Jain Hi-Tech Agri Institute (JHAI)
I have a dream to change the way Indian farmers do agriculture from the present
state of cropping depending on water availability to state where water should be made
available to suit their choice and need of cropping etc. Says Padmashree Dr. Bhavarlal
Jain, the founder Architect of Jain Irrigation System Ltd . (JISL)
Mr. Jain has realized very early in his life that farmers from more than 70% of the
population are the future of this great country. It is this belief that made him, with
degrees in Commerce and Law, shy away from a lucrative government job to start a
business in an area very closely laced with Agriculture,
The industrial enterprise began with grouping of farmers and teaching them to
grow PAPAYA for the extraction of PAPAIN, an industrial enzyme with scope for export.
Thus started a contract farming practice in 1978, a model that he developed which is a
much discussed one and it proved to be the most successful model in India. Farmers
from Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat participated in this contract farming
venture and supported Mr. Jain. Collateral to this highly successful business activity,
something very transient at that time and later to develop into a major activity by Jains
was also born-Training and Extension in its most practical way.
Jains firmly believe that provision of technologies to high precision high
productive farming begins with farmers learning about the technology.
The progenitor of technologies in Agriculture in this country should take upon
themselves the task of educating the Indian farmer first about the application of the
technology before transferring it to him. This strategy becomes critical when it comes to
micro-irrigation technology; having a bundle of physical components and a spectrum of
sciences-Physical, Material & Biological sciences interplaying in a very intricate
combination. The concept selling strategy adopted by Jains necessitated the
developed of a high-tech training institute.(retrieved from www.jains.com)
Publications :

highlights of various activities of company, current assets, awards glimpses of farmers
extension activities, visitor’s profile and views, staff welfare, social , cultural and sports

History
The Beginning Of The Road To Success
The Roots
Our journey began in 1887 when our forefathers left the deserts of Rajasthan,
their home state, in search of water and food and reached Wakod, at the foothills of the
famous Ajanta Caves. They started farming as a means of livelihood.
In 1963 selling kerosene in pushcart, the young law graduate, Bhavarlal Jain,
founded the family business in trading. The family partnership with a meager Rs. 7,000,
accumulated savings of three generations, as capital. Soon, agencies for two wheelers,
auto vehicles and automobile accessories were established in quick succession. (Jain
Irrigation System Annual Report 1999)
Story of Success
Trading : Inspired by a quote, "Agriculture : a profession with future" young Jain
added dealership of tractors, sprinkler systems, PVC pipes and other farm equipment.
In order to broad base the agri-business, agencies for farm inputs such as Fertilizers,
Seeds, Pesticides were also added. Sales grew from Rs. 1 million in 1963 to Rs. 110
millions in 1978, a phenomenal increase of 110 times. These formative years helped us
build a unique and lasting enterprise. This was achieved through consistent high
standards of performance and personal behavior on the one hand and a strong sense of
commitment for meeting targeted volumes and for payment of debts in time, on the
other. Dealings with national and international principals was a contributing factor
towards building these attitudes. In time, we came to be recognized as a reputable,
trustworthy and prestigious house. This background augured well for an entry into
industrial ventures.
Refined Papain : We took over a 14 year-old sick Banana Powder Plant in April 1978
at a high auction price of Rs. 3 million while we only had Rs. 0.2 million as inevitable
surplus. The plant was quickly modified for the production of Papain from Papaya latex.
In December 1978, the founder traveled to New York in search of customers for Jain
Papain. The competition for purchase of raw materials at home and for sale of Papain
abroad was stiff and stifling. However, we developed purified Papain through ceaseless
in-house R&D and emerged as the `Number One’ supplier of the highest purity refined
Papain. Thus Papain put us on the international map.
PVC Pipes : In 1980, manufacturing of PVC Pipes commenced with a small annual
capacity of 300 MTs which was increased to over 35,600 MTs per annum by 1997,
making us the largest single producer of PVC Pipes in the country. A close-knit dealer
distribution network in the rural areas coupled with continuous automation and up
gradation of product facilities and in-house R&D for maximum capacity utilization has
kept us at the forefront. This further helped us to expand the range to Casing & Screen
Piping Systems thereby continuing to contribute to the growing export volumes.
Micro - Irrigation Systems : Beginning in 1989, we toiled and struggled to pioneer
Water-management through Micro Irrigation in India. We have successfully introduced
some hi-tech. concepts to Indian agriculture such as `Integrated System Approach’,
One-Stop-Shop for Farmer, `Infrastructure Status to Micro Irrigation & Farm as
Industry.’ We have come a long way.
Food Processing : In 1994 we set-up world class food processing facilities for
dehydration of onion, vegetable and production of fruit purees, concentrates and pulp.
These plants are ISO 9001 & HACCP certified and Meet International FDA statute
requirements. Combining the modern technologies of the west with the vast, mostly
untapped agriculture resources of India, using the local human resources and
inculcating the culture of excellence in quality and total customer service. We have set
ourselves a goal to become a major and reliable global supplier of food ingredients of
finest quality.(retrieved from www.jains.com)
Today with over 7000 committed employees strength worldwide, we have established
our Leadership in diverse products like Micro & Sprinkler Irrigation, Agricultural Inputs,
Agro-Processed Products, Plastic Pipes & Sheets.

