INTRODUCTION
This manual has been prepared to serve as a guide to SouthernRailway personnel engaged in the operation and maintenance ofSouthern owned diesel-electric locomotives.
The contents are divided into three sections as follows:
1. General Information - Provides terms and functionalpurpose of various locomotive components, circuit flowdiagrams, and standard methods of cutting out dynamicbrakes.
2. Locomotive Information - Provides flow diagrams forpower and direction control on basic road power withinSouthern's fleet. Component location charts.
3. Parts Price List - Provides individual price breakdownon various externally mounted components to enablebetter estimates of wreck damage.

The data appearing in this manual is intended as a guide andas an aid in troubleshooting Southern owned road locomotives.
The material included is applicable to basic locomotive powerand direction control circuits. Should you encounter problemsin other circuits of the locomotives such as dynamic brakes, wheelslip, etc., consult specific prints and/or drawings in order tocorrect malfunction.
NOTE: Under no circumstances are Southern Railwaypersonnel authorized to attempt rewiring of alocomotive using the information containedherein. In the event rewiring is necessaryonly specifically authorized locomotiveschematics will be used.

ANNUNCIATOR MODULE:
VARIOUS FAULT SIGNALS FROM THE 15 VDC CONTROL MODULES ARE PROVIOED TO THEANNUNCIATOR MODULE AN102. THESE FAULT SIGNALS RESULT IN TURN ON OF FAULTINDICATING LIGHTS LOCATED ON THE MODULE FACEPLATE. THE AN102 MODULE HASPROVISIONS FOR SIX SEPARATE FAULT INDICATIONS. CLEARING THE FAULT WILLNOT RESET THE FAULT INDICATING LIGHTS. THE FAULT INDICATING LIGHTS REMAINON UNTIL THE MODULE IS RESET OR THE 15 VDC INPUT TO THE MODULE IS INTERRUPTED.
CURRENT I~AXIMIZING MODULE:
THE CURRENT MAXIMIZING MODULE CM100 MONITORS AVERAGE MOTOR CURRENT150A/V AT RECEPTACLE 8 AND CHANGES THE OUTPUT RESISTANCE BETWEEN RECEPTACLES 5 AND 6. THIS MAY BE EITHER AN INCREASE OR A DECREASE IN RESISTANCE.IF THIS CHANGE RESULTS IN AN INCREASE OF AVERAGE MOTOR CURRENT, ANOTHER CHANGEIN RESISTANCE WILL BE MADE IN THE SAME DIRECTION. IF THE CHANGE RESULTS INA DECREASE OR NO CHANGE OF AVERAGE MOTOR CURRENT. A CHANGE IN RESISTANCEWILL BE MADE IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION. A CHANGE IN RESISTANCE IS MADEABOUT ONCE EACH SECOND. THEREFORE, RESISTANCE CHANGES ARE MADE AS NECES-SARY TO MAINTAIN OPERATION AT OR NEAR THE PEAK OF THE FRICTION CREEP CURVE.
DYNAMIC BRAKE REGULATOR MODULE:
THE DYNAMIC BRAKE REGULATOR MODULE DR100 MONITORS THE DYNAMIC BRAKING SIGNALFROM THE DYNAMIC BRAKE RHEOSTAT (24T SIGNAL) WHICH IS ESTABLISHED BY BRAKEHANDLE POSITION. THIS SIGNAL IS CONVERTED INTO A TRACTION flOTOR FIELDCURRENT REFERENCE SIGNAL ON UNITS EQUIPPED FOR FIELO CURRENT TRAINLINECONTROL (FCTLC) AND INTO A TRACTION MOTOR ARMATURE CURRENT (GRID CURRENT)REFERENCE SIGNAL ON UNITS EQUIPPED FOR GRID CURRENT TRAINLINE CONTROL(GCTLC).
OYNAMIC BRAKE PROTECTION MODULE:
THE DP100 MODULE PROVIOES OYNAMIC BRAKE PROTECTIVE FUNCTIONS OF GRID OVERCURRENT, GRID OVER-EXCITATION, ANO GRID OPEN-CIRCUIT. THE GRID OVER-CURRENTFUNCTION RECEIVES A SIGNAL PROPORTIONAL TO DYNAIHC BRAKE GRID CURRENT ANOINTERRUPTS THE FEED TO THE EQP RELAY WHEN THE LIMITING VALUE OF ABOUT 820AMPERES IS REACHED. THIS FUNCTION PROVIDES BACK-UP PROTECTION IN CASE THEDR MODULE FAILS TO REGULATE GRID CURRENT.
