It is hard to believe that another year has passed. Next month will mark my six-year anniversary
at JPC. I was recently at the funeral home for a gathering and one of the directors introduced me as the new pastor at JPC. A little while later we were alone, and I told him that it had been six
years already but that if that was new I would tell my wife that she was still driving a new car!
I am so thankful for another great Advent season here at JPC. I want to take a moment to thank
all of you for your generous support through the love offering. Even though we missed a Sunday it was still super successful. It made a big difference in my family and my staff was overjoyed too.
The love and support of this church amazes me. I am also thankful for all the sweets, cards, and
personal gifts I found on my desk this Christmas. It seemed like whenever I was having a rough day something would just magically appear. Thanks, from the bottom of my heart for your love
for me and my family. Six years have flown by and I honestly think that we are just now starting
to get moving in the direction that God has for us.
The beginning of a new year is always a mixed bag for me. There is anticipation for things to come but it is always mixed with uncertainty and doubt. I am often hard on myself as I look at
the list of things that didn’t get accomplished the year before! There is a rotten corner at the
highest point of our house that needed repaired the day we moved in. I have a stack of pallets and barn doors sitting in a corner just waiting to become my next furniture project. The list goes
on and on when I think of all the things I should have accomplished, done differently, or said and
not said!
2019 is going to be a big year at JPC for so many reasons! First throughout the year we will be celebrating our fiftieth anniversary. There is already a team hard at work on all of this. You
might even find a note in this newsletter from them? They are working on events, a church di-
rectory, hosting a presbytery meeting, and so much more. I want to challenge you to deepen
your level of commitment this year at JPC. Get involved. Some of these fiftieth anniversary folks
may ask you to participate or attend and I hope that you will!
Our relationship with Family Services of the Piedmont will continue to grow and develop. We
are having a meeting with them later this month to assess how last year went and to make plans for the coming year. I don’t need a meeting to tell you how powerful the Angels and Elves col-
laboration was to our angel tree program. People of real need came here and spent time with us.
Their families benefited but I know ours did too. I am excited to see what that will look like in
the coming year.
Finally, God will guide us through the process of calling a new associate pastor. The nominating
committee has already met and is in the midst of identifying those people that will serve on our
Associate Pastor Nominating Committee. On January 27th we will have a congregational meeting to elect that APNC and they will be off and running! This is going to seem like a slow process,
but I promise you that work is happening. It is much better now than it once was. Imagine if we
had to wait for paper resumes and information instead of zipping forms electronically in seconds?
I remember making cassette tapes of sermons to send to interested churches not that long ago! Be patient. The APNC will work hard and do their best to listen for the direction of God. Some
of their work will be confidential. While they will keep us informed, they may not always be able
to give us (including me) all the details we might want. Please respect that and pray for their
work.
I am excited about what the future holds for us at JPC. I am excited that God is continuing to
use us to advance the kingdom. I am excited that 2019 will be a year that will push us as we cele-
brate, grow, and serve the Lord. Let’s make the fiftieth year at JPC her best! This time next year
I expect us to look back in awe at what God has done. Instead of rotten wood and piles of junk,
instead of unmet goals and lost dreams, instead of saying “We are too busy,” let us say “Thank
you God for using ME, for using this church to impact our community and the world for Jesus!”

50th ANNIVERSARY NEWS …
Here’s Your Chance!
LOTS OF REALLY MEMORABLE EVENTS have happened here at JPC over 50 years,
and we’re hoping you have a story you’d like to share. Please send us your special JPC
memories – the occasions that touched your heart, incidents that amused or delighted you,
happenings that have inspired you, special or unique ways you have been able to serve God through
your JPC experiences.
DON’T MIND SHARING, but hate to write? We can help you with that …
Just jot your event memory down and send it to our History Committee. A few sentences or maybe
a couple of paragraphs will serve to get things started; no need for you to have to draft “the next
great American novel. “ Simply be willing to talk with one of our committee writers or editors. The
committee members will gladly help with the writing part.
Send your anecdote to Vashti Forrest at [email protected], and include your name, e-mail
BREAKFAST WITH SANTA What a wonderful event we had with Breakfast with Santa. We had over 60 children, parents and grandparents enjoy a pancake breakfast, story time with Pastor Jay and a visit with Santa and his wonderful helper. Thanks to the Men of the Church for flip-ping pancakes and Debra Catto for our beautiful decora-tions. And an extra big thank you to Bill and Clarajo for making so many children happy!

Samaritan's Purse Shoebox Update
This week I received an email from Samaritan's Purse telling me that my shoebox was
sent to Peru this year. It's exciting to know that somewhere in Peru is a child enjoying the box
that I packed for her. In the past few years my boxes have gone to Ecuador, Togo, Burundi, Co-
lombia, Kenya, the Baltics, and the Balkans. To think that I have touched children in all those
different countries is an awesome feeling.
This year our church sent 90 boxes to Samaritan's Purse. That's 90 children that were able to
feel God's love through us. Thank you, JPC, for continuing to support this loving outreach year
after year. I know God is smiling.

A big thank you to all the boys and girls who participated in the Christmas play on December 16th! We may have been delayed by the

LADIES THURSDAY NIGHT BIBLE STUDY Please join us on Thursday, January 10, 2019 at 6:30 p.m. in Room 222 at JPC for John Ortberg's study: “All the Places To Go.”
Our lives are filled with divine appointments, unlimited opportunities to join God in an amazing adventure. We just need to have faith enough to walk through the doors God has opened for us. In John Ortberg's six-session small group video study, he helps participants recognize these doors and have faith enough to walk through them.
