Bubbles Narbey thought the last ring given to her by her late-husband had been lost forever. But thanks to one Rich-mond Mall shopper it was returned to its grateful owner.Shopping in Richmond before Christmas, the Nelson resi-dent believes two of her rings had fallen from her fingers when trying on clothes in the mall.Bubbles always wear gold rings because they help with arthritis, she says. But these two rings in particular had more of a senti-mental value.Desperate phone calls to Rich-mond businesses where she had visited were welcomed by help-ful locals keen to track down the missing ring, but it was nowhere to be seen. Until days later when she re-ceived a phone call from the customer service desk saying two rings have been handed in. Bubbles was overjoyed when she

received the phone call, confirming the the two rings were found in Farmers. “We rang everywhere we went. Everyone was very nice. My husband was with me when they were bought and this was the last one he bought me,” she says. “I was quite upset. I know they’re only things but deep down I must be a bit sentimental.”

The finder of the rings did not leave their contact details, but Bubbles says she couldn’t thank them enough. “I’m so grateful to whoever found my two rings. I hope they rewarded themselves in some way.”Richmond Mall manager David Hill says it was great that the mall had all the right systems in place to find the ring, and acknowledged the efforts of the Farmers staff. He says he would like to invite Bubbles back to the mall for a coffee and a piece of slice to celebrate the reunion.

TUESDAY 10 January 2012

The Richmond Races continued to add to its reputation as one of the region’s premier events with another “hugely successful” meet on Friday and Sunday.Among the highlights was a new course record for fastest time, as well as around $2.3 million go-ing through the TAB by those backing the horses and a huge number of entrants to the Fashion in the Field. But for committee member Bill Monk the roar of the crowd was what put a smile on his face.“To hear the roar is just amazing, it’s so loud

and not many other places get into the racing as much as the Nelson crowd, it’s a real highlight.”The annual meet, one of two hosted by the Nel-son Harness Racing Club, is held over two days, bringing horses, owners and some of the coun-try’s best drivers from around the South Island. Bill says the total number of punters has yet to be calculated but both days enjoyed strong num-bers.The races also host numerous free activities for children and runs the Richmond Mall Fashion in the Field competition. This year’s winners were Ryan Charles and Fleur Schouten, both of Nel-son. Ryan says he only entered to support his

wife and after she took part in the ladies section. “I just flat out said no to begin with. But I thought it was something that I ordinarily wouldn’t do and it’d throw me out of my comfort zone a bit.”Both Ryan and Fleur won Richmond Mall vouchers and other goodies.Bill says feedback from those attending the event was excellent.“I heard the comment a number of times on Sun-day night that the event was ‘the best races ever’. That’s nice to hear but it’s because of the hard work of the committee, sponsor support and people turn-ing up that makes it so wonderful.”* More races news on page 19, in sport.

Rutherford Park will be Nelson’s ‘Central Park’Work has started on developing “Nelson’s equivalent” to New York’s Central Park, with a master plan now drawn up, says Nel-son City Council. The plan for Rutherford Park, the land around Trafalgar Centre, has been devel-oped but council says it is by no means set in concrete and they would like to hear from ratepayers about what they would like to see in the area. NCC will host a workshop on the 26 and 27 of this month providing people an opportunity to have their say.The area is seen as key, strategically, by coun-cil as it will provide green space linking the CBD to the waterfront. Among the proposed additions to the area will more walkways, parks, improved access to Trafalgar Centre and car parking. The redevelopment will mean major changes for some clubs in the area including some that may need to move location, including possibly the Marist Rugby Club and Nelson Rifle Club. NCC Parks and recreation manager Andrew Petheram says the project will be a long-term one, similar to how Saxton Field has been developed, with changes along the way. “Depending on what the community’s needs and wants are, this plan is flexible. The redevelopment of the northern end of Trafalgar Centre [this year] is the first step.”Planning advisor Britta Hietz says the area is as important to

Nelson as Central Park is to New York City. “It will give vital green space around the CBD and will attract all sorts of people. It is very important, that is why we would like to hear from local people about what they want there.”

