Georgia was the lead singer of The Peas-ants when they won Rockquest in 2011 while Caleb played guitar the year prior when the band was called The Peasants of Eden and finished second at the national final. While the group had been performing to-gether well before entering the secondary school music competition, Glen believes Smokefreerockquest gave them encour-agement to keep going. “That’s probably the key. There are other musicians of a similar ilk but these guys have really stuck at it. They certainly had the talent, they got an opportunity and it looks like now they’ve got the ink signed on the paper.”Broods aren’t the first New Zealand art-ists to sign with an international record company, but Glenn says it certainly isn’t

common. “I think Anika [Moa] signed straight overseas. It’s not ground breaking but it’s not usual. Either way I think this is a re-ally strong, positive step for them and I think they’ve got the goods to back this up. They’re not a one trick pony, they’ve got a number of strong songs and from what I gather there’s a lot more still to come.”When The Peasants won Rockquest in 2011 they worked with Joel who produced their only single “Letting Go” as part of the first place prize.

“I would like to think that has been helpful and our links with Joel go back a long way to when he was a competitor himself in 1999-2000.”Garin College prin-cipal John Boyce was unaware that the Notts, who are now based in Auckland, had signed an inter-national record deal at the time of calling, but labelled it “enor-

mous” and a “very big deal” when he was told. “That’s wonderful,” he says.John described Caleb as an “all-rounder” when he was at school. “He was into sport and he was always a great guitarist. “He’s a

good accompanist but he’s also quite idi-osyncratic and he really focuses, he was a hard playing guitarist and he listens well and I think people enjoy singing with them. At school he was an all rounder.”And while Georgia “played sport and things”, she was much more focused on her music and drama, John says. “She was into the arts and threw herself into it. She was also one of our school captains last year.”Music teacher Kyle Proffit, who managed The Peasants, had not spoken to Georgia and Caleb since signing the record deal, but he was well aware of its significance. “If you see how many New Zealand bands have been signed to Capitol Records then you’d realise this is a big deal. This is a very big contract for these kids eh,” he says. Other than an EP and album release, de-tails on the record deal have been kept quiet.

A parking problem outside Richmond Kindergarten should be resolved this week when the Tasman District Council erects five new time limit signs outside the kindy on Florence St.Teachers and parents at the kindy on the corner of Eliza-beth and Florence streets have been walking up to 300 metres, often carrying young children in car seats, to the kindy because all the car parks have been taken. The lack of car parking becomes an issue leading up to every Christmas when staff at the Richmond Mall are instructed to vacate the mall car park so that it is freed up for customers.Kindy parent Melinda Baigent says the lack of car parking is not just an inconvenience. It is also creates a safety issue and that needs to be resolved. “I pick my two children up at 2.45pm and I’ll have to park 200 metres away. It’s really dif-ficult for me but it’s worse for parents who have to drop off one child and have another sleeping in the car.“Usually they’d just park right outside and quickly take their children into the kindy and leave the other one sleeping but they can’t do that if they have to walk 200 metres. “We are also concerned about

the safety of parents with young children crossing the road be-cause visibility is restricted by all the cars. It’s turned it into a narrow one-way street.”Teacher Kate Westrupp says she’s especially worried about all the grandparents who bring children into the kindy. “We have quite a few grand-parents dropping off and picking up children and they might have to walk the length of Elizabeth St carrying young children in car seats,” she says. Kate says they have spoken to the Richmond Mall and Tas-man District Council about the problem and this week council transportation engineer Steve Elkington confirmed five new P10 signs are going up outside the kindy on Florence St.“We met with the kindy about a month ago and issued con-

tracts for the road marking and signs. The road marking has been completed and the signs should go up today,” Steve said on Tuesday.Steve says they will monitor how the new parking restric-tions work and modify the time limits if required.Mall manager Belinda de Cler-cq says it is mall policy to ask their retailers to park outside the mall car park every De-cember when space was at a premium. Belinda says she sympathises with the kindergarten and hopes that installing 10 minute car parks will resolve the prob-lem“We acknowledge that it is a frustration for them but I have so many customers complain-ing about the lack of car parks at this time of year,” she says.

The most successful Super Rugby team in history is coming to town and it may be the start of more to come. The Crusaders are in talks with the Tas-man Rugby Union to bring two of its Su-per Rugby games to Nelson in 2015. But first, organisers are hoping for a sell-out at Sportspark Motueka on Friday, Feb-ruary 7 when the Crusaders host their southern rivals, the Highlanders.Tickets are now on sale for the biggest rugby game to hit the region this sum-mer as both teams will bring their entire squad to the region – including close to 20 All Blacks.Tickets went on sale on Monday but the game is expected to be a sell-out and tickets to the covered stand are already close to sold. Tasman Rugby Union CEO Tony Lew-is says the game is a great opportunity for the region to show its support for the sport and encourage the Crusaders to bring more games here in 2015. “It’s absolutely crucial we get a huge crowd. They have two games that they have to take away from Christchurch because of the FIFA Under 20 World Cup and we

don’t want them to even consider any-one else.”One of the men who helped bring the game to the region, Shane Drummond, says he’s looking forward to a huge day. “This is the third pre season game we’ve got to Mot and at the first one we had 10,000 people. Because Waitangi Day is the day before we’re hoping it will en-courage people from out of town to take the day off in between and make a long

weekend of it. But the 5.30pm kick off means locals can still work and come to the game.”Tickets are selling for as little as $15 and are available from Nelson School of Mu-sic, Theatre Royal, Nelson i-Site, New World Nelson, Richmond Mall, Hamp-den Hotel Murchison or online at www.makos.co.nz or phone TicketDirect on 0800 224 224 and would make a great Christmas present, says Shane.

The Waimea River has been given the all clear after it was surveyed for toxic blue green algae although Tasman District Council staff will continue monitoring for the district's waterways for the algae which reached dangerous levels last summer. The council has been testing water quality weekly in a number of rivers around the district and so far it has found no signs of the algae which produces toxins that are poisonous to dogs and humans. But resource scientist Trevor James says they have been extra careful about moni-toring the sites for the algae after it was found in the Maitai River in Nelson late

last month.Nelson City Council issued a warning advising people to keep out of the lower Maitai River after the algae was found in high levels. The algae was found from the Maitai Mo-tor Camp downstream meaning that many of the Maitai's popular swimming holes will be out of bounds. Trevor says the algae usually only reached dangerous levels during periods of low flow in the summer so it was unusual to be found in high concentrations in the Maitai in November. He says Cawthron Institute scientist Susie

Wood is working to find out what is caus-ing the algae to bloom and why it has hap-pened earlier in the Maitai this year. “We are not sure what is causing it to grow and why it is only found in some rivers. It could be something to do with the fact that the Maitai and Waimea rivers have dams which changes the flow but that's just a hy-pothesis.”The algae, which is black or dark brown

and has a musky smell, represents a very real danger and Trevor says the council will be diligent about monitoring sites on the district's rivers. Last year a dog died af-ter eating the algae in the lower reaches of the Waimea River. “We looked at the Waimea last Tuesday and the levels were very low so it's not a problem yet. We have integrated the sur-veys with our water quality testing at swimming sites so we'll be doing it weekly and then twice weekly over Christmas and into January and February.” Sites on the Motueka, Lee, Roding, Wairoa and Takaka rivers were also clear, he says.

