From the President

Looking AheadT he holiday season is here. It’s a time when we cele-

brate traditions with family and friends but also when we take a moment to look back at our accomplishments.

This year we reflect on one of WGBH’s finest milestones: In December 2009, our friends at 99.5 WCRB joined the WGBH family (page 27). In the decade since, 99.5 WCRB Classical Radio Boston has grown as the region’s source for 24/7 classical music, with 50 performances annually of our beloved Boston Symphony Orchestra—that’s more broadcasts of a local orchestra than

any other station in the country. WCRB also features events in WGBH’s Fraser Performance Studio, a state-of-the-art performance and recording facility that attracts world-class musicians and vocalists.

But the best is yet to come. “Our dedicated WCRB staff is working to expand our offerings online, provid-ing a listening experience for audiences that fits into their lives and connects them with more live, local

music,” says Anthony Rudel, 99.5 WCRB station manager. “WCRB on the air and online is a musical oasis to be enjoyed.”

And that oasis has something for everyone, from commuters seeking calm while driving in Boston traffic, to students finding focus while studying. And we regularly hear from them: “Every morning I listen to classical music before I go to school…” and “My mother was a classical pianist. As a child, I would sit under her grand piano and listen to Bach, Beethoven and Chopin. Now I listen to WCRB and relive those enchanting musical moments.”

From teachers to grandparents, those who have just discovered their love of classical music to those who have been devoted enthusiasts for years, WCRB accompanies all the moments of our lives and is creating new ways to share the rich history and tradition of great composers with the next generation.

Also celebrating its 10th anniversary is WGBH News, one of the fastest growing local news providers in Greater Boston. Our newsroom draws on the talent of multiplatform journalists working around the clock covering essential local news on 89.7 WGBH radio and streaming on wgbh.org. We expanded our presence in the community last year with the opening of our Dorchester Bureau (page 26).

As we begin 2020, we are focused on the exciting opportunities ahead, and we are grateful for your continued support that makes them possible.

Wishing you a happy holiday season and a peaceful new year.

Bringing You the WorldWorld Channel tells stories that humanize complex issues. World shares the best of public media in news, documentaries and fact-based informational programming that help us understand conflicts, movements and cultures

that may be distinct from our own. World’s original content offers a national platform to filmmakers examining issues too often ignored by mainstream media. These emerging and master filmmakers spotlight a diversity of voices, telling stories not heard elsewhere. World has won a Peabody Award, an Alfred I. duPont-Columbia Award and numerous national honors—including an RTNDA Kaleidoscope Award, a Media for a Just Society Award, two Lesbian and Gay Journalist Awards, a Gracie and an Asian American Journalists Award. Carried by 159 partner stations in markets representing almost 66% of US TV house-holds, World can also be experienced via WorldChannel.org and social media platforms. The theme for December is religion and spirituality.

Beyond StereotypesNearly two decades after the Sept. 11 attacks, American Muslims still face an uphill battle among their fellow citizens. The current political climate has led to a saturation of negative images that have made Muslims the target of

suspicion and hostility. Created by Tufts University alum Joshua Seftel, this first-person series uses humor and empathy to subvert stereotypes and reveal the truth about American Muslims—that they are a diverse group of indi-viduals with fascinating careers, unexpected talents and inspiring accomplishments.

Local, USA/Secret Lives of Muslims Mon, 12/9 at 9pm

In SolidarityLarycia Hawkins was the first black woman to receive tenure at Wheaton College, an evangelical school outside of Chicago. In December 2015, she wanted to show support for Muslim women, so she announced on Facebook that she would wear a hijab during Advent, saying that Christians and Muslims worship the same God. Within days, the college placed her on leave and moved to dismiss her. This docu-mentary shows how rifts over race and religious freedom can consume a campus and a nation. World is produced and distributed by WGBH Boston, American Public Television and WNET/New York in association with PBS and the National Educational Telecommunications Association.

No Simple TaskIn the lawless province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, control of a porous border area is of utmost importance to global security. Should Pakistan, a nuclear power, fall into the hands of ter-rorists, the entire world will be at risk. This Emmy Award-winning film shows firsthand the danger-

ous struggle undertaken by the men of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Bomb Disposal Unit, stationed on the front lines of the war against al-Qaida and the Taliban in Pakistan. Laying their lives on the line, they strive to save humanity —one bomb at a time. Armed with FaithSun, 12/15 at 10pm

A Path to PeaceExplore the history of this ancient symbol called a labyrinth and the powerful effect it can have on people’s lives. This film presents stories of adults, teenagers and children who walk the Washington, DC-area labyrinths for healing, meditation and stress reduction. Witness how individu-als who battle PTSD, depression and doubt can travel on these circular pathways and embark on personal journeys of physical and emotional self- discovery. It all starts with a single step.Labyrinth Journeys Mon, 12/16 at 9pm

experiences taped in front of a live audience at the WGBH Studios in Brighton. Don’t miss these real-life tales about how to deal with the unexpected!Stories from the Stage/Special OccasionsMon, 12/16 at 9:30pm

Boston’s Local NPR®

R eporter Saraya Wintersmith joined WGBH News to lead the new Dorchester Bureau in May 2018. Below, she describes her career and

experience developing a beat in Dorchester, Mattapan and Roxbury.