Council says it has already been in talks with a number of the clubs in the area about their future, and would like to see some sports combining for a joint facility, simular to the Saxton Field model. Building on the land does come with several major problems though, the biggest being the unstable foundation that the area sits on. Rutherford Park is predominantly under-lain by reclaimed land identified as hard and domestic fill. Layers of rubbish mixed with soil are beneath the surface and the ground is continuously moving as the rubbish layers decompose below it. It also means the land is susceptible to flooding. Andrew says some of the landfill is toxic so extra care needs to be taken when develop-ing it. “Those are things we have taken into con-sideration, about how best to manage it. It is unlikely we will try to remove it, the risk of it spilling into the waterways is too great.”

The public workshops will follow on from the similar work-shops that were planned for late December, but due to the poor weather those who designed the plans were unable to land in Nelson and the meetings were cancelled. For more information on the plan visit www.ncc.govt.nz.

TUESDAY 10 January 2012This Week 5

The sunniest of them allWhakatane mayor Tony Bonne is due to fly into Nelson on Friday to offically conceed defeat in the sunshine race to his counterpart, Aldo Miccio.Nelson’s final memories of 2011 may not concur, but the city has reclaimed its title as the sunniest place in New Zealand, it was confirmed last week.In the space of two weeks Nelson set two records: the city with the heaviest rainfall in New Zealand history and the city with the highest sunshine hours. The sunshine record is one Nelsonians will take far more pleasure out of though, after losing its crown to Whaka-tane in 2010. Whakatane finished third with Tekapo in second. But the rain, which caused millions of dollars’ worth of damage in the final weeks of 2011, did its best to also take the sun title from Nelson. At the start of December Nelson held sunshine hour lead of almost 100, but the end of the year it had been reduced to just 24 hours. But a win is a win and Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio says he’s thrilled that the title has rightfully been returned to the sunshine city. “It’s what we’re known for and why people come to visit us, so it’s great to say that we are once again the sunniest.”Tony is due to meet Aldo on Friday to hand back a sun-hat that was given to him by Aldo, says Nelson Tasman Tourism CEO Lynda Keene. "Upon winning the highest sunshine hour title last year, Mayor Bonne sent Aldo a can of Whakatane sunshine. It's all in good heart," she says.Aldo says he has a year's worth of pent-up sun banter to throw the way of the Bay of Plenty town and its mayor. "We see each other at meetings and he always chucks in a little joke so it will be good to give it back," he laughed. It is understood One News will be on hand to report the handover of the hat.

Jazz festival still hits the right notes with fansTWINKLE TOES: Tony Davies and Judy Crowe dance in 1903 Square as the Nelson Big Band plays during the Nelson Jazz Festival last week. Photo: Andrew Board.

The new director of the Nelson Jazz Festival says a strong turnout from locals ensured it was one of the best yet and had "probably more of a com-munity feel than ever before".The Nelson Jazz Festival celebrated its 21st year over the past week with 50 concerts being held in parks, wineries

and bars all over the region.Poor weather hampered the earlier concerts but as the weather got bet-ter so did the crowds, says festival di-rector Liam Ryan. "It was a brilliant festival and we are very happy with it. The musicians loved it and the audi-ence really got into it. By the end of

the festival we had huge crowds."The festival is hosted by the Nelson Jazz Club and around 50 members spent days volunteering their time to ensure its success, says Liam. The festival is also supported by Nel-son City and Tasman District Coun-cils and a long list of sponsors.

New screen a hit for old moviesHours upon hours of watching silent black and white film has given Antony Hodgson an appreciation for classic cinema, an appreciation he is sharing with Nelson this summer as the Solar-City Summer Movies hit parks and re-serves across the Nelson region, with a brand new screen to boot.Isle Park played host to the new 7000 ANSI Lumens High Definition Projec-tor on Friday night as the summer series moves around the region from Tahuna to Takaka and Tapawera. As dusk fell on a somewhat gloomy night the field in front of Isel House was packed with people braving the weather to watch

‘Silent Antics’ from the masters of slap-stick; Harold Lloyd, Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton and Laurel & Hardy.Picnic dinners, camping chairs and aperitifs were in abundance but those that bought bean bags, pajamas and blankets looked the most cozy. With the outdoor movies now in their 17th year the combination of a relaxed atmos-phere, gold coin entry fee and classic cinema has proved a winning formula.“I spent many a late night watching videos from Aro Valley Video, sitting through hours of silent film to come up with my favorites to share with every-one, so I hope you like it,” says Antony.