FOOTPATH SET FOR TIDY UP: The pavement on Queen St outside the new Gibbons development will be tidied up within a week, about the same time the new roundabout is expected to be fully com-pleted. Tasman District Council and Gibbons had been working on the road in a joint project to allow for a new entrance in the development complex. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

A study of contamination from anti-fouling paints at boat slipways and hard stands around the Tasman district shows that some sites are so badly polluted that concentrations of toxic metals are over 100 times higher than national safety guide-lines, posing a serious risk to the marine environment and boaties. A report to the council last month identified a number of sites where there were unsafe levels of contami-nants from anti-fouling paints that are used on boats to inhibit marine growth on the hulls. Anti-fouling paint contains a num-ber of toxic metals including zinc and copper as well as biocides to kill marine life and these have been accumulating in the sediments at slipways and boat hard stands around the district. A preliminary study conducted this year with funding assistance from the Ministry of the Environ-ment showed that the commercial slipways and boat hardstands at Port Motueka and Waitapu, near Takaka, were the two most heavily contaminated sites. The council’s resource scientist Paul Sheldon says that some parts of the site at Port Motueka were so badly

contaminated that copper concen-trations of 76,000 parts per mil-lion, or 7.6 per cent were recorded. The national guidelines state that anything over 270 parts per million will impact on the environment. “That’s gross contamination - it’s way over the safety guidelines,” Paul says.Paul says the key concern is that the high levels of contamination could be harming the marine environ-ment. The contaminants also po-tentially pose a health risk to boat-ies frequenting those sites.Chairman of the Environment and Planning committee Stu Bry-ant says he is also concerned about the contamination and the council needs to work with the boat and facility owners to try to resolve the problem. Stu says remedial work to clean-up polluted sites and preventing further pollution at slipways are the key issues although the biggest problem could be deciding who pays for it, ratepayers or users.Stu says he is pleased the council is addressing the issue. TDC is waiting for a further report next year, which will include sug-gested options, before acting.

There won’t be any Christmas lights shining from Bob Peters’ place on River Terrace this year. He’s pulled the plug after 12 years.Bob was a regular entrant in the Light Up Nelson competition, which he won in 2007, and was well known for dressing up as Santa Claus and sitting outside with his cat while people wan-dered through his property over the festive period. He admits it will be a quieter Decem-ber and he may even get a chance to check out the other houses this year, but it was the time consuming effort of putting up 36,000 lights over six weeks that spelled an end to his hobby. “Christmas will be a lot different this year, hell yeah,” he says. “It will be a lot quieter. I just want to thank everyone who came out and let them know I’ve finished.”It was a holiday to the United States which birthed Bob’s passion for Christ-mas lights. “I saw all these Christmas lights and there was a sale on at Kmart so I bought a whole lot and shipped them back and that got me going. It started off with a few icicle lights and went from there.”Bob reckons he spent $7000 all up on

Christmas lights and power points but says the power bill wasn’t exces-sive during December, “only about $40 more”. “I never looked at the power bill and

said ‘ouch’.”He currently had his Christmas lights on sale in the Buy, Sell, Swap and says a garage sale would be held to sell off the rest.

First Years Richmond said goodbye to a long serving staff member last week when Marion Brooks retired. She’s spent 25 years at the hub of the early childhood centre in a varied role as an office administrator, secretary to the Board of Trustees, and go to person for both children and adults as the years have gone by.Marion says it’s only when she looks back over her time spent at the centre that she realises how far she’s come.“In the very early days when I started work at the centre it was known as Richmond Community Childcare Cen-tre Inc. All of the office work was done manually, even the cash book was hand written along with all of the accounts for fees.” She says she was very anxious when the first computer was purchased and she “had to learn to work the thing”. “I was completely computer illiterate and had never turned on a computer let alone worked on one. Gradually every-thing was computerised and it was like having a new job.”Marion says she stayed on at the centre for so long because of her passion for the children she met there.“Being involved in the lives of so many children and their parents over the

years has been very rewarding. Every day is different.I will really miss the children and their parents and the team.”While she has stayed at First Years for a long time, Marion says she’s kept a close eye outside the centre to see what her ex pupils have gone on to do and has enjoyed quietly watching their success-es from the sidelines. “I have enjoyed reading in the paper about children who have gone on to excel at sport and academically. Children come to us for work experience from all of the local schools, some of who used to attend.”

Marion says her longevity in the role is also a credit to “a very special person”, the late Gillian Perkins, who had a ma-jor influence on her understanding of early childhood education.”For centre manager Karina Rasmus-sen the end of Marion’s 25 year career is bittersweet but she says her legacy will still stay on at the centre. “We have worked closely together and she will be sorely missed. She is so capable, confi-dent, happy and cheerful with the chil-dren. Every day you could guarantee someone would be at her door holding something to be sewn or mended.”

He was the Brightwater born physicist who split the atom and became known as the father of nuclear physics. And if one local man gets his way, we’ll be honouring Ernest Rutherford with a recognised day of remembrance next year.Tony Flewellen has set August 30, 2014 – the anniversary of Ernest Rutherford’s birth – in his sights as the first ever Ru-therford Day. He says his passion for science, particularly the philosophy of science combined with the recent read-ing of a biography of Rutherford has spurred him on to create the day of rec-ognition.“After coming to understand what an amazing bloke he was I thought it was only right that perhaps we honoured Rutherford in the same way he chose to honour us. When he was elevated to the peerage he took the name quite proudly, Baron Rutherford of Nelson, he had a lot of choices open to him but he chose Nelson and I think it is prob-ably time to return that compliment.”He says despite place names and me-morials around Nelson, more could be done to remember Rutherford and his achievements and that’s been the motivation behind pushing a special anniversary day. “There’s place names around the place and most of us are familiar with Rutherford house and

Rutherford St, but I think there is prob-ably a whole generation of Nelsonians now who’ve grown up not really know-ing the full story behind those names.”He says while the idea is in the very early stages of planning, he’s got plenty of ideas about what the day could po-tentially be for Nelson. “It’s in gestation at the moment but it has the potential to be a lot of things. I would like first and foremost for it to be a day where we honour Rutherford’s memory. Sec-

ondly it is a chance for us all to focus on the sciences in our region and the way they contribute to our economy because it’s a huge part of what we are in Nelson. And it could also be a chance to honour some of the academic work that goes on.” He says he is hopeful that the community will get behind it and encourages the public to support the idea. “August 30 next year will be the inaugural Rutherford Day – I’m quite sure of it.”

with Sinead OgilvieWednesday November 27The Tasman Visual Art Group's fifth annual sum-mer exhibition attracted a great crowd two week-ends ago who ended up voting for Betty Salter to win the People's Choice award. Betty's large oil painting 'Aoraki Sunrise' was the winning piece and the relatively new group member says she was thrilled to take home the accolade.

Wednesday November 27The 41 local Special Olympics Nelson athletes who attended the National Summer Games in Dunedin two weeks ago did the region proud bringing home a range of medals across the many different events. Coordinator Lois Aitken-head says she was thrilled that nearly everyone achieved personal bests while at the games. De-spite being up against 1200 entrants from all over the country the group took home 21 gold med-als, 25 silver medals, 13 bronze medals, 12 fourth placings and 21 fifth placings.

Wednesday October 25The youth group Detonate Youth have raised the funds they need to get to the Phillipines after ap-pearing in the Waimea Weekly and are set to fly out on their volunteer mission on December 28. Their plans have changed slightly however fol-lowing the devastating typhoon which passed over the village they were heading for. They ex-pect that tens of thousands of refugees from the disaster will be at the village, so while they will still visit their sponsor child, they will also volun-teer their time anywhere that is needed.

