    CAP209: GRAPHIC TOOLS

    DOA- January 20, 2011 DOS- February 01,2011DOT February 04, 2011

    PART A

    1. There are various tools available to implement web and

windows based applications. Discuss the various tools indetail.

Ans.1. web application is an application that is accessedover a network such as the Internet or an intranet. The termmay also mean a computer software application that is hostedin a browser-controlled environment (e.g. aJava applet) orcoded in a browser-supported language (such asJavaScript, combined with a browser-rendered markup language like HTML)and reliant on a common web browser to render the application

    executable.

Web applications are popular due to the ubiquity of webbrowsers, and the convenience of using a web browser as aclient, sometimes called a thin client. The ability to update andmaintain web applications without distributing and installingsoftware on potentially thousands of client computers is a keyreason for their popularity, as is the inherent support for cross-platform compatibility. Common web applications include

webmail, online retail sales, online auctions, wikis and manyother functions.

Browser applications typically include simple office software(word processors, online spreadsheets, and presentation tools),with Google Docs being the most notable example, and canalso include more advanced applications such as projectmanagement, computer-aided design, video editing and point-of-sale.

    Some useful software:

Adobe Photoshop is a graphics editing program developed andpublished by Adobe Systems Incorporated.

Adobe's 2003 "Creative Suite" rebranding led to Adobe Photoshop 8'srenaming to Adobe Photoshop CS. Thus, Adobe Photoshop CS5 is the 12thmajor release of Adobe Photoshop. The CS rebranding also resulted inAdobe offering numerous software packages containing multiple Adobeprograms for a reduced price. Adobe Photoshop is released in twoeditions: Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe Photoshop Extended, withthe Extended having extra features available. Adobe Photoshop Extendedis included in all of Adobe's Creative Suite offerings except DesignStandard, which includes the Adobe Photoshop edition.

Adobe Dreamweaver (formerly Macromedia Dreamweaver) is a web

development application originally created by Macromedia, and is nowdeveloped by Adobe Systems, which acquired Macromedia in 2005.

Dreamweaver is available for both Mac and Windows operating systems.Recent versions have incorporated support for web technologies such asCSS,JavaScript, and various server-side scripting languages andframeworks including ASP, Col.

CorelDraw is capable of handling multiple pages along with multiplemaster layers. Multipage documents are easy to create and edit and theCorel print engine allows for booklet and other imposition so even simpleprinters can be used for producing finished documents. One of the usefulfeatures for single and multi-page documents is the ability to create linkedtext boxes across documents that can be resized and moved while thetext itself resets and flows through the boxes. Useful for creating andediting multi-article newsletters etc.

Smaller items, like business cards, invitations etc., can be designed totheir final page size and imposed to the printer's sheet size for cost-

effective printing. An additional print-merge feature (using a spreadsheetor text merge file) allows full personalization for many things likenumbered raffle tickets, individual invitations, membership cards andmore

    2. What is the use of Adobe Photoshop and Corel draw indesktop publishing?

Ans. Photoshop is one of the premiere graphics softwarepackages used in conjunction with desktop publishingprojects. Learn how to get the most out of Adobe

Photoshop as a standalone tool and when used with otherdesktop publishing software programs.

WELCOME TO THE LOVELY PROFESSIONAL UNIVERSITY

Graphics Software: Has tips, software tutorials, freedownloads, actions, plug-ins, training and support, andother resources for Photoshop users. Adobe Photoshop is

the leading image editor for professional desktoppublishing and graphic design.

Graphics Software: Photoshop Elements is Adobe'ssoftware for the "prosumer" user including digital imaginghobbyists, amateur photographers, and business users

Mostly I use Adobe Photoshop to print & publish any typeof designing. Some time I import from adobe illustrator but

I am the creator in illustrator.

I saw a Corel page that claims Corel Draw Graphics Suiteis good for desktop publishing, but when I examined thedetails, it doesn't appear there is any desktop publishingprogram included. It's just Corel Draw itself. I currentlyown Corel Draw X3, and I don't see it as a really good toolfor publishing, except for short documents, flyers, etc. Itdoesn't look like Corel Draw X5 has any desktop publishing

    improvements over X3

Some of the things I would like to see improved are:1. Easier creation of internet links (web addresses, email

addresses). It's a major pain right now. Why can't Corelhandle it the way Microsoft Word does? Simply create alink automatically any time a URL or an email address istyped in. Will that ever happen?

    2. Easier copy & paste, especially the special paste

options. Right now, it's totally counter-intuitive. I try touse special paste to paste in some text, and instead, the text is entered as a completely new object, insteadof inserting it into the paragraph I am in the middle ofediting!

