Service Sources Worship lies at the heart of the Christian life. It is in worship that we express our theology and define our identity. It is through encountering God within worship that we are formed and transformed as God’s people.

One of the glories of the Episcopal Church is its liturgical worship. Liturgy refers to the patterns, forms, words and actions through which public worship is conducted. Today we are using the words from Common Worship, a family of volumes which, together with the Book of Common Prayer, make up the official liturgical resource of the Church of England.

News As the Diocese of Wyoming prepares to search for a new bishop, the oversight committees create a profile of our diocese, which accompanies application materials for candidates. There will be an open, guided discussion lead by Megan Nickles today, Aug 25, 12:30 p.m. downstairs. Consider what you think the purpose of our diocese is, and how do we express that purpose.

Opening Hymn

Gathering Rejoice, people of God! Celebrate the life within you, and Christ’s presence in your midst.

Our eyes shall be opened! The presence will have new meaning, and the future will be bright with hope.

Rejoice, people of God! Bow your heads before the One who is our wisdom and our strength.

We place ourselves before our God, that we may be touched and cleansed by the power of God’s Spirit.

Song of Praise

Prayer of the Day The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. Grant, O merciful God, that your Church, being gathered together in unity by your Holy Spirit, may show forth your power among all peoples, to the glory of your Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Praise him! Praise him!

First Reading Jeremiah 1:4-10 After the reading The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Psalm 71:1-6 1 In you, O LORD, have I taken refuge; *

let me never be ashamed. 2 In your righteousness, deliver me and set me free; *

incline your ear to me and save me. 3 Be my strong rock, a castle to keep me safe; *

you are my crag and my stronghold. 4 Deliver me, my God, from the hand of the wicked, *

from the clutches of the evildoer and the oppressor. 5 For you are my hope, O Lord GOD, *

my confidence since I was young. 6 I have been sustained by you ever since I was born;

from my mother's womb you have been my strength; * my praise shall be always of you.

Second Reading Hebrews 12:18-29 After the reading The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Gospel We stand for the acclamation: “Vexilla Regis,” Westwind Brass.

Alleluia, alleluia. We do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God. Alleluia. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke (13:10-17). Glory to you Lord Christ.

After the reading

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ.

Sermon Affirmation

We stand.

We believe in God, who loves us and wants us to love each other. This is our God. We believe in Jesus, who cared for children and held them in his arms. He wanted a world where everyone could live together in peace. This is Jesus Christ. We believe in the Holy Spirit, who keeps working with us until everything is good and true. This is the Holy Spirit. We can be the church, which reminds people of God because we love each other. This we believe. Amen.

Prayers of the People The intercessor calls us to prayer with a bidding. Today’s response is Lord, in your mercy; Hear our prayer.

We stand, kneel or sit.

Concluding prayer Merciful God, as a potter fashions a vessel from humble clay, you form us into a new creation. Shape us, day by day, through the cross of Christ your Son, until we pray as continually as we breathe and all our acts are prayer; through Jesus Christ and in the mystery of the Holy Spirit, we pray. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer As our Savior taught us, so we pray Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

Page 9: 11 Sunday after Pentecost · 2019. 8. 25. · 2 In your righteousness, deliver me and set me free; * incline your ear to me and save me. 3 Be my strong rock, a castle to keep me safe;

Confession Jesus said: Before you offer your gift, go and be reconciled. As brothers and sisters in God’s family, we come together to ask our Father for forgiveness.

Father eternal, giver of light and grace, we have sinned against you and against our neighbor, in what we have thought, in what we have said and done, through ignorance, through weakness, through our own deliberate fault. We have wounded your love, and marred your image in us. We are sorry and ashamed, and repent of all our sins. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, who died for us, forgive us all that is past; and lead us out from darkness to walk as children of light. Amen.

May almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you your sins, and bring you to everlasting life. Amen.

The Peace May the peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you.

We greet one another in the name of the Lord.

Great Thanksgiving The Lord is here. His Spirit is with us. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give thanks and praise. Almighty God, good Father to us all, your face is turned towards your world. In love you gave us Jesus your Son to rescue us from sin and death. Your Word goes out to call us home to the city where angels sing your praise. We join with them in heaven’s song:

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Father of all, we give you thanks for every gift that comes from heaven. To the darkness Jesus came as your light. With signs of faith and words of hope he touched untouchables with love and washed the guilty clean. This is his story. This is our song: Hosanna in the highest.

The crowds came out to see your Son, yet at the end they turned on him. On the night he was betrayed he came to table with his friends to celebrate the freedom of your people. This is his story. This is our song: Hosanna in the highest.

Page 11: 11 Sunday after Pentecost · 2019. 8. 25. · 2 In your righteousness, deliver me and set me free; * incline your ear to me and save me. 3 Be my strong rock, a castle to keep me safe;

11

Jesus blessed you, Father, for the food; he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and said:

This is my body, given for you all. Jesus then gave thanks for the wine; he took the cup, gave it and said:

This is my blood, shed for you all for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in remembrance of me.

This is our story. This is our song: Hosanna in the highest.

Therefore, Father, with this bread and this cup we celebrate the cross on which he died to set us free. Defying death he rose again and is alive with you to plead for us and all the world. This is our story. This is our song: Hosanna in the highest.

Send your Spirit on us now that by these gifts we may feed on Christ with opened eyes and hearts on fire. May we and all who share this food offer ourselves to live for you and be welcomed at your feast in heaven where all creation worships you, Father, Son and Holy Spirit: Blessing and honor and glory and power be yours for ever and ever. Amen. The presider breaks the consecrated bread.

We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.

Invitation God’s holy gifts for God’s holy people.

Communion We approach the Altar beginning with those sitting in the last rows; they shall be first.

To receive from the common cup, kneel or stand in front of the Altar rail, holding out your hands to receive the bread. When the minister offers the wine, guide the chalice by carefully holding its base, or you may dip the bread into the cup.

Our bread is handmade. If you prefer a wafer, please ask your server.

The Holy Eucharist is the central act of worship in the Episcopal Church. All who seek God are welcome to the Lord’s Table to receive the Bread and Wine of Christ’s Body and Blood.

Strengthen for service, Lord, the hands that have taken holy things; may the ears which have heard your word be deaf to clamor and dispute; may the tongues which have sung your praise be free from deceit; may the eyes which have seen the tokens of your love shine with the light of hope; and may the bodies which have been fed with your body be refreshed with the fullness of your life; glory to you for ever. Amen.

Questions for Reflection When are times that you are not open to God’s healing? How does the knowledge of God’s love and care for you open you more to God’s healing? How do you seek God as a refuge in your daily life?

Household Prayer: Morning God of life and love, we come to this new day refreshed from the refuge of sleep and rest. Sustain us in the coming hours, that we might return this evening, inspired by your witness in the world and having done your will. Amen.

Household Prayer: Evening Lord and keeper of our days, give us your rest this night. Release from us the burdens of the day. Awaken us, refreshed for your service at the dawn, upright in our praise and thanksgiving. Amen.
