BioLite

BioLite’s Origin

Invented by Alexander Drummond and Jonathan Cedar, the BioLite stove technology was inspired by a philosophy of applying efficient design to real world problems.

Alec and Jonathan met at the design consultancy Smart Design in New York City, where they quickly bonded over their interest in sustainable design in 2006. Alec, frustrated that all efficient camping stoves required petroleum fuel or batteries, had the idea of a wood-burning stove able to utilize its own thermal energy. Jonathan, an avid camper, quickly brought his engineering background to the table and the two began the design process. Countless nights, weekends, and prototypes later, the BioLite Camp Stove was born.

BioLite is a revolutionary stove that makes cooking on wood as clean, safe and easy as modern fuels while generating electricity to charge cell phones and LED lights off-grid.

MISSION: BioLite is a developer and manufacturer of advanced energy products that make cooking with wood as clean safe and easy as modern fuels while also providing electricity to charge cell phones and LED lights off-grid. We feel a strong sense of responsibility not just to develop products that work well but also to create businesses that make a positive contribution to the global community.

TECHNOLOGY: Open wood fires are inefficient, wasting potential energy and creating toxic smoke due to incomplete combustion. Carefully designed stoves that use fans to blow air into the fire can dramatically improve combustion. However, such stoves require small amounts of electricity to power their fans and most people who cook on wood are without grid or battery access. BioLite stoves solve this problem by converting a fraction of the fire’s thermal energy into electricity to power our combustion improvement system. Excess electricity is made available to users for charging small electronic devices such as Cell phones and LED lights.

PRODUCT: The BioLite CampStove is designed for outdoor enthusiasts. Our patent-pending thermoelectric-fan technology delivers clean, efficient, lightweight, portable and carbon-neutral outdoor cooking without the need for petroleum fuel or batteries.

EXPERIENCE: The BioLite HomeStove, which leverages BioLite thermoelectric-fan technology to provide clean, carbon-reduced cooking for developing world consumers (3 billion of whom cook on wood and other solid fuels). This improvement on the “rocket stove” design reduces emissions 10 times, and is designed to easily merge with traditional cooking practices in focus regions.

The BioLite team together has over 30 years of product development experience and holds more than 30 utility patents. Previous clients include OXO, Johnson & Johnson, Hewlett Packard, Nike, Lego, Church and Dwight, Pepsi, GE, Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Motorola, and Bosch. More than 90% of our developed products have gone to market.

Rose Park Advisors LLC was founded in 2007 by Harvard Business School's Clayton Christensen, the NY Times bestselling author of The Innovator's Dilemma, and architect of the framework of disruptive innovation. Christensen's co-founders are Matthew Christensen, previously a consultant with Innosight and the Boston Consulting Group, and Whitney Johnson, formerly a double-ranked Institutional Investor equity analyst at Merrill Lynch.

A key finding of founder Clayton Christensen's research is that many of the companies that grow from start-ups to become industry giants are built around innovations that create new markets or reshape existing ones. Just as established companies systematically underestimate how large entrant competitors will become, tools of financial analysis systematically under-estimate their growth potential. Because these entrant companies tend to be misunderstood, the market misjudges their impact, presenting an investment opportunity. From solar chargers in Africa to health clinics in India, Toniic is contributing to a global economy that supports people, planet and profit. Speaking at the Clinton Global Initiative in NY, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves, a public-private partnership led by the United Nations Foundation, to save lives, improve livelihoods, empower women, and combat climate change by creating a thriving global market for clean and efficient household cooking solutions. This initiative sets the goal of reaching 100 million homes with clean cooking technologies by the year 2020 and is being supported by an initial commitment of over $60 million from the US Government.

In particular, we were thrilled that the Secretary chose to highlight BioLite's own "Waste Heat to Electricity" technology as an example of innovation poised to transform cookstoves.

BookBox"Such subtitles could be used worldwide to increase literacy, and cost almost

nothing."

