The Otsego Main Street will be hosting a “Main Street Building Basics” presentation

October 23, 2013 at 6:00pm Otsego Main Street Office • 128 E. Allegan Street

The public, especially downtown property owners and individuals interested in historic preservation, are invitedto attend. The presentation will be conducted by Kelly Larson, Design Specialist for the State Historic Preservation Office.The presentation will focus on the history of downtowns and the evolution of older buildings over time. Alsodiscussed will be good historic preservation principles and practices to maintain the unique qualities of historicbuildings while also making them functional for today’s needs.The presentation is a kick-off point for the Otsego Main Street Design Committee to select up to three downtownbuildings over the next year to receive no-cost design services intended to facilitate the rehabilitation of abuilding’s façade. Any building located within the downtown is eligible to receive the services that include aschematic drawing of the proposed façade improvement and paint samples. The design services are providedby the State Historic Preservation office and Michigan Main Street Center at the Michigan State HousingDevelopment Authority.Any property owner interested in receiving the services must first attend a “Main Street Building Basics”presentation. Recently, while traveling to a Cross Countrymeet in Dowagiac, we stopped at a road sideplace for a sandwich. While there, we fell into aconversation with two gentlemen from Hartford,MI.I told them my home town was nearby

Watervliet – a thriving city in the l950s. Theyhappened to be United Methodists. We talkedabout people we knew in common (mostlyministers). I threw a ringer into the conversationby commenting “Do you remember seeing an icecream truck frequently driving into yourneighborhood? The name of the business wasDan’s Ice Cream.” One of the gentlemen said “Iremember it well. I was about five years old at thetime and I remember the truck being a new l964GMC with an attached freezer and three bells onthe top of the cab.”I said, “That was me!” Yes, I owned my own ice

cream business. That was fifty years ago. Forfour summers I would drive through Watervliet,Coloma, Hartford and the surrounding arearinging the bells and selling ice cream to childrenof all ages - every day except Sunday. Ice milkbars were l0 cents each or one could buy a realice cream bar for l5 cents! I had saved enoughmoney from delivering newspapers to buy thebusiness and that business paid for a good portionof my college education.My new friend was so captivated with the ice

cream truck memory that I told him I would sendhim a picture of it. Childhood memories can bevery sweet (no pun intended!).Prayer: Dear Lord, help us to appreciate how

Jack went to bewith his Lord onOctober 10,2013 in Alamo.Mr. Nichols wasborn December 10, 1931,in Otsego to Robert andBertha (Finger) Nichols.

Jack served his country in the U.S. Navy.For over 35 years he worked for MenashaCorp. until his retirement. He also servedon the Otsego Fire Dept. for 32 years. OnFebruary 17, 1956 he married BettyTrutsch, who survives. Also surviving arehis children, Ralph of Allegan, Esta of Ot-sego, John (Heather) of Otsego and Rose(Mike) Peters of Pullman; 5 grandchildren;4 great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary (Bill)Kracher of Kalamazoo; many nieces andnephews. He was preceded in death byhis parents; 7 sisters and 5 brothers. Fu-neral services were held Monday, Octo-ber 14, 2013 at

Winkel Funeral Home, OtsegoCelebrant Bill Rose officiated. Cremationtook place. A burial of ashes and MilitaryHonors at Fort Custer National Cemetery,Augusta, will be held at a later date. Spencer “Skip” SHERWOODAGE 74 – OTSEGO, MI

Skip passed away Wednesday, October16, 2013, in Plainwell. Skip was born June29, 1939 in Otsego, the son of Spencerand Millicent (Smith) Sherwood. Heworked for Parker Brass for 40 years be-fore his retirement in 2002. On December3, 1960 he married Romaine Ellis in Ot-sego. Skip was a member of the OtsegoFire Department. He enjoyed hunting, fish-ing, and cutting wood (often sharing withmany of his neighbors and friends). Morethan anything Skip loved spending timewith his children and grandchildren. Sur-viving are his 3 daughters, Lenette Sher-wood (Carol Batker) of Raleigh, NC, AnitaSherwood and Edith (Bret) Rietkerk both ofOtsego; grandchildren, Matthew (Tara)Boerman, Katie Rietkerk, Mariah Rininger,and Ain Rietkerk; great-granddaughtersKeira and Quinn Boerman. He was pre-ceded in death by his wife; parents; an in-fant son; and son, Shawn ThomasSherwood. Friends may meet with his fam-ily on Saturday, October 19, 2013 from1:00 P.M. until time of the service at 2:00P.M. at the

Robert “Bob” MEALEYAGE 69 – OTSEGO, MI

Bob was born toBeulah andClyde Mealey onAugust 13, 1944.He was calledhome by ourLord on October 11, 2013at the V.A. Hospital in Bat-

tle Creek. He served proudly for the Armyin the Vietnam War. He worked as a ma-chinist and mechanic most of his life. Inhis retirement years, he loved working onlawn mowers and anything else with asmall engine. This made him many friendsand loyal customers. Everyone who knewhim, loved him. His surviving family in-cludes children Adam Stacey, Robert L.Mealey II and Garnet Melville. Through hischildren, he leaves behind many grand-children and great grandchildren. Alsosurviving him are brothers Dale (Jean)Mealey of Parkersburg, West Virginia,Thomas Mealey and Russell Mealey bothof Delaware, sisters Shirley (Richard) Blairof Alto and Mary Ann McMahon of Plain-well. Many nieces and nephews will alsobe missing him. Preceding him in deathwere brother Bill Mealey and sister Pearl(Norman) Guerin. A committal service andburial of his ashes will be held on October22 at 12:00pm at the V.A. National Ceme-tery in Battle Creek.

