    WHITLEY BAY FC BW3FA Vase Winners: 2002, 2009, 2010, 2011

Good evening and welcome to Hillheads Park for tonight’s STL Northern League game against local rivalsAshington. I would like to extend a very warm welcome to all players, officials and supporters of Ashingtonand I hope they enjoy their evening with us.

Last season, the Colliers recorded two wins at Hillheads, knocking us out of the Northumberland Senior Cup in Januaryand then ending our record breaking 18 match winning run in April, so we have a score to settle this evening!

Ashington are managed by our FA Vase winning captain from 2002 Gary Middleton and we are pleased to welcome himback to Hillheads this evening, along with two more former Whitley players who are in the Ashington squad, AndyDugdale, who was a member of our Championship winning side in 2007 and Chris Fawcett, who played his part in ourlast three FA Vase triumphs and rejoined the Colliers during the summer.

Early season results suggest that this looks like being one of the most competitive Northern League seasons for manyyears and no team can be taken for granted so we will need to be on form tonight if we are to collect the points.

Bishop Auckland gave us a hard game in the FA Cup on Saturday but a spectacular goal from Lee Kerr saw us throughto the next round, where we face Marske United on Saturday 3rd September. Coincidentally, newly promoted Marskeare also our visitors on Saturday in a league game.

Please note that on Sunday 4th September, the Club is holding a family fun day here at Hillheads, to which allsupporters and friends are very welcome. The entertainment begins at midday.

Finally, our very best wishes go to young striker Christie Elliott who was signed by Scottish First Division side PartickThistle last week. He came off the bench on Saturday and on his debut scored Partick’s goal in their 1-1 draw withHamilton Academicals.

FA CUP with BUDWEISER EXTRA PRELIMINARY ROUND

WHITLEY BAY 2BISHOP AUCKLAND 1Saturday 20th AugustWhitley had to work hard for the victory that tookthem through to the next round of the FA Cup, withBishop Auckland pushing them all the way. Thevisitors had the better of then first half anddeservedly led at the interval but Whitley stepped uptheir game after the interval and two excellent goalsearned them a home tie with Marske United in twoweeks time.

Damon Robson was missing from the starting line upfollowing the knee injury he suffered at Penrith inmidweek but Gareth Williams was back in the team,as was Lee Kerr, who missed the midweek gamethrough work commitments. In Robson’s absence,LeePaul Scroggins was named captain.

The game was preceded by an impeccably observedone minute silence in memory of two former playersand a long serving supporter who died during thesummer. Ray Oliver played for both Whitley andBishop Auckland in the 1950’s and was the first Bayplayer to score 100 goals for the Club while BobbyCain was a member of the Championship winningside in 1965 and supporter Bob Pinkney was a clubVice President.

The game got underway in warm sunshine and withless than three minutes played, Whitley might havegone ahead but Gary Ormston’s cross to the back postwas played into the side netting by David Pounderwhen he should at least have tested keeper SimonBishop.

The visitors were quick to close down on Whitley’smidfield, denying them possession with somedetermined tackling and they took the lead with 12minutes on the clock. The goal came when the ballwas played into the goalmouth from near the lefttouchline by Daniel Hawkins. Bay keeper Jonny Balllooked to be unsighted with Bishops’ Adam McLaneblocking his view. The ball took a deflection when

what appeared to be a lack of communication indefence resulted in Gareth Williams making a lateattempted clearance and the ball ended up in the net. There was some doubt at the time as to who got thecrucial touch but Williams later acknowledged that itwas him, although the visiting officials felt that itshould be awarded to Darren Atkinson.

The goal did little for the confidence of Whitley’syoung reserve keeper who not long after failed tocollect a shot that bounced off his chest and justbeyond the reach of an opponent.

Whitley should have equalised after 19 minutes butPaul Robinson appeared to mishit the ball at the backpost following a good cross from Craig McFarlanewhich beat the Bishops defence and only needed atap in.