EXTENDED RANGE DYNAI'I! C BRAKE MODULE:
WHEN OPERATING IN DYNAMIC BRAKE AT PEAK BRAKING EFFORT SPEEO. TRACTIONMOTOR FIELD CURRENT IS APPROXIMATELY 875 AMPERES AND TRACTION MOTORARMATURE CURRENT (DYNAMIC BRAKING GRIO CURRENT) IS APPROXIMATELY 760AMPERES. AT TRACK SPEEDS ABOVE PEAK BRAKING EFFORT SPEED. THE DR100MODULE REGULATES TRACTION MOTOR FIELD CURRENT AS NECESSARY TO LIMITBRAKING EFFORT SPEED. THE DR100 MODULE REGULATES TRACTION MOTOR FIELDCURRENT AS NECESSARY TO LIMIT BRAKING GRID CURRENT TO APPROXIf~TELY 760AMPERES. AT TRACK SPEEDS BELOW PEAK BRAKING EFFORT SPEED. TRACTION MOTOR

FIELD CURRENT IS LIMITED TO ABOUT 875 AMPERES AND DYNAMIC BRAKING GRIDCURRENT DECREASES AS TRACK SPEED DECREASES. THE DE100 MODULE MONITORS THE TRACTION MOTOR FIELD CURRENT SIGNAL AND THEBRAKING GRID CURRENT SIGNAL, THEN INITIATES PICKUP OF THE DYNAMIC BRAKINGGRID SHORTING CONTACTORS WHENEVER THE RATIO OF THE BRAKING GRID CURRENTSIGNAL TO THE FIELD CURRENT SIGNAL (IG/IF) DECREASES BELOW A PREDETERMINED LEVEL.
DYNAfilC BRAKING GRID PROTECTION MODULE:
THE DG100 MODULE CONTAINS A DETECTOR STAGE AND AN OUTPUT STAGE. THEDETECTOR STAGE MONITORS GRID CURRENT AND GRID VOLTAGE. A POSITIVE SIGNALIS PROVIDED FROM THE DETECTOR STAGE TO THE OUTPUT STAGE IF THE RATIO OFGRID VOLTAGE TO GRID CURRENT RISES ABOVE A PREDETERMINED VALUE. THISPOSITIVE SIGNAL TO THE OUTPUT STAGE RESULTS IN REMOVING EXCITATION FROMTHE MAIN GENERATOR AND THE B CONTACTOR ALSO DROPS OUT. THIS PROTECTSTHE BRAKING GRIDS FROM BURN OUT DUE TO OVERHEATING.
MOTOR TEMPERATURE SIMULATOR MODULE:
THE MOTOR TEMPERATURE SIMULATOR MODULE MS100 PROVIDES A SIGNAL TO PIN26 OF THE LOAD CONTROL MODULE LC100, WHICH RESULTS IN HIGHER PERFORMANCEDURING LOW DRAG SPEED WHEN TRACTION MOTOR TEMPERATURE IS BELOW 170oC, ANDGRADUALLY REDUCES PERFORMANCE TO NORMAL AS TRACTION MOTOR TEMPERATUREINCREASES TO 180oC. THIS ALLOWS FOR EXTRA PULLING POWER WHEN THE MOTORSARE COOLER AND PROTECTS THE MOTORS BY REDUCING PULLING POWER WHEN THEMOTORS ARE HOT.
MOTOR FEEDBACK MODULE:
THE MOTOR FEEDBACK MODULE Hil 00 MONITORS THE CURRENT OF EACH TRACTION MOTORAND DEVELOPS SIGNALS PROPORTIONAL TO THE LOWEST MOTOR CURRENT, HIGHESTMOTOR CURRENT, LOWEST MOTOR CURRENT ABOVE 75 AMPERES, AND AVERAGE MOTORCURRENT. THE FM100 MODULE USES THESE SIGNALS TO PROVIDE POWERED LOCKEDWHEEL PROTECTION, OPEN MOTOR CIRCUIT INDICATION, AND TO DRIVE THE LOADINDICATING METER.
