Adventures in Caring 2018-2019 Annual Report Thelast18monthshasbeenatimeofre-inventingAdventuresinCaring(AiC),inordertomakethemissionsustainableandourservicesaccessible.Wehadtoinventanentirelynewwayofoperating,fromthegroundup.Thisisembodiedintwonewinitiativesthatwilltakeusintothefuture. 1. Student-Led Intergenerational Initiative
Firstisthemuch-lovedRaggedyprogram.AfterthefiresandmudslidesofDecember2017&January2018,mostlocalcharitabledollarsbegan,understandably,togointoemergencyservices.AiCsufferedhugelossesoffunding.Asaresult,byDecemberof2018wecouldnolongeraffordtohireourfull-timeDirectorofVolunteers,ShelleyRickard,whohasbeenwithusforfifteenyears.ItwasasaddayforallofustoloseShelley.Thequestionbeforeuswashowtocontinuetheprogramwithoutafull-timevolunteerdirector,andifwecould,inwhatform?
Imetwiththreepre-medstudentsinDecember2018,inasmallrestaurantinIslaVista,andaskedthemiftheycouldhelp.ByronRosenthal,JesseBasraandShanePathania,allRaggedyvolunteers,weremembersoftheMuDeltapre-medfraternityontheUCSBcampus.Iaskedfortheirhelp,andtheyrespondedwithanenthusiastic"Yes,wecandothis!"
TheysuggestedweformanAdventuresinCaringon-campusorganization.Togetherwecreatedfivecommitteesthroughwhichtheworkoncampuswouldbeorganized.
Next,IreachedouttoaformerRaggedyvolunteer,AnmoleAhdi,whoistakingagapyearbetweengraduatingandapplyingtomedicalschool,inordertocareforhismotherafterhisfatherdiedlastyear.IaskedhimifhecouldworkforAiCaspart-timeProgramCoordinator(allwecouldafford)andheagreed.Anmolenowcoordinateswiththefiveon-campuscommitteeleaders.

1) AsRaggedyvolunteersbefriendingthemostsociallyisolatedfrailelderlyinourcommunity.Throughpractice,theydevelopthecompassion,emotionalmaturity,andabilitytocommunicatewiththosewhoareseriouslyill,injuredanddying—atastandardthathelpstorestorewell-being.
2) Astrainingassistantscoachingnewtrainees.Theylearnhowtogiveinsightful,constructivefeedbackatastandardthatdevelopsthisskillsetinothers.
3) Ascommitteeleadersorganizingtheprogram.TheylearntheInstituteforHealthcareImprovement’sPlan-Do-Study-Actcycleofcontinualimprovement,andhowfacilitatelearningandplanningconversations.AtourmonthlymeetingstheyreporttotheAiCboardofdirectorsandrespondtoboardquestions.Indoingsotheybuildverypracticalprojectmanagementskills.
ThankstoByron’sleadershipandthemembersofthisteam,AiCisnowpositioned,bothoncampusandinthecommunity,toruntheprogramthiswaythroughoutthecomingschoolyear.Otherfraternitiesandsororitiesarealreadyexpressinginterest.Theexperiencewegaininthenextschoolyearwillalsopreparetheprogramtobereplicatedonothercampuses.ThisisonepivotalwaythattheRaggedyprogramcanbesustainedandgrowinthefuture.
AsakeysupporterofAdventuresinCaring,youplayavitalroleinthisprogram’scontinuance.

