10 NEWS/ADVERTISING TUESDAY, DECEMBER 23 2008 BY MAIREAD O’SHEA A WARM-HEARTED Boyle couple decided to embrace the Christmas spirit when they donated the proceeds from their recent joint 50th birthday party to the Jack and Jill Children’s Foundation. Ann and Francis Walshe from The Plains, Boyle held a joint 50th party in the Four Provinces, Rathallen on November 14th last. Ann turned 50 on August 27th while her husband Francis celebrat- ed his birthday on November 13th so they decided to hold a joint birthday party, all for a worthy cause. The couple asked their guests to make a donation on the night of the party to the Jack and Jill Foundation instead of receiving presents. They were overwhelmed with the generosity of people and the final total collect- ed was an impressive 4,501. The couple were helped in their task by their six daughters. Ann is a well-known fig- ure in the local communi- ty, working in the local Credit Union in Boyle as well as serving as a par- ents’ representative on Roscommon VEC. The couple were moved to donate the proceeds from their birthday party to the Jack and Jill Foun- dation as their two-year- old neighbour Tommy receives nursing care from the Foundation. “We have a very special little boy called Tommy aged two living beside us, who receives nursing care from the Foundation. We would be very close to the family and our daughter Rachael is one of the car- ers for Tommy so we wanted to do something to help raise money for the Foundation. We hope that with the funds raised, 4,501, it will help bring another Jack and Jill baby home to its family,” said Ann. A total of 4,301 was raised on the night of the party and three donations were also sent directly to the Foundation, bringing the total to 4,501. The Walshe couple also extended thanks to every- one who attended the recent birthday party, especially those who trav- elled long distances and the management and staff of the Four Provinces for the use of their premises. The Jack and Jill Foun- dation provides early intervention home respite to families with children up to the age of four with severe developmental delay who require extend- ed care. It helps to sup- port families who find themselves in a situation with a very sick new baby or older child and it pro- motes the best quality of life for all concerned. It provides home visits by its liaison officer. To meet the needs of families the Foundation has to raise2.2million per year. It also acts as advocate for families, for example helping them to get the carer’s allowance, a medical card, correct housing, special equip- ment or a primary med- ical certificate. These are all due to eligible children but are very often delayed until the intervention of the Foundation. Since 1997 the Founda- tion has assisted over 850 children and their families all over Ireland. The Jack and Jill Foundation was recognised as Children’s Charity of the Year in 2003 and in 2004 the founder had the honour of receiv- ing the prestigious ESB/ Rehab Irish Personality of the Year award for his work with the Foundation. Ann also pointed out that the Foundation col- lects old mobiles, ink car- tridges, computers etc for recycling. The following businesses in Boyle are currently recycling for the Foundation: Boyle Credit Union Ltd, Trojan, Abbey Community College and Abbey College PLC centre, Purcell Print and Ahern’s Accountants. Ann has appealed to other busi- nesses in Boyle and throughout County Roscommon to recycle in aid of the Jack and Jill Foundation. She also had a special word of praise for the students at Abbey Community College as they are making a real effort to recycle in their bid to obtain a Green Flag for the school. Ann also praised her colleagues in Boyle Credit Union as they made a tremendous effort to collect a large selection of cartridges for recycling.