GOVERNOR CONTROL ~IODULE:
THE GOVERNOR CONTROL MODULE PROVIDES INTERFACE FUNCTIONS FROM THE THROTTLESWITCHES TO THE LC ~IODULE AND TO THE GOVERNOR SPEED SETTING SOLENOIDSDURING POWER OPERATION. THE GC MODULE ALSO PROVIDES INTERFACE BETWEENTHE DYNAMIC BRAKING 21T CIRCUIT AND THE GOVERNOR SPEED SETTING SOLENOIDSDURING DYNAMIC BRAKE OPERATION.

THE EN100 MODULE ESTABLISHES WHEEL CREEP LIMIT BY LIMITING MAIN GENERATOROUTPUT VOLTAGE TO A VALUE PROPORTIONAL TO TRUE TRACK SPEED PLUS AN ALLOWABLE WHEEL CREEP. THE PERCENTAGE OF ALLOWABLE WHEEL CREEP CHANGES ASTRACK SPEED CHANGES. THE ALLOWABLE WHEEL CREEP AT'30 11ILES PER HOUR ISABOUT 9% AND DECREASES TO ABOUT 3% AT 100 MILES PER HOUR. ASSUME THATMAIN GENERATOR OUTPUT VOLTAGE IS 1000 VOLTS A> A TRUE TRACK SPEED OF 50MILES PER HOUR WITH NO WHEEL CREEP AND 1060 VOLTS AT A TRUE TRACK SPEEDOF 50 MILES PER HOUR WITH 6% WHEEL CREEP. ASSUME THAT MAXII1Ur1 WHEEL CREEPIS LIMITED TO 6% AT 50 MILES PER HOUR. iHEREFORE, f~IN GENERATOR OUTPUTVOLTAGE IS LIMITED TO 1060 VOLTS AT 50 MILES PER HOUR. THE EN MODULEOPENS THE SENSOR STRING TO REDUCE EXCITATION IF MAIN GENERATOR OUTPUTVOLTAGE RISES ABOVE 1060 VOLTS AT A TRUE TRACK SPEED OF 50 MILES PERHOUR. THEREFORE, THE EN flODULE LIMITS WHEEL CREEP TO A flAXIMUM OF 6% AT50 MILES PER HOUR BY LIMITING MAIN GENERATOR OUTPUT VOLTAGE TO A VALUEPROPORTIONAL TO TRUE TRACK SPEED PLUS THE ALLOWED WHEEL CREEP.
EXCITATION LIMIT MODULE:
THE EXCITATION LIMIT MODULE EL100 MONITORS MAIN GENERATOR EXCITATIONCURRENT ANu PROVIDES A SIGNAL TO OPEN THE SENSOR STRING ON THE LC MODULE
LOAD CONTROL MODULE:
THROTTLE SIGNALS AND THE LOAD REGULATOR SIGNAL ARE APPLIED TO. THE LCMODULE TO OBTAIN CURRENT LIMIT, VOLTAGE LIMIT, AND KILOWATT LIMIT REFERENCESIGNALS FOR EACH THROTTLE POSITION. THE LC MODULE USES THE MAIN GENERATOROUTPUT CURRENT AND VOLTAGE SIGNALS TO DEVELOP CURRENT, VOLTAGE, AND KILOWATTFEEDBACK SIGNALS.
THE LC MODULE COMPARES THE FEEDBACK SIGNALS WITH THE LIMIT REFERENCESIGNALS. REMOVAL OF THE GATING PULSESBLOCKS EXCITATION FROM THE MAIN GENERATOR FIELD WHICH RESULTS IN A DECREASEIN MAIN GENERATOR OUTPUT. THE GATING SIGNALS ARE REAPPLIED WHEN ALL THEFEEDBACK SIGNALS DECREASE BELOW THEIR RESPECTIVE LIMIT REFERENCE SIGNALS.
GENERATOR FEEDBACK MODULE:
THE GENERATOR FEEDBACK MODULE FG100 MONITORS HIGH VOLTAGE DC FEEDBACKSIGNALS FROM THE MAIN GENERATOR AND FROM THE LOAD REGULATOR OR THEDYNAMIC BRAKE RHEOSTAT. THE SIGNALS ARE ELECTRICALLY ISOLATED, FILTERED,AND ADJUSTED FOR CONTROL USAGE. THE MAIN GENERATOR VOLTAGE SIGNAL RATIOIS 125V/V. THE LOAD REGULATOR SIGNAL AND THE DYNM\IC BRAKE RHEOSTATSIGNAL RATIO IS 7.3V/V.