Despitelosingafull-time,highlyexperienceddirectorofvolunteersandreinventingthestructureofourprogram,wecontinuedtodeliverhighqualityservices.Ourstandoutteamof45UCSBstudentsbefriended800frail,sociallyisolatedelderlyresidentsinthefollowingninelocalskillednursing,memorycare,andassistedlivingunits—throughouttheyear. More than Volunteering: Learning through Service The first Continued Learning Committee meeting with student volunteers on campus. This Committee plays a key role in building the core skills of relationship-centered care.
Togiveyouanideaofthequalityofrelationshipsformedbyourstudentinterns,andthepowerofservice-learning,herearesomeofthestoriesourvolunteersreportedbacktousthisyear.Pleasenotethatstudents’journalsbelow,werenotoriginallyintendedforpublication,sotheyarenotpolishedstories.Instead,theirpurposeistodotheworkofreflectingonexperiencesinordertolearnthemostfromthem.Thestrugglesandfailures,theuncertaintywhensteppingoutofone’scomfortzone,arejustasimportanttodevelopingthecommunicationskills,emotionalmaturity,andcompassion,asthesuccesses,andperhapsmoreso.
Our Power to Uplift OneofthepeopleIvisitedtodaywastellingmestoriesofhislifeduringthewar,whichincludedhispassionforsingingandmusic.Hetoldme,“IthinkmymindissostrongbecauseofallthesongsIhadtomemorize.Butitmakesmefeeloutofplacehere,wheremostpeoplehavedementiaorAlzheimer’s.”Hebegantocry,soIreachedout,heldhishand,andcomfortedhim.Soonenough,hebecamemorecheerfulandrecalledafunnystoryabouthimsinging.
Thisremindedmeofthepowerwehumanshaveinhealingeachotherandliftingeachotherup.It’sapowerI’velearnedthroughthisprogramnottotakeforgranted.

IstumbleduponaresidentIhadn'tseenforawhile(shehadbeenmovedtoanewroom).Iwasexcitedtoseeherandwetalkedforovertwohours.Theconversationwashilarious,fulfilling,andthoroughlymeaningful.I

appreciatedhercompanyandshemine.WhenIsaidgoodbye,shegavemeahug.
ThenImaderoundsandsaidgoodbyetomyfriends,thoseIhadnotseenearlier.MylastmemoryofTheSamarkandwaswavinggoodbyetothenicest,funniest,andmostgentle-spiritedresidentIhavehadtheprivilegetoencounterthispastyear.WhenIwaswalkingawayIflashedhimapeacesign,andhe,grinning,flashedoneback.
ItwasanhonortobeaRaggedy.IwasabletobefriendmanyresidentsatTheSamarkand,andtheirstorieswillalwaysstaywithme.

Beyond My Comfort Zone Atfirst,Iwasn'treallysureifshewantedtotalktome.Itookachancethoughandsatdownnexttoher.Maryisverysoftspoken,anditwasachallengetofindtherightquestionsthatmightgiveherthechancetoopenup.
EverynowandthenI'dfindasmallcluetolatchontoandaskhermoreabout.Shetoldmehowshewasdouble-jointed,justlikeherfather,andwentontodescribeapictureofhimwhenhecametoAmericafromSweden—withhislegliftedallthewayuptohisshoulder!IaskedherifshehadeverbeentoSwedenandshetoldmesomeamazingstoriesabouthervisitsthere.
Mostofourconversation,however,wasdifficultforme.Shekeptsaying,“Idon’tdoanythingallday.Ihavenoenergy.Thedaysjustdragonandon.AllIdoissitandsleep,andwaitforthenextmeal.”
Itwasheartbreakingtoseethesadnessinhereyes.Ifounditsodifficulttofindanywordsthatcouldbringherpeace.Irecentlylearnedthatnoempatheticwordsofadvicebeginwith“atleast...”SoIsteeredawayfromthat.Ididn'ttrytogive
heradvice.Ididn'ttrytopretendIcouldevenimaginehowdifficultitwasforher.Instead,IdidallthatIfeltIcould:Ilistened.
Iaskedheraboutthingsthatmightbringhersomehappiness,andlookingbackonitIrealizedthisworked.Bytheendofthevisit,shehadsaidafewtimesthatshewassoverylucky:“I’velivedafulllife,withabeautifulfamily,andI’vehadsomanywonderfulexperiencestravelingtheworldIcouldn'tevenpickafavoriteplaceifyouaskedme!”
Thiswassuchachallengingconversation,butIcouldtellsheappreciatedhavingsomeonetotalkwith.Eventhoughitwasdifficult,thisvisitpushedmetogrowandlearnhowtobeasourceofcomfortinanemotionalconversation.

Goodbyes Ialmostforgottogovolunteertoday.LifehasbeensostressfullatelyandIdidn’tfeellikemakingtheeffort,butIhadtogobecauseitwasmylastdayvolunteeringhereandIcouldn'tbeartoleavewithoutsayinggoodbye.
ThereweresomanymomentswhenIhadtokeepmyselffromcrying.SomanyoftheresidentsweresadtoseemegobutalsosaidhowtheyaresoproudofmeandknowIwilldogreatthings.It’shardbeingthereforallthesepeopleforsuchalongtimeandnowhavingtosaygoodbye.Iloveandwillmissthemall!
Iwilllookbackonthispartofmylifewiththefondestofmemories.IthashonestlybeenoneofthegreatestthingsI’veeverdone.Thisprogram

hastaughtmesomuchandhelpedmetotrulygrowasaperson.