Ball reacted well to taunts from the visiting fans witha good diving save to push away a low shot fromAndrew Johnson after 25 minutes as the visitorsthreatened a second goal which could have put thegame beyond Whitley. Auckland were frustratingWhitley with their hard tackling tactics and Robinsonin particular was getting little space in which tocreate openings. Passes were going astray and therewas a lack of penetration by Whitley.

Strong appeals for a Whitley penalty were wavedaway after Dale looked to be tugged to the ground bya defender but the referee deemed that both playerswere equally guilty.

In first half stoppage time Whitley came their closestyet to levelling the score when a free kick 20 yards

  • from goal was curled past Bishop by Lee Kerr but theball crashed off the inside of the post and back acrossthe face of goal and away from danger.

Whitley needed to get back in the game as soon aspossible after half time and within 90 seconds theywere level, when Dale’s ball played McFarlane awaydown the right. His pace took him clear of thedefence and from about 20 yards out he fired the ballpast Bishop. The goal seemed to transform Whitleyand soon after they created another chance whenScroggins was put through by Dale and when the ballfell to Robinson, his attempted chip shot lackedsufficient power. Ten minutes into the half, Ormstonhad a great chance to put Whitley in front but hisheader from McFarlane’s cross was off target.

Whitley were beginning to enjoy more success downthe right wing with McFarlane proving more effective.A few minutes later a clever back heel by Daleprovided Robinson with a chance but McLane did wellto block his shot.

The decisive goal came with 63 minutes on the clockand while it may be something of a cliché, it iscertainly true to say that it was a goal worthy ofwinning any match. Lee Kerr burst through on theright of midfield and from fully 25 yards he fired aspectacular shot into the top corner of the net thatleft Bishop rooted to the spot.

Whitley were looking the better side now but Bishopswere still a threat and Ball had to make a diving save

to deny Johnson. Both sides were becoming frustratedby some baffling and at times inconsistent decisionsby the officials which did not help the flow of thegame.

Gary Ormston was playing an influential role forWhitley, working hard to win the ball in defence andmidfield and he was covering a lot of ground. Bothsides made substitutions as the game entered the last20 minutes, with Phil Bell making a welcome returnfor Whitley. Late on he put the ball just over the barfollowing a cross from Pounder, but with the game inthe first of a six minute period of added time,Johnson wasted a gilt edged opportunity to force areplay when he failed to hit the target when facedwith an open goal.

  • BW10 A brief history of Whitley Bay Football Club

1950’sThe present Whitley Bay Football Club was formed in 1950 andwas known as Whitley Bay Athletic. From 1950 until 1955Athletic were members of the Northern Alliance, winning theLeague Championship once and the League Cup twice. In1952/53 they became the first amateur team for sixty years towin the Northumberland Senior Cup. In 1958 a limited companywas formed, the Athletic dropped from the title and the clubjoined the Northern League.

1960’sDuring the 1960’s Whitley Bay became one of the top amateurclubs in the country. They won the Northern League title in1964/65 and 1965/66, as well as the League Cup in 1964/65. TheClub won the Northumberland Senior Cup six times in ten years. But it was in the Amateur Cup that Whitley rose to nationalprominence, reaching the semi-finals twice and the quarterfinals four times. The quarter final against Hendon in 1965 setthe ground record, when 7301 supporters packed into HillheadsPark only to see Hendon win 3-1.

    1970’s

The early 1970’s saw Bay’s successes continue with the LeagueCup being won in 1970/71, and the County Cup in 1970/71 and1972/73. With the demise of amateur football the Club’sfortunes took a nosedive, culminating in them having to applyfor re-election to the League in 1979/80.

    1980’s

In 1987/88, with fortunes rising, the club joined the NorthernPremier League. In 1989/90 the Bay had their best ever run inthe FA Cup, when they reached the 3rd Round, going down 1-0at Rochdale, after a 1-0 win at then League side Scarborough, and in the 2nd Round defeating former winners Preston NorthEnd 2-0 in front of the BBC Match of the Day cameras.

    1990’s

The following season Whitley won not only the First Division Cupfor the second time but also the Championship and promotionto the Premier Division. They finished in 11th spot in the 1993/94season, their best position in the Premier Division. A decline infortunes followed during the later 90’s and in 2000 Whitley wererelegated back to the Northern League.