Grey Power: Flood them with emailsThe proposed closure of a discount pharmacy has led the local Grey Power president to declare a call-to-arms of sorts.Gordon Currie says many Grey Power members use the Warehouse Pharmacy because it is the cheapest in town and its proposed closure at the end of January will hurt them. He says he has received plenty of phone calls from Grey Power members upset with its clo-sure so he is urging them to follow the lead of Blenheim customers who emailed head office en masse and were granted “a stay of execution”.The Warehouse is closuring its six Pharmacy’s nationwide but it appears the Blenheim store will continue to operate. The Warehouse pharmacist national manager Trevor Lloyd says it is never too late to petition for the Nelson store to remain open.“Blenheim was performing really well and Nel-son does have other issues, like it would have to move the pharmacy in the store, but there is al-ways a chance,” he says.Gordon says if users of the Warehouse Pharma-cy want it bad enough they should “flood them with emails” and hope for Nelson’s own stay of execution.“From my understanding, the Warehouse re-ceived a lot of feedback from Blenheim peo-ple but they were surprised that they didn’t get much from Nelson. I told them it’s because I’ve been getting it all. I’ve spoken with them and I now urge people who would like to see it stay open to email them directly.”If you would like the Pharmacy to stay open email [email protected].

Got News?

When Lizz Johnston inked a letter to Ger-many as a 13 year-old, she never expected it would lead to a 60 year friendship.Lizz, now 71 years-old, has been a pen pal with Sigrid Gallas for 59 years, making it one of her longest friendships, says the Nelson resident.Lizz was at school in Scotland where her German teacher decided to put all of the students in touch with pupils of a school in Germany. “I was up for that. I thought it’d

be neat,” she says, looking back on when the friendship first began. The first letter introduced who she was, explained simple notes of her life and was written in the German language. Lizz spoke of her main hobbies, which, at the time, included a strong passion for cycling and arts. The reply, in English, detailed a similar scenario of a girl in Dusseldorf. “It was a very long time ago. But it was just everyday things. We gradually just got to know each other a lot more.”

The letters to each other continued, along with photos of one another, even if they were on an irregular basis and now all in English due to Segrid’s fluency of the lan-guage.Segrid married early and in 1961 when Lizz was visiting the German city on a cy-cle tour she went and stayed with her and her family, meeting for the first time. The pair hit it off and it wasn’t long before Lizz returned, this time visiting with her boyfriend. The two always had plenty in common,

even through the tough times they were united by similar circumstances. Segrid had a baby boy that was born with hydroceph-alus, water in the brain. He was one of the first people to get an operation called the shunt. Many years later Lizz’s third child contracted menigitis, which had a side effect of hyrdocepha-lus. “We’ve got that much in common it’s just un-canny.”Lizz says Segrid was al-ways better at sending letters on a more regular basis, although she admits there were times the pair would go years without keeping in contact. How-ever, a letter would always turn up eventually. The latest message from Germany arrived near Christmas and was an an-nual photograph sent by Segrid of herself and hus-band Peter.

Lizz admits with the way technology has developed, that pen pals are probably a rare breed in a world of email and social networking. But the two women still stick to their letters, which may be Segrid’s influ-ence. “She’s just not into it, which is awk-ward because I’ve got the computer and I could email. But they haven’t got the same at the other end. I’ve been doing pottery for years and my cartilage has given up in my thumb joints so I don’t find it easy to write anymore.” So Lizz, instead, types up her letters on the computer, prints them out and then sends them away.Lizz has visited Segrid five times, and Seg-rid once came to Scotland. Lizz is still hop-ing for another visit, but this time to New Zealand. But Peter doesn’t fly. “If he goes anywhere he has to drive. So when I went to visit them with my daughter they drove to the airport to pick us up and it’s quite a drive. He just loves driving. But that does mean they’ve never been to New Zealand, which is a shame because they’d love it. I doubt they’ll ever get here, but I’d like to think they will. If not them, then maybe one of their daughters or granddaughters.” Lizz didn’t know anyone else in her class that had kept in touch with their pen pal for this long. “We’ve been corresponding all that time and she’s kept every letter I’ve sent her.”She says the best part about meeting Seg-rid was getting to know another culture. “There’s different foods, different habits, but there’s still that human contact.”Another letter looks set to leave Nelson addressed to Germany later this month, packed with it a clipping from this news-paper, telling Lizz’s story of her friendship that started with a piece of paper and a pen way back in 1953.