    3. Importing documents from PageMaker. Will there everbe an option to do this? I use Adobe PageMaker 7.0, butit looks like Adobe is letting this product slowly die out.

They want everyone to switch to In Design, which is

    outrageously too expensive

Although I have used and continue to use many differentdesktop publishing software programs, for 90% of what Icreate for print I use Adobe in Design along with Corel

Photo-Paint and Corel DRAW. However, the bulk of my day-to-day work these days involves publishing online. For thatI use a proprietary Content Management System -- mostdesign is out of my hands. However, I do find myself usingGoogle Docs online for more and more work that had beendone before using desktop applications. What little bit ofactual Web design/HTML I do (for personal blogs) is donewith a plain text editor.

    3. Discuss all the designing capabilities of any 3 Computerand the various Softwares available in market fordesigning.

Ans. Types of Graphic Design Software

There are many various graphic design softwares available inthe market today that are can either be used to create graphicdesigns or can used to view them. These graphics can beanalyzed as:

    1. Raster graphics

A raster graphics image or picture is a graphic whichconsists of generally very simple lines which combine toform an image.

    2. Vector graphics

These are a combination of different tools such as lines, polygons and other geometric figures to represent an image.

There are a number of softwares that work either on raster orvector graphics, but there are a few softwares in the marketnow that combine both to provide a much better graphic. Mostgraphic programs also have the ability to export and importmore than one program file.

There are also several graphic programs that support animation

and graphic pictures such as Macromedia Flash Player andother programs. Vectors graphics can be further defined as a

series of mathematical figures, while raster graphics can bedefined as the film based animation which combines a lot offeatures to produce a moving film or animation.

Some of the popular raster graphics programs include:

    1. GIMP:

This software GNU Image Manipulation Program or theGIMP is a bitmap raster editor, a program for running andcreating raster graphics. It also supports vector basedgraphics to some extent. This software was developed in1995 by Spencer Kimball and Peter Mattie and is nowmaintained by a group of volunteers. It is licensed by theGNU public license.

    2. Paint Shop Pro:

Paint Shop Pro is a bitmap graphic editor for people

running Microsoft Windows operating systems. Publishedby the Minneapolis-based Jasc Software, Paint Shop Pro isvery popular and useful for the web and graphicdesigners.

    3. Adobe Photoshop:

Adobe Photoshop is a bitmap graphic editor published by

Adobe Systems. It is the market leader of graphic designsoftware in the field and has nearly monopolized themarket. It is commonly known as Photoshop. As with mostof Adobe's other applications, Photoshop is available forMac OS and Microsoft Windows. Versions up to PhotoshopCS 8.0 can also be run under operating systems such asLinux with an emulation program such as Crossover Office.

The following are some popular vector graphic design

    softwares:

    1. Macromedia Flash Player:

Macromedia Flash Player is a vector animation supportingprogram written and marketed by Macromedia that usesvector graphics. The files of this program are called Flashfiles and appear in a webpage to view animations in a webbrowser. To view these Flash files one must have a Flashplayer downloaded into his system.

    2. Adobe Live Motion:

Adobe Live Motion is a creation by Adobe System whichwas introduced as a direct competitor to Macromedia'sFlash player. Both these softwares are nearly the same.

    PART B

    4. Write down the various colour modes supported by

Photoshop?Ans. Photoshop supports the HSB (hue, saturation, andbrightness), RGB, CMYK, Lab, Indexed, Duotone, Grayscale,Multichannel, and Bitmap color modes. To convert an imagefrom one color mode to another, select Image > Mode andselect a color mode.

These are the five most commonly used color modes:

RGB: The RGB mode represents the three colorsred, green, and blueused by devices such as scanners ormonitors to acquire or display color. If your image is intendedfor display on a screen or Web site, for instance, RGB is thebest color mode to use. It's also the mode most scanners applywhen digitizing an image. CMYK: The CMYK mode is used to produce colorseparations of cyan, magenta, yellow, and black. Use thismode if your image is intended for printing on printing presses.

Lab Color: Lab color is device-independent, meaning thatthe color mode is based on the perception of the human eye

rather than a mechanical ink or light system. Lab colorconsists of three channels: a lightness channel (L), a greenredcomponent (a), and a blueyellow component (b). Lab color

mode is useful for defining color values because differentdevices produce color differently; it provides a system fortranslating color from device to device in a standardizedfashion. Grayscale: Grayscale mode displays what we traditionallythink of as a black-and-white image. It includes black andwhite and shades of gray in between. Grayscale is verypopular for portrait photography, artistic photographycompositions, and is also useful for printing on black-and-white

printers. Bitmap: Bitmap images (not to be confused with theBitmap file format) are the simplest form of a true black-and-white graphic image. Their pixels are either black or white; youuse this mode to create line art and digital halftones. A fax, forexample, is a true bitmap image when recreated on thereceiving end.

