I t’s pledge time again. For church-goers, that brings to mind the act of filling out a small form indicating an amount you intend to give to your church as an offering to the general fund during the next year so that the Finan-cial Secretary can estimate the income for the annual budget. The prelude, to the Sunday when we all bring our pledges forward and place them on the altar, usually includes gratitude to you and motiva-tion to increase your giving so that we can increase our ministry.

The dictionary definition also includes “lifting a glass to toast to good health.”

I lift my glass to TLC, to her good health.

May we continue to fill our heart and lungs with the love and breath of the Holy Spirit.

May we expand our minds so that we grow in understanding of all the others out there.

May we sharpen our vision to see how Christ is at work in us and through us.

May we develop the muscles of our hands and hearts so that we serve more effectively and con-spicuously in mission in the world.

May our worship and fellowship times together be nourishing inter-missions for the body of TLC so that each member is assured of their belonging and their worth.

May our souls be ever-expanding sacred space, so that all we are can encounter divine love.

May you, wonderful child of God, continue to be blessed here at TLC.

I leave you with this imagining: Imagine Jesus putting each and every one of us into his envelope as his pledge!

TLC Worship Highlights for October 2010TLC Worship Highlights for October 2010TLC Worship Highlights for October 2010TLC Worship Highlights for October 2010 10/3 19th Sunday after Pentecost

Join animal lovers from TLC, Bethlehem, and Faith for our annual Blessing of the Animals.

10/10 20th Sunday After Pentecost and Special Celebration Sunday

Today, we commemorate the 100th anniversary of the idea of establishing a Lutheran seminary in the western United States. This mustard seed grew into Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary! To celebrate, we welcome to our pulpit Ben Colahan, 4th year PLTS Seminarian.

10/17 21st Sunday After Pentecost – Guest Pastor Mary Sanders

Pastor Jean is away this week, so we welcome guest pastor, Rev. Mary Sanders, who will preach and preside.

10/24 22nd Sunday After Pentecost

Jean Flak will be giving our monthly Gift of G.A.B. as a way to kick off our 2011 Pledge program. The practice of Pledging helps you in your discipline of gratefully offering back what has first been given to you, and the total of pledges help our Finance Committee in their ministry of determining and presenting a working budget for the coming year. You will vote on the 2011 Budget at the Congregational meet-ing on November 14.

10/31 Reformation Day

Today we celebrate the Affirmation of Faith of Casey Becker and Natalie Koppen, two beautiful daughters of TLC.

Have you Have you Have you Have you Heard?Heard?Heard?Heard? We have some word of goings-on from sister

parishes in the conference: Grace, Ukiah is celebrating its 50th Jubilee Anniversary this month, and Elim, in Petaluma, is holding a Crafter’s Bazaar on October 16. The raffle prize this year is a one-week stay at a condo in Kona, Hawaii, and includes $650.00 to be used towards condo fees and travel expenses! If you want to purchase tickets ($5 for one; $20 for five) contact the church at [email protected].

Pastor Jean is hosting the Santa Rosa Interfaith Ministerial Association this month at TLC, and she is planning on joining them on November 14 in Old Railroad Square, when community spiritual leaders will join hands in prayer for the community.

The 2nd Annual District A Fall Conference is the 23rd of this month and will be held at Our Savior’s, Lafayette. There is a group of folks from TLC who are planning on attending. We will get to ride in Karen Lehman’s new car!

Sharon Boschen is downsizing and moving and making room for a new grandchild and, most exciting of all, leading our October adult forum! What a beautiful multi-tasker among us.

We have received some thank you letters from the organizations that we send some money to as a result of our Bible’s Got Talent final results voting! It is our duty to give thanks, but it’s nice to receive some too.

Speaking of thanks, next time you see him, give a word of thanks to Bill Reed. He is a quiet servant around TLC on Tuesday mornings. Recently, he even removed the heavy metal door to our utility room, lugged it over to his place so that he could treat it for rust, lugged it back and rehung it, and he has given a lot of time to keeping our weeds under control. Also, give a word of thanks to Lisa and Greg Bartlett for deadheading all of the agapanthus in the parking lot. And how about a hug of appreciation to Mary Dawson who is the creator of the words on the wall – most recently the wonderful headlines for the Bible’s Got Talent Sundays.

To my church families and friends

Thank you for your prayers, gifts, food, and being there for me.

For the Dieckmann families and friends—for all those that loved and cared about Matt Dieckmann.

For all the came to take part in the services for Matt and make a really special day. Even the day was so very nice.

Many thanks from the Hiebel families and Dieckmann families.

~ Betty Hiebel

F or the first time in several months there was no monthly deficit for August. In fact we finished the month $1,479.66 ahead. However we are not out of the financial woods yet. Our deficit for 2010 is $12,679.65, an average of $1,584.96 a month. This $12,679.65 came from the Margaret

Heckathorn bequest. That money is nearly gone. Income must be increased. Expenses are not the problem, we are operating with a bare bones budget. In November the congregation will adopt the 2011 budget. Please be sure to attend the congregational meeting in November for discussion on this important subject. As we begin our Stewardship pledge drive and as you write your contribution check of put that money in your envelope please keep our financial situation in your mind, hearts and prayers.

Too often, people work hard to build their assets, then fail to protect them. Without proper protec-tion, the money you’re working so hard to save—could be lost if you die or suffer an illness or injury. Are you protected?

Life insurance: One in four Americans dies before he or she retires.1 Premature death can under-mine a family’s financial health, now and in the future. Having adequate life insurance can ensure your family continues to live at home, your children go to college and your spouse retires as planned, even if something unexpected happens to you.

Disability income insurance: Illness and injuries are more common than you might think. Today, a 25-year-old has a one in four chance of experiencing a long-term loss of income from a disability before he or she turns 65.1 A disability disrupts a person’s ability to work, impact your earnings and ability to cover daily living expenses. Disability income insurance can help. If you’re unable to work due to a qualifying illness or injury, this vital coverage helps pay eligible expenses.

Long-term care insurance: one of every two women and one of every three men age 65 and older will spend some time in a nursing home.2 Long-term care insurance can protect your savings, as well as your freedom to choose the care you receive.

For help protecting your financial strategy and your family, contact Mark Koppen, Financial Associ-ate, at 694-6833 or [email protected] or visit thrivent.com.

Sherry Glaser will perform Oh My Goddess!, a one-woman comedy of biblical proportions, on Friday, October 15th and Saturday, October 16th at 8:00 PM at the Glaser Center. A comedy with heart and soul, Oh My Goddess! reminds us of why we are here, the truth of our origins and connection to all life.

In Oh My Goddess! Sherry Glaser plays two characters. The first, Miguel De Cervantes, is a com-mon man, a waiter for the past 25 years. He tells his story of being chosen to channel the return of the Great Jewish Mother of us all. God’s “better half” is just waking up from a five-thousand year nap. She tells her side of the creation story. As the Goddess, reclaiming her status as Co-creator of all things, Sherry Glaser imbues simple facts of life with pro-found hilarity and enlightening humor. (How can you have a father without a mother? You know better.) Ma is not handing down commandments but she does have a to-do list that touches and delights audiences.

The Glaser Center is located at 547 Mendocino Avenue in Santa Rosa. Proceeds from the show will benefit CERES.