Members of the Grace Church have gone about spreading the Christmas love by making shortbread, distribut-ing it to homes around Richmond, building a UV nativity scene and erecting a giant star above the hills of Richmond.Ken Polglase believes the “real mean-ing of Christmas” was being lost from the community, so as a church, they decided to “refocus” the community towards the birth of Jesus Christ. “We’ve done a number of things like the shortbread with a card attached to as many letterboxes as we can in Richmond,” he says. “The whole fo-cus is putting the focus back on Je-sus.”About 9500 pieces of shortbread had been baked over the past few weeks with 50 members of the church help-ing out in teams. “Initially we were going to make them star shaped but logistically it became too difficult but they’ve got a star imprinted. Groups are marking off streets and taking them around. It’s very much been a team effort with different people do-ing different things.”The eight meter high star was set up on Saturday night and will be up un-til Christmas Eve. It is visible from Richmond, and can be seen above Champion Rd. “We just want to lift the awareness in the community that it’s not just about Santa Claus and that there is a real significance.”

Richmond accountant Ross Stevenson has taken time out from his day job to write two children’s books which he has just published.Ross has written “a bit of poetry over the years” and when he had some spare time on his hands last year decided to write a book. The end result were two children’s fiction books with an animal theme, Herbert The Hound Dog and Freddie The Ferret which have been published by US-based print-on-demand publisher Xlibris.Ross says his first book, Herbert The Hound Dog, is about the adventures of a young hound dog who dreams about becoming a tracker. Freddie The Ferret also features Herbert as the young hound dog tries to prove himself by tracking down the cunning ferret. Both books are illustrated by Raynald Kudemas . Although Ross is a keen part-time poet he says he never thought about writing a book until last year when he was taking care of his ill wife Lynn. “My wife had a stroke and I stayed at home with her and that’s when I started writing,” Ross says. “It all happened by accident really.” When Ross finished Herbert The Hound Dog he decided to submit his work to a discerning critic and was thrilled when it came back with a rave review.“I gave the manuscript to one of my colleagues

to read to their three-year-old son,” Ross says. “He really liked it so I thought I’d take the next step and publish it.”Ross says the two books aren’t the only stories with a happy ending with his wife making a good recovery from her illness. Ross says he enjoyed writing the books so much he “hopes to write a few more”. He has 100 printed copies of each book which can be purchased for $25 by emailing Ross at [email protected]

Property Security while you are away

We are fortunate that we live in an area where petty theft is not rife, but we should not be complacent when it comes to our property security.

There are more people around over this period of time so it is important that you do think about the signals that your vacant property may give to an opportunist. Here are some suggestions to help deter thieves:

have your neighbour clear your mail box every day

put one or two lights on a timer, preferably the kitchen and an outside light

do not close your curtains, have your home looking like you are in residence

add a towing disabler to your trailer/boat

Tasman district councillor Judene Edgar knew it was going to be a challenge work-ing as a volunteer in remote villages in Natal but even she wasn’t prepared for the harshness of life in the South African hin-terland.Judene travelled about three hours north of Durban in the KwaZulu Natal province last month to team-up with medical staff and other volunteers at the Medical Out-reach HIV Education project. And it didn’t take long to experience the harsh reality of life in KwaZulu Natal having to care for a dying woman on her fourth day in the Aids ravaged region.“I had only been there four days when we went to a dwelling and there was a 20-year-old mother of two dying of meningitis. She was lying there rigid and foaming at the mouth and I had to lift her up and carry her to our vehicle to get her to the clinic. “I nursed her all the way to the clinic but when we got there she died 20 minutes lat-er. It was so sad, an emotional experience but at least her children didn’t have to see her die like that and I was privileged to at-tend her funeral a few days later.” Seeing the impact of Aids and starvation also made a big impression on Judene who says the suffering was far more widespread than she expected. “Thirty-seven per cent of pregnant moth-ers in KwaZulu Natal have Aids which is the highest rate in South Africa. I noticed that a lot of the homes we visited had grandparents looking after the children and that’s because a whole generation

has been wiped out by Aids. “So many of the people are malnourished as well. We weighed these full grown adults at the clinic and the heaviest was 55 kilograms. “There was also TB and diabetes every-where and they don’t have enough or fre-quently any clean water. I can understand the people over there don’t seem to be too worried about Aids when it’s just one of a number of things that will kill you.” But Judene says the thing that astounded her most was the gross inequality between the third world village and an Afrikaans township that was only six kilometres away. “The Afrikaans town had a nice su-permarket, a pub, service station and a doctor and yet just down the road you had a Zulu village with nothing in comparison. “The supermarket was a rundown shed and the medical facility was run by nurs-

es - they only saw a doctor once a month except that he hadn’t been there in Octo-ber or November. Most houses didn’t have electricity, water or sewerage. It shows that apartheid has only gone as a word in some parts of South Africa.” But Judene says working in KwaZulu Natal was also incredibly rewarding because she was able to conduct Aids education classes and provide some hands-on help repairing buildings damaged by a storm and cleaning and clothing young children. She also attended a council meeting which she says was “interesting”. “It was a really worthwhile and enriching experience going over there.”Judene was also able to deliver a full bag of dressings, tape, band-

ages, paracetamol, vitamins, thermome-ters, gloves, masks and even an opthalmo-scope to the Sipho Zungu Clinic in Khula. “When I handed them over they were so pleased. I couldn’t understand everything she said in Zulu but the words ‘wow, wow, wow’ were pretty clear. “These came from people and businesses at home so I really would like to thank them.”

Two of Waimea Intermediate's longest serving teachers Paul and Marina Bennett are retiring after spending 40 years in the edu-cation service in England and around New Zealand. Marina, who leads the school's year 8 syndicate, has been at Waimea Intermediate School for 24 years after starting teaching in Bristol and then migrating to New Zealand where she taught in Tokoroa and Karamea. Paul started his career in Birmingham in 1974 and had stints at Bristol, Otorohanga, Tokoroa, Karamea and Tapawera before joining Ma-rina at Waimea in 1993 where he is a deputy principal.Although the couple took a long time to get to Waimea Intermedi-ate with Paul returning to Eng-land after his first teaching ven-ture to New Zealand and Marina taking a year's leave to pursue a career as a professional musician, Paul says they definitely ended up in the right place. “Waimea Intermediate is a fan-tastic school,” Paul says. “We wouldn't have lasted in teaching if we hadn't come here.“It really cares about the kids and

it's based on values and people and not on national standards. The staff are great and the kids are getting better and better – it will be sad to leave.”In contrast, Paul says the first school he taught at was “a grey concrete jungle in Birmingham that relied on teaching by intimi-dation”. “I started teaching on Septem-ber 4, 1974 at a comprehensive school in Birmingham. The staff were very friendly but after three years I'd had enough and decided to migrate to New Zealand.“I taught at Otorohanga College for two years and that was a big culture shock. I had a form class that was all Maori and I couldn't pronounce any of their names. However those kids taught me so much about being a New Zea-lander including not to wear walk socks.”After returning to England and working as a primary school teacher in Bristol, Paul met Ma-rina and they migrated back to