    5. Images can be modified in Adobe Photoshop. Suggestdifferent ways in which an image can be modified.

The Layers palette will display each of the

layers for your image. This image currently hasonly one layer. In the skill development activitybelow we will add additional layers.

The Color palette displays the color values forthe background and foreground colors. You canchange the color by dragging the color sliders.

You can also select the size of the brush

diameter by clicking on the Brushes tab.

The Tool Bar is where you will select the tool you wish to use tomake image manipulations. We will use several of the differenttools in the skill development activities below.

Now that we know a little bit about the basics, let's open animage and make some changes.

    Opening Images inPhotoshop

Go to the File Menu and select Open. The following window will appearand you will need to navigate to find where you have saved yourimage. For this example, I am opening an image that is saved on a ZIPdisk. To locate an image stored on your hard drive, simply click thearrow in the window next to the word "ZIP" and select your hard drive.

As you can see in this example, there are several files listed. To openan image, select the image you want to open and click Open.

The first manipulation we are going to make is tocrop the image. This means we are going to select aspecific portion of the image and cut out the rest.

The portion inside of the selection area will beretained and the portion outside of the selection areawill be removed. There are two ways to crop an

image. You can use the marquee tool or the crop tool.

Using the Marquee toolto crop an image:

    Step 1

    First select therectangle marqueetool.

You will notice thatwhen you place your

cursor on the imagecross hairs appear.

    Step 2

Click the mouse andhold down whiledragging the cursorover the area of the

image that you want toretain. Once you have

    Step 3

Go to the Image menuand select Crop.

    ResizingImages

The next skill development activity will demonstrate how to resize an

image. The size of the image will depend on what it is to be used for. Agood size for web images is 320 x 240 pixels. This will take up onefourth of the screen and will therefore leave room for your text. Insome cases, the details of an image are what is important and for thatreason, a larger image is desired. One way to save space and preservethe detail of an image is by creating a thumbnail of the image. Theuser can then click on the thumbnail to view an enlarged version of theimage. For the first skill development activity we will resize an image.Next we will create a thumbnail.

    Creating ThumbnailImages

A thumbnail is basically a small image that is linked to a larger image.Creating a thumbnail is easy. We will be using Adobe Photoshop 5.0 LEand Dreamweaver 3 for this skill development activity.

    Step 1

Follow the steps above to resize your image. Youshould now have two images with different names (alarge image and a small image).

    Step 2

Open Dreamweaver and insert the thumbnail (the small image) into atable by selecting the Image menu and clicking Insert. Click here fordetailed help on Inserting Images.

    Step 3

Once the image is inserted, click on the image so that it is active. When the image is active, the Source field "Src" should contain thename of your thumbnail image.

background layer. You can add additional layers to the document.Layers allow you add specific elements to your image without affectingthe information contained on the other layers. Each layer is essentially

superimposed over the other and can be modified on an individuallayer basis.

To add a new layer, click on the layer iconlocated at the bottom of the layers palette.

The new layer will be added. At this point thereis nothing on the new layer. Always renameyour layers to indicate what is on the layer. Torename a layer, double click where it says"Layer 1" in the layers palette. The followingbox will appear and you can type in the newname.

    6. How can you record different actions applied on animage?Ans. To record an action, open up a test image to work with. Youmust first create a new action set to contain the new action.Next, click on create new action button at the bottom of theaction panel. This adds a new action set. Give the action a

name and then press the record button. At this stage you canalso assign a custom keystroke using the function keys (f1-f5)combined with the shift key or ctrl keys. You can then simplyuse the key combination to initiate running a particular action. Now carry out the Photoshop steps you wish to record andwhen u r finished click the stop recording button.

Watch out for recording commands the rely on the use ofnamed layers or channels that may be present in your test file,as these will not be recognized when the use of named layersor channels that may be present in your test file, as these willnot be recognized when the action is applied to a new image.

Also try to make sure that your actions will not always beconditional on starting in a specific color mode, or being of acertain size. If you intend recording a complex action, the best

approach is to carefully plan in advance the sequence ofPhotoshop steps you intended to record. A stop can be insertedin an action and this will always open a message dialog at acertain point during playback. If you want to save action, itmust be saved with in a set.
