We meet Thursdays, September through June (see schedule for specific dates), at Overlake Christian Church, located at 9900 Willows Rd. NE, Redmond, WA.

The instructors determine the course content, materials, and cost of each class. All instructors are required to sign and be in agreement with our Sta tement of Fa ith and Missi on Statement (available upon request). Parents are welcome a nd highly encouraged to attend classes with their children.

Legacy Homeschool Center does not employ instructors. They are under the employ of the families who have a student attending his/her class. 8:30 AM - 10:00 AM CLASSES High School Biology – Rhonda Zeutschel Grade: 9 - 12 Class Size: 8 to 16 Cost: $40 monthly, $80 materials Text: Biology with Laboratory Exercises for Christian Schools, BJUP, 3rd Ed (Vol. A&B) Prerequisites: 9th graders MUST have complete d physical science Description: This course provides a more advanced approach to Biology as the first se mester focuses on bioch emistry, microbiology, and biotechnology. The second half of the course does include the famili ar topics of botany, zoology, and h uman anatomy. C ollege format for lab r eports will be taught. Clas s time includes weekly quizzes, multimedia enhanced lectures, and a lab which reinforces the topic. While lectures are presented to introduce the material, stu dents are e xpected to l earn the text material at home to facilitate labs during class. Biochemistry and microbiology labs include: DNA extraction, gel electrophoresis (DNA fingerprinting), transformation of bacterial DNA, and use of microscopes for cytology and microbiology. Zoology labs include skeletal remains identification, eye, heart a nd brain dissections, as well as invertebrate, frog, and fetal pig dissections. Homework will take 4-8 hours per week - no late work accepted - students must maintain a passing grade to remain in class. Latin HS II/III – Deborah Langley Grade: 9 - 12 Class Size: 7 to 15 Cost: $18 monthly, $20 materials Text: varies by level - Wheelock's 6th ed. revised; Workbook for Wheelock's Latin 3rd ed. revised; English Grammar for Students of Latin; 5 01 Latin Verbs; Comprehensive Guide to W heelock's Latin; plus readers: 38 Latin Stories; Duces Romanorum, Love Poetry Prerequisites: Latin HS I Description: HS II/III will be a one and one half hour class with 45 minutes teacher instruction time and 45 minutes of supervised translation lab work with TAs. Level II will be considerably more aggressive than HS I. Stud ents should be prepared to do 6-7 hours of homework a week. We will work through 23 chapters of Wheelock's Latin. HS III will take Latin enthusiasts through Wheelock’s chapters 24-40. T his aggressive completion of Wheelock will be followed by in class and at home translations of classical Latin excerpts of prose and poetry. Students should be prepared to do 6-7 hours of homework a week. Students of both Latin HS II and III will be encouraged to take the National Latin Exam in March and preparation for the exam will be part of the course study including assigned reports. Students should purchase required texts and books and complete the first lesso n prior to first class. Complete text lists and first assignment will be supplied by the teacher following registration.

9:00 AM - 10:00 AM CLASSES Adventures In Art 2 – Rita Rothlisberger Grade: 4 - 7 Class Size: 7 to 20 Cost: $25 monthly, $80 materials Text: Personal supplies of $30 or less Prerequisites: Some previous art instruction is helpful but not required Description: For the studen t who already knows the b asics and desires a more in-depth study in the field of art. Students will learn to use a variet y of mediums such as temp era, watercolor, pastel, acrylics, collage, clay and colored pencil. Projects will focus on composition, depth, balance, focal point, and color. Students will study the works of fine artists of the past as well as the present. They will explore the different art styles and gain confidence as they discover their own personal style of art expression. All materials for the classroom will be provided in the m aterials fee. T here will be very little homework. Biblical Science – Terry Brenna Grade: 1 - 3 Class Size: 12 to 25 Cost: $20 monthly, $32 materials Text: Provided by teacher Prerequisites: None Description: Romans 1:18 tells us God has r evealed His invisible attributes, His eternal power and His divine nature to mankind through His creation of the world. Using the creation week as our outline, we'll embark on an exciting adventure to learn more about God through science. With demonstrations, hands-on exploration and application of His word, we'll discover ways to use this informati on to glorify Him and concurrently lay the foundation for future science study . Although no homework is required, all students are encouraged to keep and review a science notebook. Activities for further enrichment outside of class time will be suggested. Character First! 1 And 2 – Carrie Myers and Allison Hurst Grade: 1 - 5 Class Size: 7 to 25 Cost: $20 monthly, $45 materials Text: Provided by teacher, Character First! Education Curriculum Prerequisites: None - Qua lities are taught on a t wo year rotation thus different from last year. Description: Chil dren at the elementary level are at one of the most impressionable times in their lives, thus it is important to instill a good grasp of godly character at this age so it can guide them throughout life. There are eighteen character qualities which are taught using stories from Scripture, nat ure, and history, while fun songs, crafts, games, and more a dd to the enjoyment. Each child receives a 3-ring binder and beautifully illustrated trading cards for each quality, complete with character definitions and ways of implementing the qualities. Parents will receive an 8 1/2 x 11 poster, a tabl e topper, and Parent Previews for each character quality to help reinforce the teachings at home. A wards are giv en for memorization of character definitions and applications