What has it been like to move to a new community and build a neighborhood beat?If you’re going to tell people what is going on in their neighborhood, you need to make time to talk to the people who live there. As soon as I arrived in Fields Corner, I started reaching out to community leaders to intro-duce myself. I asked them what stories they

felt were important and what hadn’t been covered. Dorchester is an old, established and proud place, so it takes time to become part of the communi-ty. It was also important to me that I live in Dorchester. I have never reported in a place where I don’t live.

What was the community feedback about story topics?People want to hear the fullness of what is happening in the southern neigh-borhoods of Boston—not just shootings or violence. But what are the positive things that people are doing? What are the problems that local organizations are helping to solve?

What’s a favorite story that you’ve worked on at WGBH?I had an opportunity to report on a student competition at the Helen Davis Leadership Academy in celebration of Black History Month. One of the seventh- grade girls told me that the competition made her want to research her ancestors. She said that since people sacrificed to make pathways for black

Sacred SoundsDuring his lifetime, Duke Ellington com-posed thousands of musical scores, but he considered his Three Sacred Concerts among his most important work. The concerts—recorded in 1965, 1968 and 1973—were performed in houses of worship and included

guest vocalists and even a tap dancer. Host Eric Jackson devotes an entire show to the jazz legend’s spiritual compositions, guaranteed to strike the right chord for the holidays.Sun, 12/22 at 9pm

people, the least she can do is learn their names. My editor, WGBH News Senior Editor Ken Cooper, is a black man in his 60s. As a young man, people laughed at him when he said he wanted to be a foreign correspondent. When he heard the audio of that young girl speaking, he was moved. I was moved too.

What’s different about working at WGBH News? There were only two full-time employees at my last station, so I did every-thing and always on a tight deadline. At WGBH there are specialists through-out the newsroom related to web, social media, photography, television, etc. Having an editor to bounce ideas off of and help me distill my language has also been a tremendous resource. There’s really a lot of opportunity here.

Happy Anniversary and Happy HolidaysBy Anthony Rudel, 99.5 WCRB Station Manager

T his season, we have even more to celebrate. On Dec. 1, 2009, WGBH officially acquired WCRB, and today we mark the

10th anniversary of that important event. Ten years later, we can proudly note that WCRB Classical Radio Boston is the region’s leading 24/7 source of classical music, playing more music than any other station. Of the 168 hours we’re on the air each week, WCRB programs, produces and hosts 167 hours, which gives the station its live and local feel and connects us with the audience we love to serve.

WCRB is the hub of the vibrant music community that exists in the Boston area, and we work closely with local presenters and music groups to bring the finest performances to the air and online. Even more important, the incredible music that is the backbone of what we bring to the community provides a listening experience that is both engaging and calming—a fact borne out by comments donors made during a recent pledge drive.

So, instead of having me tell you why WCRB is so valuable, here’s a small sample of what our listeners have said:

“I listen to WCRB everyday while at work. It keeps me focused and calm. So grateful for this great station and all the great music.”

“WCRB is both a lifeblood and an elixir. Curated music is always the best, and I, for one, am deeply grateful. Play on!”

“WCRB rejuvenates my spirit throughout the day!”

As we mark this important anniversary and look ahead to many more decades of being the best home for music, we thank you for your support and want to wish you and yours a healthy and happy holiday season and new year. What’s on WCAI Online: capeandislands.orgOn-air: 90.1 Martha’s Vineyard, 91.1 Nantucket, 94.3 Brewster, 89.7 HD3 Boston

A lmost every science story is a local story at WCAI’s home office in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, neighbor to some of the world’s most prestigious

research institutions, such as the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and the Marine Biological Laboratory. And on the Cape, Coast and Islands, one of

the biggest local stories is climate change. WCAI science reporter Heather

Goldstone (left) has good reason to think she has a handle on climate change. After all, she has Ph.D. in ocean science. But an interview with a fisheries expert in Woods Hole shocked her. “He told me how much the warmer water had already impacted seafood. I was completely floored,” she says. “I thought if I was surprised, our audience needed to know about this.”

That has been her mission ever since—converting her scientific curiosity into stories that prompt listeners to think about big ideas. She hosts Living Lab Radio, which explores the intersection of science and society. It can be heard via podcast or Mondays on WCAI. She also visits with WGBH’s Morning Edition once a week and is often heard on NPR.

Eve Zuckoff, a WCAI climate change reporter who works closely with Goldstone, is similarly hooked on storytelling. Both of her parents were journalists, and inquisitiveness and stories “are the water I swam in as a child,” she says.

WCAI listeners are deeply interested in the natural world and in the environment across the globe, the reporters say. “We see climate change in our backyards,” says Zuckoff, adding that rising sea levels are uppermost in residents’ minds.

The pair monitor social media to discover what their audience is interested in. “I was struck by how many people here on Cape Cod were talk-ing about the Amazon wildfires,” says Zuckoff. “I discovered that researchers at the Oceanographic Institution have been studying wildfires for 25 years.”

For both Zuckoff and Goldstone, the bottom line is meeting audiences where they are. “The thing that I hear the most when I’m reporting and talking to people is, ‘we want to keep this special place special.’”