New Zealand. Marina says they secured teaching jobs in Tokoroa and were considering a move back to England when they fell in love with Nelson.“We came out to New Zealand because it was the height of the cold war and Maggie Thatcher was putting nuclear missiles all over the place. There were some-thing like 52 first strike targets around Bristol where we were

living which was not great with a family of young kids," Marina says. “We loved teaching in Tokoroa – the kids were fantastic and the staff were great – but then we were holidaying in Nelson and just decided that was where they were going to live. We bought a house in Mahana and started ap-plying for jobs.”After teaching at Karamea, Ma-

rina and then Paul via Tapawera, got jobs at Waimea Intermediate and shifted into a house in the Aniseed Valley.Paul and Marina have witnessed a number of changes in the edu-cation system over the years but Paul says one of the best has been the introduction at Waimea of a behaviour and wellbeing plan which includes restorative prac-tice. He says that has taught the students to be responsible for their actions and as a result "the kids have just been getting better and better".“Under the old system of punish-ment all the kids learned was not to get caught next time. Now they have to face up to all the people they have affected and that teach-es them to treat everyone respect-fully.”Marina and Paul say they will miss the collegial staff and rela-tionships with the students but it is the right time to retire. Paul says he has lots of things he wants to do more of including travel-ling, gardening, and karate while Marina wants to run a marathon in a decent time and ride her horse more.

Travel the world with us

Here, there and everywhere!Between Tim, Vicky (and Nick behind the scenes), we’ve done a bit of travelling this year. It’s always great to be able to say to clients, "We’ve been there recently!"

This year between us we’ve checked out:

• Honolulu, Hawaii staying at the Hilton Waikiki Beach hotel, flying Hawaiian Airlines.

• Noumea, New Caledonia staying at Royal Tera hotel and flying Aircalin.

• Cape Town and the garden route, several game reserves and Johannesburg in South Africa, flying with Singapore Airlines.

• Havana, Cuba, and Machu Picchu in Peru, flying with Lan.

• Adelaide and the Clare Valley, with South Australian Tourism, flying Air New Zealand.

• Rarotonga flying with Air New Zealand.

• Perth, Western Australia, staying at the Four Points by Sheraton and flying Air New Zealand

• This month Tim and Nick are checking out the Sir Stamford Hotel in Circular Quay, Sydney and cruising back to NZ on Holland America Line's ship MS Oosterdam.

We don’t just sell travel, we get out there and do it!You’d expect your doctor to keep up-to-date with new treatments and medications, your lawyer to know about the latest changes to legislation, and your accountant to know all about the latest accounting rules and regulations. Likewise, it’s vitally important for travel professionals such as ourselves keep up-to-date with new products, destinations, tours, cruise ships, airline products and so much more!

Here at Harvey World Travel Richmond we’re committed to maintaining our ‘currency’, so here’s a little run-down on our professional development activities in 2013.

Harvey World Travel Richmond are also award winners! • Most Improved 2012/2013 – Intrepid Travel • Most Improved 2012/2013 – Total Holiday Options • Most Improved 2012/2013 – P&O/Princess Cruises • Tim Dunnill - Platinum Plus Award for Outstanding Success in Sales Revenue

Tim Dunnill and Vicky McLean

Havana, Cuba and PeruBack in October, Vicky got to check out a destination that is really a ‘bit off the map’ for most Kiwis – not too many have been to Cuba! Vicky tells us below about her experience.

Getting to Cuba isn’t entirely straight-forward, the options are limited, via South America or alternatively Canada. I flew with Lan airline via Santiago in Chile with a stop in Peru on the way.

I was fortunate to do a ‘Best of Cuba’ World Journeys tour which included the capital Havana, and on to the Unesco heritage-listed city of Trinidad. The World Journeys people were amazing and at times they worked miracles (such as producing a new bus when the air conditioning broke down).

Highlights included seeing the stunning and well-preserved Spanish colonial architecture and vintage American cars lovingly preserved. I got to soak up the atmosphere and see how the locals live, and the impact of Fidel Castro’s communist government since 1959. The locals still need government issued coupons to buy bread at designated stores.

Pleasant surprise of the trip was the variety and quality of the artworks for sale. I wish I had bought more art to bring home!

Cape Town and beyondIn September Nick had a first hand, first time experience of Cape Town, South Africa with Adventure World tours and Singapore Airlines. This is what Nick says about his experience;

I would definitely recommend South Africa as a holiday destination, particularly Cape Town and the surrounding areas.

Highlights included Table Mountain, Stellenbosch (very old and pretty) and the wine-lands area, and a visit to the Cape of Good Hope.

Included in the trip was three nights spent on two different game reserves (Sambona and Shamwari) seeing the wildlife. Seeing 4 of the ‘Big 5’ animals was an incredible experience.

A bit of advice if travelling to South Africa in early spring is – TAKE WARM CLOTHES!! It gets cold, really cold! Also, 3 nights is not enough!

My personal highlight was getting out of the jeep to walk through the African grassland savannah to take photos up-close and personal with two cheetahs!

My only regret was that we didn’t get more time to explore the towns of Knysna (a lot like Nelson) and Plettenburg.

It’s a busy time of year for Morrison Square and with so many exciting things happening around Nelson’s inner city shopping centre, it’s the perfect time to pay a visit. From the recent rebranding and renaming of the en-tire centre, the busy lead up to Christmas,

summer fashion, new retailers and the cel-ebration of the centre’s sixth birthday, there’s plenty to see and do at Morrison Square. You’ll find more than 26 of the best fashion and lifestyle stores in Nelson at Morrison Square and there’s never been a better rea-

son to shop there. After six years in the heart of Nelson’s CBD, Morrison Square has come into its own and is now a regular, must see destination when it comes to ticking off the shop-ping list says centre manager Nona Jackson.“After listening to our customers and really taking on board what they had to say, the rebranding of the centre to

Morrison Square has been a huge success. The new colour scheme, name and logo re-ally reflects what is iconic to Nelson, where we are geographically but also the atmos-phere and feel to the centre.”The sixth birthday was a huge milestone for

the centre and says a lot about the steady increase in popularity the centre has had to become the hub it is today. The specialty fashion stores within the cen-tre showcase the hottest trends each season and the excitement of Christmas has well and truly arrived, along with new season styles to match. The retail-ers are unpacking their summer stock, things are busier than ever and it’s only going to get better in

the lead up to Christmas.Customers can expect a traditional Christ-mas at Morrison Square this year, complete with decorations, trees, free gift wrapping and of course Santa Claus. With such a fan-tastic Christmas atmosphere anyone doing their shopping is encouraged to bring the kids to see Santa while you start ticking off the Christmas list. There will also be a late night shopping opportunity with the centre

Gordon Max, the eldest son of for-mer All Black Donald Max, died last month, age 89, after a short ill-ness.Born at the Brightwater Nursing home on February 17 1924, Gordon attended Hope School and Nelson College before eventually leaving at the age of 14 to work on the family farmGordon continued to live a ru-ral lifestyle, working as a farmer throughout his life before retiring in the 90s. He spent his spare time

hunting and with his wife Natalie and their family. Gordon’s funeral was held at the Brightwater Memorial Hall on Monday with his family, church, community and Nelson Deer Stalk-er’s Association paying tribute to the man.He is survived by his five children; Judy, Cathy, Debbie, Laurence and Jonny, 11 grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and his sister Helen Max. Wife Natalie passed away two and a half years ago.

being open till 7pm on December 20.While Christmas shopping is a huge drawcard for the centre, the lure of Boxing Day and sum-mer sales will also keep Morrison Square buzz-ing well into the first months of the New Year. The return of Jazz Fest after an incredi-bly popular event last year will see three days start-ing from the first of January of daily lunchtime jazz be-tween 12 noon and 2pm. There will be plenty of seat-ing and shade and a festival atmos-phere.The summer holi-days will also see the arrival of two new eateries, which will complement the other food destina-tions already at Morrison Square. The addition of these two new food destinations reflects the boost in growth the centre is having and makes for great variety for customers.Adding to the diversity has been the Wednes-day Farmers Market that takes over the centre

car park each week. It’s well and truly taken off and Nona says she is open to talking to mem-bers of the community who have a great idea for an event at the centre. “The layout of the centre

really lends itself to outdoor enter-

tainment, so anyone who is hosting an event or has a great idea for the oc-casional use of that space is welcome to contact me, that includes buskers too.”