James Severe “Jim” FORCIERAGE 81 - OTSEGO, MI

Jim passed awayTuesday, Octo-ber 15, 2013 inBattle Creek. Mr.Forcier was bornDecember 8, 1931 in St.Paul, MN to Benjamin andBlanche (Jones) Forcier.He graduated from Wilson

High School, St. Paul, and earned hisBachelor Degree from the University ofMinnesota. During the Korean War heserved his country for two years in theU.S. Navy and then three years in theMarines, and was awarded the BronzeStar and two Purple Hearts. He was em-ployed with Minnesota Milk for severalyears. In 1965 he moved to Waconia, MNand worked for Oak Grove Dairy through1969. In 1970 he moved to Otsego wherehe was employed in sales for M.D.E.Corp., retiring in 1996. Jim loved to golf,bowl, take trips in his motor home andspend the winters in Clearwater, FL. Hewas a world traveler and a member of theOtsego Elks Lodge #1711, V.F.W. Post#3030, Michigan Dairy Association,D.A.V., and American Legion. On May 24,1952 in St. Paul he married the formerCarol Sorlie, who survives. Also survivingare his children, Jim Forcier of Minneapo-lis, Kathy (Kurt) Hatfield of Allegan, Tom(Jackie) Forcier and Jeff Forcier, both ofOtsego and Mike Forcier; 12 grandchil-dren; 12 great-grandchildren; a brother,Gene Forcier of Pittsburgh, PA; two sis-ters, Virginia Scatterelli of Minneapolisand Marcie Bungurt of Bloomington, MN;several nieces and nephews. He was pre-ceded in death by his parents and twobrothers, Ben and Dick Forcier. A Mass ofChristian Burial will be celebrated at11:00 A.M. Friday, October 18, 2013 atSt. Margaret Catholic Church, Otsego,Rev. Fr. Brian Stanley celebrant. Burialwith Military Honors by V.F.W. Post #3030and the Fort Custer Honor Guard will beat Fort Custer National Cemetery, Au-gusta, at 1:00 P.M. Friday. In lieu of flow-ers contributions in memory of Jim maybe made to the Alzheimer’s Association,Elks Major Project or the Veterans Hospi-tal of Battle Creek.

Lawrence “Larry” A. Fle-gal, of Plainwell passedaway at home as a resultof a massive stroke onSunday, October 13,2013 at the age of 91. Hewas born on January 11,

1922 in Kalamazoo. Larry was the son ofGeorge and Mary (MacDonald) Flegal.Larry graduated from Kalamazoo CentralHigh School in 1940. He married MaryPatnoude on September 13, 1941 inKalamazoo. He served in the UnitedStates Navy during World War II. When hereturned from the military he was a lettercarrier in Parchment for 31 years. Larrysang lead for over 16 years with the MallCity Harmonizers Barbershop Chorus.“How about a song, Larry?” He lived inhis home for 60 years. Every year for 44years Larry and Mary traveled in theircamper throughout the US and Canada.Larry is survived by his wife of 72 years,Mary; four daughters: Judy (Jerry) Shu-maker, of Plainwell; Jill (Nick Johnson)Flegal, of Colorado; Anne (Dennis) Kirby,of Cooper Twp; Joni (Curt) Haggard, ofVirginia; special dog: Summer; six grand-children: Mike Shumaker; Mark Shu-maker; Larry and Kim Morrell; Molly andRyan Wieber; Randy and Heather Hag-gard; Bobby and Lindsay Haggard; andsix great grandchildren. He is also sur-vived by three sisters: Mary Lee Griffth, ofKalamazoo; Donna Wright, of Kalamazoo;Jane Wells, of Ohio; one brother: RichardFlegal, of Florida; sister-in-law: JuneDaugherty, of Brooklyn; and numerousnieces and nephews. Stephen REXAGE 54 – OTSEGO, MI

Stephen passed away Wednesday, Octo-ber 16, 2013 in Kalamazoo. Steve wasborn September 18, 1959 in Kalamazoo,the son of Howard and Thelma (Sheflea)Rex. Steve was a graduate of Otsego HighSchool. He was an avid NHRA dragsterrace fan, attending many events at theMartin drag strip. Steve also enjoyed fish-ing and had participated in many basstournaments, and spent winters in Florida.Survivors include his father; sisters, Jackie(Dave) Dutton of Otsego and SusanPaolella of Winter Haven, Florida; severalnieces and nephews. He was preceded indeath by his mother; sister, Sally Girling(Rex), and brother-in-law, Charles Paolella.Cremation has taken place and a privatefamily service will take place at a laterdate.
