr. Andrew Batsis Outstanding Kiwanis Club
Sponsorship Robert J. Mascenik Outstanding Kiwanis AdvisorDominico Gatti Faculty Advisor Award are due on Feb 24th Lastly, there are contests to be decided at DCON
such as Traditional and Nontraditional Scrapbook, Impromptu Essay, Oratorical, Digital and Drawn Poster, Club
Video, and Talent competitions. Early preparation and timely submissions are the keys to winning any contest.
Please do not hesitate to contact me Jiayun Fang (Contests Chairperson) at [email protected] if you have
any questions at all. Good luck!

DISTRICT PROGRAMS: aDVOCACYBy District Project Co-Chairperson Celina Baquiran
It is already close to the end of the service year,
but that does not mean you should forget about
our advocacy focuses just yet! Although the ad-
vocacy focus changes each year, I encourage that
all clubs try their best to strive for an advocacy
service project. At District Convention this year,
the NJ District of Key Club International will be working with Better World Books in which book donations willbe sent to those who need them in Uganda, with the help of Invisible Children. It is not too late to host an In-
visible Children screening at your school, so contact your school administration and Invisible Children for more
information on how to host a screening. Since Autism is such a broad focus, clubs are more than welcome to
pick which aspect of Autism they want to focus on. Whether it is having a day of silence, participating in autism
recreational therapy, or personally working with autism organizations, do your part in advocating for autism. In-
visible Children and autism will only be our advocacy focuses for so long, so do not miss your chance to speak
for them! Contact your Lieutenant Governor if you have any other questions about advocacy.

Youve probably heard of all the great aspects of 2012 District Convention already:
the new location right in New Jersey, the scenic beach view, and the informative workshops
awaiting you. Perhaps youve even heard about the two dances: the Friday night neon-
themed dance, and the Saturday night formal dance. With all these great events planned,
this weekend, from March 30th April 1st at the Ocean Place Resort & Spa is sure to be en-
joyable. Now, the question is: how do you sign up to join the New Jersey District Board in
walking the boardwalk of service?
To make your registration process run as smoothly as possible, first obtain permission, if needed, from yourschool principal, administration, or Board of Education. Since they need a certain amount of time to approve
the trip, its best to start as early as possible (AKA now). Also, find a plan to help all members pay for the trip.
See if your club is able to subsidize a portion of the costs; you can even ask the sponsoring Kiwanis for help.
Convention this year costs $260 for Key Clubbers, $285 for chaperones (double occupancy room), and $340
for chaperones (single occupancy room). If your club registers prior to Friday, February 10th, 2012, you may
deduct $5 per person.
Also, chaperones are mandatory for this trip, and each club must have a chaperone for every ten members.
Clubs may share chaperones between them. Another important point is to plan your transportation now, espe-
cially if you plan on using a school bus or a bus from an outside source. Contact your Lieutenant Governor to
see if you can share a bus with a nearby school.
As for all the paperwork, the registration packet can be downloaded off the New Jersey District Website at
http://dcon.njkeyclub.org/Walking_the_Boardwalk_of_Service/ . Dont register online. You must mail Regis-
tration Form and Convention Sign-up form with a check or money order to Mr. Anthony Affatati at 191 Ein-
stein Way, Cranbury, NJ 08512. Please send a non-refundable check or money order (no cash) made payable to
New Jersey District of Key Club. The Parental Consent Form and Medical Questionnaire and EmergencyMedical Treatment Authorization Form should not be mailed, and instead, should be turned in at the Conven-
tion Registration Desk upon arrival. All registration forms must be postmarked byWednesday, February 29th,
2012. Early registration is Friday, February 10th, 2012.
If you have any questions, please contact your Lieutenant Governor or email me at audreyltg-
[email protected]. I hope to see you at District Convention!

Why run for executive/international office? Are you one of those enthusiastic Key Clubbers screaming for service? Let your
leadership skills shine and create a greater impact by serving in a higher position. Running
for an executive or international position is a great idea. From speeches to campaigning to
hours of caucusing, you begin to gain personal confidence. Once elected, you meet some
phenomenal people and experience service in a larger scale through the NJ District and Key
Club International. You will have the unique opportunity to lead a larger group of people and assist Key Club-
bers to effectively serve our homes, schools, and communities.
Executive or International positions require serious commitment. You must prepare for the duties youwill soon be responsible for. So be sure to decide whether or not you will be able to handle it and which posi-
tion suits you the most if you do chose to run.
What positions can you run for?As an underclassman, there are many positions that you can run for. However, the expectations and
duties of each of these positions are very different from one another. The District Editor helps the New Jersey
District by compiling the district wide bulletin - the Jersey Key. The District Treasurer works to ensure 100%
collection of dues from all clubs within the District. He or she handles all invoices, vouchers, and committee
work as well. The District Secretary is responsible of publishing the District Handbook, detailed minutes for
each board meeting, and 10 newsletters to the District Board. He or she is also in charge of all District Mail-
ings, KEYping up, and recording all reports. The District Governor practically runs the entire New Jersey Dis-
trict. He or she has the duty of presiding over District Board meetings and must remain in contact with the en-
tire District Board, Kiwanis Committee, and International Trustee. Other than completing these specific du-
ties, all executive or international board members must act as responsible role models to Key Clubbers and be
ready to take on any other responsibilities if needed.
How do you run for an executive/international position? If you are sure about running for an executive position or for endorsement for an international position
please fill out page 15 in the official 2012-2013 Election Packet. You will then attend the Mid-Winter Training
Conference from March 2-4 to learn about the process of elections and then you will campaign throughout Dis-
trict Convention 2012 from March 30-April 1 at the Ocean Place Resort and Spa in Long Branch, NJ.

FUNDRAISING FOR DISTRICT PROJ.By Co-Chairperson Nicole Ventrone
Attention all Key Clubbers: DCON is only two months away! The New Jersey District now has limited time to reach
our fundraising goal of $79, 180.38. Though all of our clubs have been hard at work these past few months, the time has
come for us all to fundraise like we never have before! There are so many options for friends, fun, and fundraising to all
come together, so why not begin planning such an event right now! Check out these few simple steps guaranteed to bring in
the big bucks for the Eliminate Project.
Step 1: Top priority is setting a fundraising goal. Ask yourself how
much you hope to raise for the Eliminate Project in order to deter-
mine what type of an event would work best for you.
Step 2: Focus on getting a group of dedicated, reliable people to be-
come your committee. More people mean more ideas, but be cau-
tious of a committee thats too big. Too many opinions can some-
times lead to conflict.
Step 3: Choose an event that you think will be popular in your com-
munity. Anything from a movie night to a powderpuff football game
is feasible!Step 4:Find an event space, date and time that works in the committees schedule. Youll need all hands on deck!
Step 5: Prepare everything you need for the event! Begin buying supplies, organizing which committee members will be in
charge of which aspects of the fundraiser (i.e. food, tickets, etc.), and publicizing to the best of your abilities!
Step 6:Host the event that youve successfully planned and enjoy yourself while youre at it!
Step 7: Finally, send the donations over to Kiwanis International! If you follow these quick and easy steps, you and your
club will have an event that you are not only be proud of but a fundraiser that benefited the Eliminate Project!
