We appreciate your firms use of our products on the Clyfford Still Museum here in Denver and your specifying us in Portland as well. Across the country we have found that approval of our system often depends on the specific code official reviewing the project. This situation is very similar to one we faced in San Francisco last year where the San Francisco Building Department did not want any combustible items on a Type I building. Our products are technically combustible and there is no way around this. That said we have done extensive testing of the pedestal polypropylene and the wood tiles, and are able to pass some very rigid testing. In the end, after considering all our testing, the San Francisco Building Department has tacitly approved our system and I have attached a copy of the announcement. After reviewing your email we can offer the following information and support. Much of the issue stems from confusion over whether the pedestals and surfacing are considered a building element as defined by ICC Code Section 602 or as an allowed combustible material allowed in Section 603. We contend that the pedestals and surface materials are appropriately covered by Section 603: Combustible Material in Type I and II construction, page 109 of the IBC 2012. That section of the code states: Section 603: Combustible Material in Type I and II construction 603.1 Allowable Materials: Combustible materials shall be permitted in buildings of Type I and II construction in the following applications and in accordance with Sections 603.1.1 through 603.1.3: 1. Fire Retardant treated wood shall be permitted in: 1.3 Roof construction, including girders, trusses, framing and decking. In addition, it is important to note that a Bison pedestal system is installed over a Class A, B or C rated roof system. So, in the case of Type I construction, that system carries a Class A Fire Rating and the Bison products create a decking surface above the Class A system which meet or exceed IBC fire requirements for both the wood tiles and the polypropylene system.