THE FG100 MODULE ALSO MONITORS THE MAIN GENERATOR CURRENT FEEDBACK SI~NALS
FROM THE CURRENT TRANSFORMERS. THESE SIGNALS ARE RECTIFIED FILTERED, AND ADJUSTED FOR CONTROL USAGE. THE MAIN GENERATOR CURRENT SIGNALS HAVE A RATIOOF 600A/V FOR FOUR MOTOR LOCOMOTIVES AND 900A/V FOR SIX AXLE LOCOMOTIVES.

AT LOW DRAG SPEEDS, THE EXCITATION LIMIT MODULE EL100 LIMITS MAIN GENERATORFIELD CURRENT TO THE DESIRED MAXIMUM LEVEL. ,1HEN TRACK SPEED INCREASES ABOVEA PREDETERMINED SPEED, THE WHEEL OVERS PEED MODULE W0100 PROVIDES A RECALIBRATION SIGNAL TO THE EL 100 I~ODULE. THIS RECALIBRATION OF THE EL 100 MODULERESULTS IN LIMITING MAIN GENERATOR FIELD CURRENT TO A LOWER LEVEL WHENTRACK SPEED RISES ABOVE THE PREDETERMINED SPEED. AT SOME HIGHER TRACKSPEED THE WO MODULE OPERATES TO DROP OUT THE EQP RELAY TO PREVENT WHEELOVERS PEED.
SENSOR MODULE:
THE SENSOR MODULE SE100 CONTROLS MAIN GENERATOR FIELD EXCITATION CURRENTLEVEL. FIELD EXCITATION CURRENT IS PROVIDED BY THE D14 ALTERNATOR THROUGHSILICON CONTROLLED RECTIFIERS SCR1, SCR2, AND SCR3 ON THE SCR ASSEMBLY.THESE SILICON CONTROLLED RECTIFIERS WILL NOT CONDUCT UNTIL THEY AREFORWARD BIASED (ANODE POSITIVE WITH RESPECTIVE TO CATHODE) AND A GATINGSIGNAL IS APPLIED TO THE CATHODE GATE. THE GATING SIGNAL IS A VOLTAGE, APPLIEDTO THE CATHODE GATE, WHICH IS POSITIVE WITH RESPECT TO THE CATHODE. AFTERCONDUCTION STARTS, THE GATING SIGNAL LOSES CONTROL, AND CONDUCTION CONTIN-UES AS LONG AS THE ANODE IS POSITIVE WITH RESPECT TO THE CATHODE.
SANDING MODULE:
THE SANDING f~DULE SA100 PROVIDES SIGNALS TO THE APPLICABLE SANDING MAGNETVALVES WHEN AN AUTOMATIC SANDING SIGNAL OR THE EMERGENCY SANDING SIGNAL ISAPPLI ED TO THE SA MODULE. THE SA MODULE WI LL RESPOND TO MANUAL SAND INGSIGNALS FROM THE f~NUAL SANDING LEVER OR FROM THE LEAD TRUCK SAND SWITCHPRIOR TO TRANSFER TO THE SUPER SERIES MODE OF OPERATION, PROVIDED TRACKSPEED IS BELOW FIVE MILES PER HOUR. THIS PROVIDES FOR THE APPLICATION OFSAND TO INCREASE ADHESION WHEN STARTING OUT FROM STANDSTILL.
VOLTAGE REGULATOR MODULE:
THE VOLTAGE REGULATOR MODULE VR IS A SOLID-STATE VOLTAGE REGULATOR DESIGNEDTO MAINTAIN OUTPUT VOLTAGE OF THE AUXILIARY GENERATOR TO WITHIN +1 VOLT OFTHE "SET POINT." THE VR MODULE IS USUALLY ADJUSTED FOR A NOMINAL OUTPUTVOLTAGE OF 74 VOLTS FROfI THE AUXILIARY GENERATOR, BUT CAN BE ADJUSTED FOR ANYOUPUT BETWEEN 71 AND 77 VOLTS. THE VR MODULE WILL MAINTAIN THE OUTPUT TOWITHIN +1 VOLT OF THE "SET POINT" AT AUXILIARY GENERATOR ROTATING SPEEDS BETWEEN 825 AND 3,000 RPM, AT ANY LOAD BETWEEN NO LOAD AND FULL RATED LOADAND WITHIN A TEMPERATURE RANGE OF -400 TO + 800C.
