11 November 2015 11 November 2015 Principal’s Message In just two weeks the Year 12 students will finish school. These next few weeks are very busy for these students with exams, final assessment, Awards Evening, Formal and Graduation. We encourage all students to remain focussed on their work and ensure that they do their best right up to the final day. At this time of the year it is easy to become distracted from the daily work of school life. Do not let future holidays, end of year parties and Christmas celebrations interrupt the work that still needs to be done. As this year’s seniors prepare to leave the school, I would like to take this opportunity to thank these students for their contribution to the school community at North Rockhampton SHS. Many have been enrolled at North Rocky High for the past 5 years and they have contributed to the positive reputation of the school through their actions and achievements throughout the years. Thank you to all students who have been involved in leadership, sporting, cultural and academic activities during their time at the school. You have made this school what it is today. Thank you also to the parents, carers and extended families of the graduating students. You have been welcome partners in the education of your children and we thank you for your participation in school events and functions and also for the support that you have provided to your son/daughter on a daily basis. Your participation and support is greatly appreciated. As the Year 12 students finish this year I will be taking three weeks long service leave until the end of the school year. Mrs Cynthia O’Sullivan will be the Acting Principal in my absence and Mr Aaron Harmsworth will be Acting Deputy Principal in her place. I have been advised that I will be returning to North Rockhampton SHS as Acting Principal for 2016 and I look forward to working with the school community again next year to continue the work that we have begun. HPESenior HPE are in their final stages of assessment, we wish youall the best of luck and take this opportunity to thank our year12 classes, who at this stage, will all be leaving Year 12 with apass or above. Well done to each of you.

We have been trying to avoid the heat in Junior PE classes, with all classes involved in swimming for one lesson a week.Again, we encourage participation in this very vital element ofour curriculum. If you can’t swim for medical reasons, or anyother reason, please bring a note so your teacher is aware. When not at the pool the classes have been utilising our hallas much as possible. We are very grateful for the installation ofsome ‘big fans’ in the hall which have made things a lot morecomfortable for staff and students.

SPORT

We recently had Clontarf State School visit on their annualsports tour. Our Seniors played Clontarf in 5 sports with TheHawks coming away with 3 wins. We were able to win in mixedtouch, 9 –a-side rugby league and boys futsal, while Clontarfmanaged to win netball and girls futsal. The games were playedin great spirit and all students enjoyed the occasion.

Futsal has now finished for the year. We are proud of the effortof both North Rockhampton High School teams coached byMr Scott Pearson and Chappy Aaron. The girls improved everygame and finished the year off with 2 wins in their last 2 games. The junior boys, predominately made up of Year 7s, were alsobig improvers against some older students from other schools.Well done to both teams.

Still on Futsal and our senior boys team with the aid of ChappyAaron and Mrs Rebecca Hack, went to Brisbane for theNational Futsal Titles during the September holidays. The boysrepresented the region with great pride, while Jai Taylor, FlynnHack and Sam Klower all earnt selection in the Australian Futsalteam to travel to Taiwan. Well done to all involved.

Hockey sisters Jessica and Ebonee Moffat continue to flourishon the hockey field. The girls recently played in a nationaltournament in Sydney. Ebonee will gain a lot from her firstnational championship, whilst Jessica shined as equal top goalscorer for her team with 5 goals. She was awarded a HockeyAustralia award by her coach for Most Consistent Player of herteam.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGYThis term, Year 9 ICT have been studying computer animationand learning how to use Adobe Flash. We have studied howto use key frames and animation script. This allows us to addbehaviours to our animations which makes them interactivewith the user. Our efforts are culminating with each studentcreating an interactive animated “Choose Your Own” adventurestory. All students are really enjoying themselves immensely!

The Year 10 ITS class have been studying multimedia designprinciples, in particular, what makes an effective website andwhat makes a not so effective website. Students are nowdesigning their own websites.

Year 11 IPT, after having studied visual basic last term, (aprogramming language), are now developing a computer gameof their own. They are enjoying this activity. Students areworking in groups to design and develop games such asSnakes and Ladders, Black Jack, Connect Four or BattleShips.Students are having to adjust their perception of the rules to fitin with computer logic.

It is a very exciting end to the year!

LOVE BITES PROGRAMA large number of Year 10 students recently attended an all-day‘Love Bites’ program which was facilitated by our school basedpolice officer, Kelly Knight.

The aim of the program was to give students an understandingand awareness of domestic and family violence and sexualassault. It also provided students with strategies on how toavoid issues in their own relationships, and how to supporttheir friends in their relationships. Most importantly, the programhighlighted that we can all make choices around behaviours inrelationships.

In the final session, students demonstrated what they’d learntby creating posters of their thoughts and views on domesticand family violence and sexual assault. These posters are ondisplay in the library.

GLADSTONE SCIENCE AND MATHSCHALLENGE

Early Friday 16 October, Mr Atkinson and four keen Year 10students: Sarah Coker, Steven Kyriazis, Corey Edmonds andFelicity Finlayson, departed for one eventful weekend at the2015 Gladstone Science and Maths Challenge. Held at CentralQueensland University, the three days involved lectures andcareer talks from various fields; team activities and aproblem-based learning projects for groups of approximatelyseven students and their mentors. There were five differentprojects, some of which involved tracking the Sun’s light, orthe brightest light in a room, with a solar panel; designing asustainable house; and researching ways in which to improvethe performance of a solar concentrator. At the end of thethree days, each group presented their project to a theatre ofparents, teachers, principals, industry reps and fellow students. All students would agree that the weekend was fun, educationaland a different way of learning and using the things learnt in theclassroom. In preparation for University, students even had thechance to practice their waitressing skills!

Thank you very much Mr Atkinson for giving up your weekendto provide such a great opportunity for anyone looking towardsa career in Science, Maths or Engineering.
