THE CONCEPT OF SELF REALIZATION Definition: fulfillment of oneself of the possibilities of ones character of personality Reflection: In short terms, it is the understanding of whom oneself is, due to circumstances over time. Its the act of figuring out who you are on your own, based on decisions or actions you do.

TYPES OF SELF REALIZATION Self realization can have many different meanings Over time changes in emotional/physical views of oneself Many events over time provide evidence of (a) characteristic(s) in oneself Immediate instances of change due to single events When one single specific event changes the person(s) Group change When the same event(s) change a group of people, maybe similarly or differently. Not everyone reacts the same to it, and it can be several events, or just simply one.
  4. 4. ISHMAELS SELF REALIZATION (INDIVIDUAL) One of the few main characters, Ishmael, undergoes self realization throughout the story. Prior to war, condemns racism, after being shot uses racist slur Jap and cusses their race. Severely hurt when Hatsue leaves him. Learns overtime that there are occurrences in life that are uncontrollable, and need to be left alone while you control what you can. Why stress over the uncontrollable when you can spend your time changing what can benefit you?
  5. 5. SAN PIEDROS SELF REALIZATION (GROUP) In the story, the setting is San Piedro, mostly in the courtroom. The citizens as an entire all go through self realization, some more than others. The jurors are a great representation of the entire town, as one smaller party. All except one are confident Kabuo is guilty, only because he is Japanese-American, and they have opinions that degrade races other than white. By the end of the trial, they learn they are wrong, reflect on the trial, and realize that they were wrong and learn that theyre racist views arent necessarily true.
  6. 6. THE HOLOCAUST (GROUP NARRORATED BY ONE) Elie Weisel is the author of several books with the Holocaust as the topic His self realization is indifference There is something that separates everyone in the world, which is indifference We find conflict with each other because of our differences

SELF REALIZATION TODAY Apparent ways: helps teach and instruct people how to learn about themselves more deeply Used now in religions Hinduism - Enlightenment and prayer Buddhism - Awakening Sikhism - Atam-cheene is self analysis Less apparent forms of self realization: Events involving Pressure (peer, anxiety, threats, etc.) Learning (school, by doing and learning from mistakes) Choices (what choices you make in certain situations)

BENEFITS OF SELF REALIZATION Being at peace with yourself The better you know yourself, the easier it is to find what you like, and how you fill your empty spaces It helps get rid of bad thoughts You can be happy in having that feeling of knowing, and not having to contemplate decisions you dont want to make In religions previously noted, you are more faithful and joyful It is deemed a success by religions to be more faithful, because you are absent of worry and stress so you can just be yourself

MATURITY Maturity: the state, fact, or period of being mature Mature: complete in natural growth or development Self realization is a factor to maturity Helps you mature, as you learn more about yourself and what you do in certain situations Not only learning about yourself, but others around you as well
  10. 10. SUMMARY The fulfillment of oneself of the possibilities of ones character of personality Different types of realization Occurs in different circumstances Individuals v. Group One event v. sequence of events Happens nowadays, especially in religions Buddhism, Sikhism, Hinduism Self Realization is beneficial and healthy for the humans mind and body