The Beauty of Humankind Keithalwayswaitsformeatthedoor.ButbeforeIcouldtalktohim,hisfriendcameover,veryeagertoshowmesomething.Itturnsout,therewasabigscandalgoingonatthehome.Alotoftheresidentsweremissingtheirbelongings.
So,Keith’sfriendhadtakentheinitiativetohideKeith’spreciousiPad,tokeepitsafefromwhoeverwasstealingthings,andhewantedtoshowmewhereitwas.
ThenwewentbacktoseeKeith,andhisfriendsaid,“Ireallylikethisguy.Iwoulddoanythingforhim.”Thishitme,deepintheheart,becausesometimesIgointothefacilityandIseeresidentswhojustsitthereanddothesamethingalldayeveryday.Ifeelbadforthem.Butthefactthatsomearestillabletomakefriendsandlookoutforeachothershowedmethebeautyofhumankind.
TheirdiscussioncontinuedonandKeith’sfriendwentintodetailabouthislife;howhegotinamotorcycleaccidentwhenhewas14andwasinacomafornearlytwoyearsofhislifebecauseofit.I’mastoundedbyhowcrazysomeoftheseresident’sliveshavebeen.Ittrulywasanhonortohavehimopenuptomeandtalkaboutsomethingsopersonal.
Astheconversationdeveloped,Keithjumpedinacoupleoftimesandsaidsomethingself-deprecating,buthisfriendsaid,“Stopbeingsonegative.You’reoneofGod’schildrenandyou’vebeenputonearthtohaveagoodlife,nottosuffer.”
Keithreallylistened.Icouldtellhowmuchhisneighborliftedhisspirits.Keith’sfriendtrulyinspiredmetobeaskindtoothersaspossiblethroughoutmylife,nomatterhowhardmylifemayget,becauseIhavetheabilitytohelpothersaroundme.
Ileftthefacilitythisdayfeelingthattremendousamountofwisdomandkindnesshadbeenputintomylife.Keith’sfriendisapersonIaspiretobecomelike.Itwasbeautifultowatchtheirinteraction.Icouldnothavelearnedsuchalessonwithoutbeingapartofthisprogram.

The Medicine of a Meaningful Relationship It’sgreatvisitingthepeopleatValleVerde.I'mgratefulIcouldgotothesameresidencethroughoutthewholeyear.I'vegottentodeveloprelationshipswiththesepeople.Itissorewardingwhentheyremembermeandwegetintodeeperconversations.OneconversationthatreallystoodouttomewaswithJeremy.
HehasbeenatValleVerdeforalongtime,butIhadn'tspenttoomuchtimeone-to-onewithhim.Today,heopeneduptomeandtoldme,“Ifeelreallyaloneinhere.”Alotofpeopletherehavesomesortofdementia.Ihavehadmanyconversationsthatstartovereveryfiveminutes.Jeremydoesn'thavethisproblemandhefeelsalonebecausehecan'tmakeameaningfulconnectionwiththeotherresidents.
Wehadagreattime.Hefeltlessaloneandmorelistenedto.Andthenheaskedmetojoinhimatbingo.Wehadfuntheretoo.