- New York Times

What is BookBox?

BookBox is essentially a web-based jukebox of digital books in languages from around the world. It synchronizes the text, audio, and visual media to create an educational and entertaining reading experience for children and even adults who still have a child in them! Based on proven methods of Same Language Subtitling (SLS), BookBox aims to not only enhance children's basic literacy, but also facilitate their proficiency in foreign languages.Read Testimonials and Press about BookBox here.

BookBox's mission

The mission of BookBox is to create outstanding audio-visual “books” for children below 10 years of age in a variety of languages. The primary goal of BookBox is to not only promote a love for reading through extremely edutaining and culturally inclusive content from around the world, but also to give automatic reading practice to children.

How does BookBox work?

BookBox is based on a methodology called Same Language Subtitling (SLS) where a child can relate the phonetic sounds with the visual subtitles to accelerate reading skill development. When SLS is integrated into a "book", reading happens automatically and subconsciously, as proven through sophisticated eye-tracking research.

Who benefits?

Any child can learn to read from BookBox . Parents in search of resources for reading and language learning that are both effective and affordable, will find tremendous value in BookBox. Especially busy parents can now use BookBox to combine the fun of a cartoon with reading practice and language learning at the same time.

Why BookBox instead of cartoons?

Cartoons are designed for pure fun. Sometimes they are violent and often loaded with ads. BookBox allows a child to have fun with animation while developing his/her reading and language skills. Our animated books are ad-free and violence-free, taking great care to be respectful of peoples from around the world. Bookbox also distinguishes itself by the cultural diversity of its story content. In a world that is increasingly interconnected, at BookBox we believe that it is important to expose the younger generation to the many different languages and cultures.

Where do Bookbox stories come from?

Page 6: 10 Companies Project

BookBox engages local authors to create or adapt stories based on their individual cultures and traditions. An editorial committee selects stories on an on-going basis and anyone can be a BookBox author! We review and select stories anonymously and only those that bring cultural, social, and educational values to its readers.

What are the future plans for BookBox?

BookBox has many exciting new books lined up for the coming year, hailing from various cultures across the globe in over 10 languages. Please email us your feedback on what you would like to see more from us.

BRITANNIAOverview:

The story of one of India's favourite brands reads almost like a fairy tale. Once upon a time, in 1892 to be precise, a biscuit company was started in a nondescript house in Calcutta (now Kolkata) with an initial investment of Rs. 295. The company we all know as Britannia today.

The beginnings might have been humble-the dreams were anything but. By 1910, with the advent of electricity, Britannia mechanised its operations, and in 1921, it became the first company east of the Suez Canal to use imported gas ovens. Britannia's business was flourishing. But, more importantly, Britannia was acquiring a reputation for quality and value. As a result, during the tragic World War II, the Government reposed its trust in Britannia by contracting it to supply large quantities of "service biscuits" to the armed forces.

As time moved on, the biscuit market continued to grow… and Britannia grew along with it. In 1975, the Britannia Biscuit Company took over the distribution of biscuits from Parry's who till now distributed Britannia biscuits in India. In the subsequent public issue of 1978,

Page 13: 10 Companies Project

Indian shareholding crossed 60%, firmly establishing the Indianness of the firm. The following year, Britannia Biscuit Company was re-christened Britannia Industries Limited (BIL). Four years later in 1983, it crossed the Rs. 100 crores revenue mark.

On the operations front, the company was making equally dynamic strides. In 1992, it celebrated its Platinum Jubilee. In 1997, the company unveiled its new corporate identity - "Eat Healthy, Think Better" - and made its first foray into the dairy products market. In 1999, the "Britannia Khao, World Cup Jao" promotion further fortified the affinity consumers had with 'Brand Britannia'.

