Summer Reading Program

This year we are expanding a program we started during the school year to take the place of our previous summer reading program. During the third quarter the students were set up with a Read Theory username and password. Read Theory is a K-12 online reading comprehension program that presents assessments to students at a “just right” level. Read Theory generates enough data from these assessments to populate their progress report, that is filled with insights about their unique reading abilities.

Tips for Success

First Time Users :

If you are new to Read Theory, the student will have to complete a pre-assessment passage and quiz. Parents, please do not assist your child with reading or answering this initial assessment. It begins at a 3rd grade level; then based on your child’s responses, it works either up or back in level in order to find your child’s current reading level. The pre-assessment quiz will not tell you if their answer is correct or incorrect. You will notice the degree of difficulty changing with each story until the pre-assessment is complete.

Once the pre-assessment is complete, your child will be given reading passages along with comprehension questions. When he/she has finished reading the passage, click the top left bar that says questions. They may return to the passage to check his/her answers by simply clicking the bar labeled passage.

If an incorrect answer is given, an explanation will appear at the bottom of the page in red. Reading passages will continue to be automatically leveled for your child. You may check his/her progress and performance by clicking on the graph icon at the top of the page.

Entering First Grade Only:

For students entering 1st grade, parents may read the passage and questions to their children but please refrain from giving your child the answer. Providing answers will only nullify the purpose of the program. Their score on the assessments are not worth a grade. Their grade is solely on completing the required number of assessments. Allow them to freely select the answer without prompting them. This will give us a better understanding of their level of comprehension. Remember some of the stories will be more difficult than others. Remind them not to get frustrated. This is to help build their reading comprehension skills.

This is not meant to be overwhelming for the students. The best strategy to ensure they complete all of their required assessments is to do 1-3 per week depending on the amount they need to complete.

Remember to continue reading to and with your children any chance you get.

Have a great summer!

Summer Math Program

Summer math this year is done through Prodigy, an online math game. The students are required to play 30 minutes per week during the summer. A grade for participation will be assigned for completing this activity. Mrs. Mattison can see their progress and amount of time spent playing from her Teacher Portal.

Login Information:

To login go to: https://prodigygame.com/

Please note: You will never have to pay to use this site unless you choose to unlock “Special” features

First Time Users:

Click Green Button – Get your free account Create an account by filling out the boxes for your name and email and select

“student” as the account type. When you are done, it will ask you to play the game, click on that button and the

log on screen will appear. Click “New Student” and use the classroom code:

o Incoming 5th Graders use code: FA2591 o Incoming 6th Graders use code: EF0FD5 (that’s a zero not an o) o Incoming 7th Graders use code: 64AE0C (that’s a zero not an o)

Your child will then be prompted to “play” – the game will gauge your child’s ability and then level the play and focus on the skills we need most practice on.

Mrs. Mattison will then be able to see their progress in her reports.

Already Have an Account?:

If your child already uses this game they can update their existing profile by using the class code above. This will link their progress to Mrs. Mattison. Please have them do this

You can also download Prodigy Math Game App from the App Store for your tablets or phones. The game works best on the computer but they can play on either and still receive their participation grade.

If you have any questions, the school office is open during the summer Mon-Thurs 9am-12pm. Mrs. Nikki can assist you.

Thank you for promoting continued math practice. It will hugely impact their success next year. Enjoy your summer.
