Phuket; formerly known as Tha-Laang or Talang is one of the southern provinces (changwat) of Thailand. Neighboring provinces are (from north clockwise) Phang Nga and Krabi, but as Phuket is an island there are no land boundaries. The island is served by Phuket International Airport, located in the north of the island. The ph of "Phuket" is an aspirated hard "p", not a soft "f", so the name is pronounced (roughly) "Poo-get". The name Phuket is apparently derived from the word Bukit in Malay which means mountain or hill, as this is what the island appears like from a distance.

Before that its old name was Ta-lang (in Thai): The word is derived from the old Malay "Telong" which means "Cape", which is still in used for one of the main districts in the Phuket area.

Phuket is the biggest island in Thailand, located in the Andaman Sea, in southern Thailand. The island is mostly mountainous with a mountain range in the west of the island from the north to the south. The mountains of Phuket form the southern end of the Phuket mountain range, which ranges for 440 km from the Kra Isthmus. 70 % of the island is covered with forest. Phuket has several sandy beaches.

One of the most popular tourist areas on Phuket is Patong Beach on the central western coast, perhaps owing to the easy access to its wide and long beach. Most of Phuket's nightlife and its cheap shopping are located in Patong, and the area has become increasingly developed. Patong means, "the forest filled with banana leaves" in Thai Other popular beaches are located south of Patong. In a counterclockwise direction these include Karon Beach, Kata Beach, Kata Beach Noi, and around the southern tip of the island, Nai Ham Beach These areas are generally much less developed than Patong, and sought out by individuals, families and other groups with a preference for more relaxed and less crowded environs than Patong.

Scuba Cat Diving has long led the Phuket dive community with active involvement in many environmental initiatives: sinking of Marla’s Mystery creating Phuket’s first artificial reef (Nov. 2000), this year celebrating the tenth anniversary being local coordinator for International Reef Clean-up day, Phuket’s only active REEF CHECK team, active membership in both GREEN FINS and GO ECO projects and ongoing assistance with the Phuket Marine Biological Centre in conducting fish and coral surveys.

A 12-Day expanded IDC

Although PADI requires an IDC to have a minimum duration of 7 days, we have found some extra presentations and workshops highly beneficial to our candidate success. To accommodate these extra presentations we have found a 10-day program more suitable. Mark Ellyatt a technical dive instructor based at Scuba Cat Diving Phuket, Thailand achieved the deepest ever-solo scuba dive recorded

on Thursday 18 December 2003. At 6.30pm local time, Mark surfaced from the 313m (1032ft) dive and broke another barrier by completing the dive without any decompression illness symptoms. The conditions on the surface were described as perfect at the dive

site almost 35 miles west of Phuket in the Andaman Sea.

The PADI Open Water Diver

This diving course is the most popular program in the world. This certification will open more than 70% of the world, the underwater world. You will get a lifetime certification recognized in more than 180 countries.

This program is designed to teach you how to dive safely, The program is 4 days where you have 5 confined water sessions in the swimming pool, 4 Open Water Dives, the two first one at a maximum depth of 12 meters and the last two at 18 meters maximum and some knowledge development in the classroom to learn the dive tables, how to plan your own dive. At the end of your course you will get a certification, this card is valid for the rest of your life. Now you are an independent diver. The course takes 4 days.

PADI Advanced Open Water Program

This program is for adventurous divers. You will discover the underwater world. This is the perfect program to expend your own knowledge, to find out about your interest in diving, to explore some of diving’s top adventures. PADI Divemaster Course

The PADI Divemaster program is your first step leadership level in the PADI System of diver education. This rating denotes you as a person who:

1. Has a high level of personal diving skill. 2. Has instructor level knowledge of diving theory. 3. Has had significant training in how to assist an

instructor during training activities. 4. Is able to assume appropriate responsibilities that

benefit the welfare of other divers.

As you may know, many PADI Divemasters go on to become PADI Instructors. So, the training and experience you gain through the PADI Divemaster program helps shape your abilities and attitude toward becoming a professional level diving educator.

As a PADI Divemaster, you'll be qualified to:

* Supervise training and non-training – related activities by planning, organizing and directing dives. * Assist a Teaching status PADI Instructor on any PADI course * Guide PADI Open Water Diver course students during the tour portion of the dives 2, 3, and 4 under the direct supervision of an Instructor * Teach the PADI Skin Diver course and the PADI Discover Snorkeling program * Conduct a PADI Discover Local Diving program * If qualified as a PADI Discover Scuba Diving leader, independently conduct PADI Discover Scuba Diving in a pool or in confined open water * Teach Emergency First Response courses after successfully completing an Emergency First Response Instructor course.

3. Practical Application this involves training activities using various structured training sessions, simulated scenarios and internship sessions with actual PADI programs. Upon successfully completing the PADI Divemaster program, you’ll receive a certification card and wall certificate denoting this rating. You’ll also become a member of PADI and receive benefits, including the ability to purchase professional liability insurance (which may be required to conduct some activities).

PADI Instructor Development Course

The Instructor Development Course (IDC) is a 10-day training program, which teaches you how to instructor recreational scuba diving. During the IDC you will use the latest teaching techniques, the complete system of PADI support materials, and will be continuously assessed on your teaching and presentation skills...

Scuba Cat has been a PADI Instructor Development Centre since 1997 and in 2007 a PDI 5 Star Career Development Centre, the highest rating for a dive centre. Classes for the instructor level programs are kept to sensible hours, to allow you to have a few hours of relaxation time each evening. Although PADI requires an IDC to have a minimum duration of 7 days, we have found some extra presentations and workshops highly beneficial to our candidate success. To accommodate these extra presentations we have found a 10-day program more suitable and the end of the IDC we have added 2 remedial days.