Model Design
Drip irrigation system delivers water to the crop using a network of mainlines,
sub-mains and lateral lines with emission points spaced along their lengths. Each
dripper/emitter, orifice supplies a measured, precisely controlled uniform application of
water, nutrients, and other required growth substances directly into the root zone of the
plant.
Water and nutrients enter the soil from the emitters, moving into the root zone of the
plants through the combined forces of gravity and capillary. In this way, the plant’s
withdrawal of moisture and nutrients are replenished almost immediately, ensuring that
the plant never suffers from water stress, thus enhancing quality, its ability to achieve
optimum growth and high yield.
Range of Drip Irrigation Systems

Green Houses
Green houses are climate controlled. Jain Green Houses have a variety of applications,
the majority being, off-season growing of vegetables, floriculture, planting material
acclimatization, fruit crop growing for export market and plant breeding and varietals
improvement.
Jain Green Houses are built of a G.I. structure wherein crops are grown under a
favorable artificially controlled environment and other conditions viz. temperature,
humidity, light intensity, photo period, ventilation, soil media, disease control, irrigation,
Fertigation and other agronomical practices throughout the season irrespective of the
natural conditions outside.
In conventional Agronomical practices, the crops are being grown / cultivated in the
open field under natural conditions where the crops are more susceptible to sudden
changes in climate i.e. temperature, humidity, light intensity, photo period and other
conditions due to which the quality, yield of a particular crop can get affected and may
be decreased.
Jain Green Houses are available in different sizes and constructed as per customer
requirement. The sizes vary from as small as 100 Sq. M to 10,000 Sq M and more.
The degree of sophistication also varies from a simple polyhouse with polythein sheet
covering to highly sophisticated, fully automated systems with Poly carbonate sheet
roofing (double walled), PAR lightings, boom irrigation, rolling benches and full scale
computerized (fully automated) systems. (Retrieved from www.jains.com)

solution to come over this problem and to
maximize returns. Computer provides a
faster and precise operation in the Green
House. Also it stores, displays and prints
the Green House information as needed.
Computer can do the following operations
as per the pre-scheduled programme:
• Easy to operate, maintain & control. 1. Starting and closing of Micro
Irrigation System.
2. Application of Liquid Fertilizer or
Water Soluble Fertilizer (N:P:K) and
other Nutrients to the plant.

Nursery Plants
Nursery Raising & Agro Forestry
We help farmers develop High Tech Agriculture Farms by imparting, training,
providing technical services and at the same time assuring buy-back of specific crops
at agreed prices.
To demonstrate modern Irri-tech and hi-tech agriculture, a model farm has been
developed, where Planting of horticultural crops, mainly Mango, Guava and Custard
Apple, has been undertaken on a large scale. Over 100,000 trees have been planted
under different soil conditions. Vegetables, including Onion and Capsicum are also
cultivated as intercrops between these horticultural plants. A scientific nursery for
grafting horticultural plants has been established. Agro forestry species, such as
Amla, Teak & Bamboo have also been planted. All these crops are being grown using
hi-tech agricultural inputs including Drip, Fertigation, Tissue Culture, Green Houses
etc.
The company has pioneered tissue culture of ‘Grand Nain’ variety of banana since
1994-95. The Jain Tissue Culture laboratory has successfully micro-propagated and
sold over 2 million ‘Grand Nain’ banana plants with outstanding success. It is the
largest Banana Tissue Culture laboratory in the country. The farmers have increased
their productivity from an average of 12 kg to over 26 kg per bunch per year and have
taken consecutively crops with two ratoons in about 30 months.