Britannia strode into the 21st Century as one of India's biggest brands and the pre-eminent food brand of the country. It was equally recognised for its innovative approach to products and marketing: the Lagaan Match was voted India's most successful promotional activity of the year 2001 while the delicious Britannia 50-50 Maska-Chaska became India's most successful product launch. In 2002, Britannia's New Business Division formed a joint venture with Fonterra, the world's second largest Dairy Company, and Britannia New Zealand Foods Pvt. Ltd. was born. In recognition of its vision and accelerating graph, Forbes Global rated Britannia 'One amongst the Top 200 Small Companies of the World', and The Economic Times pegged Britannia India's 2nd Most Trusted Brand.

Today, more than a century after those tentative first

Page 14: 10 Companies Project

steps, Britannia's fairy tale is not only going strong but blazing new standards, and that miniscule initial investment has grown by leaps and bounds to crores of rupees in wealth for Britannia's shareholders. The company's offerings are spread across the spectrum with products ranging from the healthy and economical Tiger biscuits to the more lifestyle-oriented Milkman Cheese. Having succeeded in garnering the trust of almost one-third of India's one billion population and a strong management at the helm means Britannia will continue to dream big on its path of innovation and quality. And millions of consumers will savour the results, happily ever after.

Sounds like yesterday when people commented that healthy foods meant "compromising on the taste." NutriChoice SugarOut is the most novel product range to have been introduced in the market. The product is not just sweet but tastes great, and yet contains no added sugar.

This is because NutriChoice SugarOut is sweetened with "Sucralose," derived from sugar, which provides the same sweetness as any other biscuit, without the added calories of sugar.

This range is available in 3 delicious variants namely Litetime, Chocolate cream, and Orange cream, targeted towards all health sensitive people. It is also relevant for consumers with sugar related ailments.

We are sure that you will be pleasantly delighted with its great taste and equally surprised to know that it has no added sugar.

Don't be taken for a ride when you read "Sugar Free" label on many biscuit packs marketed in India or abroad. Even with 100% no-added sugar, wheat-cereals in biscuits have their own natural sugar content. Britannia has chosen to represent these biscuits with "No Added Sugar" claim, as there is no added sugar in the processing of NutriChoice SugarOut.

BuildDeskWho we areBuildDesk Ltd is a UK company that is part of the wider BuildDesk Group.  BuildDesk provides consultancy and support tools to help improve the use of energy in buildings. We have about 100 people in offices in six European countries and are part of the Rockwool group of companies.   Our work includes:

helping national and local governments to set policies on energy

helping regions and local government to implement sustainable energy plans

helping businesses make cost-effective energy improvement investments in their buildings

producing software for energy efficient design of buildings

undertaking calculations on building energy efficiency research into energy in the built environment

Our people share common values to improve the environment. We also act with honesty, reliability, efficiency, dedication and responsibility.

What we stand forWe believe that people should live and work in buildings that are comfortable but that do not use large amounts of energy to keep them that way.  Good buildings can use a fraction of the energy used by poorly designed and managed ones.We are also keen that when energy is needed, as much of it as possible comes from renewable resources.

Page 22: 10 Companies Project

Fossil fuels are a precious resource and we don’t want to see them wasted through inefficient buildings and processes. We also believe that people are usually the most important factor in saving energy.  Energy conscious behaviour is essential to make the best use of any building, whether it is energy efficient or not.

What we doBuildDesk helps people to plan for, develop, build, live and work in buildings in an energy efficient way.  Our mission is:    Together with our customers BuildDesk creates an energy efficient and sustainable building environment, by uniquely connecting people and optimal know-how  We usually describe our services as oftware, training and consultancy.

Software and TrainingThe BuildDesk software suite helps architects and engineers make their working processes more efficient by doing most of the time-consuming calculation work and making it possible for them to focus on designing and planning. Our software makes it easy to calculate the energy efficiency and predicated carbon emissions of buildings.  BuildDesk Training provides you with the needed theoretical insights as well as hands-on training for

ConsultancyBuildDesk undertakes a wide range of consultancy projects that help to make the built environment more energy and carbon efficient

Policy developmentWe provide support to government and business clients for policies that will help to improve the environmental performance of the built environment. This will reduce their contribution to damaging climate change. We also help our clients to develop policies to adapt to the changes in climate that are likely to occur in future decades.

