Upscaling Well engineering Strategies
Dual porosity – Dual permeability
Fluids exist in two interconnected systems
Reality
Simulator approximation
Dual porosity – Dual permeability
Create fracture network model using the Create discrete fracture network process
Scale up fracture network properties: porosity, permeability (3 or 6 tensors), sigma
Dual porosity – Dual permeability
Add fracture system to simulation:
2. Drop in fracture properties and the dual porosity matrix-fracture coupling transmissibility
1. Select simulation type
3. Add relative permeability curves for the Fracture system
4. Set Advanced dual porosity settings (no DP multiplier and Gravity drainage)

Well region property
You can use the Geometrical modeling tool to make a region around a well.
Sector modelingCapture the boundary conditions for a region
Sector modelingInsert a sector model
Once the full field model has run, the boundary condition for the region is stored on the Models pane.
Right click the full field case in the Cases pane and select Insert sector model.
Sector modelingRun a sector model
Open the sector model in the Define simulation case model, and drop in the boundary condition captured during the full field run.
Hysteresis
Hysteresis: When the curve used to determine the rock properties is a function of the history of the rock and a function of the direction of the change in the saturation.
Hysteresis
Select drainage relative permeability curves and imbibition relative permeability curves in the Functions tab
Drop in saturation functions from the Input pane
Import a case - Select file
Right click in the Cases paneand select Import (on tree)…
1. Set ‘Files of type’ to beECLIPSE/FrontSim data and results.
2. Select .DATA, or .EGRID etc. and Petrel will locate the other files if available
Import a case - Selection of files
Petrel will locate all necessary files,
if available. You can also makeyour own selection
The Simulator is auto selected based on the data file.
Make sure it is correct because it cannot be changed after import.
Import a case - Units issues
The units can not be changed after import
You will receive a warningif the project you import does
not match the Unit system of your current project.
Click on Change if your current project is empty.
Import a case – Petrel objects
Well data from
RESTART files in the Input pane
3D Grid and properties in the Models pane
Summary data in the Results pane
Simulation case added to the Cases pane
Import a case - Convert to Petrel case
You can convert the imported case to a Petrel case. Right click the case and select Convert to Petrel Case
Most items are converted including:• Fluid model• Rock physics functions• 3D grid properties
The development strategies are NOT converted
Case managementRemote job submission
It is possible to submit jobs from Petrel to a Linux/Unix
computer
To do so you must• Install support for remote simulation• Configure Petrel for remote job submission• Define queues in Petrel