    2000’s

A new century marked the beginning of the most successfulperiod in the club’s history as they rose to national prominencewith record breaking achievements in the FA Vase. The 2001/02season proved to be one of the most memorable in the clubs’history when in only their second season in the competition andagainst all expectations they won the FA Vase at Villa Park, thanks to a spectacular Ian Chandler header in extra time againsttheir Eastern League opponents Tiptree United. Withexpectations high, things didn’t go to plan the following seasonand only 12 months after leading the team to Vase glory,Manager Andy Gowens resigned. The appointment of Ian Chandler as Manager in January 2004proved a masterstroke, with another Vase winner, Steve Cuggyreturning as coach. Few could have imagined the unprecedentedsuccess that would follow in the next seven years. In Ian Chandler’s first full season in charge Whitley won theNorthumberland Senior Cup and a respectable 5th place in theleague was also attained, but much more was to follow in2006/07 which was a season to savour for the fans as Whitleywon the league title on the final day of the season with a 3-1win at Durham City. The honours didn’t end there as goalkeeperTerry Burke was named Northern League Player of the Year withLee Kerr the Young Player of the Year, while Ian Chandler tookthe Manager of the Year award. As the only club to score morethan 100 league goals Whitley’s brand of exciting attacking playwas a joy to watch. In 2007/08 the highlight of the season came in the FA Vase whenWhitley reached the semi-final stage having beaten the holders

and hot favourites Truro City 3-0 in Cornwall. Another long tripin the quarter-finals took them to Hungerford Town where theywon 1-0. Disaster struck in the first leg of the semi final atLowestoft where a 4-0 win for the Trawlermen made them firmfavourites to go through but in a fantastic second leg Whitleywere three up after only 24 minutes but could not manage acrucial fourth. Both legs were played in front of just over 2000spectators. Off the field long serving Secretary Derek Breakwellwas presented with the Arthur Clark Memorial Trophy for hisservices to the Northern League. 2008/09 was a season that Bay fans will never forget. The FAVase once again took centre stage with Manchester side AbbeyHey being Whitley’s first opponents. The visitors went 2-0 upand only a late equaliser from Chris Moore took the game toextra time where Bay ran out 5-2 winners. Hard fought victoriesat Penrith and Bootle and then home wins against StratfordTown and Biggleswade Town took Whitley into the semi-final forthe second year running where they were once again paired withLowestoft. Bay had home advantage in the 1st leg and in front ofa crowd of 2,947 goals from Paul Chow and Lee Kerr gave thema 2-1 lead to take to Crown Meadow. In the 2nd leg a capacitycrowd of 2,250 saw Bay’s lead wiped out inside 3 minutes but anequaliser from Leon Ryan and a superb display from the wholeteam saw Whitley Bay become the first North East side to reachthe new Wembley where their opponents were Glossop NorthEnd from the North West Counties League. And what anoccasion it was. With 12,212 fans in the stadium goals from LeeKerr and Paul Chow (his 40th of the season) brought the FA Vaseback to Whitley Bay for the 2nd time in 7 years. Lee Kerr also wasvoted the Man of the Match.2009/10 was yet another memorable season with Whitleyfighting on four fronts for honours. Despite fixture congestioncounting against them, they won the Northumberland SeniorCup at St James Park, defeating Ashington 2-1. Whitley hadpreviously beaten a strong Newcastle United Reserve side in theSemi-Final. The Bay reached the semi final of the League Cup butwent down 2-1 to South Shields. For a third successive season, they finished 3rd in the league despite a backlog of fixtures dueto the severe winter weather.