Sudden Loss TodaywasthehardestvisitI’veeverhad.Don’tgetmewrong,itstartedofffullofgamesandlaughs.IhelpedSueorganizeabingogameinFrench.Everymonth,thereisathemedweekandforthismonthitwasFrench.TherewereabouttenofusplayingandImetalotofnewresidents.Oneresident,Yula,wasallthewayfromtheUkraine.ShehadlivedalloverEurope,andtheninCanada,beforemovingtoCalifornia.Iaskedherfavoriteplacetoliveandshesaid,“California!”
Whilethegamecontinued,IheardtwooftheresidentstalkingabouthowDonhadpassedawaylastnight.MyheartdroppedassoonasIheardthosewords.IimmediatelyturnedtoSueandaskedherifitwastrue.Shesaid,“Yes,Donpassedawayyesterdayinhisroomafterlunch.”Icouldnotfathomwhatwashappening.IhadjustspokenwithDonandwewerelaughingandjokingathisfavoritelunchtablewherehealwayssits.Donwas89yearsold,butheseemedalotyoungerthanthat.Hecouldwalkaroundwithoutassistanceandhewasalwaysawareofhissurroundings,sotobetoldthathepassedawaywasashock.IamgoingtomissDon,andhisjokesandthelaughterhebroughtintomylife,dearly.Ihopeherestsinpeaceandhisfamilyfindsthestrengthtogetthroughthisdifficulttime.
Afterhearingthisnews,itwashardformetobeupbeatandplaygames,soIexcusedmyselfandmadeavisittoJulia.Sheneverfailstoputmebackinagoodmood.IwillalwaysholdDoninmyheart,andIknoweveryoneatHeritageHousewillmisshimdearly.

Building Friendships Mrs.R.usedtobeverysassytowardsme,butshehasslowlybecomeoneofthesweetestresidentsIsee.SheisalwaysinterestedinwhatI’mdoingatCasaDorindaandwhatIdowhileI’mthere.WetalkaboutmygoalofbecomingaPAandsheissosupportive.ShethinksbeingaRaggedyissuchgoodexperience.It’sinterestingtohavethiskindofconversationwitharesident.ItisoneofthosemomentsthatmakesyoureallyproudtobeaRaggedy.
ImadesuretoseeDr.H.lastandwehadagreatconversation.Hehasanamazingmemoryandwetalkedabouthischildhoodandfamily.Itmadehimsohappy.Hislong-forgottenmemoriesresurfacedaswespoke.Healsoexpressedinterestinmycareeraspirations,andmyjourneytogetthere,soIliketorunmyplansbyhim.Hissupportmeansalot.Hewasareallegendinthehealthcarefield,soheisanawesomeresourceandawealthofinformationandstories.
AsIspenttimegettingtoknowtheresidentsthisweekend,Ifeltthattheywerenowwantingtogettoknowme.Thismadeitadifferentexperience.Icantellthatthesearerealfriendshipswe’recreatingandthishasreallytransformedmyexperienceasaRaggedy.

2. Online Education Initiative “We’vebeenwrongaboutwhatourjobisinmedicine.Wethinkourjobistoensurehealthandsurvival.Butreallyitislargerthanthat.Itistoenablewell-being.Andwell-beingisaboutthereasonsonewishestobealive.Thosereasonsmatternotjustattheendoflife,orwhendebilitycomes,butallalongtheway.”

Overandaboveconductingourlocalvolunteerprogram,AiChasbuiltanentirelynewwaytomakeourtrainingprogramsaccessibletoprofessionalandvolunteercaregiversanytime,anywhere.
Productionofourfirstonlinecourse,OxygenforCaregivers,beganduringtheThomasFireinDecember2017,andwecompleteditinJune.Theselasteighteenmonthshavebeena
strenuoustestofourabilitytoturnadversityintoopportunity.KudosgotoBentMyggen(courseproduction)andNatalijaGlusac(businessdevelopment)whohaveworkedformostofthosemonthswithoutanypayatall,andtheremainingmonthsforalotlessthanminimumwage.Ithasbeenmyprivilegetojointheminputtingallofoursavingsatriskandmakingthissacrifice.Wehavealldonethiswhilealsobeingfull-timecaregiversofothermembersofourfamilies.
OxygenforCaregiversismadebycaregivers,forcaregivers.Itisadistillationofpractical
wisdomfromthededicatednurses,doctors,therapists,chaplains,firstrespondersandvolunteersoftheSantaBarbaracommunity.Itisaneight-hourself-pacedcourse,madeoftwenty-minutesessionsandfive-minutesteps,sothatitcanfitintoatightschedule.Itisaccessibletoanyonewithadesktop,laptop,padorsmartphone.
Thehighproductionvaluemakesitapleasuretowatchandtolistento.OxygenforCaregiverstrulylivesuptoitsname.Itisabreathoffreshairthatactuallyreducesyourstressasyoutakeit.
WeareusingtheUniversityofNorthCarolina’sPosttraumaticGrowthScaletomeasuretheimprovementsitproducesinwell-being.Thereare
