Hello Everyone,

Spring is here at last. Events are popping up just like new

spring growth. Check your Homefront so you don’t miss a

single one. Take a look online to see what is going on in

other counties since the weather has turned and driving is

more of a pleasure than a chore.

This year’s International Lesson went well. Thank you units

for all your help and support, I could not have done this

without you. Attendance at our Unit 18 Retreat was up and

that made for a very enlightening and rewarding day. Mark

your calendars to attend the next meeting hosted by

Christian County. We will be posting more information as the

date gets closer.

I hope everyone had a great time at the Table Setting

Luncheon, I know I did. We were blessed with great weather

and all of you ladies should be commended for all your hard

work to pull it off.

The more time we spend helping others and attending

functions the more we will learn and grow. Let’s get out there

and let people know about our Home and Community

Education Association. See you around.

The next Safe Sitter class for

girls and boys ages 11 to 13 will

be held on Wednesday, July 9

and Thursday, July 10 from 8:00

a.m. until 2:30 p.m. at the

Christian County Extension

Office.

The two-day Safe Sitter program is sponsored by

University of Illinois Extension Christian County,

Christian County Home and Community Education

Association, and Taylorville Memorial Hospital.

During the course, students get hands-on practice in

basic life-saving techniques so they are prepared to act

in a crisis, with medical information taught by a certified

professional.

Safe Sitter participants also receive helpful tips to

make them more confident caregivers, learning safety

and security precautions, such as what to do if a

stranger comes to the door and when and how to call

for help. Information on child development and

age-appropriate activities, and the business

aspects of babysitting are also taught.

To become a certified Safe Sitter, students have to

pass a rigorous practical and written test to show

they have mastered the key concepts and have

the skills necessary to handle an emergency.

For a registration form or information, call the

Christian County at 287-7246. There is a limit to

the number of participants we can accommodate

in the class, so register as soon as possible. The

registration fee is $35, and pre-paid registration is

due by Tuesday, July 1.

Registration fees will not be refunded for

cancellations made less than 24 hours in advance.

“Dishing Up with HCEA” the 21st Annual Table Setting Luncheon and Plant Sale Submitted by Debi Kiefer, Secretary

Those who attended the 21st Annual Table Setting

Luncheon and Plant Sale found it sunny outside

and cheerful inside. Dining tables decorated with

canning jars, cookbooks, and cooking items, ten

wonderful table entries set with “Dishing Up with

HCEA” themes, gorgeous hanging baskets, and

beautiful potted annuals greeted those who

entered the U of I Extension auditorium to eat

lunch, view the table entries, and/ or buy plants.

Edinburg Nite Unit’s table setting entry “Dishin’ It

Up Chuckwagon Style” was voted favorite in the

Casual category. “Bon Appétit” the table setting

created by Center Unit was the favorite in the

Elegant category. New Vision 4-H Club’s entry

“Dishing Up Treasure” was selected favorite in the

Youth category. Each received a $10 prize. Mary

Lou Knoseman of Pawnee was the lucky winner of

the door prize, a lovely hanging basket of pink,

purple, and yellow petunias.

The Table Setting Luncheon and Plant Sale was

once again a successful fundraiser. During the

luncheon over 200 meals were served. Over 70 of

these were carry-outs. $1873 has been turned in

for tickets purchased and/or sold by members and

those bought at the door. So far none of the major

expenses have been paid. The profit from the

luncheon remains unknown until all expenses have

been submitted and paid. $1,614 was taken in at

the Plant Sale. Expenses were $1,101.25 which

included cost of plants and change leaving a profit

of $512.75.

Thank you to all who helped make this event a

success.

The Christian County HCEA Board was called to

order at 9:19 a.m. on May 6, 2014 at the Extension

office.

President Julie Pearson delivered three weather

radios donated by HCEA to Christian County

Emergency Manager Mike Crews for people in our

area. She read note from the family of Jeanne Lee

thanking Christian County HCEA for the memorial

made in her name to Operation Santa and a note

from Chris Metz of Operation Santa thanking

Christian County HCEA for the donation in honor of

Jeanne Lee.

1st Vice President Dorothy Siles reported that Martha

Zimmerman would present the Lesson for Living:

“Genealogy 101” on September 23 at 7:00 p.m. She

purchased three weather radios for HCEA which will

be donated to people in Christian County.

2nd Vice President Betty Blome announced that the

theme for the Membership Meeting is “Stir Up HCEA.”

Secretary Deborah Kiefer sent a note to Dr. Kamau

Kemayo, UIS professor of African American studies,

thanking him for presenting “An Overview of South

African Cultural History” at the countywide

International event. She contacted Georgette

Merrifield and Rosella Brookens and coordinated the

scheduling of the Lesson for Living training they will

be giving in 2015. After scheduling the auditorium for

lesson training in October 2014, January, April, May,

August, and October 2015, Deborah revised the

Lesson for Living Sign Up sheets for 2014-2015 which

were included in mailings to units. She completed the

Table Setting Luncheon program, revised the ballot,

and created the table entry signs.

Treasurer Berniece Larimore reported that the total

assets as of April were $14,047.27.

Family Issues & 4-H Director Joan Swearingen did

ordering and purchasing for the Table Setting

Luncheon and Plant Sale. She worked on Friday

picking up food and helping set up for the

luncheon. Saturday Joan was in charge of the

Plant Sale.

discussed and signed.

Julie Pearson, Betty Blome, Deborah Kiefer,

Berniece Larimore, Joan Swearingen, Janet

Stender, and Rosella Brookens attended the Unit

18 Spring Retreat. The program on “Colors” was

very interesting. Christian County will host the

tentative date. Ideas for a program were

discussed.

The 21st Annual Table Setting Luncheon “Dishing

Up with HCEA” was held Saturday May 3, 2014.

One 4-H Club who submitted a table setting entry

form did not display a table. Everyone thought the

fundraiser was successful. We served

food. Bills for food and advertising have not yet

been submitted and/or paid. Favorites were

Casual—Edinburg Nite Unit, Elegant—Center