A fire that appears to have been deliberately lit was mere minutes away from destroying a Richmond business, says its owner and the fire service.Businesswoman Lydia Heyward received a phone call shortly after 4am on New Year’s Day to say the back of her Queen St-based real es-tate business had been set on fire. The fire caused thousands of dol-lars’ worth of damage and cut phone lines for several Richmond businesses for more than a day. It also melted cables, destroyed aluminium joinery and plumbing. Work to repair the damage was still ongoing this week.Richmond fire chief Ralph Lons-dale says the building was just min-utes away from being totalled.“It could have been disastrous; we arrived just in the nick of time.”The alarm was raised by members of the Richmond Community Pa-trol who were out keeping an eye on the town in the early hours of the morning. Lydia says she was gutted when she arrived to see the fire service put-ting out the fire. “I was really disappointed, it’s a new building and it’s just such a shame

that it happened and I’m disap-pointed that there are people out there that could do that. If the com-munity patrol had been five min-utes later [in reporting the fire] it could have been really serious.”The intensity of the fire was so great it melted the glass sitting in the building.Nelson CIB detective Kelvin Hei-ford says an investigation into the fire is still ongoing and they have several positive leads but say if any-one has any information about the fire, to get in touch. “There were a lot of people hanging around that time of the morning so if anyone has some information we would certainly be happy to know about it. But the investigation is continuing and we hope to have some positive results in the next couple of days.”This isn’t the first time a Queen St business has been the victim of a likely arson; in 2010 Boutereys Res-taurant was also set on fire, causing minor damage to the back of the restaurant. But Ralph says there has been little in the way of deliberately lit fires since then and this appears to be an isolated incident. To contact Kelvin with informa-tion, call his direct line on 546 3861.

New Years fire for real estate firm

When Paul and Marie Farrar emigrated from Britain a number of years back there wasn’t enough space in the shipping containers to take everything, but you can bet the vintage Triumphs made the cut. “When we came out we left a lot of the furniture behind, but the bikes were the first to be loaded in,” says Marie. The Farrar’s bikes were on show as part of the

Nelson Classic and Vintage Motorbike Club’s an-nual show at the Stoke Memorial Hall.Nintey seven bikes were displayed, making for one of the best shows yet with around 2000 peo-ple going through the gate, says orgainser Peter Wood. “It was a little crowded at times with all the people, plus 97 bikes. But it was great to see everyone enjoying themselves.”

Families who have seen the future of their homes in doubt since last month’s floods are anxious to get back in and bring back normality in their lives, they say.One hundred and twenty homes had red stick-ers slapped on their front door after the slips and floods caused millions of dollars’ worth of damage to Nelson in mid-December. Many have since had the sticker replaced with a Build-ing Notice Number 124, which means the property cannot be occupied due to safety concerns. The notices also include spe-cific information on what is required to restore the safety of the property. In the case of one Wake-field Quay family the no-tice means a lot of uncer-tainty.Liz and John Bewley were told to pack a bag and leave their home by po-lice during the rain. It was subsequently red-stick-ered. They have stayed with family and friends since and are currently house sitting their neigh-bour’s home. They say the slips were scary at the time but now the frustration of not being allowed back home is the toughest thing they face. “When the police said we better leave at around six [o’clock] in the morning I looked out the window and the bank was moving, slowly slipping down. It was very

scary,” says Liz.However, their house didn’t move and land in front of the house is intact. They had slips on ei-ther side of them but not on their property. Liz has lived on the land since 1963 and John says he had no concerns about living on the hill. “When the house was built we used tiebacks and had it all tested, it is very sturdy and I have

no problems about being back in there. They’re be-ing on the safe side which we can understand that but how far do you go? We understand it could have involved our section but it didn’t.”Although fully insured, there has been no damage to their house so even if their land is condemned, which is certainly a worst case scenario, they would still have costs on a house they cannot live in. “Go-ing on what we hear, we should be alright, but that is scary to think about.”The Bewley’s are hoping to get some good news this week after a visit from a geotech.

But Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio says it could take up to a year for some residents to get back in their homes. “Everyone is working hard and is keen to get people back in their homes but it is now between homeowners, their insurers and EQC and homeowners need to work through that process.”

Audiences can expect a wild ride at the 50th Anniversary Jubilee Rodeo on Saturday January 14 at the A&P Showground. From 12pm there will be an action packed afternoon with plenty to do and see, with top quality rodeo cowboys, entertainers and lots of attractions for the kids. Record numbers of entrants have been attracted, as the prize money was increased in honour of the 50th Anniversary.

Many of the best cowboys are coming from all over New Zealand, some of whom have competed internationally. The Richmond Rodeo makes up part of the national circuit to compete for the national title, so they will all be riding at their best to claim the title as well as please the crowds. The 8 second bulls will be back to form the open division this year, with about 20 bulls coming up from

Rangiora. These bulls have been bred specifically for Rodeo riding and have earned their title from their ability to quickly unseat anyone who dares ride them. The crowds are sure to get plenty of thrills watching the brave cowboys take on these fearsome beasts. Around 40 bulls make up the second division provided by a local stock contractor.Waimate Rodeo Club is sending over 20 horses to create an open bronco division for the first time. In honour of the 50 Anniversary Jubilee, Richmond Rodeo Club has pulled out all the stops to provide the best entertainment for the crowds and top quality animals for the cowboys who have been drawn from all over the country to compete. The second division will be comprised of broncos from Richmond Rodeo Club themselves, and Tina Angus-Phyn says the riders will be impressed with the local stock. The adrenaline pumping Rodeo riders won’t be the only attraction on the day, with plenty of other entertainers as well as attractions for the children’s enjoyment. Barrel Races are a great opportunity for local pony clubs and adult riders to join in the fun of the rodeo and provide more excitement

for the audience. For the little ones, there are sheep and calf rides that are sure to be a crowd pleaser again this year.Crowds can expect to be amazed, amused and entertained with the antics of Festus the Rodeo Clown as well as music from the Rhymestone Cowboy. The Rhymestone Cowboy is currently recording a new album, and says that the audience can expect to “get a sneak peak of the future of the Rhymestone Cowboy”, as he will be performing several of his new tracks on the day. He says he has even changed the chorus lyrics of one of his songs specifically for the crowds at the Richmond Rodeo. For the children there will be mini jeeps and a merry

You can pre-purchase tickets at the information desk in Richmond Mall, or they will be sold at the gate on the day. Tickets are only $15 for adults, $5 for students between 5 and 15, and under 5’s enter free. The fun doesn’t end when the rodeo does, with Club Waimea hosting the 50th Jubilee After Rodeo Party.

For the children there will be mini jeeps and a merry

go round. More FM are going to be running a lolly scramble for the kids and JBC Shows will be providing moving ping pong clowns as well as a jumping castle. For children and teenagers, they are also setting up a 40 foot Giant Shark Slide, giving four stories of fun. If watching the rodeo riders works up an appetite, there will be many food stalls, including the perpetual favourites of hot dogs and ice cream.

This is a great chance for locals to get to meet some fair dinkum cowboys - get in line, ladies! From 8.30pm a new

local band called Summer Sons will be taking the stage. Come along to see the Nelson born band taking their hometown by storm. Door entry is $5 and is available to everyone. The Richmond Rodeo is sure to be a great day of entertainment, thrills and spills for the whole family. Come along to the A&P Showgrounds on January 14 to join the fun.

It was a busy welcome to the New Year for the city's police officers, with 49 arrests being made on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.The high number of arrests is normal for local police over the holiday with almost half being alcohol-related incidents.Around 20 people were arrested for breach of the liquor ban, by carrying opened bottles or cans of alcohol in areas of the city where it is prohibitied.Nelson Bays Acting Area Commander Inspec-tor Ross Lienert says he was much happier with the behaviour of Nelsonians and visitors to the

region over the holiday period. He says arrests for disorderly-type behaviour were on par with previous years. The big disappointment for police was the large number of people caught drink-driving.Ross says police nationally had worked hard pri-or to the holiday period to ensure people were aware of the risks of drinking and driving. "In Nelson Bays a number of people have continued to ignore that message and have subsequently risked their own and other innocent members of the public's lives. That is very disappointing."