9:00 AM - 10:00 AM CLASSES Digital Photography: Capture It! – Rhonda Sather Grade: 8 - 12 Class Size: 8 to 25 Cost: $25 monthly, $30 materials Text: None Prerequisites: Each stude nt will need access to a digit al camera 4.0 megapixels or larger (point and shoot, or DSLR), and the camera's User Manual. The camera needs to be available to bring to each class. Description: In this class we will learn camera operation, types of light, composition, exposure, rules of the trade and photograph presentation. We will also go over many techniques and composition elements that make a ll the difference in a st riking photograph. Students will have time in class to explore the new concepts, ask questions and work with their cameras. We will have regular assignments to be completed as well. Student will also need to be a ble to print som e of their p ictures for assignments due (like at Costco photo). At the en d of this class each student will have a portfolio showing their own style of 'capturing' their world. Down To Earth (Formerly Navigating The Culture/Naturalism) – Steve Carrier Grade: 9 - 12 Class Size: 10 to 25 Cost: $20 monthly, $10 materials Text: Provided (students build their own workbook) Prerequisites: Curiosity Description: This is a rem odeled course that follows the basic theme of Navigating the Culture of Naturalism. The difference is an emphasis beyond the discussion of 'naturalism' vs. 'creation'; and centers on making sure the student is confident in his origin, identity, destiny, value and purpose. This class explores the current dominant culture of Naturalism (secular materialism) and associated evolutionary studies. Students learn the foundational arguments of the naturalistic culture, and more importantly, the student learns how to answer these arguments using disciplined science and logic. Creation Science is emphasized, and students are introduced to that place where physics meets metaphysics, where we discover the imprint of cre ation in the natural realm. Moreover, the students are encouraged to learn the meaning of this imprint a nd how we should be us ing it to enlarg e the Kingdom of God. Experiencing Art With Judi, Grades 6-12 Beginning – Judi Byrne Grade: 6 - 12 Class Size: 5 to 16 Cost: $30 monthly, $80 materials Text: None Prerequisites: Portfolio for transportin g art. No exp erience required. Description: The objective is to intro duce students into the world of art. T hey will experience the joy of tr ying different mediums, different papers, pencils, brushes, famous artists of the past, their styles and techniques, the world of color, and ways to explore the usage of line, texture and space. They will draw, paint, and cr eate a paper mache sc ulpture. I expla in and demonstrate each project, and give one on one support as time allows. I create a fun and frie ndly environment with soft classical music and a friendly personality. Projects can take from 1 week to several, depending on steps, and complexity. I try to have two art shows a year.

