10 Cloverfield Lane

10 Cloverfield lane, while being in essence some sort of blood relative to the controversial 2010 movie Cloverfield is not a sequel or has much reference to the first movie whatsoever, the use of the word in the title is almost a marketing technique for the movie although there was references riddled within the movie as to why the two films are connected and are in the same universe. The movie takes the route of a suspense thriller throughout with the great use of actors such as; John Goodman, Mary Winstead and John Gallagher which all contribute to making an extremely suspenseful movie.

References to Cloverfield The film makes links to its predecessor scarcely however when the

references are made to the film it is very subtle, it seems almost as though they wanted it to be a separate film but were forced to put something in contextually.

References are dated back but can be found if you persevere hard enough to find them then they will make themselves clear, they try to tie the characters mainly into the film as one of the main characters who is played by John Goodman shows ties to an organisation that if read into and shown in the film showed why he was so prepared and why he knew an attack was going to occur.

JJ Abrahams as a postmodern directorOne key thing to mention about the film is the use of JJ Abrahams as a producer and the references to all of this other movies with the use of the “Slusho” drink that can be found in other movies such as Star Trek, the original Cloverfield as well as Alias and Heroes. With this one feature in common throughout JJ’s movies ( mostly) it shows that he is putting his very own postmodern stamp on his movies, this is through the use of the drink Slushos, this is very interesting as only those who care enough to look into it will find out which makes it all the more mysterious. It also makes you question whether these all occur in the same universe or if its just a stamp of achieved and recognition from the producer and director.

Postmodernism in 10 Cloverfield Lane The movie could be seen clearly as a maximalist as after every bump and

turn and feeling is amplified in this movie, the catalyst being the confined space and the feeling of being trapped underground leading to feeling claustrophobic. This is amplified by the extremity of the writing and lines of the characters, the use of ominous and almost delusional sentence patterns of John Goodman as a character making you second guess yourself the entire way through. The character could almost be seen as a homage to the previous psychopathic thrillers that have occurred such as psycho and other large movies, the character feeds off of these classics and makes his character based on that.

The use of hyper reality to create the tension throughout the movie is used because of the lack of common sense for the characters and the insanity of John Goodman as a character this creates this unreal sense of fake happenings

Postmodernism continued There are lots of pastiche references to movies such as toward the end of

the film where there is inevitably a reference to that of space movies such as interstellar and a Alien with the use of the DIY space suit that was made, the camera angles used to show facial expressions and gestures pay homage to there directors when creating the movie and adding a sense of mystery.

The use of flattening for effect from the main character of John Goodman showed and highlighted his insanity after treating this stranger as high dead daughter and trying ot fill the hole, he also kills on a whim when one thing goes wrong with no emotion and no remorse for doing so. Much like the 2001 film: A space odyssey.