Art Group Nelson artist Murray Campbell’s true passion is Model Railways, a hobby that didn’t sur-face until “three years after we were married”, says wife and fellow artist Judy. Art was never a part Murray’s en-vironment or interest until he de-cided to join Judy on an art tui-tion course "for a holiday", but by morning tea on the first day he was hooked, says Judy.Murray and Judy are among the 50 local artists exhibiting at Art Group Nelson’s annual summer art exhibi-tion at Queen’s Gardens this week-end. Paintings, glass, wood ware, garden art and much more will be on show and available for purchase this Saturday and Sunday from 10am – 4pm with the weekend of 21 and 22 reserved if the weather doesn’t play its part. After discovering the “agony and ecstasy of painting” Murray now combines his scenic painting of the South Island’s mountains and lakes

with his love of Model Railways. Many a train room both here in Nelson and around the country fea-tures Murray's painted back-scenes with his latest measuring 3.5 by 1.2 meters.Judy’s love of art was fostered throughout her life by some great artistic talents, originally by Gwen Rew, an artist and teacher, who came to live on her family farm when Judy was 12. More recently the tuition of Graham Braddock has helped to develop Judy’s affin-ity with watercolour pastels and oils. Judy will have her weaved wall hangings called ‘Paintings in Wool’ available at the exhibition.Judy says retiring to Nelson in 1994 gave her and Murray the time to enjoy the luxury of discretionary time together. Being involved in the art community they have met and enjoyed the company of many in-teresting and talented people. “The creative and beautiful environment is everything one could wish for, and boredom has no place in this lovely city,” says Judy.

SPORT IN BRIEF

rUgbY: Nelson College rugby star Steven Soper may not be able to take part in the 2012 season after snapping his leg at training last week. The strapping flanker had been named in a national secondary school squad to train with sevens coach Gordon Titjens this week and had been aiming for national honours with the secondary school team later this year. But he will instead be re-focusing on gettting fit again after undergoing surgery at Nelson Hospital last Friday.

rUnning: In 1994 the Nelson Striders made international press when, while out for their Sunday pack run up the Maitai Valley, a wild boar sent them scurrying up a steep bank to avoid an extremely agitated attack. Dam care-taker, Trevor Ruffell, came to their rescue by killing the beast with his bare hands in the nearby river. Now the animal’s remains are mounted, and are becoming one of the region’s most sought after athletic trophies; The Boar’s Jaw. To win it runners and walkers must com-plete the annual half marathon along the pic-turesque course in the confines of the valley. But the twist is the fastest is not rewarded with the trophy. Instead it’s won by whoever paces themselves closest to their estimate without a watch for 21.1km. Stu Cottam was exact in 1998 and came back last year for his second engraving on the honours board just seven seconds adrift of his estimate. Full details on www.nelsonevents.co.nz.

Croquet coach Coutts courses countrywideNelson might well be home for national youth cro-quet representative Jarrod Coutts, but right now it’s just the halfway point on a 2000 kilometer coaching journey throughout the entire country. From Invercargill to Whangarei, Jarrod’s summer job is helping coach association and golf croquet players throughout New Zealand, building up their skills, identifying talent, as well as helping his own aspirations in becoming a physical education teach-er. Jarrod has spent a day with each club in New Zealand, coaching 180 minutes of croquet. “It’s just for player development and seeing if there are some players that should be in the national squads. It’s pretty cool for me because I got a lot of coaching in the past, so it’s a way for me to put something back into the game as well as earning a bit of coin too,” says the former Nayland College student.A grant has helped finance Jarrod’s trip, although New Zealand Croquet also chip in for his travel costs. The coaching, though, means Jarrod has had to put his own playing career on the back-burner. “I had a couple of average results overseas last year so I’m taking a bit of break from competitive playing, so this is a way to still be involved in the game.”He says the majority of the players are older, al-though he helped mentor a 16 year-old girl from South Canterbury, which was positive, seeing an-other generation pick up the sport. “The oldest I’ve coached is 85. But they enjoy learning new things. They might not get to the top but if they get some-thing out of the session and have a little bit of fun, then I think that’s my job done.”The coaching role is something Jarrod is definitely interested in. “It’s something I enjoy and it’s some-thing I think that people need to take them to the next level.”So far Jarrod has mapped his way through the South Island and has already set sail for the North Island where he is due to finish around the 24th.