There couldn’t be more to cel-

ebrate at Morrison Square this Christmas. Come and see why the centre, now in its sixth year has grown to become a regular fixture on Nelson’s shopping trail. Enjoy Christmas shopping at a one stop destination for the whole family and make the most of the new retailers due to open there soon.

The organisers of a fun day to raise funds for disaster relief in the Philippines have been over-whelmed by the support and gen-erosity they are receiving from the Nelson-Tasman community.Helping Hands Nelson have or-ganised the community fun day at Auckland Point School this Sunday (Dec 15) to raise funds for victims of the earthquake and tsunami that devastated the Philippines earlier this year. The group has been asking people

for help and two of its members, Philippine woman Juliet Barton and her step-daughter Ariel, say the response to their request has invariably been ‘yes’.“Our budget is zero so we are re-ally grateful for all the support we are getting,” Juliet says. “All the people we have asked to help have said yes.“All the entertainers are perform-ing for free and everyone is do-nating their time. It shows Nelson may be a small town but it has a

big heart.”Ariel says the entertainment will include live music from Paul

Ubana Jones, Trudi Wilson, Paul Madsen and Papercity. There will also be food stalls, spot prizes, games, bouncy castles, a team of huskies and miniature horses. Juliet says the earthquake and ty-phoon devastated the Philippines and she is so happy she has had an opportunity to help out. “It has been terrible. Thank-fully my parents and family over there are fine although my par-ents’ house was destroyed by the earthquake and then hit again the

typhoon.” Ariel says there will also be a fundraising performance from Bryce Wastney and Steve Mitch-ell in the Bel-Aire Tavern in Ta-hunanui starting at 7.30pm this Sunday. An art auction at the Tahunanui Community Centre was also planned for March with proceeds from all the fundraising events going to World Vision and Red Cross. The fun day will be at Auckland Point School from 10am to 4pm.

Thanks for article:Thanks for attending the Let’s Wheel the Wheels inaugural event.

Hopefully it was a small insight into the world of the disabled in Nelson. Thanks also for the small article in Waimea Weekly. It is factually correct - and the accompany-ing photo is delightful. Shala is happy with both! Given good weather again next year, it is hoped that it will be a slightly larger event. Thanks again, Christine Chapman.

I was a bit disappointed that Santa turned off and didn’t come past us.

Santa was gonna come past us but NO! He stopped and didn’t come any further. Lucky the rest of the parade was ok cause Santa sucked. Natasha Columbus.

Thought it was a great parade, even the sun came out on time.

bish dropped up the street! Santa’s helpers were doing a great job picking up after eve-

ryone!!! They were the stars of the day!!! Janelle Thorpe.

Waimea Village sold to residents:As a sister of one of the home owners in Waimea Village. I was

so pleased to see the story on page 1 this week. Yippee! They have bought the shares in the land. What a nightmare for the past 2 to 3 years. We are Scottish and I just want to say most of us Scots have good, honest, generous hearts. Mall car parking creates debate:Look, think and use your brain. Thats all it takes. Terry Beach.

Why not take the line out of the middle and make them parks

for people with trailers or with big mo-

torhomes?? Claire Baird.

Weird, should have allocated them to staff. Carmyn Hunt.

Calculated mistake. Aaron Mallinson.

Cop shop is going anyway isnt it? Amy Hall.

Some do this in town and for business it works great espe-

cially for the ones swapping shifts. Aimee May.

In attempting to explain the very strange parking format

at Richmond Mall, the manager rath-er conveniently omits to mention she has issued a blanket ‘no parking in mall parking areas’ for all staff at the mall up until Christmas, result-ing in congestion in local residential streets. So these parks would like what they are - a classic blunder and a total waste of space. Incidentally, when approached re-garding local streets used for default parking by mall staff, Ms de Clerq did not appear at all concerned about the inconvenience to residents. Tas-man District Council were equally disinterested.D Shaw.

A story on page 6 of today’s Weekly shows the council is doing something about the crowded parking on the streets surrounding the mall and its manager clearly has no ju-risdiction in the streets outside the mall. Ed.

With Christmas fast approaching people are thinking about what they will serve up over the fes-tive season. We have visited a few of the local businesses who can help make sure your celebrations, Christmas dinners and summer barbecues are just delicious.

Stock up for the silly season at Su-per Liquor, where there’s always an excuse to celebrate. Your local Richmond Super Liquor offer the best range of beer, wine and spir-its at the best price. With a variety of drinks to cater to any gift idea or Christmas occasion, there is always something for everybody’s taste and to quench everyone’s thirst. There is a great selection of products to choose from that will hit the spot, try bubbles for Mum, beers for Dad, perhaps a sherry for Nan and a tipple of the top shelf stuff for Pop. If you are entertaining you can expect the friendly team to go the extra

mile to help you cater to a crowd. They will help you choose the right drinks for your celebrations, working in with your budget and tastes. Shopping for that special someone that has everything? Try a Super Liquor gift voucher this Christmas.

Tasman Bay Berries is now open in McShane Road and if you are looking to spend some quality time with family and friends, why not head out and pick some ber-ries? They have boysenberries and raspberries ripe and ready. You can pick your own or buy freshly packed or frozen. Blueberries and strawberries are also available with cherries coming in soon. Berryfruit are both delicious and healthy, and if they aren’t eaten on the trip home they can be fro-zen to enjoy throughout the year. Maree and Glen Holland are still growing berries locally in their Paton Rd blocks and this year

opened their shop in McShane Rd. The new retail outlet is close to town and more convenient for those looking to have fresh ber-ries on the menu these holidays. It’s the perfect place to relax under the sunshades, enjoy your fresh berries and cool off with a cold drink or a delicious fresh fruit icecream.

The Chook Farm owners, Paul and Julie Jones, are excited to be open-ing their iconic retail store for the summer holiday period. They’ve got some great opening specials and with access to over 3000 lines you will be able to find all sorts of culinary delights to treat your family and friends. Check out their discount prices on bulk buys, party goods, catering items and factory seconds. There’s the ever popular unbaked croissants, prawns, seafood, sausages, bacon, salami, free range eggs, cakes, nuts, dried fruit, crumbed cam-

embert and bulk cheeses, pie shells and tart cases, meringues, dry goods for baking, sauces, soft drinks and sweets – the list goes on! Make the most of the savings and selection. Call in and see Leah, the Chook Farm Chick at the Chook Farm in McShane Road, Richmond. You know where it is! Great products. Great prices.

