10TH MARCH 2019 FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT YR C The time of Lent has begun. The Church, through the text of today's gospel, gives us clues as to how to make this time of Lent a fruitful journey towards Easter. This forty-day period isn’t a leisure “walk" but rather a challenging and vigilant one because we need to be on guard against the hidden actions of evil. The temptations were subtle; turn stones to bread, to jump off the parapet of the Temple and to bow down to Satan. St. Teresa of Avila once said: “I do not fear the devil. But I do fear his agents.” In other words, those who do the devil’s work on the ground in a very subtle way. The first temptation of turning stones to bread touches a very sensitive string. It is selfishness. When the human heart is wrapped up in this temptation, there is nothing more to embrace, because such heart thinks only about itself and nothing else. The modern man gives easily into this temptation and what is even more alarming people no longer realise it. Since this temptation has taken the appearance of something positive today's confusion between good and evil has become a widespread reality. In the name of freedom, people do what they like and want. Nobody can prohibit them from going in the direction that attracts them. In such a situation, neither the reason nor the obligation, nor the common good and truth, have anything to say. Here, the selfishness itself becomes an absolute, both in the life of the individual and in society. St. John Paul II wrote about this danger in the encyclical Veritatis Splendor-the Splendor of truth " This is the risk of an alliance between democracy and ethical relativism, which would remove any sure moral reference point from political and social life, and on a deeper level make the acknowledgement of truth impossible. History teaches that democracy without values of the Gospel can easily be transformed into an explicit or hidden dictatorship of those who do the devil’s works on the ground. " (VS 101) Jesus’ response to the temptations began repetitively with the same words “It is written”. The “recommendations” of the evil one were verified again and again in the light the Word of God which always tells us what is right and what is right. 10TH MARCH 2019

FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT YR C

The time of Lent has begun. The Church, through the text

of today's gospel, gives us clues as to how to make this time

of Lent a fruitful journey towards Easter. This forty-day

period isn’t a leisure “walk" but rather a challenging and

vigilant one because we need to be on guard against the

hidden actions of evil.

The temptations were subtle; turn stones to bread, to jump off the parapet of the

Temple and to bow down to Satan.

St. Teresa of Avila once said: “I do not fear the devil. But I do fear his agents.” In

other words, those who do the devil’s work on the ground in a very subtle way.

The first temptation of turning stones to bread touches a very sensitive string. It

is selfishness. When the human heart is wrapped up in this temptation, there is

nothing more to embrace, because such heart thinks only about itself and

nothing else. The modern man gives easily into this temptation and what is even

more alarming people no longer realise it. Since this temptation has taken the

appearance of something positive today's confusion between good and evil has

become a widespread reality. In the name of freedom, people do what they like and want. Nobody can prohibit them from going in the direction that attracts

them.

In such a situation, neither the reason nor the obligation, nor the common good

and truth, have anything to say. Here, the selfishness itself becomes an absolute,

both in the life of the individual and in society. St. John Paul II wrote about this

danger in the encyclical Veritatis Splendor-the Splendor of truth " This is the risk

of an alliance between democracy and ethical relativism, which would remove

any sure moral reference point from political and social life, and on a deeper level

make the acknowledgement of truth impossible. History teaches that democracy

without values of the Gospel can easily be transformed into an explicit or hidden

dictatorship of those who do the devil’s works on the ground. " (VS 101)

Jesus’ response to the temptations began repetitively with the same words “It is

written”. The “recommendations” of the evil one were verified again and again in

the light the Word of God which always tells us what is right and what is right.

Although we are at the beginning of Lent the Holy Triduum liturgies will come quickly, so we need to begin preparations to celebrate these three days with proper devotion and reverence. In our parish, these three days, are observed in Mary

Immaculate Church, Ashmore. On Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday (Easter Vigil) parishioners of Southport Parish and visitors come to celebrate the Paschal Mystery - the “Grand Finale” of the Liturgical Year. This “Grand Finale” gathers us all in one place to celebrate and venerate Jesus’ death and his Resurrection. As last year the Liturgy of these three days was “shared” among our three

churches of St Joseph, Mary Immaculate and Guardian Angels it will be the same this year. Last year’s sharing proved that it was an excellent way to involve ministers from all our churches in this special celebration.

This year Holy Thursday will be in the hands of parishioners from Guardian Angels then Good Friday in the hands of St Joseph, and finally, Easter Vigil will be looked after by the ministers of Mary Immaculate.

This “roster’ will rotate every year so that the “ownership” of

this liturgy will be in the hands of all parishioners.

Easter ceremonies of the Holy

Triduum, the choir will begin practice on the first Monday after Ash Wednesday, 11th March. The practice starts at 6:30pm to

7:30pm at Mary Immaculate Church, Ashmore. Singing and music are an essential part of the Holy Week liturgy, although our Parish is blessed with so many dedicated musicians and singers, we need more parishioners to join this choir practice and make Easter Ceremonies a beautiful worship through singing and music.

Invitation – Altar Servers are needed for St Joseph

the Worker Church (Labrador) Children who received

their First Holy Communion last year, have now received the Sacraments of Christian initiation. One way to continue to build on this faith is to participate at Mass as Altar Servicers. Should you desire to become an altar server, you will be most welcome and once details are established, we can soon commence your training. If you are interested in being part of this ministry, please contact Maria Blancia on 5510 2222 or by email [email protected]

On Wednesday 13th March 2019 we will be celebrating

Fatima Day and 19th of March celebrating the Feast of St Joseph at the Marian Valley and would love for you to join us for both occasion. The bus will pickup at Sacred Heart Church, Clear Island Waters, at 8.15am. If sufficient numbers book, we will also pickup from Mary Immaculate Church in Ashmore at the bus stop (across road from Church) at approximately 8.00am. The bus will also collect passengers at Nerang Train Station on the Leagues Club Drive side, at approximately 8.30am. The cost for the bus is $20 return. When booking your seat, please verify your

point of pickup. You can secure your seat with Paula on 0402 930918 or 5582 7950 or Madeline on 0405 252 367 or 5529 1573.