country, coaching other croquet players. He was in Nelson last week. Photo:

Former Nelson College fullback and Tasman Mako sevens player James Lowe has been selected for the New Zealand Sevens squad by super-coach Gordon Tietjens. The selection came after the Makos won the bowl trophy, capping off a great weekend for the side at the Pub Charity national sevens tournament in Queenstown. The young side, led by New Zealand sevens player and Nelson sportsman of the year, Shane Christie, won the

bowl after beating Hawkes Bay in the final 31-22.Earlier, Tasman were competitive in a tough pool, drawing with Bay of Plenty, losing narrowly to North Harbour and running short on gas against a strong Canterbury side. The Makos were then sent to the bowl competition where they beat Southland and Northland in the quarter and semi finals respectively before their final win.Auckland went on to win the competition.

In Tasman Bay some excellent snap-per are being taken out in the deep-er water straight out from Nelson. Head out into the middle of the bay in at least 15-17 meters of water, with burley and stray line rigs and fresh baits or pillies and squid. The Boulder Bank is going off! Large numbers of kingfish are now smash-ing lures around, so if you ever wanted to land one of these awe-some fish, get in your boat and get out there. You need to use Rapala X-Rap 30 lures; these are a diving lure. As for rod and reel you want something that can handle a good fight - a jig-ging rod, puka rod or any other rod that has at least 50lb line will do, as well as a reel that can handle a bit

of torture in the drag department. These fish don’t fight as hard as the ones in deeper water but all the same will take you to the cleaners if you don’t take it easy. Troll about 6-7 knots, stay between 7-12 meters. Early morning when the sun first hits the water is a good time to do it or late in the evening. Another option is the mussel farms with some big numbers getting caught on stickbaits, poppers and jigs. French Pass is still very slow with all the fish up around Nelson at the mo-ment. Not much to report on D’urville Island and Stephen's Passage apart from good sized coutta to be taken. Help yourselves to them, they are in

good numbers and easy to hook up. Expensive jigs are normally the best, they are magnets to them. Inner sounds are finally starting to get some fish but has been very slow, and now all the holiday makers are there you will be best to fish later at night or early in the morning un-til everyone goes back home. Again the pillies are the way to go on stray lines and heaps of salmon burley.

Lenny Smith, a member of the Dawnbreaker Fishing Club, with a couple of 15lb snapper caught last week in Tasman Bay.

It’s no fluke that the two best futsal nations hold world domination on the football pitch as well. The five a-side indoor adaptation of football is making its way to Nelson on a more formal basis, and it’s hoped that the sport will not only boost the footballing talents in the region but create a pathway for those wishing to play futsal at a higher level.

The futsal league will be held every Sunday even-ing at Saxton Stadium from February 12. Regis-trations can be made by emailing [email protected] or phoning 027 547 4436 to find out more information.Teams are recommended to feature between five to eight players and the team match fee is $25 per game with a $10 annual fee per player.

It just keeps getting better for sprinter Jonas Kale.Fresh from claiming the prized gold medal in the Boys 14 100m at the North Island Colgate Games in Tauranga over the weekend, the Nay-land College student will be hoping to do it all again in Nelson this week as he sinks his teeth into the South Island Colgate Games.Jonas ran an impressive 11.68 seconds in the final, a huge personal best in a season that also saw him reach the semi final of the junior boys 100m at the New Zealand Secondary School Championship despite having another year left in that division.Jonas was clearly stoked with his win, beating hot favourite John Auga. “Everyone expected him to win so I thought that second would be my best chance,” says Jonas. But he knew that a strong start would be his best bet to win the race and after getting out in front early, Jonas never looked back. Jonas, who is coached by his father and sprint coach Dennis Kale, says the difference for 2012 has been the addition of strength and power trainings. “I think that has helped a lot and I’ve grown a lot more and I’m stronger now.”Jonas also finished third place in the 200m with a personal best of 24.32 seconds. After his win up north, Jonas is confident about his 100m. He says hosting the event will also play into his hands. “I think it will. You’ve got the comfort of being able to go home and have a shower and sleep when everyone else has to hang around at the track or go back to their motel. It would be pretty cool I reckon [to win another gold medal] because it’d rank me around the top three in New Zealand. So I’d be pretty bloody stoked with that really.”The South Island Colgate Games will feature around 800 athletes aged 14 years-old and younger. It will be held from January 13-15 at Saxton Oval.