Berrylands, on the Appleby High-way, is owned by second genera-tion market gardeners, Pete and Steph Kristofski. They opened for their fourth season at Berrylands last week and are all geared up for another busy season. Theirs is a popular destination, not only to pick your own raspberries, straw-berries and boysenberries but also to stock up on the freshest season-al vegetables and locally grown cherries. Make sure you try out a real fruit icecream or smoothie (also available dairy free) or one

of their new refreshing sorbets which will be available from next week. Pete’s been out harvesting his freshly dug new potatoes and they are ready now together with a huge variety of seasonal vegeta-bles. Pete grows most of his own produce and what he doesn’t grow himself, he sources from other local farmers to ensure they are fresh and at their best. Keep an eye out for their fresh corn, gi-ant watermelons and rockmelons which should hit the shelves in late January.

The Chook Farm is reo-pening this week! Paul and Leah are offering some f a n t a s t i c opening spe-cials so hurry in!

Volunteers get ‘thank you’“Without you guys we wouldn’t be able to function”, Red Cross Nelson service coordinator Amy Wilson told the vol-unteers.All of the 325 Red Cross volunteers and members were invited to the Nelson Golf Club on Friday for a Christmas afternoon tea, a thank you for all their work over the year.Volunteers help out Red Cross in a vari-ety of ways including meals on wheels, community transport, community visi-

tors service, knitting group, response team, youth programs and working in one of the three shops. “We want to show people still care,” president Max Clarke says. Red Cross has active volunteers that have been involved for 50 years, and as part of the “thank you” afternoon tea, the organisation recognised the volun-teers that had reached significant ser-vice milestones, including six who had reached 20 years.

One of those was Richmond woman Maryann Anderson who has done the same Meals on Wheels run ever since moving to the region. “I’ve just contin-ued doing it, one day a week,” Maryann says.Maryann says she has enjoyed every moment of the 20 years spent volun-teering for Red Cross and while she admits she might not be able to reach another 20 years, she “hopes to do it a bit longer yet”.

Red Cross volunteers Gladys Borlase, Maryann Anderson and Hamish Dawson were recognised for their services, at an afternoon tea on Friday. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

The Village Café on Queen St is gear-ing up for Christmas and the team wants you to celebrate with them.Time sure does fly when you are hav-ing fun; it’s been a busy year for own-er Amber Warren who took over the local business just under two years ago. She’s completely revamped the menu, has livened up the café with her fresh ideas, great energy and has an awesome team to round it all out. While the Village Café offers old

fashioned kiwi classics, Amber has added a great twist to the menu that now caters to any taste. Her home-made food that is prepared onsite daily has well and truly hit the mark with locals who love having a wide variety of sweet and savoury treats to choose from. When it comes to stepping out of the hustle and bustle for morning tea, lunch or afternoon tea, you can’t beat Village Café. Located on the main

street just a few steps down from the mall, cus-tomers love the fact they can duck out of the busy CBD and relax in a more laidback environment says Amber. “Our customers love coming some-where that is quieter, with a choice of sitting inside or in the outdoor area.”A major point of difference has also been the fact that the café opens at 6am, which is one of the only places in town to do so, allowing early birds to still

be able to grab a great coffee fix. “As far as I am aware we are one of the only ones around that open at that time, so it’s really convenient for our customers to swing by on their way to work.”Alongside award winning coffee, yummy cakes, tasty scones, savour-ies, sandwiches and great cabinet food, locals will be able to sample the new summer menu that Amber has introduced, featuring delicious pani-ni’s that have already proven to be in-credibly popular. The specials board is also taking off and with access to fresh whitebait Amber is introducing ‘Whitebait Fritter Friday’. The special day is this Friday and she urges locals to get into the café while the season’s catch is still in stock. “We have a great source of fresh whitebait so we will be making the most of it through our new ‘Fritter Friday’. Come in this Fri-day and order fresh whitebait fritters, made on site.”Another new feature on the menu is the Madbeat Milkshake, which Am-ber specifically designed for the local dancers who use the upstairs studio each week. She says she often gets the dancers coming in prior to their les-

sons and wanted to supply them with something special. “At just $2 a milk-shake it’s a nice treat before or after a lesson. There’s also plenty of space for mum or dad to sit down and relax and enjoy a coffee or tea while they wait for the kids to finish dancing.”With the end of the year looming, it’s also the perfect time to get your Christmas party and BBQ cater-ing requests in to the Village Café. Amber has become somewhat fa-mous for her delicious range of sal-ads which make catering to a crowd a lot easier. Whether it is morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea or a group get together she is more than happy to supply salads to any number of people. “We are really expanding the catering side of things and welcome all enquiries, there is no function too small or too large, we will do it all.”With a new summer menu, function catering and ‘Whitebait Fritter Fri-day’ to look forward to, visit the Vil-lage Café and taste for yourself why this local business is taking off. Am-ber and the friendly team welcome enquiries for Christmas parties or BBQ’s and are happy to take orders in advance.

What’s new in Tech and Sound

We are now in the final month of the year, and you know what that means – Christmas. We grow up with the expectation that Christ-mas is about joy, family, giving, summer, a break from school or work, and if you grew up going to a church, the birth of Jesus. However, Christmas time can often be a month of stress, worry and even anxiety. We may have family coming to visit, which can sometimes be more stressful than enjoyable. Or we may be travelling to see family, and the business of making travel plans can often but stressful as well. If you work, there is often a high expec-tation put on you over the holidays to work longer and harder due to the holiday rush and business. Christmas time can also mean a break from work, which only means more stress because you need to wrap up projects before the end of the year so you put in long and hard hours be-fore you take time off for the holidays. If you’re a student you might be stressing about your end of the year exams and papers. If you’re a parent that usually sends their kids to school every day, you now have kids around you 24/7 which can leave you feeling weary and anxious. Maybe you are looking at your bank account and you’re worried about how you’re going to make it this year to meet the expectations of Christmas presents. Maybe you recently lost a loved one and you’re anxious because it’s a reminder of that person not being around any-more. I’m not trying to take the joy out of Christ-mas – on the contrary. We sometimes are so desperate to enjoy life but fear and anxiety are the thieves that creep in and rob us of our joy. Christmas is only an example of this and I’m sure there are plenty of things in your life that cause you to be fearful and worry: the future; relationships; work; family; money – we could go on and on. If you are human you probably struggle with some sort of fear and anxiety, but there is hope. Do you know how many times the phrase “do not be afraid” comes up in the bible? 365 times. That’s one for every day. And do you know why we do not need to worry or be afraid? One of the 365 phrases says it well: “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10). We don’t need to worry because Jesus is alive today and he is with us. Though we celebrate his birth during the Christmas holidays, we also celebrate his death during Easter because we know that he rose from the dead, and we can have access to him every day. All you need to do is give over your fear and anxiety to him and stop trying to do it all by yourself, because the truth is, you can’t!

Have a Merry Christmas, Nick Ippolito, Hope Community Church.