But once again Wembley beckoned when after victories overAlsager Town, Boldmere St Michaels, Poole Town, Chertsey Town,Shildon and an epic two legged semi final against Barwell,Whitley Bay reached the FA Vase Final for the third time and forthe second successive season. This time Bay’s opponents wereWroxham from the Eastern Counties League. The thousands offans who made the trip from the north east to Wembley werecelebrating after only 21 seconds when Paul Chow tookadvantage of hesitation in the Wroxham defence to score thefastest goal ever seen in a Wembley Final. Although Wroxhamgot an equaliser, Whitley’s lead was soon restored when aRichard Hodgson free kick was turned into his own net by aWroxham defender. Lee Kerr's spectacular effort after just 50seconds of the second half ensured the Vase would be comingback to Whitley Bay for a record equalling third time. Furthergoals from Adam Johnston, Paul Robinson and Josh Gilliescompleted the 6-1 victory, the highest score in the history of theFA Vase Final. Paul Chow was also named Man of the Match.Last season again saw Whitley finish 3rd in the league, but onlygoal difference denied them runners up spot. Could they make itthree FA Vase wins in a row? It had never been done before anddespite comfortable home victories over AFC Liverpool andDunstable Town, several times it took late goals to keep Whitleyon course, notably at Herne Bay and Dunston. Inevitably, thesemi final was drama packed, as two very late goals, the secondin stoppage time, gave Whitley a crucial 2-1 lead to bring backfrom Poole Town. The return leg at Hillheads saw Poole take anearly lead but a Paul Chow hat trick sent the Bay back toWembley where Coalville Town gave Whitley their toughest testyet and an epic Final was decided by Paul Chow’s 86th minutewinner as Whitley triumphed 3-2. Chow, who had scored inevery round, and Kerr, had twice given Whitley the lead as theyboth set the remarkable record of scoring in three consecutiveVase Finals. A great display from keeper Terry Burke earned himthe man of the match award on his last appearance of anoutstanding career. And so Whitley Bay completed a record breaking hat trick ofVase successes and became the first team ever to win the trophyfour times.

  • ASHINGTON F.C. - BRIEF HISTORY BW17Mention Ashington to any football follower and the chances arethey will have heard of the birthplace of World Cup winningbrothers Bobby and Jackie Charlton. Jackie Milburn, a legend atNewcastle United also played for the town’s team, knownunsurprisingly as the Colliers. Ashington AFC was formed in 1883making it one of the oldest Clubs in Northumberland. Despite it’sminor status it entered the FA Cup as early as 1887. After joining theNorthern Alliance in 1892, the club soon switched to the EastNorthumberland League where it remained until 1902 when itreturned to the Northern Alliance. The Colliers played in this leagueuntil 1914, winning the League Title in 1913/14, as well as theNorthumberland Challenge Bowl in 1913. They switched to theNorth Eastern League in 1914/15, finishing the season in ninthplace. The outbreak of World War One brought an end to the League. With the Great War over, Ashington returned to the North EasternLeague. After finishing seventh in 1921, the Colliers were elected tojoin the Football League Third Division North with fellow NorthEastern League sides Darlington, Durham City and HartlepoolsUnited. In 1921 Portland Park was upgraded from a typical Non-League venue to a stadium designed for 20,000. It had a re-laidpitch, new pavilion, tearoom and large press box added, as well asnew signing Knowles from Manchester United. Thompson was alsosigned from Leeds and Foster was brought in from Sunderland.Ashington’s players were now ready for their professional debuts. An opening day crowd of 10,000 saw Dickinson fire in the only goalof the game, as Ashington defeated Grimsby Town 1-0 at home. Bythe end of the season the Colliers finished in a respectable 10thplace. After finishing second bottom the season after, Ashingtonwere successfully re-elected and finished the 1923/24 season in asuperb eighth position, hosting Aston Villa at home in the FA Cupwith a crowd of 11,837 packed into Portland Park, to see the Collierslose 5-1. The Colliers remained amongst the Country’s elite until the1928/29 season when a disastrous campaign saw the Colliers finishbottom and become one of the first clubs to miss out on re-election.A struggling team and the miner’s strike, hit the Colliers hard ascrowds dropped dramatically to under 1,000 for the final few homegames in the Football League. After losing League status, the Colliersreturned to the North Eastern League and reached the FA Cup firstround again, going down 3-0 to former Football League opponentsRotherham. With the War ended, Ashington returned to the NorthEastern League and again reached the FA Cup First Round in 1950,with Rochdale making the trip to Portland Park. A club recordattendance of 13,199 saw Ashington narrowly lose 2-1. When theNorth Eastern League folded Ashington joined the Midland Leaguefor the 1958/59 season. Ashington were runners-up toPeterborough United in their first season and were third in theirsecond season . Despite the success the amount of travellingbecame a big problem and Ashington joined the North RegionalLeague. The club then joined the Northern Premier League for the1968/69 season facing the likes of Macclesfield Town, WiganAthletic, Boston United, Altrincham and Northwich Victioria butfinancial problems meant the Colliers couldn't afford to play at thatlevel for more than the one season and in 1970 Ashington FC joinedthe Northern League. Ashington’s League form was hardly superb, but the Colliers did reach the FA Amateur Cup Semi-Final in 1974,

