Nowrouz, the first day ofFarvardin (the first month of the Persian calendar), the celebration of starting the New Year, is one the most ancient celebrations remained from the ancient Iran. Nowrouz, the frrst day of Farvardin (The Pers ian Calendar), is the Celebration of the Iranian New Year and one of the most ancient festivities remained fro m the ancient Iran. Mowrouz dates back to the ancient Iran and the people of the same culture in this region, celebrate it that is on the beginning of spring.

As Nowruz is one of the most ancient traditions in the Iranian plateau and has been

remained from the ancient history consistently and its philosophy is transition of

nature. is still a living tradition and the reason behind lies in the ancient Iranian

customs, the history ofthe country and the Iranian's cultural memory.

Today, in the third millennium, despite of the cultural transformations in this

region and around the world, this tradition not only has been forgotten. but also is

celebrated around the Iranian plateau, the countries vvith the same Iranian culture,

and it is a great honour for Iran and the Iranians. As the inscription ofNowruz is

arranged to be on the UNESCO's world list of intangible heritage, under the title of

The heritage whether cultural, historical, natural or intangible one, represents the

people's identity of that region. Among these different types of heritage, intangible

cultural heritage is the most vulnerable one and needs more consetTations and

supports. The more countries support, the more effective and constant policies for

intangible heritage it will be.

The significant celebration ofNowruz, as the most ancient annual festival of the

peoples of the region. needs more attention and extensive supports for

conservation. Thus. the inscription Nowruz on the UNESCO's world list of

intangible cultural heritage, would be a great step forward in this matter.

I, Keyvan Moshref Azad Tehrani, as one the activists in film making. and

The request for the inscription of Nowruz on the World List of Intangible Cultural

Heritage

Regional Countries

Nowruz is the significant festival of New Year celebrated extensively from

Tajikistan to Turkey. The nations of such wide area celebrate the arrival ofthe new·

year at the beginning of spring. Due to the thousands years continuation of this

common tradition among peoples of the region, they share a common culture with

a strong affinity. There is a general consensus among all of the countries, nations

and groups who celebrate Nowruz, about conservation of this shared cultural

heritage. By inscribing Nowruz on the v,rorld list of intangible cultural heritage

jointly with these countries, the signatories would be delighted and grateful. In

addition to these countries : Iran, Azerbaijan, Iraq, Turkey, Turkmenistan.

Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, India. Afghanistan, Pakistan and Uzbekistan.