Nayland College sprinter Jonas Kale will be one of the local favourites heading into this week-end’s South Island Colgate Games in Nelson. Jonas won the Boys 14 100m at the North Island edition of the competition over the weekend. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Christchurch horse Tom and Jerry was the favourite to capture the Nelson Pine Indus-tries Nelson Cup on Sunday and he did so, despite some mousing around on the start-ing line.Tom and Jerry couldn’t stand still, delaying the beginning of the race. But once the race started, driver Dexter Dunn never looked back and finished a remarkable race in first position.Over the two days $394,000 was taken on course from bets with $1.9 million collect-ed off course. Brightwater trainer George Hill went clos-est to posting a win for the Nelson trainers when Living Lord was just caught by a frac-tion on Sunday’s third race. Living Lord pressed into the lead entering the home straight crowd, but was caught in the final stride by a fast-finishing Lively Eastburn. On Friday, local horses Rehab and Jass cap-tured first place finishes, but couldn’t repli-cate similar feats on day two.

Tom and Jerry wins Nelson Cup, breaks course record

Wakatu walked off the field from their first match of the Twenty20 Nel-son Cricket competition at Victory Square on Saturday with a spring in

their step and hopes running high they could pull off a winning double-header on their club day – then along came Stoke/Nayland.

Wakatu had put Wanderers to the sword, with Mason Robinson top scoring with 78 and skipper Shane Laurence (pictured left taking a

catch to dismiss Wanderers batsman Dan Cooper) smashing 34 off just 9 balls. But Stoke/Nayland, also fresh from a win in their first match

against Waimea Toi Toi United, put their batting under enough pres-sure to force a collapse and take maximum points from the first of two

rounds of Twenty20 for the region’s top cricketers.Athletic College Old Boys also won both its games at the Botanic’s, scor-ing a massive 215 in their first match against Motueka. ACOB then went

on to easily beat defending champions WTTU.Shane says the club day at Wakatu was a great occasion and he was

thrilled to see old boys and sponsors come along. “We had a sausage sizzle, life member Jeff Rackley spoke and then all the captains got up

to speak. It was a great day for the club, it’s just a shame we couldn’t celebrate with two wins.”

Brett Nicholls’ crew will be insuring his car is “bulletproof ” heading into the New Zealand Su-perstock Championship in a few week’s time. The 48n driver claimed his second South Island Superstock Championship title in three years last weekend and hopes his performance in a new car was the perfect warm up heading into Huntly at the end of this month.Beating top drivers like Dale Ewers, Craig Boote and Shane Harwood, Brett understands the sig-nificance of his win. He finished first twice and earned a fifth place finish, not bad in a field of 18 cars. “It was good to win at home in front of the home crowd. When you’ve got the likes of the two Boote cars, Shane Harwood, Dale Ewers, Blair Cunningham, they’re all big names. I was over-the-moon to win the South Island Champs again.

I won in 2009, so to back it up, I’m happy as.”He had set four key goals this season and the win in Nelson ticked off the first, in his new car. Next on the list is a visit to Rotorua for the World 240 Championship this weekend where he will face some of the North Island’s top drivers for the first time this season, followed by winning the New Zealand Superstock Championship in Huntly two weeks later, then gaining selection in the Nelson Tigers team’s racing squad for Palmerston North.Brett says he has been rapt with the success of the new car, despite a late start to the season, and he’s confident he has the power and the crew to win his first national title. “I just want to make sure it’s going to be bulletproof, and reliable as, because you need a reliable car to win a New Zea-land title.”Brett would like to thank all of his crew and spon-sors for their hard work in the 2011/12 season.