before losing to eventual winners Bishops Stortford in a replay atBrentford. After finishing third in 1979, Ashington were relegated tothe Northern League Second Division in 1984/85. The worst periodin the Club’s history followed as Ashington struggled, the club hitrock bottom in 1994 when they were unable to raise a team againstCrook Town resulting in the whole committee resigning. A publicmeeting saw a new committee formed and to celebrate, a group ofsupporters launched the highly acclaimed fanzine ‘The Pit PonyExpress’. Success soon switched to the team as the Colliers wontheir first trophy in 19 years, defeating Evenwood Town 1-0 in the1999 Craven Cup Final and winning the Second DivisionChampionship in 2000/2001. Relegation followed, but Ashingtonfans were soon celebrating again after winning the Craven Cup in2003 with another victory over Evenwood under new manager TonyHarrison. 2003/4 saw Ashington have one of it’s most successfulseasons in the past 25 years, an FA Cup run saw Ashington reachthe Third Qualifying Round, another Craven Cup final appearance, aswell as winning the Second Division Championship after a run of 18straight wins in 2004. After the shock resignation of Tony Harrisonin December 2004, ex-Shildon manager Ray Gowan was appointedmanager taking Ashington away from the relegation scrap and intoa top half finish by the end of the season as well as two cup semi-finals. Unfortunately a difficult few seasons followed both on andoff the pitch. A few close scrapes with relegation saw the clubfrequently changing managers and with increasing uncertaintysurrounding the clubs Portland Park ground, Ashington FC made theworst start to a season in the clubs history in 2007/8 which saw onlyone point gained from the first ten matches. In came manager AndyGowens, a former Ashington player, who worked wonders inkeeping the Colliers in the Northern League First Division. On Friday15th February 2008 Ashington played their final game at PortlandPark against Seaham Red Star. A bumper crowd of 1,954 - thebiggest attendance at a Northern League game in over 25 years -saw Seaham spoil the party with a 3-2 win. In the summer of 2008a new executive board took control of the club led by NationalUnion of Mineworkers President Ian Lavery. In early August 2008 thenew ground Woodhorn Lane was opened and on Saturday 30thAugust 2008, Ashington played their first game at the new grounddefeating UniBond League side Ossett Albion 2-1 in the FA Cup witha crowd of 341. Striker Gareth Bainbridge, scorer in the last match atPortland Park against Seaham Red Star had the honour of being thefirst goalscorer at Woodhorn Lane. A number of ex-Ashingtonplayers have gone on to make a name for themselves, not onlynationally but internationally. Patrick O'Connell, an Irishinternational centre-half signed from Dumbarton duringAshington's Football League days went on to manage Real Betis,Sevilla and FC Barcelona! More recently, in 1981 Tony Lowery wassold to West Bromwich Albion. Another player Dave Walton joinedSheffield United before joining Crewe, Shrewsbury and DerbyCounty. An England International also emerged from the clubs ranks– at cricket. Steve Harmison, ranked as the World’s best fast bowlerafter demolishing the West Indies as he took 7 wickets for only 12runs at Sabina Park, played central defence for Ashington until 1996before giving up to concentrate on cricket.