RICHMOND COMMUNITY PATROL

A group of keen volunteers are the extra eyes and ears of the Richmond Police, keeping our community safe from harm and their presence on our streets has made all the difference. It has now been more than five years since the dedicated group began patrolling the streets of Rich-mond and they have never been more appreciated. The patrol’s visible presence around town has helped to re-duce the levels of disorder evi-dent from earlier years, such as graffiti, damaged properties and generally unappreciated night-time behavior which inspired the group to inception. The volun-teers now spend their Friday and Saturday nights out on patrol, sharing a close relationship with our police, council and commu-nity to keep the streets clear of unwanted crime.Mike Gill, coordinator for the Richmond Community Patrol group says that in the last year, his volunteers have successfully dealt with insecure buildings, assaults, willful damage and similar sce-narios while providing essential support to the community. “We have also assisted the police on the ground by providing cordons and at various local community events where extra feet on the

ground are needed.”The community has seen a defi-nite drop in the levels of crime occurring in the wee hours of the weekend, a result of the efforts of the community patrol and the great support the community show for each other in deterring night life crime. Working with the NZ Police, schools, families and local businesses to patrol known trouble spots, patrollers are well trained and the safety of volunteers is of the highest prior-ity.Community constable Glyn Cunningham says he can’t speak highly enough of the patrol group and he’s in no doubt that they have played a huge role in pre-venting crime in the area. “The patrol is lead by a very enthusias-tic leader who is very proactive. We find them extremely valuable to the community. They defi-nitely assist police in our role. I know they have prevented crime, they patrol areas such as schools, churches and parks and provide a visible deterrent to people hang-ing around there. They’ve also as-sisted us in quite a few incidents and been able to provide dialogue from the scene while police are still en route.” Glyn recommends that anyone who has considered joining the patrol before or would

like to give something back to the community to ap-proach the group. “You will find a lot of satisfaction in helping out.”Mike agrees and says that all new members are wel-come to join. “Those that may be interested should call into the local police station for an application form. If you want to help keep Richmond a safer place in which to live, while doing something worth-while for the community, then joining the patrol is a good option to look at. The patrol has the full sup-port of the police and local council.”If you are out and about on the weekend, keep an

eye out for the community patrol, they are easily recognised in their hi-vis jackets and patrol car.

George Stone, Neville Whitaker and Mike Gill, part of local volunteer group the Richmond Community Patrol.

DESIGN & BUILD-FACTOR

Love your location,

but tired of your house?

• It has been one of those days. It began this morning when I dropped the toast, but-ter [and honey] side down. Banking clouds made the sky look as if it was about to drop buckets. But it didn’t, so I had to water plants and deal with a cold spiteful wind at the same time. Then the sun came out, so off came the sweat shirt. But 10 minutes later, the cold set in again. Dropped something, retrieved it, stood up and banged my head. I could go on, but the day ended with a delicious blueberry muffin thanks to Peter, and all is well again. If our chat is a little cranky on my part, all of the above, are the reasons why!• So. The summer veges are in the garden, a-growing [and a-blowing] by today’s efforts. It’s time for a bit of fun.• Plants, just like people, have personali-ties. We are all aware of “the life of the party” type of person. They can be fun, but we are all aware of some who are not! And come to think of it, there is always some self-appoint-ed leader on a bus tour. The one who is always first on the bus, thus ensuring the best seat. This self-same “leader” is also first off as well, and is a confirmed first up at the food bar. And so it goes on. There are the loud mouths, the shy violets, the hard workers, the slackers, The supportive types, and the gunnas. They are always “gunna” do this and that. But prob-ably the most reliable of the collection, are the “supporters” because they can be relied upon to lend a hand and give a bit of support when needed. And of course there are the “flamboy-ants” as well as those who like to do their own thing, regardless.• A shrub called kalmia latifolia likes to be different. It begins life with a pink bud that re-sembles a star made with a cake icing tube. No wonder it is often called the icing sugar shrub. It is a fascinating thing, liking conditions that rhodos and camellias prefer.• There is another shrub called brunfelsia, also going by the name Yesterday Today and Tomorrow. Three shades of mauve bless the shrub at the same time. I forget how it goes, but as the flowers develop, they change their

colours giving a fascinating effect. A woman wanted to give a gift to a friend who was about to deal with a serious operation. She chose the brunfelsia because of the special country name.• A plant that does its own thing, regardless of its cousins, is hydrangea ayesha. It produces flowers that resemble the flowers of the fra-grant lilac. Alas, ayesha doesn’t have the fra-grance, but she is indeed different. Pink or blue blooms depending on soil. Remember, lime for pink flowers, acid for blue. The oak leaf hydrangeas like to be a bit different too, with foliage resembling oak leaves. They col-our up nicely in autumn too.• Conical shaped flowers add to the differ-ence. The Shrimp plant is really different. Can’t remember its botanical name. Too hard to spell as well. But the country name says it all. The flowers really do look like hanging shrimps, colour and all. Can be grown as an indoor plant as well, and I must add it flowers for ages.• Thinking about the pushy person on the bus. There are perennials and shrubs that be-have like their human counterpart too, so be sure to seek advice when buying.• Mention should be made regarding the Sup-porters. In the plant world these are often called companion plants. They quietly offset the loud noisy plants in the garden and make a valuable contribution to the general effect. Never underestimate their value.• Think about a play or musical performance. Yes, the performers are great. The costumes likewise. The props are magnificent. But the audience has eyes only for the performers. At the end of the performance they come for-ward and bow in acknowledgement of your appreciation.• But what would have happened if the stage crew, the make-up, and costume departments and the tea lady had gone on strike, what would you have then?Nothing! Catch you later, Jill.

Ninety-four swimmers from across the region competed at the Christmas Ribbon swim meet on Saturday hosted by the Tas-man Swim Club at Nayland Pool. The Tasman Swim Club, formerly the Nel-son Swimming Club, has recently changed its name to more accurately reflect that the majority of its swimmers are based and train at the ASB Aquatic Centre in Rich-mond, and to also remove the confusion that exists with another similarly named club the Nelson South Swimming Club. There were four standout swimmers at the meet who all swim for the host club. David Price, 14, led the way by recording an im-pressive seven personal best times from all of his races, including slashing a huge 90 seconds off his 1500m freestyle and almost 15 seconds off his 200m breaststroke time. Cassandra Hagan, 12, not to be outdone also recorded seven PBs from seven races and she took an impressive 32 seconds off her 800m freestyle time, and added icing to the cake by making NZ Junior Champs qualifying times in the 100m and 200m freestyle. Kaleb Johnston, 12 recorded four PBs from four races including the biggest PB of the meet as he smashed 93 seconds off his 1500m freestyle time while Xavier Ander-son, also 12, rounded off the four stand-out swimmers also recording four PBs, taking a massive 60 seconds off his 400m freestyle time. The Nelson South Swimming Club entered 25 swimmers and the standout swimmer

was Joe Banner, 13, who claimed four PBs from five races. Jet Persico, 12, also from Nelson South swam well to record three PBs and knocked four seconds off his 200m breaststroke

time. Gabrielle Hannen, 14, was another Nelson South swimmer to impress as she slashed 19 seconds off her 400m freestyle best time. One of Nelson South’s top nationally

ranked swimmers, Eddie Neill, 16, broke the Nelson-Marlborough regional record for 16 year old boys in the 400m Medley taking the record off his older brother Fraser. Some of Nelson South’s swimmers found it tough going as they had just swum in their club championships the night be-fore.Waimea Swimming Club entered 17 swim-mers and the swimmers to impress were Oliver Stark, 11, and Ruby-Lou Stuart, 11, who both swam very well to record four PBs each from six races. Oliver took six seconds off his 200m freestyle best time while Ruby-Lou dropped her 200m Med-ley best time by seven seconds. Competitors from Motueka and Golden Bay were also in attendance.Overall there were eight Nelson–Marlbor-ough regional age group records broken at the meet, and the host Tasman Swim Club scored seven of those records. Sam Mckenzie broke three of the 14 year old records for boys in the 50m, 200m and the 1500m freestyle which has stood since 1993, Talya Harwood broke the 14 year old girls record in the 800m freestyle which has stood since 1994, Madisen Stanley broke the 17 year old girls record in the 800m freestyle, Kaine Ransby broke the 17 year old boys record in the 1500m freestyle while new club member Thomas Heaton, who has recently transferred up from Ota-go, broke the 15 year old boys record in the 1500m freestyle which has stood since 1994.

