    THE NUMBER OF LOW BIRTHWEIGHT(LESS THAN 2,500 GRAMS) INFANTS BORNTO TENNESSEE RESIDENTS WAS 7,535 IN2009. The low birthweight percentage of 9.2occurring in 2009 remained the same as thepercentage for 2008. In 2000, 3.0 percent oftotal births were multiple births, but thispercentage increased to 3.2 by 2009. Of thetotal multiple births in 2009, 60.7 percentwere low birthweight infants. This was a 2.9percent decrease from the percent (62.5) oflow weight multiple births in 2000.

    THE PERCENT OF BIRTHS TOUNMARRIED FEMALES BY AGE REVEALEDTHE HIGHEST PERCENTAGES FORFEMALES AGES 10 THROUGH 14 AND 15THROUGH 17. In 2009, 99.4 percent ofbirths to black females ages 10 through 17were to unmarried adolescents, compared to90.0 percent for unmarried white females.The percent of unmarried mothers for eachrace declined as the age of the motherincreased. The negative effects of births tounmarried adolescents include social andeconomic consequences resulting frominterruption of schooling.

    ADOLESCENT (10 THROUGH 17) BIRTHSBY RACE, REVEALED THE HIGHESTRATES PER 1,000 FEMALES WERE FORBLACK FEMALES FOR THE PERIOD 2000THROUGH 2009. The black adolescent birthrate of 16.3 was twice the white adolescentbirth rate of 7.7 in 2009. The total birth ratefor adolescents declined 26.7 percent from2000 to 2009, while the rates for whitefemales decreased 27.4 percent. For the ten-year period, the black adolescent birth ratedecreased 30.3 percent.

    TENNESSEE’S TOTAL BIRTH TREND INDICATES AGRADUAL DECLINE SINCE THE LATE 1940S WHEN THERATES WERE AT RECORD HIGHS. The 2009 total birth rateof 13.2 per 1,000 population decreased 5.0 percent from therate of 13.9 in 2008. The 2009 white rate (12.1) decreased6.9 percent from the previous year, and the 2009 black rate of16.7 decreased 5.6 percent. From 2000 to 2009, Tennessee’sadolescent birth rates decreased. Birth percentages forunmarried women, and multiple births increased during thesame period, while low birthweight percentages fluctuated.

    IN 2009, THERE WERE 82,109 TOTAL LIVE BIRTHS TOTENNESSEE RESIDENTS. Of the total, 61,082 or 74.4percent were white and 17,360 or 21.1 percent were blackbirths. There were 3,076 births to females ages 10 through17. This number represented an 11.6 percent decrease for thisage group from 2008. There were 8,514 births to females 35years and older. Births for this age group decreased 1.3 percentfrom the previous year.

    IN 2009, THE PERCENT OF TOTAL BIRTHS WITH FIRSTTRIMESTER PRENATAL CARE WAS 69.0. The percent of white birthswith first trimester care was 72.9, while the percent for black births was56.2 in 2009. (Percentages are based on births with prenatal carereported.) Tennessee’s percent of no care was 2.6, with white mothershaving the lowest percentage (1.7) of no care. The percent of blackmothers with no care was 5.8 in 2009.

    ADOLESCENTS (10 THROUGH 17) ANDMOTHERS AGED 40 YEARS AND OLDERFACE A GREATER RISK OF HAVING LOWBIRTHWEIGHT BABIES. In 2009, the lowbirthweight percentage of total births tomothers ages 10 through 17 was 10.7. Thiswas a 10.1 percent decrease from the lowbirthweight percentage of 11.9 in 2000. Thepercent of total births to mothers ages 40 yearsand older that were low birthweight (11.8)decreased 5.6 percent from 2000 to 2009.

    FOR THE YEARS 2000 THROUGH 2009, THE PERCENT OF BIRTHS TO UNMARRIED BLACKWOMEN WAS ALMOST TWICE THE TOTAL UNMARRIED PERCENTAGES AND WAS FROMTWO TO THREE TIMES THE PERCENTAGES FOR UNMARRIED WHITE MOTHERS. Totalbirths to unmarried women increased 28.6 percent from 2000 to 2009, while the increase forwhite women was 45.7 percent. For black women the percent increased from 72.3 in 2000 to78.6 in 2009.