Extra workshops include:

Ascents and Descents, Buoyancy control, Buddy Breathing, Controlled Emergency Swimming Ascent, Rescue exercises, students control and scenarios.

Planning, organizing, and scheduling all the PADI Courses in different environments.

With a relaxed, low stress 10 day IDC you can focus and elaborate on specific topics, review certain parts of the program, give extra time or lectures to our candidates.

The main focus of our program is to give the best knowledge to our candidates before they start teaching.

At the end of your IDC and the 2 remedial days, you have to do the PADI Instructor Examination. The IE is on three days. We are evaluated on different presentations and exams.

PADI Emergency First Responder and Care For Children Instructor

This program will show you how to teach PADI new first aid courses Emergency First Response Primary Care (CPR), Emergency First Response Secondary Care and Care For Children. As a PADI Instructor you will be teaching several courses that will require your students to have first aid and CPR training. By qualifying as an EFR Instructor, you will be able to teach your students yourself. Why run the risk of losing your customers to another PADI instructor?

The Emergency First Response Care for Children course is an innovative CPR, first aid and AED training course that teaches people how to provide emergency care for injured or ill children (ages one to eight) and infants less than one year old. During this course, you'll learn how to teach your students about medical emergencies that children face and how they differ from adult conditions. The curriculum also includes the importance of attending to basic emergency situations with children, the emotional aspects of caring for children, secondary care for children, and preventing common injuries and illnesses in children.

PADI Emergency Oxygen Provider Instructor course

As dive professionals, you know how important oxygen is as a first aid measure for diving related accidents. Remember to deliver oxygen you must certify. This course can be easily integrated with the PADI EFR and the PADI Rescue course. With this course, your students are allowed to deliver oxygen in a case of emergency.

Rebreather course

The new 2 day PADI Rebreather Diver program is the entry level course for recreational divers wishing to utilize Nitrox Semi-Closed Circuit Rebreather systems. This Specialty course introduces the planning, organization, procedures, potential problems and hazards of semi-closed rebreather diving. It is specific to the features, accessories, maintenance and proper use of the Dolphin/Atlantis semi-closed rebreathers. A pool orientation and 3 Draeger Dolphin open water dives are included.

PADI Deep Diver Specialty Course

The Deep Diver Specialty course offers you the opportunity of a lifetime - going deep to see thing others can only dream about. While earning this scuba diving certification, you'll learn deep dive planning, organization, procedures, techniques and hazards. You'll also put this knowledge to the test as you go on four open water dives that range from 18 - 40 meters / 60 - 130 feet.

DSAT Gas Blender

More people are diving with enriched air and this means the demand for enriched air fills is also increasing. However, there needs to be someone qualified to administer these fills to meet this demand. This is where the DSAT Gas Blender course comes in.

Trimix Gas Blender

The DSAT Gas Blender course will train you as a qualified gas blender, allowing you to provide gas mixes to appropriately certified consumers. You'll learn the physical properties of oxygen, its associated hazards, handling requirements and what cleaning equipment is necessary. Finally, you will learn the five methods of obtaining the desired enriched air nitrox mix and the various methods used to obtain proper helium mixes.

Internship and Master Scuba Diver Trainer rating

Scuba Cat offers a unique work experience program. We give you the opportunities to team teach with our senior instructor for a period from 4 to 6 weeks.

Observing a senior instructor conduct courses is as valuable as the IDC itself. You will team teach diving courses from beginner to Divemaster levels. The Work experience program begins by first observing different senior instructors conduct their diving courses, and then begin to teach independently.

A Senior Instructor will follow on your courses assessing you as well as providing you with tips and hints that will make your courses more fun and effective both for your students and you the Instructor.

By the end of the work experience you will have certified at least 25 students and be a Master Scuba Diver Trainer

PADI IDC Staff Instructor

As a seasoned PADI Instructor, you have wisdom and experience to share with up-and-coming PADI leaders. And, you know that continuing your education never ends. As an Instructor Development Course (IDC) Staff Instructor, you help bring up the next generation of PADI Instructors while gaining in-depth instructor-trainer knowledge. Because IDC Staff Instructors are an integral part of the PADI IDC, you set the stage for moving on to PADI Course Director as you present topics in the IDC and help shape PADI Divemasters and Assistant Instructors into PADI Open Water Instructors.

In addition to all the courses you can teach as a PADI Instructor, you can also:

PADI DSAT Tec Deep Diver Course

The DSAT Tec Deep Diver course takes you past recreational diving and immerses you in the world of technical diving. After successful completion of the DSAT Tec Deep Diver course you'll be able to conduct gas-switch extended no-decompression dives, decompression dives and accelerated decompression dives using air and enriched air to a depth of 50 metres/165 feet. You'll also understand the hazards and risks involved in technical diving, as well as how to prepare for and handle reasonable foreseeable technical diving emergencies.

The practical side of DSAT Tec Deep teaches you how to dive with twin sets and the use of deco tanks and also how to gas switch safely from your back set while decompressing.

Deploying your SMB will become an art form at depths that will boggle your mind. This course also requires you to master.

PADI DSAT Trimix Course

The practical side demands pinpoint accuracy when it comes to buoyancy control with up to 4x DECO cylinders. There will be more decompression stops on the dives, which means more time underwater for problems to occur. This course demands mastery of ALL skills, with no exceptions! Self-study is the key to success. The theory teaches you the importance of Helium and how it affects our physiology. Hypoxia comes into play and travel gas is introduced and so logistics of calculating gas consumption and calculating CNS & OTU's becomes more taxing.
