thDear Participants of the 11 Balaton Symposium,

Attila FelingerSymposium Chairman

On behalf of the Organizing Committee, it gives me a great pleasure to thwelcome you at the 11 Balaton Symposium on High-Performance Separation

Methods.

The Hungarian Society for Separation Sciences (HSSS) is happy to continue the well-established series of Balaton Symposia. It is extraordinary that biannually the Balaton Symposium brings together separation scientists and friends from all over the world.

thThe aim of the 11 Balaton Symposium is to bring together experts, users, and scientists of high-performance separation methods to discuss the latest issues, current requirements, and technological challenges we face in the present and future.

Our community has been saddened by the news that Professor Ernő Tyihák passed away on February 13, 2017 at the age of 84. Prof. Ernő Tyihák was one of the Hungarian pioneers of separation sciences. He was the main inventor of overpressured layer chromatography (OPLC). He combined OPLC with direct bioautography and further developed it to the BioArena system which is suitable to study the mechanism of effect of antibiotic compounds. He has been an active scientist until the last minute of his life. He published papers and books and presented lectures until the last day of his life as intensely as before retirement.

thSadly, we dedicate the 11 Balaton Symposium to the memory of Professor

Ernő Tyihák.

The Balaton Symposium traditionally provides a forum to celebrate outstanding separation scientists. The Halász Medal Award and the Csaba Horváth Memorial Award are to be presented at the opening ceremony. For the first time at the symposium, the Ervin sz. Kováts Award for Young Scientists will be presented. The 2017 award honors PhD dissertations accomplished by young researchers, defended or published between January 2015 and December 2016. The award is endowed with an amount of 4000 CHF in addition to a diploma and an

thinvitation to the 11 Balaton Symposium.thThe scientific program of the 11 Balaton Symposium clearly demonstrates

the breadth of separation science; it includes 56 oral lectures from diverse areas. Important scientific results and advances are discussed in the poster sessions with 54 poster presentations. The exhibition includes 12 vendors displaying the latest commercial advances of separation techniques.

Many people need to be thanked for making this Symposium possible. I would like to thank the members of the International Scientific Committee for promoting the Symposium. I also thank our sponsors and exhibitors for providing generous financial support. Special thanks go to all of the people who submitted excellent abstracts from many areas of separation science.

thI wish all participants of the 11 Balaton Symposium an intellectually stimulating and rewarding meeting as well as an enjoyable time in Siófok.

Ernő Tyihák (1933–2017)

Professor Ernő Tyihák, former scien-tific adviser at Plant Protection Institute, Centre for Agricultural Research, Hungarian Academy of Sciences (HAS)

thpassed away on 24 February 2017.

Ernő Tyihák was a highly respected expert in the field of conventional as well as forced-flow planar layer chromato-graphy. He mainly focused on the practical aspects of chromatography that was an important tool for him to better understand biological phenomena. He was a great innovator, passionately developing research methods to expand their applicability as well as improving their efficiency and modelling the life processes.

thProf. Tyihák was born on 29 January 1933 in Tiszaföldvár, Hungary and

spent his childhood there, in his words: “in the Hungarian Provence”. He graduated as a chemical engineer from the Technical University of Budapest in 1958. In that year he chose a job in the Research Institute for Medicinal Plants (Budapest, later Budakalász), because he was interested in the research of medicinal natural substances – an interest that lasted for a lifetime. He examined essential oils, the variability of the constituents of endemic medicinal plants (chemotaxonomy) and started the investigation of the role of formaldehyde in the biological world, mainly by the use of thin-layer chromatography (TLC), thus he pioneered the spread of thin-layer chromatography in Hungary. The “map-chromatography” and the ultramicro chamber (elimination of vapour phase from the TLC system) were introduced by him for the better separation of natural products.

In 1978, he obtained the candidate of chemical science degree of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in biochemistry and the technical doctor degree at Technical University of Budapest for the isolation of antitumoral substances from plants and mushrooms such as clavicepamines (iso-poly-peptides) from saprophytic Claviceps purpurea.

4

Page 5: 11 th BALATON SYMPOSIUM · Balaton Symposium brings together separation scientists and friends from all ... as forced-flow planar layer chromato-graphy. He mainly focused on the ...

Prof. Tyihák was the leading co-inventor of overpressured layer chromatography (OPLC), one of the forced–flow planar layer chromato-graphic techniques. In 1979, the combination of a pressurized ultramicro chamber and a pump system led to OPLC, the real planar version of HPLC. A series of patent applications in the field of OPLC were announced and the instruments were introduced to the market. In 1994, he obtained the doctor of chemical sciences (DSc) degree of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in analytical chemistry in the field of OPLC.

Later, his main research fields beyond OPLC were stress- and resistance-biology. In 1983 he was invited to the Plant Protection Institute of HAS (now Plant Protection Institute, Centre for Agricultural Research, HAS) to organize and direct the Department of Resistance-Biology and Bio-chemistry, where he worked till the end of 2011 as a scientific adviser. He examined the role of formaldehyde in disease-resistance, the normal and abnormal cell proliferation and the natural apoptosis. He introduced several new technical terms, among others the formaldehyde cycle, the double and the quadruple immune response. Also, he is the inventor of BioArena, the improvement of direct bioautography that allows the examination of the antimicrobials' action mechanism.

The education of younger generations was very important to him and he was always glad to pass his knowledge on to his colleagues. Although he worked at research institutes, he became a lecturer at Budapest University of Technology and Economics for chromatography, mainly OPLC, he was a titular associate professor at the Semmelweis (Medical) University (Budapest), as well as honorary professor at University of Szeged (Szeged, Hungary) for chromatography and pharmacognosy.

Prof. Tyihák was full of enthusiasm for his scientific investigations and was always ready to co-operate. He published over 200 scientific papers, wrote several book chapters and had 25 patent applications. He received numerous awards as an appreciation for his scientific achievements (Béla Tankó award in 1972, Győző Bruckner award in 2004, Hormesis award in 2007 and Candin Liteanu Medal and Diploma in 2011).
