RT-flex Control Elements Engine Identification
Rules for Identification of Engine Versions
• The need to identify and allocate design drawings and documentation to the right
engines, requires a rule on how to identify engine versions clearly
• Such a rule for the identification of engine versions must be valid for all Wärtsilä
Sulzer engine types
• In order to ensure this, specific rules are applied
![Page 7: 10-1_Engine Numbering & Identification](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022081806/5536eb305503463f7c8b4b16/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)

RT-flex Control Elements Engine Identification
Identification of 2-stroke Engines
RT… Basic type designation
RTA type designation for RT engines with a camshaft
RT-flex type design for RT engine with “Sulzer Common Rail”
Examples
7 RTA 84 T - B
6 RT-flex 58 T - B
Number of
cylinders
Type designation
Bore size in centimeters
Main application (see next page)

RT-flex Control Elements Engine Identification
Main Application7 RTA 84 T - B
• C stands for Container ship or general fast ships
• U stands for Universal or general marine applications
• T stands for Tanker, Bulker or general slow ships
• F stands for Fixed installations like diesel power plants
NOTE: F is not standing for RT-flex so RTF is not an official engine identification
Proper writing 7RTA84T-B
6RT-flex58T-B
12RTA96C
There is no space between the numbers and letters

Modification Letter7 RTA 84 T - B
This letter must be decided in accordance with some requirements
All letters of the alphabet may be used from B onwards except C, F, T and U

RT-flex Control Elements Engine Identification
Modification Letter is required if…
• The previous engine is offered and built in parallel to the new engine version
Example: RTA-2 and RTA-2U or RTA-2U and RTA-2U-B
• Engine is changed in its power and /or speed to scuh an extent that new data sheets and calculation programs (WinGTD) have to be issued
• Engine is changed in its characteristic such that a different propeller layout is required
• Engine is change externally in such a way that new installation drawings have to be made, i.e. modified engine can not be installed in the place of the previous engine without alteration to the engine room
• Engine is change internally in such a way that it is basically a new engine, i.e. engine description, manuals, drawings etc must be considerably modified

RT-flex Control Elements Assessment
1. How many main bearings does a 9 cylinder engine have.
2. Why is it forbidden to take out two adjacent lower main bearingsshells at the same time?
3. Make a principle sketch of a twin engine installation with a right- and left-hand engine.
4. What is the number next to the “RTA” indicating?
5. RTA84T-B, for what stands the letter “T”?
