11th Annual principled leadership symposium

Celebrating 175 years of principled leadership

Welcome to The Citadel and our 11th Annual Principled Leadership Symposium. Over the next two days, you will hear from a variety of distinguished speakers and panelists on our theme: 175 Years of Principled Leadership.

This year’s symposium culminates a major milestone in Citadel history – the founding of The Citadel. Since 1842, The Citadel has produced distinguished alumni for military service, the academy, business, medicine and politics. Citadel graduates have excelled in every endeavor, and led in our communities at the local, state and national level.

There is much to celebrate and participate in during the symposium. Panels and discussions on student scholarship and achievement in student research, internships, international education, service learning and civic engagement are at the heart of the symposium, along with project poster presentations and other hands-on activities. On Friday, Citadel cadets, along with

evening undergraduate and graduate students, will share their perspectives on research and experiential learning activities. Editors of our literary magazine The Gold Star Journal will examine the cross-disciplinary papers from this year’s volume. You can also join a walking tour of historic Hampton Park or participate in an ancient Greek battle demonstration – complete with spears and shields – on Summerall Field, at the center of campus. I also call your attention to a presentation by members of the Class of 1971 remembering their classmate Joe Shine, the second African-American graduate of The Citadel. Joe’s classmatesdiscuss the challenge of being cadets during the turbulent era of racial desegregation. It’s a powerful examination of The Citadel’s complex history.

We are delighted you are here to participate in our special anniversary celebration and hope you take time to enjoy all Charleston offers. Thank you for attendi 11th Annual Principled Leadership Symposium.Sincerely,

MR. SEAN NAYLOR is the author of Relentless Strike: The Secret History of Joint Special Operations Command and Not a Good Day to Die: The Untold Story of

Operation Anaconda, both of which were New York Times bestsellers. Sean was a reporter for Army Times (1990 to 2013), covering special operations forces,

combat operations, exercises, training, readiness, force modernization and the Army’s senior leadership. He spent time as an embedded reporter in Somalia, Haiti, Bosnia, Albania, Macedonia, Kosovo, Afghanistan and Iraq. He was the intelligence and counterterrorism correspondent for Foreign Policy from January to August 2015. Since 2014, he has also been a contributing reporter for the New York Times, including work on an

in-depth investigation of SEAL Team 6 that won the 2015 George Polk award for military reporting. He is now a contributing writer for Newsweek.

Sean received his bachelor’s degree in journalism from Boston University in 1988 and a Master of Arts in international relations from the same institution in 1990.

Born in Canada, and raised in England and Ireland, Sean became a U.S. citizen in 2000.

COL RANDY JAMES “KOMRADE” BRESNIK Randy “Komrade” Bresnik is a NASA astronaut and a former U.S. Marine Corps Colonel. He was born in Ft. Knox, Kentucky, but considers Santa Monica, California, where he graduated from high school, to be his hometown. Bresnik received a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics from The Citadel in 1989. A U.S. Marine Corps scholarship recipient, he was a Dean’s List and Gold Star student, and received several Citadel and President’s scholarships. He graduated in 1989, and was commissioned as an officer into the Marine Corps. While a Marine, Bresnik earned a Master of Science in Aviation Systems from the University of Tennessee in 2002, and graduated from the Air War College in 2008. In May of 2004, Bresnik was among the elite few to be selected out of approximately 4,000 applicants to become one of the 11 members of NASA’s Astronaut Class 9. He completed his astronaut candidate training in February 2006, becoming the first graduate of The Citadel to fly in space. His first space flight was aboard the Space Shuttle on STS-129. He has also trained as a Cave-a-naut with the European Space Agency to test living deep beneath the Earth’s surface as well as an Aquanaut for NASA’s Extreme Environment Mission Operation (NEEMO) 19. Bresnik most recently served as the Commander of the International Space Station for Expedition 53 and as Flight Engineer for Expedition 52.

LTG MIKE STEELE graduated from The Citadel in 1967. He served in numerous operational commands throughout his career. He served as

Commanding General of the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, and led the Division during Operation Uphold Democracy, which toppled Haiti’s military

regime in 1994. Beginning in 1996, he served as Commanding General, U. S. Army Pacific. His final assignment was Commanding General, U. S. Army Combined Arms Center. Following retirement in 2001, he served in the domestic and international defense industry, leading programs for leader development, military training, and advanced technology weapon systems. He is a past Chairman of The Citadel BOV and currently serves

on The Citadel Foundation Board of Directors. He and his wife Pam live on Seabrook Island, SC.