Aaron Mallinson has been painting Nelson homes and commercial buildings for more than a decade and after three years owning his own business he says it’s his and his staffs attention to detail that is behind his success.Total Decorating was born just be-fore Christmas in 2010 when Aaron took his skills in the painting trade into the new busi-ness. He has since employed several other painters and says it’s been a busy time paint-ing plenty of top Nelson homes and small commercial buildings around the Nelson/Tas-man area. The former Nelson Cricket representative and Waimea toi toi cricket captain is also a father of three and says Total Decorating lives up to its name and can do it all from wall papering to spraying to plastering to coving to roofs to water blasting and everything in between.“All of my guys are qualified, apart from the one

in training. So our standard is really high. We put a lot into our work so that it looks great and the customer is happy. We definitely go the extra mile to make sure when we leave the site, every-one is happy with what we’ve done.”

Aaron says he’ll never walk away from a job he is unhappy with and works with the cli-ent to make sure they feel like they’re in safe hands. “Eve-ry job is different, some want it done on a shoestring budget, others want perfection and on commercial jobs they want guys that can get in and out and work in well with other trades.

We do all that.”Total Decorating is 100 per cent locally owned and Aaron says he’s happy to provide free quotes for anyone who’d like to give him a call on 027 346 6305 or email [email protected].

Brightwater mountainbiker Scott Barr’s dream of becoming a professional rider became a lit-tle more real last week when he was named in the newly formed national junior development squad.Scott is one of eight cross-country riders se-lected for the Torpedo7-sponsored squad which will be training for under-19 races at the national mountainbike champs in Rotorua in February and the Oceania champs at Mt Hutt in March. The 16-year-old Waimea College student will also race in the New Zealand Cup which will be held in Canterbury on January18-19 and Nel-son on February 2-3. “I really want to race full-time so this is a big step along that pathway for me,” Scott says. “It’s going to be a big advantage good training with the squad for nationals and then the Oceanias.”It is the first time that Scott has been named in a national team although his selection is no surprise after recording a series of impressive results at national level. He first came to the selectors attention when he won the under-15 national secondary school’s title in 2011 and fol-lowed that up by winning the under-17 nation-als last year and the under-17 New Zealand Cup this year. Scott is determined to continue producing top results and has been training hard on the trails around the region.“I mostly ride on the Codgers tracks or around the Richmond Hills and sometimes I get out to Kaiteriteri. I also do a bit of road riding which

is good training and it’s also nice to get out with other riders.”Scott says he also enjoys getting out with his fa-ther Darrin, who is also a keen rider, once or twice a week. “It’s fun riding with dad although he has trouble keeping up now.”

Golden boy claims three national titlesPersonal bests, gold medals, na-tional titles, Tasman records. You name it, Chris Brake has got it.The 18 year old Tapawera Area School student became just the second person in Nelson Athlet-ics history to hold eight medals from the New Zealand Secondary School Athletics Championship, adding three golds to his collec-tion on the weekend. The Year 13 student went to Ham-ilton with the goal of winning one gold medal in his final high school competition and at the very least, a personal best in either high jump, long jump or triple jump. He ar-rived back with much more than that, and labelled his performance at Porrit Stadium as “perfect”, equalling the Tasman senior re-

cord with his 2.03m first placing in high jump, and smashing his own personal best in triple jump to win with 14.18m - a staggering 66cm ahead of the silver medalist, and 18cm further than the current Athletics Nelson record. His long jump, of 6.88m, another personal best, capped off a week-end Athletics Nelson head coach Greg Lautenslager described as “one of the most dominating performances by a Nelson-area schoolboy.”Chris says “it’s amazing”. “Crack-ing the two metre mark [in high jump] just before nationals was

a big thing for me because there was about five kids that had cleared the two metre mark.” Chris was the only person to clear 2.03m however and he says it was a “real surprise”. Out of the three medals, Chris says the high jump was “definitely” more significant. “Mainly because I’ve finally got over the two metre mark and it was such an intense competition. There were so many good jumpers that I thought there was a real chance I wouldn’t even get a medal.”Chris will now turn his attention to the New Zealand Track and Field Championship in Welling-ton in March. He was undecided whether he would enter all three jumps at the event.

The cry of “hut, hut, hut!” doesn’t echo around Nel-son very often, but for the past ten weeks it could be heard at Saxton Field as one of its paddocks had been turned into an American football pitch. The Junior Ripper Gridiron League concluded on Friday night and head coach Mark Rais, who ran around in a full black and white referee uniform during the season, says it was another big success. The aim was to get children playing a new sport at a time that would generally be their offseason. But having been told that some of them had been researching their favourite players and had been glued to the TV screens when the NFL was on, Mark believes there is some interest here in Ameri-

can’s biggest sport. “The most important thing was to make sure they enjoyed it, you don’t want it to be a tedious sport,” he says. “For people that never met, they’re now friends and that meant a lot.”The age of players varied between nine and 16 years, with competitors of both genders. Each player was put into one of the two evenly matched teams, the Nelson Knights or the Tasman Hornets, and given a position for the season. “A lot of them came from different backgrounds; track and field, rugby, some came from soccer, but to have that mix brought a different set of skills.”The next season will begin in September with regis-trations happening in August.

Makos quintet headline sevens squadThere is plenty of speed and strike power in the Tasman Makos sevens squad which was named last week, and the team’s man-ager believes they are a real chance to reach the quarter finals of the Bayleys National Sevens for the first time. The 20-man training squad features full-time Tasman Makos Tevita Koloamatangi, Bryce Heem, Billy Guyton, Mitchell Scott and Robbie Malneek, while a mixture

of top club performers and youngsters complement what is probably the strong-est squad Tasman has sent to the national championship.Manager Mike Kerrisk says, providing Te-vita and Billy are released from their Super Rugby squads, the team is more mature than they’ve had in the past. “There are some really good leaders this time round and we’ve got genuine pace and a good un-

derstanding of the game,” he says. He singled out Mitchell and James Lash as two players that will be key to Tasman’s success, while Bryce, who is part of the All Blacks Sevens squad, will also be an added boost. The full training squad is: Daniel Baxter, Te Puoho Stephens, Sione Holani, Dan Hytongue, Tevita Koloamatangi, Bryce Heem, Daniel Van Waas, Willie Umu,

James Lash, Mitchell Scott, Ryan Setefano, Billy Guyton, Nanai Naturanga, David Havili, Robbie Malneek, Latham Jones, Kerehama Barrett, Hana Corbett-Burrows, Pelefoti Siaki and Eliot Smith.Kaide Whiting was still under an injury cloud and therefore was not named in the 20-man squad, while Wanderers duo Fletcher Matthews and Trael Joass have been ruled out.

Holly was partnered with Eloise van Velt-hooven.Over in the men’s draw, Jesse Kempf came up against Nathan, but couldn’t get the better of him, with Nathan win-ning out 2-1. Jesse was partnered with Amos Stephens and Nathan had Teryn Proracki on his team for the final.Overall there were 20 competitors with 15 in the men’s draw.