Implementing change Having a policy is only useful if it is implemented.  We

Page 24: 10 Companies Project

help clients to put their policies into effect, whether they are about major infrastructure planning or improving the building efficiency of a small business.

Selected ProjectsExploring the implications of Passive House Design Client: RetailerUsing one of experts from Austria, we worked with a retailer to investigate how using the Passive House approach would affect their designs. The project involved reviewing main design features and then meeting to discuss aspects of design that would change if Passive House were used. It also noted areas where BREEAM and Passive House might conflict. The work will help to inform future design approaches.

Page 25: 10 Companies Project

Review of UK EPBD implementation Client: Government of AustraliaThe Government of Australia is developing policies to improve the environmental efficiency of buildings and wanted to learn from experiences in the UK. We advised on the progress of the implementation of Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) and Display Energy Certificates (DECs) and gathered information and examples from organisations that had commissioned certificates. The work helped the client to determine the benefits and issues surrounding different policy actions.

Passive Houses Give a High Quality of Life Client: Lower Austrian governmentPassive Houses are designed to be comfortable all year round whilst using less than 15kWh of energy per year and square metre.  For comparison, the energy use of a standard British house built to the most recent building standards is typically in the order of 60kWh per year and square metre.  There were concerns that the high insulation needed to create passive houses as well as the artificial ventilation and heat recovery system would make them uncomfortable.  However, post occupancy studies by BuildDesk on 32 houses have found that people living in the houses find them very comfortable. Perception played an important role in acceptance of the Passive Houses. Some features were thought to be off-putting by prospective occupants but did not register as important once the houses were in use.

Page 26: 10 Companies Project

Driving housing improvements through EPCsClients include: De Alliantie, Amsterdam and Wonen Breburg, TilburgHousing that has been cheaply built is usually the most expensive for the tenants because of high heating costs. BuildDesk has developed an approach that helps housing associations to upgrade and manage their housing stock cost effectively. The approach starts with surveys that determine the condition of the stock. The information from surveys is captured in a database and an Energy Performance Certificate is produced. The measures needed to upgrade each unit to a better EPC rating are determined, along with the costs of the improvements.  Once the housing owners have upgraded to the desired standard, the database is updated to ensure the new details are captured. The system allows cost effective improvements and improved long-term management of the properties. So far, 800.000 dwellings have been assessed using BuildDesk tools.

Refurbishing a school to Passive House standardClient: Linz City GovernmentA Passive House uses less than 15kWh of energy per square metre per year for heating and cooling. This standard is now being applied to a school in Linz, Austria. BuildDesk has helped to define the building and has calculated the physical parameters needed to make it meet the low energy use criteria. BuildDesk will also monitor and testing the building as work progresses. The project is likely to help the Linz City Government to use the Passive House standard for all school refurbishments in Future.

Page 27: 10 Companies Project

Higher costs for those on lower incomesBuildDesk undertook a study of the costs of heating. This showed that the cheapest dwellings were usually the ones with the worst energy performance.  Generally cheaper dwellings were occupied by low income households. The total cost of living in cheap dwellings with low energy performance was shown to be relatively higher than the cost of living in more expensive but more energy efficient dwellings.  Rising energy costs are therefore likely to impact heavily on low income households, even if the rental costs are low. This shows that improving the energy efficiency of dwellings has both environmental and social benefits.BuildDesk is convinced that the improvement of the energy performance of public residential buildings is one of the structural solutions in the battle against poverty and rising energy prices. The European Anti Poverty Network (EAPN Netherlands) has shown high interest in the BuildDesk approach and vision on fuel poverty. Fuel poverty is a relatively new issue and not yet perceived as a policy issue.