9:00 AM - 10:00 AM CLASSES Geometry – Kristine Grigas Grade: 9 - 12 Class Size: 8 to 18 Cost: $28 monthly, $15 materials Text: Geometry: Seeing, Doing and Understanding, 3e, Harold R. Jac obs, ISBN: 0- 7167-4361-2 and the E nhanced Teacher's Guide, ISBN: 07167-5607-2 Prerequisites: completi on of Algebra I, optio nal placement test available from instructor Description: T his course is a stu dy of traditional Euclidean Geometry. The student will become familiar with both plane and solid figures. The properties of the se figures will be studied through the use of definitions, postulates, and theorems. Geometry uses proofs to b uild logic skills and analytical thinking. This text inc ludes high-interest, real-world exercises and humor to capture the students' interest and help them understand applications of what they are learning. A firm foundation in geometry is essential in furt her mathematical study and can help increase the appreciation of our world and our Creator. Expect 5-6 hours coursework/week including daily lessons and tests. Tests will be provided by the instructor. Course gr ades given based on homework, tests, and class participation. Books can be purchased used or from publisher. Gym 2-3 – Marnie Lum Grade: 2 - 3 Class Size: 16 to 24 Cost: $20 monthly, $20 materials Text: None Prerequisites: None Description: Physical Fitness is important for everyone. God created our bodies and we need to tak e good care of t hem. This class is intended to get your home schooler moving! During class we will do: warm ups/stretches/movement, calisthenics/exercises/strength building, cooperative learning games/relays, coordination development, sports skill bu ilding and more. Emphasis will be on: having a Christ like sportsmanship attitude, parti cipation, friendly competition and having fun. The main goal is to encourage a life-long love of physical activity. This class will overlap and share the g ym with the Gals Only P.E. cl ass. T his will give the Gals leadership opportunities to work with younger kids and for the kids to have some great role models. Note: Duri ng some of the units, students ma y be asked to bring sports eq uipment from home if they have them. E x. jump rope, volleyball, basketball etc. Students should wear comfortable clothes, gym shoes and can also bring a p lastic water bottle, with name labeled, to dr ink during break time.

9:00 AM - 10:00 AM CLASSES Hands-On Equations – Denise Sumner Grade: 3 - 6 Class Size: 5 to 20 Cost: $25 monthly, $40 materials Text: All materials supplied by teacher; includes binder and kit Prerequisites: Basic arithmetic Description: W ould you like your child to have an advantage when he/she takes Algebra? Hands-On Equations is a program designed to introduce younger children to concepts usually not introduced until Algebra. T he program uses manipulatives to teach students to solv e equations and verbal problems. Once concepts are mastered, students transition to the tradi tional "paper and pencil" approach to solving equations. This method strengthens the student' s understanding of algebraic concepts, problem solving and mental math skills, all while having fun. Students must have a firm understanding of adding, subtracting and basic multiplying/dividing skills. Most work will be done during class. Homework will be up to 45 minutes per week depending on student's pace. Spanish is the second most spoken language in the world, and learning it can be fun. Students will be introduced to spoken and written Spanish. We will learn everyday conversation through dialog. I will include Bible verse memorization. Computer games will be sent almost every other week so the student will practice what was learned at class. Aerobic conditioning will primarily be done by outdoor running, muscular strength will be achieved through weight training and floor exercises. Muscul ar and cardiovascular endurance will be increased through supersetting and c ircuit type training. Flexibility will be enhanced through a series of active and static stretching. It is strongly recommended that students perform aerobic and resistance type training an additional 3-4 days per week to achieve optimal results and to prevent injury. E xercise routines that can an d should done at home will be covered as well as learning how to journal workouts. An assessment will be done at the beginning of the year and at the end to see how overall fitness improved during the school year. Prerequisites: None Description: We will study the history of the Un ited States from a C hristian worldview perspective. I think Bill Bennett's text is the best on the m arket, and it h as an extensive online support system available for around $10.00 annually. Grades will be based on tests and one paper per semester. Students should plan to study roughly one h our a d ay, separate from paper preparation. The texts are av ailable in p aper or hardback. Parents should plan on one meeting this year to go over the online support system. The War of Independence, adoption of the Constitution, Civil War, WWII and the Cold War are periods which will be emphasized. The theme of Amer ican exceptionalism will be stressed.

A erobic conditioning will primarily be done by outdoor running, muscular strength will be a chieved through weight training and floor e xercises. It is strongly recommended that students perform a erobic and r esistance type training an additional 3-4 days per week to ac hieve optimal results and to prevent injury. Students will also need a calculator with trig functions and scientific notation Prerequisites: Completion of Algebra I Description: Not only is physics fun, physics is the most elegant and fundamental of the sciences - it is a study of matter, energy, space and time. As chemistr y is nothing more than the applied laws of physics and modern biology is merely applied chemistry, a scientific u nderstanding of the world requires a kno wledge of physics. In the mathematical precision of the laws of physics which apply to the universe, the hand of the Creator is revealed. This course u ses a r ather simplistic text and f ocuses on the basics of physics: Motion in one and two dimensions, Newton's Laws, Work, Energy, Waves, Optics, Electricity, and Magnetism. Class time will include both lecture and lab. Labs will include extensive work with computerized sensors introducing students to a level of technology not readily available in most classrooms.
