Business Challenge: Accelerate Deliveryof New ServicesLa Caixa is Spains largest savings bank and third largest
finance company. With roots that date back to 1844, the
bank has a long history of social commitment both
in terms of safeguarding families savings and, through
its charitable foundation, supporting social, cultural, and
scientific activities. Today, la Caixa follows a multi-channel
management strategy that leverages advanced technologies
and skilled employees to provide high-quality, comprehensive
banking services to consumers.
To power its 5,300-plus locations and network of more
than 8,000 ATMs (Spains largest), la Caixa relies upon a
complex technology landscape comprising large mainframes
thousands of Intel processor-based Linux servers, and
more than 1,000 network devices. In addition, a small group
of IT outsourcers share responsibility for managing the
banks infrastructure.
In recent years, la Caixa employed server consolidation and
virtualization to reduce data center floor space and power
and cooling costs. But with aggressive objectives to quickly
introduce new customer services and improve market share,
the bank was looking for ways to accelerate time to service
while keeping IT management and server-provisioning costs
low. In addition, growing regulatory oversight was adding to
ITs workload, as employees were tasked to compile the data
required to comply with stringent security audits.
In light of these challenges, la Caixa needed a way to streamline
and standardize IT services, and become better positioned to
take advantage of the cost and flexibility of cloud computing
service delivery model. Understanding that best practices
and expertise in data center transformation and cloud were
essential to realizing these goals, la Caixa turned to Unisys
for advice. Senior executives from the bank were invited
to Unisys headquarters to view a demonstration of Unisys
in-house data center automation solution. When we saw
the standardization and productivity gains Unisys realized,
we knew we had found a partner that could make our data
center and cloud transformation plans a reality, explains
Carlos Campaa, Deputy General Manager for Architecture
and Infrastructure.

ChallengeEnsure a close connection between business goals and
supporting IT resources so that new customer services
can be quickly and efficiently brought to market.
SolutionLa Caixa turned to Unisys for advisory services that
reviewed the financial institutions strategic goals,
assessed transformation and delivery options, and
developed a roadmap to achieve efficiencies and flexibility.
With the help of Unisys and BMC Software, la Caixa
deployed a suite of infrastructure management tools
that automate resource provisioning, ensure process
standardization, and assist with security audit responses.
ResultsBy adopting new solutions to streamline provisioning
and management of IT resources, and standardizing on
processes across the organization, la Caixa has created
an environment where technology supports business goals
and objectives. Whats more, this transformation provides
a foundation for lower-cost, flexible cloud computing
services that will allow the financial institution to respond
to market demands quickly and competitively.
Metrics
Agility:New IT services provisioned in hours instead ofthree to five weeks
Efficiency:Support requirements reduced via
standardization of processes and software components
Compliance:Security audit response achieved in a few
days rather than weeks, including development of the
formal report
By transforming our data center andembracing cloud computing, we are
once again using IT to better serve
our customers.

Solution: Data Center andCloud TransformationAs a first step, la Caixa asked Unisys to develop a
proof-of-concept to show how the bank could benefit for
a similar IT automation solution. In just three weeks, the
Unisys team worked with its partner BMC to create a working
model that showed how the BMC suite of data center
automation tools could streamline server provisioning in
la Caixas environment. Unisys consultants showed that
they understood la Caixas business goals and technology
challenges and demonstrated a data center automation
solution that was tailored to our needs, recalls Campaa.
Using its knowledge of the banks business and IT
environment and BMC tools, Unisys proposed a multi-phase
approach to data center and cloud computing transformation
focusing first on automated provisioning and compliance
for the banks mid-range server platforms.
la Caixa accepted Unisys plan and the partners moved
forward with the first phase in October , which involved
much more than installation of the BMC automation tools.
For example, while la Caixa had documented its security
policies, it had never been able to enforce compliance in
an automated manner. As part of the Phase 1 work, Unisys
consultants carefully mapped the written security policies into
rules within the BMC software ensuing strict adherence
going forward. The first phase in our transformation project
went live on schedule at the end of December, says RafaelOrdoez, Manager, Technical Office. 1,900 of the banks
mid-range servers are under the control of the new tool set,
which also includes virtual and physical server provisioning
and server and network device monitoring.
Phase 2 of the project expands the solution to all platforms
in la Caixas infrastructure, and adds further automation
and self-service features. This phase also introduces
a single, consolidated configuration repository and
customized management reporting dashboards, completing
the foundation that la Caixa needs to adopt a lower-costinternal cloud computing service delivery model. The third
and final phase offers support and maintenance services
that will help keep the banks IT services running at peak
performance for years to come.

Results: Streamlined, Responsive IT ServicesWith the help of Unisys and partner BMC, la Caixa is truly
transforming its IT infrastructure into one that:
Supports business initiatives with the ability to provision
new IT services in hours instead of three to five weeks
Significantly reduces support requirements by
standardizing on a pre-defined set of software
components for new virtual servers
Provides the ability to respond to security audits in a few
days rather than weeks, including development of the
formal report
By adopting a IT service automation solution that is
customized to its unique requirements, la Caixa is better
positioned to quickly respond to new market opportunities
and pressures. The wise use of technology to achievecompetitive differentiation has always helped la Caixa grow
market share, says Campaa. By transforming our data
center and embracing cloud computing, we are once again
using IT to better serve our customers.
